Law student who is actually taking a legal ethics class right now: The reason Wexler & McGill is better as two separate practices is that, legally speaking, law firms are single units. In many cases dealing with breaches of ethical duties, the firm, not just the individual lawyer, is on the hook.
Mesa Verde in this case would mean Green Mesa. Mesa as in the geological formation, and its green because of all the vegetation. There is a National park named Mesa Verde for that reason.
Howard perceived Kim joining Schweikart & Cokely as a significant threat because it would have given a rival firm a talented and ambitious lawyer. On her own, however, he didn’t see her as a direct competitor to HHM and felt confident he could retain Mesa Verde. That's why his tone changed.
And yet even after finding out Kim's not going with S&C he desperately goes to Chuck looking for arguments about compliance law to keep Mesa Verde and even says it's "likely they're loosing them" I honestly think he was being genuine in saying he respects her going out on her own.
Please stop thinking about breaking bad. This is a unique show unto itself. Live in the moment. I guarantee you Better Call Saul will not stop shocking you. When you think you know something; maybe you don’t.
True but it deals with so many of the same characters and how they get to where they ended up in breaking bad so it's not all that separate it all leads up to where breaking bad ends from Saul's angle

Mesa literally means table. But when you're in New Mexico, it also means a type of geographic formation with a flat top that is very characteristic of the region.
Well, not exactly. In Latin and Spanish (in fact in many languages), mesa means table. In English (through Latin and Spanish) it means an elevated flat piece of land. Confusing it slightly more... Verde of course means green in many languages but is not a word in English at all. With all that nonsense said, I'm almost certain that Don Wachtell meant "green elevated piece of land" and not "green table" when he named his bank "Mesa Verde".
@@lightyagami1752But verdant almost always is used to refer to green in vegetation. Which is something that can describe many mesas, but when most people think of mesas they think of rocky lands so verdant is not usually the first word used to describe it.
@@lightyagami1752 Indeed, there are a half dozen words in English that are derived from virdis, and Verde itself finds use in English and could be argued that it is already a loanword. I don't think it's used in everyday communication, so I would argue it isn't, but could become one (depending on frequency of usage) over the next few years. However, as OP said, regionally it is used in everyday language.
I think Howard is just being sort of condescending in a way, like subtly implying she is young and naive, but he doesn't really have some extravagant plan or anything.
Photoshop might not have come to mind because this episode is based in 2002, and I'm not sure if the program had OCR (optical character recognition) at the time. Plus that could leave a digital footprint, whereas physically altering the documents leaves no trail and ensures the font matches perfectly, exactly.
In BB, when Walt takes out his life's savings to give to Jesse for the RV, the bank (credit union) is called Mesa Credit Union. The sign is green. So while not necessarily an overt reference, its likely an omage to BB.
That is true, but the fact he way it is shown makes it look that the reason he decided to go there in person instead of just letting Howard handle it was because of Jimmy. It's what I love about Chuck's character; at his best you can still feel his spite and biases, and at his worst you still understand all of the good reasons that led him to think how he does.
That is exactly the OPPOSITE of the writer's intention. These storylines featured in this ep are Specifically Constructed to make the audience wonder: "What is up with this truck driver? Why is Mike spying on Hector's business? What is he seeing that we're missing? What Is Jimmy doing with those files? Oh, changing the numbers? What does he hope to accomplish with that? What's Mike doing with that hose? Oh, just a "soaker" for the flowers, OK. ...No, wait, what's he REALLY doing with it?" They leave just enough crumbs so that by the time the credits roll most people at least kinda half-know that basics of what will come in the next ep, but it DEFINITELY demands paying close attention, using your brain & trying your best to figure out what's going on. If you're just sitting there & passively observing the events roll by without mentally engaging with them then the show is wasted on you.
I've watched quite a few different better call saul reactions and every reactor I've seen has called Howard stiff at one point haha. Another great reaction!!
My favourite part about the episode is still the part where Jimmy’s older client says what charge Jimmy defended him for. “Public masturbation. Total bullshit!” My favourite thing about that whole part is simply the callback to how Jimmy (as Saul Goodman) was introduced (in person instead of through his commercial) in Breaking Bad, when he defended Badger, and brought up a public masturbator as one of his clients 😂 Funnily enough, BOTH episodes were conveniently Episode 8 of the second seasons of both shows
Yeah, this episode is one long set-up. But it's also reaffirming who these characters are. Kim is gonna Kim, and Jimmy (unfortunately) is gonna Jimmy. Mike's gonna Mike, Chuck's gonna Chuck, and ... Howard's gonna Howard. He is maybe _simpler_ than you make him out to be, actually.
Can’t wait for you to released just how much Walter fucked up in the breaking bad series, puts into perspective the pride he has over any other character within the whole show
fun fact: between seasons, Jonathan Banks kept to a strict training regimen of staring out the window of a parked car for 19 hours every day

I only remember that in Greek "table" and "bank" (as in financial institution) are the same word (trapeza).

Mike is such a good pop pop 😁
Yeah, so nice of him to involve Kaylee in the construction of his Murder Hose!
It's a soaker hose for the Rhododendrons 😏
If you search up Mesa Verde National Park and the historical significance, this story is all the more poetic.
One thing must be kept in mind that Chuck has all the right to look for benefit of his firm; nothing to do him trying to tank jimmy or kim.
That’s actually a good point. I never really thought about it but ur right. As shitty as what he did was, he didn’t actually do anything wrong
