    I don't really understand how people aren't getting how this is a review.
    Yes, it's a parody, but that's there for a reason. It blatantly mocks the logic used in the film while he'll at key moments drop some opinion on how well certain parts or aspects hold up.
    If anything, I feel like I am getting an informed opinion about this shit, even though it's deeply layered in comedy.
    Frankly, this shit is more entertaining anyways. If I wanted straight forward reviews of this kind of shit, I would never go to Nostalgia Critic. I go to people like Chris Stuckmann.
    Nostalgia Critic has and probably always will be about parodying the content while also offering opinions.
    The only difference between old NC and new NC is that his parody has visual form instead of him sitting at a desk playing with a prop or two.
    If I had to offer my honest opinion, I think he benefits a lot more from the socialization in the videos whereas in the older ones he was basically talking to himself.
    I'm sorry, I had to get that out of my system.
    I'm tired of seeing this onslaught of angry hipsters bitching perpetually about how Nostalgia Critic "sucks" now.

      +Crucillus Thorn I don't think that's the argument. I just don't believe that he should do reviews like this, he needs to mix in a little more nostalgia critic type of quality to it which this did a little more than his previous skit reviews in my opinion

    • @Herhinney
      @Herhinney 8 лет назад +12

      +Crucillus Thorn He's never going to do the same thing too, I think people are so afraid of change that they don't want to see his work evolve. He's always done cut aways anyway, but their content gets deleted off RUclips so they might be cutting it out completely for copyright purposes?

      +GodzillaFanForever 1 yeah but this time was a sequel to his actual review in Disneycember. He did all the review part there and rather than just say "I suppose I get it" at the end of the last top 11 video he made this which is basically all the skits if the Disneycember review were a proper one.

      I've said this before, but while I don't hate the new stuff NC is doing and while he's already stated his opinions about this film, but more skit and less review takes away from being a review, not to mention making the review more biased when you don't have clips from the movie to show either strong points or weak points, as you are only left to take someones word for it.
      This is on the same bases as to when he did the reviews for Jurrasic World and Pixel, you can't really see how bad or good something is from someone's word alone.
      It takes away from the review even more when someone who hasn't watched the movie watches the review, I have NEVER seen Hoccus Poccus in my entire life and I have to be honest when I say that I'm missing the point, not that I can't see what he's talking about, I just can't tell where either the critism and jokes begin or end.
      I love that they're doing bigger stuff now, but if they're going to do stuff like this, I would rather have something like the Alice in Wonderland reviee or The Last Airbender episode lists, where we get examples and clips of what he's talking about while keeping the review from a static scene or area.

      +Chosen One 41 hocus pocus was a mediocre movie when it was first released and it's still mediocre despite "90's kids" propping it up as something more than it is due to the lens of nostalgia. doug's reviews are short-length movies onto their own that mix social commentary with critiques of movie tropes and references to other movie. youtube's current copyright environment doesn't allow doug to easily use actual footage from movies to make money from channel views, etc and he has had to change his format to reflect that. sorry if your brain can't keep up

    • @_blank_6288
      @_blank_6288 8 лет назад +1

      +MuscleDad420
      I don't know, I don't really see anyone "propping it up as something more than it is". I accept it for what it is, and imo it's cool if other people dislike it and want to make fun of it, but I still like it. But that's my general stance about stuff in general, not just things I find nostalgic. It's okay if people don't like the things I like. I wish more people liked the things I find enjoyable too, simply so I could share that interest with them but if they don't that's okay too.
      This film in particular is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine... Is my pleasure from it derived from nostalgia? Yeah. But I just don't see why nostalgia matters really. We all have preferences that are colored by nostalgia, so picking apart WHY we as people like something (whether it's out of nostalgia, or out of general interest or entertainment derived from the produce, etc.) feels silly to me because it results in the same outcome: Enjoyment.
      I understand looking back on things we find nostalgic and critiquing/parodying/referencing it (I mean of course lol), but being horrifically critical towards people who DO like those things seems uncalled for. I can understand being frustrated at people who tote the film as a overlooked classic or something lol, but honestly I'm not seeing anyone doing that here. I'm just seeing people complain about the skit-based nature of this vid (even though he's talked about this film multiple times before in the past lol).

