Sonic colors is great in almost everything and probably the best Wii sonic, but some people really didn't like the 2D level design, and honestly the bosses kinda suck
The thing about Unleashed is that it has 2 distinct kinds of stages- day stages and night stages. Day stages are traditional sonic go fast levels and people seem to pretty universally agree that they're pretty good. The night stages though, those are more slow platformer beat-em-ups, and people are HEAVILY divided on if they're fine or absolute garbage that ruins the whole game. Since you said you wanted a sonic beat-em-up though, maybe you'd have fun with them. Though tbh other than technically playing as sonic they're nothing like any other sonic thing ever
I feel like the Werehog stages are fine, they just really needed a drop shadow for platforming. Otherwise, I think the combo system was really cool, and one of the last few times Sega tried something new
Personally I'm on the fine side myself. I remember enjoying them when I first played Unleashed as a kid, but thinking back on them I feel like now I'd find them kinda clunky, but not awful or anything
I'm on the fine side myself. I typically relay the levels and try to complete them as fast as I can. I love the gear platforming near the end of the Rooftop run night level
I would go as far as to say the day stages are not great either. They are decently fun at least at first but not well designed and it becomes clear pretty quickly that they didn't have many ideas where to take the game and kept repeating ideas. It was never going to compare favorably but Mario Galaxy has more ideas in the first hour than Unleashed has in the entire game and it came out a year prior. At its' best it isn't a great game or even a good game.
I personally love both day and night stages, it's not every day you can physically throw hands with enemies in a Sonic game I wish they brought a bit of that mechanic back, but of course done right
I personally think that the best part about colors was the themes for the stages. Sweet mountain and starlight carnival just look amazing. One of my least favorite things about forces was just how boring the themes of the stages were. Green Hill again, yaaaay...
That use Green Hill on that gamebecause like Mania those games were to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sonic,it came out one year later but that was the point, they have to use Green Hill because it was the very first level on a Sonic game, Mania and Generation did the same and I don't see nobody complain about that.

As a huge fan of unleashed I understand how someone could hate it the werehog goes against what most people think sonic is it’s slow and isn’t as platform heavy also the medals can be annoying at times

"You can't even hurt me Mario! Let me just stand here on this bridge with an axe on the other side ready to be dropped to destroy the bridge so I can plunge into the molten lava below. You will never beat me Mario!"
I just gotta say Sonic really didn’t have that bad of a line up after secret of the rings. Sonic Unleashed is a great game that introduced the boost gameplay in the 3d games and you could run at break neck speeds while the game tests your skills and reflexes, and it saved the series after 06. Black knight on the wii was a major improvement from secret of the rings gameplay wise and has the best characteristic of Sonic. Sonic Generations perfected the boost gameplay. Mania brought back classic gameplay and showed how dedicated the fan base really is to the franchise. Even though this was a Sonic video it felt felt very negative. One last thing Sonic was jumping from wall to wall in Sonic Adventure, Sonic wall jumping is a staple at this point.
this was my most played and most loved sonic game of all time. I used to wake up every day and play it on my Wii so much so that my mother has "reaching for the Stars" engraved in her memory- and thats not a joke either. Damn what id give to play this game again... I need to buy this again.
Someone's definitely said this by now, but Sonic Colors was originally going to have a different Zone structure. 2 Acts, a boss, and 3 optional missions. This is how the DS version stayed, but they split one of the Acts in 2 in every Zone and made the missions required for the Wii version (which is what Ultimate is based from) because they thought the game would be too short for a home console release.
27:49 i havent played this game basically since it came out but back then my favorite was drill by a longshot. I always loved drilling around, especially since they not only made drilling in water a feature as well but even gave it a great alternate track to ground drilling
Nope! In the original game's code is leftover developer notes (in Japanese) for what each stage was suppose to be. • Tropical Resort: Act 1 was split into Acts 1 and 2, while the real Act 2 becoming Act 3. • Sweet Mountain: Act 1 was split into Acts 1 and 2, while the real Act 2 was split and became Acts 3 and 5. • Planet Wisp: Act 1 was split into Acts 1 and 4 while, Act 2 was changed to Act 6. • Aquarium Park: Act 1 was split into Acts 1 and 4, while Act 2 was changed to Act 6. • Asteroid Coaster: Act 1 was split into Acts 1 and 2, while the real Act 2 was changed to Act 6. Both Starlight Carnival and Terminal Velocity remain intact although the former's Act 2 was placed on Act 5 and there are hints of a scrapped Act 3 in each level with unused collision/geometry on each planet/zone, unfortunately enemies and objects aren't loaded in the unused sections. The extra acts in Colors are nothing more than filler levels like in Unleashed, Generations (both versions) and Colors DS.