    I love you, NC. So when I say what I'm about to say, please don't see it as a trolling, but rather a critique of my own. OK, that said...
    I wouldn't mind if this was continually funny. I wouldn't mind if the gag here didn't run dry 4 minutes into the video. I wouldn't mind NC evolving his way of telling comedic art, if it meant that he was getting funnier doing it, or that his critiques would become more thought-provoking, and indeed more nostalgic.
    But this video is none of those things. Neither was his Jurassic World one, nor his Mad Max one. He's clearly having more fun making these things, but that doesn't make the end result a more fun video.
    It's like he didn't have the heart to fire his actors after Demo Reel ended and Nostalgia Critic's been paying for it ever since. A shame, really.
    Right, that's all the harsh-ness that I'm going to go into. Sorry to be so blunt, but this has gone on far too long, and speaking as a fan since that original Transformers review around 2006-7, I don't think anything is going to change unless enough people come out and be brutally honest about the content being put out here. Please understand, I crit because I care.
    I really hope enough fans bring it to the attention of the big guy, and that some kind of change (for the better this time) happens in the future.

    While I love the Nostalgia Critic, I can't really get into this seeing as it's 100% parody rather than review, and the style not only doesn't suit the Critic, but I and a lot of other people completely fail to understand it as I haven't even seen Hocus Pocus.
    I would've liked it far more if he did it in the style of the Shining Mini-Series review. He mixed the parody stuff in with the classic review material, and there were plenty of jokes even for people who never saw that particular movie.
    [insert overblown comment such as "THIS IS WHEN THE NOSTALGIA CRITIC DIIIIIEEEEDDDDDD" here]
    Yeah, I'm not going anywhere near that far. The Critic's made plenty of mistakes like this in the past, and he's admitted and learnt from them. This will most likely be no different.

    • @TheListenerCanon
      @TheListenerCanon 8 лет назад +2

      +DarthVaderReviews I hope so. Doug is a very great guy. He just needs to not listen to views and look at the comments like people did with the wall in his King and I review. I showed Rob the comments on this and I also told him they should you use RUclips for stuff like blogs, real thoughts, sibling rivalry, etc. People are going to take him as a joke if he does it. He's going to be popular, but being popular doesn't always mean it's good. Look at PewDiePie or Shane Dawson.

      @TheListenerCanon 8 лет назад +14

      kyza delageeze I respect your opinion, but we don't hate it because it's different. We hate it because it's not very funny and barely any review in it.
      I think the direction Doug is taking to these clipless episodes is too far. He's doing too many of them in a short period of time. The last thing I want is the show to reach that point.
      Also, if he wants to avoid copyright, I think he should not post them on YT and just stick to any other video site.

      Well, I don't think Nostalgia Critic is going to die anytime soon, but these skits are what killed the very unfunny Demo Reel show he made. I personally don't care for 9 out 10 of his sketches with these actors. Doug himself can be really funny, but those two are usually pretty grinding. I'm not sure if it's the material, bad acting, or if Doug just can't direct people.

    • @kasrkinmullet

      kyza delageeze "Whats with people now a days and just wanting to hate for no reason"
      I'm not hating this for no reason, I just think that this is a comparatively poor Nostalgia Critic episode and it's due to the different style Doug is trying. I'm making it known that IMO it doesn't suit him nor does it work well with the Nostalgia Critic style.
      To make it clear what I mean, one trademark joke formula of the Critic is for him to criticize something in the movie, and then following that up with a satirical exaggeration of the movie. When you make the entire review said satirical exaggeration, people who haven't watched the movie end up completely lost.
      "Is called copyright issues"
      While I appreciate the Critic's had to disrupt the style due to copyright issues, this isn't due to copyright issues. Personally I'm fine with what he's had to do recently (Though if you ask me it won't help at all).
      "My point is people are hating for no damn reason
      If you dont like it
      Power to you but dont try to sympathize with fans by saying your "worried of the direction the show is going" you sound like a hypocrite and a hater"
      Actually, I'm just trying to be part of the group informing Doug in our opinion this style doesn't work. By making our opinion heard in this manner he can learn from his mistakes and getting better.
      That's about as far from "Hating for no reason" as it gets.