@@justsomesimplenuclearbirbs4313 I really wish the stages weren't split up and the clear bonus stages were optional, I would've enjoyed the game so much more if I had 2 full levels per world and 4 unlockables that I could go back to for 100%
@@OscarSanchez-vo9dx Well that's what they did for the DS version of Colors. Two main acts then a boss with three side-missions each one either a "get this amount rings/wisps", "defeat this many badniks" or "reach the goal in this amount of time". A similar thing was done with the 3DS version of Generations where the missions are completely optional and only give unlockable content for the gallery instead of needing to clear three random missions to continue. The Chaos Emeralds were also given actual Special Stages instead of a reward for beating a boss with the Special Stages themselves ripped from Sonic Heroes with Generations' somewhat silky-smooth controls instead of the original's wonky and floaty controls. Sonic & the Secret Rings does start slow, but becomes a great experience the more you play it. I hated the game at first but then started to really enjoy it later on.
Sonic’s “gotta go fast” slogan is a very mild suggestion. Also Sega really shouldn’t have hired that sonic “fan” ingame who yells good and amazing right before you die, I think he’s one of Eggman’s employees.
Hey, choctopus. Have you ever played the advance trilogy? It's similar to classic sonic games. The zones have really cool themes and the music is great.
that one part in planet wisp where you spam "A" and it says good ect. took me way WAY too long to notice you needed to spam "A" to continue jumping i fell so many times and looked around the entire level just to figure that out
I think this game kinda depends on if you played the Wii version with it because I have a lot of nostalgic memories with this game (since this was one of my first sonic games) and also I guess it gives the replay ability with unlocking all the wisps and going into alternate routes. Also the music has gotta count for something because the music for this game is freaking awesome.
Sonic games are all about memorization even the classic ones Going fast is a reward for memorizing the layouts and getting to best routes So if it feels like you are being punished for going fast is just because you need to do more playthroughs (Tho is not like Sonic Colors is good enough to warrant another playthrough)
Correct, meanwhile casual players will have no trouble getting through the game because the ring system is designed to keep them afloat no matter how much they get hit. It's kind of an ingenious way to split the audience
Wait a second. "I loved Adventure 1 and 2, and then Heroes came out". And from there you go on to talk about Sonic 06. Are you just going to pretend that Shadow the Hedgehog never happened? I mean I can totally see why you would do that, but still... I dunno, there is something weirdly fascinating about playing as an edgy Sonic who has a gun. It's one of the weirdest acid trips I've ever experienced.
I would just like to say that Sonic Adventure is my absolute favorite Sonic game and that it’s in my top 10 all time games, despite the many, MANY glitches and clips through the floor
@NairMcgee GameCube version: you can clip through the ground as Tails by Emerald Coast as well as in Emerald Coast as Sonic during the whale thing. I clipped through the ground before it ever destroyed the bridge.
The saddest thing about the sonic color bosses is that with the first ferris wheel, if you use Lazer, it's an instant kill, and with the spaceships (blimps) if you use rocket when it goes 2d it's also an instant kill (or phase, been too long)
"Why are we trying to make Sonic something that he's not by making him slow down and platform" BECAUSE SONIC IS A PLATFORMING GAME!!! HE'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT SPEED!!! Speed is your reward for being good at the game, Not something you can just spam without a care in the world
Fun fact to answer one of the questions in the video Grinding on rails was actually introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, where Sonic got shoes inspired by real life shoes introduced at the time that were originally meant for grinding on rails, and were the new cool thing of the early 2000’s, hence why his shoes in that game are different from every other game in the series. They had decided this because of the whole cool thing, in which they were leaning into in order to appeal to current teens at the time of the games release
i've seen a video where someone was doing a Speedrun of this game, and one of his tricks involved glitching out of bounds, allowing him to go "around" the obstacles in the 2-D segments. this was extra effective in the underwater segments, BUT, made him much more likely to drown...