    I love Hocus Pocus, it does have a deep nostalgia value but I also actually really like the story; I like the dynamics between the two brothers toward their younger sisters, and how they acted to protect them. I also think that the show communicates something about sacrifice and adulthood, given that both brothers were willing to give their lives for a family member.

    Pokemon was never unpopular. It's been one of the best selling Nintendo franchises for the past 17 years. I don't know why people keep saying it somehow became unpopular.

    • @Giga419
      @Giga419 8 лет назад +16

      +Hector Madrigal I agree. But there was a stagnating period from 2004-2008 where they had to wait for the Pokemon generation and Gen Y in general to realise pretending to be mature and only like "more violent" games was pointless and no one cared. Pokemon started to increase and explode in popularity again because (a) The original fanbase started to come back and realised the quality and content of the games was now a rarity in the "game-drain" mess of 2008-20xx releases, (b) The consistency and depth of the Pokemon battling system (IV's, EV's, Stats, and the beautifully, almost natural evolution of Pokemon onto the online, wi-fi battling sphere) gave older audiences something to be entertained and engaged with. Making Pokemon complex and nuanced in the 90s with its battle system, and continuing to evolve that into the 2000s was a fantastic investment by Nintendo. Consistency is their greatest strength and greatest weakness. Consumers will always leave Nintendo in droves for the newest hi-def, flashy and violent release, but Nintendo's great secret is that they will always be there, consistently brilliant - biding their time until people get sick and tired of shitty ports, bad releases, broken games and micro-transactions.

      Nowadays Pokemon is most popular with the games. Anime series? Eh decent. But they're no indigo league or the Hoenn Region arc.

    • @Giga419
      @Giga419 8 лет назад +1

      Ultrai Breaker I'll agree that the newer seasons aren't as good as the 4Kids Dubs and there are hundreds, literally hundreds of reasons why that's the case - principally and it is often forgotten; Eric Stuart and some of the other voice actors were actually producers or had significant say in the relative direction and quality of the show. The fall of 4Kids/The rise of Pokemon International will always be a sad memory for the anime in the West because of the downright insulting way it was handled and the absolutely disrespectful treatment Pokemon International had towards the original voice actors and everything they had accomplished and made. Go to any convention with some of the original voice actors like Veronica Taylor and Eric Stuart and you can just tell that they're genuine talented and passionate people and only the brutal and harsh nature of corporate functions could have ended their tenor with Pokemon.
      That being said, Sinnoh for me is a surprisingly deep Arc. It's very character driven, and even thought Ash sounds like shit and a lot of the comedy has been stupidly lost - it's a very engaging series for me because of the Ash-Paul rivalry which evolved the seriousness and maturity of the series and showed successfully that they can engage with deeper concepts than "Yeah 2 friends can also be 2 rivals YEAH!". This was particularly evident through Chimchar, which had a link to Ash and Paul.... the Elite 4 in Sinnoh is arguably the best with it's deep battles (i.e. using stealth rock, abilities, trick room and even toxic spikes) and the final, emotionally driven showdown between Ash and Paul. Yes, we all know the Darkrai finish is lame and Ash actually had a shot at winning the Sinnoh League, but still.
      The plot with Team Galactic was also really interesting, they were a serious and dangerous force, blowing up islands, and even threatening to kill. Heck, in the finale showdown with Team Galactic, people actually DO die, in a Pokemon anime - I find it very bold. That being said, the voice actor quality in the arcs after Hoenn is blatantly worse. Sarah Natochenny the new voice actor of Ash for example isn't even a fan of Pokemon and only really knows Pikachu. It's little things that add up. Removing the comedy of Team Rocket was another mistake, and the new computer driven art style removed much of the charm for many, replacing it with a "plastic glow" kinda look that I can sympathise with not liking.

    Sometimes a movie doesn't have to have brilliant writing to become memorable or a favourite. I absolutely love the three witches, Winnie, Mary and Sarah, as they essentially carry the whole film and you have to re-watch each scene since each witch is doing something funny in the background (especially Mary during the 'I Put A Spell On You' scene) that makes it so endearing to people watching it, both new and old.

  • @pokedude720
    @pokedude720 8 лет назад +175

    It think I've figured out why people seem to hate on this video specifically: the film is too old, and it's not a review,
    To be more specific, in the other clipless reviews, the movie talked about was either still in theaters or had just recently come out on DVD etc., so people were more likely to have seen it. Here, the movie was made in the 90's, meaning that not as many people have seen it. This could have been fine if not for the other point: not being a review.
    Once again, in the other clipless reviews, Doug described the plot that was going on so that the skits would make more sense, with the commentary either sprinkled in or at the very end. Here, it's just a bunch of disjointed skits that don't make much sense if you haven't seen the movie (tying it back to point 1). In fact, the only joke that I got was the bus driver, and that was only because of a WatchMojo list.
    Tl;Dr version: if Doug either gave a plot synopsis during the review, like the other clipless reviews, or just did as a normal NC video, then people might not be so upset with this video.

    *sigh* ... and here I thought we were actually going to see a REVIEW. But I suppose I should count my blessings, because we likely would have ended up with another total smear job, completely omitting any positives at every opportunity, much like the so-called review of Event Horizon.
    Just goes to show how long it has been, and how low things have gotten since Disneycember and Dreamworksuary.

    • @smithbaran2908
      @smithbaran2908 8 лет назад

      +K1productions If he could have given a "REVIEW", he would have - and again, he did in fact do a very good review for Event Horizon. I watched the film myself and agreed with many, if not all of his critiques about it.
      In the case of this one, it likely has more to do with the copyright hammer coming down harder on stuff like this now that Blip is gone.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 8 лет назад +4

      Smith Baran
      The problem I had with his Event Horizon review is, he spent more time with skits than he probably should have, and he failed to take any time to outline any of the merits the film had. That would put Event Horizon in the same camp as Garbage Pail Kids, and you know damned well it deserves better than that.
      ... at at least the GPK review was a complete review, and not skit-heavy.

    • @smithbaran2908
      @smithbaran2908 8 лет назад

      K1productions ... I really didn't like Garbage Pale Kids either, though. And at the end he did in fact outline it's merits - he went out of the way to say the film took some risks to make some creepy imagery, and he even went as far as to say "maybe it's just me" and illustrate that it may be that he himself just is not a fan of the movie itself and found himself more curious about what the concept *could* have been.
      And again, I could excuse this skit-heavy bits purely because it's 'Nostalgaween' and one could say a holiday-themed review like this might be more deserving of the stuff.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 8 лет назад +2

      Smith Baran
      No, the only merits he outlined were "the stuff that was removed looked like it could have been cool" leaving the actual film with absolutely nothing. He has turned into X-play, focused more on lame comedy (which has gotten incredibly stale) rather than honest critique.

    • @smithbaran2908
      @smithbaran2908 8 лет назад

      K1productions But that in turn proves that he felt the *concept* had merit - just that it was pretty badly executed. And no, I again disagree - at least personally - since I didn't really find much to redeem the film since it was trying to be a horror film.

    Dear people complaining about the fact that the review is more of a parody than a straight forward review.
    RUclips's adpocalypse is still a major problem. If the critic did a straight forward review like usual featuring copyrighted clips the video would receive a strike in no time. By parodying the film while still talking about the films flaws however they avoid the risk of a strike. Be patient and enjoy what's given to you, keep in mind they have problems to deal with as well.

      I know I'm a year late responding to this, but that doesn't make it right! If it was truly a review, Doug would have used clips of the movie to further explain the flaws in it! Thing is, RUclips's copyright system is broken as all hell!

      as if that's why he did it. The truth is Doug can't get over Demo Reel being a failure. Nostalgia Critic is what got him a fanbase, but all he wants to actually do is actually make movies. The problem? He sucks at it. Even back when Channel Awesome actually had dozens of different content providers and he had a much larger budget he was pushing highschool level productions at best. Shit that wouldn't get awards at ANY film festival. Nothing wrong with that then because those were celebrations and we watched to see everyone having fun, but then you learn how he was unironically as cruel of a director as Tommy Wiseau. Even did the same shit where he didn't provide any water.