I suggest trying Unleashed. I'm pretty sure everyone loves the daytime levels, including me, it's just the nightime that's controversial. As long as you don't have a problem with hack n slash, you should enjoy it like I did.
17:27 uh no you've got that backwards. Mario wants to be Sonic so bad! Mario wishes he was as cool as Sonic! Mario wishes he could run fast, spin dash, homing attack, and decent stories and villains like Mephiles the Dark!!!
I like the Wisps. 4:02 And what I've always wondered about them is when they go inside Sonic's body through his tummy. What exactly are they doing in there?
in a way eggman making an amusment park as part of his world domminion plot is pretty realistic. considering how much money disney and universal make with their theme parks
Man. This guy ignored the tutorials more than egoraptor does in every video game ever. Theres so little boosting and other gameplay features being used
11:47 I mean... LEGO Dimensions also had both Sonic and The Simpsons characters... There's even a reference to a Sonic reference in The Simpsons with one of the interaction lines between Sonic and Bart in that game... And the official Sonic Twitter account once said everything is canon... You're right without knowing it.
I actually got into the swing of Secret Rings and found myself enjoying it more than I anticipated. It's slow at first, but white-knuckle once you're halfway though it.
Funnily enough, you say that the Sonic fandom has stockholm syndrome. But a lot of the fan-base has seemed to turn on Sonic Colors lately, mostly due to some of it's less positive qualities being magnified and brought to the forefront by the succeeding games.
My favorite wisp is the spikes one. Because if you use it CORRECTLY it's a super fast spin dash that goes along walls. Something that feels like sonic should have naturally
It’s weird people complain the levels are too short in this level yet you see this guy spend 10+ minutes in levels. Maybe it’s a good thing they broke up the levels into small segments.
If you ever revisit any old sonic game on the wii, I can definitely recommend Sonic and the black knight. While a storybook game, controls are pretty decent. Gameplay isn't exactly sonic-esque but, story wise it's really good. Idk. Perhaps it's nostalgia but the gameplay was fun. Sonic riders on the gamecube is p good too.
I LOVE Sonic and the Black Knight! But like you said, mostly for the Sonic characterization and story! IMO, it's how modern Sonic should always be! (Wish that WAS the case!) Really hoping Frontiers leans into that characterization for Sonic! *crossed fingers emoji*

I mean, nowadays people say Sonic Generations is the best
I love Generations and Colors the best 3D Sonic games since Adventure 2
Yes many agree with that.
No nowadays people say 06 and unleashed is the best
@Kian Colors literally outsold
@Kian lmao plz Generations is barely a game it gets most its hype from modding
sonic and the black knight has to be one of the most underrated sonic games
damn the nostalgia. I played this game years ago as a rental
Sonic games are all about memorization even the classic ones
Going fast is a reward for memorizing the layouts and getting to best routes
So if it feels like you are being punished for going fast is just because you need to do more playthroughs
(Tho is not like Sonic Colors is good enough to warrant another playthrough)
Correct, meanwhile casual players will have no trouble getting through the game because the ring system is designed to keep them afloat no matter how much they get hit. It's kind of an ingenious way to split the audience
Even tho people are starting to hate on this game, this game still is a good game despite it’s problems. This was my first sonic game
I'm so sorry
@@juanitobenito bruh
25:40 theres no way this dude predicted super mario wonder and the rail grinding feature
DID I?! LMAO
It's one of the weirdest acid trips I've ever experienced.
you drew that at 3 years old? damn i cant even GET Sonic's proportions right..