    Oh my God, Doug's resting face for Bette Midler's character is amazing. I couldn't stop laughing--dead on. Anyone else starting to notice how many recent NC episodes have been less of a review, and more of a recreation production? I understand when he's doing it for movie's that are still in theaters, but he easily could have used footage from Hocus Pocus. Are we seeing a sort of merge between the old Film Reel and the NC? Hmm...
    Also, hooray for commercials next week!!!!!

    • @cybertronguy98
      @cybertronguy98 8 лет назад

      +frozenaorta well no, this was just a skit. Mad Max, while a skit and had no movie clips was still a review. Pixels while havin no clips, was still a review, same for Jurassic World. this was JUST the skit, no review. im not saying Mad Max and the other clipless reviews are bad, im just saying the "reviews" that are just one long skit should stop.

    • @frozenaorta
      @frozenaorta 8 лет назад

      +Brandon Thompson What made the other episodes like this (Mad Max, Jurassic World, etc) count as "reviews" in your opinion, but this one not? Just curious. Am I following your meaning?

    • @cybertronguy98
      @cybertronguy98 8 лет назад

      frozenaorta because Mad Max, Pixels and the others had actual discussions about the movie throughout the video, while this was just one big chase. now you can say this and Fury Road are just the same thing. i say no because Fury Road talked about the series why people liked and disliked it and why the movie got so big.

    • @deadlyarc1805

      +frozenaorta those movies he could not use footage for as they were still in theaters this should have had clips

    • @henry1690
      @henry1690 8 лет назад +1

      +frozenaorta It could be that he was pretending to review the film while substituting footage from the movies with skits to avoid copyright. It was still a review with his commentary, but with skits to recreate the unused clips. Here, he's giving very little commentary and instead making a short film solely based on his character experiencing skit upon skit. There's no real review; rather, we receive highlights of the Halloween special of Demo Reel with no insight (or even an effort in pretending to have some) on the film in question, save the last few minutes.

  • @JakRizen2
    @JakRizen2 8 лет назад +77

    So at what point is this a review instead of an intentionally bad parody? Reviewing a film once briefly doesn't excuse you from reviewing it later when you dedicate a whole video to it, not when you are considered a movie reviewer. You want to make parodies like this, by all means go ahead, but set them up as a side project and actually review something for once. These skits take up so much time that you never actually get to reviewing anything. I get that you've had problems with copyright claims in the past but we will watch a review without a skit or footage from the movie. This is just annoying and pretentious.

    • @DigiRangerScott
      @DigiRangerScott 8 лет назад +1

      It was a review. All of it. But it was NC learning the flaws and why people choose to look past them in being a guilty pleasure

    • @JakRizen2
      @JakRizen2 8 лет назад +14

      Scott Sandler No, it's not. Just because he does one of his typical, looking past the flaws speeches, which are all the same by the way, doesn't make this a review. It's a guy parodying a film and taking a brief break to see the reason why people like said film.

    • @ALitleBitSpecial
      @ALitleBitSpecial 8 лет назад +6

      +JakRizen2 Agreed 100%, this parody format is very hit or miss and this was a huge miss (and the hits have been extremely rare). I tried watching it twice but fell asleep both times. The format worked great on the Matrix videos because it was a review intercut with the parody. The worst part is how this crap takes so much time he doesn't do other things like the reviews with his brother that i kinda like.

    • @Dradogs2
      @Dradogs2 8 лет назад +2

      +JakRizen2 I am just so amazed by the hypocrisy of the fanbase now I mean this style of review was tried in demo reel and it failed as badly as melvin brother of the joker. Yet somehow he now does this in every review he does and somehow people love it im not sure whether its because of coincidence or grand stupidity you might know the answer.

    • @JakRizen2
      @JakRizen2 8 лет назад +3

      Dradogs2 I honestly don't have an answer for that. I've never liked this format and it's only gotten worse since it's started. You'd probably have to ask someone who liked it from the start and changed their minds, or vice Versa.

    Love this movie and love the review. I love the movie despite its flaws. But let's be honest, even a movie like Monster Squad has flaws (like cliches) but the 80s generation loves it anyway, so this is our 90s equivalent.