The saddest thing about the sonic color bosses is that with the first ferris wheel, if you use Lazer, it's an instant kill, and with the spaceships (blimps) if you use rocket when it goes 2d it's also an instant kill (or phase, been too long)
"Why are we trying to make Sonic something that he's not by making him slow down and platform"
BECAUSE SONIC IS A PLATFORMING GAME!!! HE'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT SPEED!!! Speed is your reward for being good at the game, Not something you can just spam without a care in the world
Fun fact to answer one of the questions in the video
Grinding on rails was actually introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, where Sonic got shoes inspired by real life shoes introduced at the time that were originally meant for grinding on rails, and were the new cool thing of the early 2000’s, hence why his shoes in that game are different from every other game in the series. They had decided this because of the whole cool thing, in which they were leaning into in order to appeal to current teens at the time of the games release
Still my favorite sonic game, excited to see how you feel about it now
i've seen a video where someone was doing a Speedrun of this game, and one of his tricks involved glitching out of bounds, allowing him to go "around" the obstacles in the 2-D segments.
this was extra effective in the underwater segments, BUT, made him much more likely to drown...
Finally, a game I can watch gameplay on without spoilers
“Make a sonic beat em up”
Sonic unleashed: am I a joke to you?
I suggest trying Unleashed. I'm pretty sure everyone loves the daytime levels, including me, it's just the nightime that's controversial. As long as you don't have a problem with hack n slash, you should enjoy it like I did.
Hell I sort of like the night stages, I felt badass as a kid hitting combos and time attack finishers, man that felt different
@@VelaBun Same here. And the slow paced platforming worked well with it.
@@gavinfox7216 it’s fun but I just hated taking 30 minutes on each stage😭
17:27 uh no you've got that backwards. Mario wants to be Sonic so bad! Mario wishes he was as cool as Sonic! Mario wishes he could run fast, spin dash, homing attack, and decent stories and villains like Mephiles the Dark!!!
if the drowning theme gave you nightmares, then does the sound of him breathing a bubble give you peace?
A Sonic beat em up. This aged like fine wine.
You know you can boost into enemy’s to kill them
And I think all the cutscenes are pulled from the original one
I like the Wisps. 4:02 And what I've always wondered about them is when they go inside Sonic's body through his tummy. What exactly are they doing in there?
My favorite Wisp is the Frenzy Wisp becuase it looks cool and it's fun to use and looks cool when you use it.
in a way eggman making an amusment park as part of his world domminion plot is pretty realistic. considering how much money disney and universal make with their theme parks
Man. This guy ignored the tutorials more than egoraptor does in every video game ever. Theres so little boosting and other gameplay features being used
Dr Eggman says: "death to epileptics"
when you said ''Im gonna getcha'' it reminded me of sonic.exe💀💀
"Took a page out of Mario for this one"
Yeah thats nothing new lol
11:47
I mean... LEGO Dimensions also had both Sonic and The Simpsons characters... There's even a reference to a Sonic reference in The Simpsons with one of the interaction lines between Sonic and Bart in that game... And the official Sonic Twitter account once said everything is canon... You're right without knowing it.
Are we not going to talk about how this man beat the entire game in 40 minutes?
nah, there's cuts and edits inbetween. it's probably longer than 40 but less than 2 hours.
6:27 idk why this got me lol
Holy shit i completely forgot this channel for so long! RUclips algorithm finally did its job!
I didn’t realise choc has played sonic for so long
"A Sonic Beat 'Em Up sounds fun."
The werehog, Sonic Boom: Am I a Joke to you?
Werehog to Boom: "Well, yes actually."
Fans: "This is the GOOD Sonic game!"
Everyone else: ... He controls like a sack of wet sand.
It is one of the good ones, this is just a bugged remake and it’s already ruining the original game’s reputation
It’s weird people complain the levels are too short in this level yet you see this guy spend 10+ minutes in levels. Maybe it’s a good thing they broke up the levels into small segments.
They really did just steal the ending from Mario Galaxy
Literally no, mario galaxy ends with the universe being recreated, sonic colors ends with wisps saving sonic from a black hole.
Getting all Red Rings let’s you do Sonic Simulator and unlock Super Sonic in this game.
I'm surprised you didn't run into the glitches (unless they got removed)
"Make a Sonic beat-em-up"
Sonic Frontiers with combat system:
"All you had to do was ask"
