It appears that the rubber in the channel is supposed to be holding it up and isolating the covers from the vibration of the engine, not the fiberglass lip. Maybe replacing the rubber will solve the problem.
You beat me to it 🙂
Yes, there should be a heavy, thick and sturdy compound in the deck grooves, made of a water repellent foam. Not that flimsy black stuff!
And it’ll spread the load
Yep, not supposed to be on the lip. A good high density foam rubber should do the trick. It looks like someone used a low density rubber to replace and it isn't substantial enough to support the weight.
Nah! The where the rubber is is supposed to be a groove water to drain . The PO probably filled it with tons to cut the noise from the engines , something missing to support hatches.
The rubber gasket that the hatches rest on definitely needs replacing Simon.
Put a lanyard on your anchor handle fella, worried me hanging it over the handrail
The air cleaner you replaced is designed as a spark arrestor and required on All vessels to prevent onboard fires.
1. I run silicone hoses in an electrolisis cell that uses salt and other stuff, and they have absolutely no problem with salt.
2. Buy some modern alternators, you can find 100 amps alternators for 100 euro from some crappy vw golfs.
3. The engine doors should not touch that lip. The rubber seal is the support.
4. Good luck!
I think those are flame arresters. They should have a steel dust filter on the inside.
It is used for marine engines in an enclosed space to stop a flame from coming up the intake and igniting engine room gasses. It is a big deal on gas powered boats, and is required by law in Canada and the USA.
The thing to do with them is to wash them with carb cleaner each year.
Usually you do not have air filters on marine engines. There is virtually no dust particles to filter out in a marine environment.
Hi,as a retired marine engineer of over 40 years experience, every marine engine that I have worked on has had air filters, and sometimes double.
That first shot with the drone was just great, next time do it in dark and will show off your blue lights even better.
Don't think that epoxy will last without putting in more foam stuff around the edges.
Interesting video 👍 2 points the alternator you installed is not a marine alternator as marine units have spark arrestor screens on all ventilation openings which helps prevent volatile vapours in the bilge from being ignited. Second is you need to oil your foam air filters as the oil dispersed throughout the foam is what traps the dirt and with no oil on the foam it is useless in filtering the intake air. Not just a keyboard mechanic here but a retired certified marine mechanic .
so he could run air filters on that engine and not have a richer mixture do to a restriction of the filter element?
I worked for a Caterpillar dealer here in Canada for many years. Cat did not use any oil bath style air filters except maybe a few very early engines and what were called oil bath air filters. Mainly two element (inner/outer) paper or large panel style like on the big 6.25" bore engines.
is the gm engines got their fuel set up to run a restricted filter as any filter will add a restriction to the system.
@@CanandianPeriod
Oiled foam filters are very good with low air restriction. But you must use the correct oil and entirely cover the filter element with just enough oil. To much oil clogs the filter.
ahh yeah ok i got ya.
@@davidelliott5843
Simone, Those foam intakes are a bad idea, diesels suck a lot harder than petrol engines and you risk will sucking the foam filter into the engines.
You could put foam over the outside original holes BUT
Marine diesel don’t usually use a lot of filtering as there is not a lot of dust out at sea . It also cuts down the power too.
Check out the huge filters on large truck diesels they are designed not to suck in.
Never hear of silicone hoses having a problem on marine diesels on the salt water side , obviously on the ‘antifreeze’ side no issues there.
Cheers Warren
Great vlog guys. Just to add my two pennys worth. The cans I suspect are flame protectors as others have suggested. There should be no pebbles / sand getting into the engine hold especially if the lid seals are replaced. If paper filters were fitted it wouldn’t take long for damp air to block them and be sucked into the engine. Nice boat though, roll on summer. Stay well.
Fishing! The most expensive way to get a free dinner.
Hi Guys, It looks to me like the the rubber gasket is simply compressed over the years and is no longer providing a proper seal nor is it supporting the engine covers. The compartment needs new full size deep soft seals to support the covers.
ARrrr lass. You be swabbin the deck as it's a pirate life for thee. You be doin me a fine job or I'll keelhaul the lot of ya. lol
This made me chuckle! Very unappreciated comment.
Thanks@@andrewjones-productions
Another anchor suggestion; attach (bolt) the chain to the fluke end of the anchor. You may need to drill it - I couldn't see if there's a hole there already. Then attach the chain to the other end, where it is presently bolted, with cable ties or something similar. The anchor will then function normally but, if it becomes stuck, the cable ties will fail and the anchor can be pulled out backwards. You could also investigate the use of an Alderney ring to reduce stresses on the line.
Definitely replace those simple can air filters. All it would take is a tiny pebble to get sucked in and it could damaged the turbocharger fins and that would be a very expensive repair. Now I would definitely replace all the engine hoses with blue silicon hose. Have used silicon hoses on many diesel marine engines. They do last and don't get hard like normal rubber hose.
Those are V8 71 their supercharge not turbos
@@danacoyle1826 I was thinking of the Caterpillar 3306 engines on the other boat. I worked for a Cat dealer for many years. I see 3208's in this boat :-)
as a mechanic like yourself, we used to change all rubber hoses at Midland Red Bus Company with silicone hoses as their lifespan is infinite and resistant to all substances like oil diesel and seawater as I asked the manufacturer as I wanted to change my boat hoses and I did and they are still like new after ten years so I would just do it I would silicone is much better than rubber hoses yes its more expensive but as you know you pay for what you get and we know its the best stuff out there for this job. all the best from john from rugby UK
A SUGGESTION: Attach a small cable to the end of the brake handle that is used for the anchor so it can be hooked temporary to something solid on the boat. (THINGS CAN FALL INTO THE WATER)
Was going to suggest some sort of tether for the same reason. Very easy to lose grip and drop it overboard.
Also, hope the engine was running whilst you are using that winch.
The anchor handle might want a float on it.
top suggestion, exactly what i was thinking seeing Si, holding that handle while holding onto the side, yep things easily slip below the waves and far from sight, nobody wishes to take a dip in our waters around the UK for most of the year, thats why the British Isles have been so hard to conquer by Europe
Also attached a yellow or other bright coloured float to it so it doesn’t sink if it does fall in the water😊
What happened to the big boat? I like the new boat. You can ski behind it. Lol! I'd keep an eye on the air cleaners. They could restrict air flow.
Those filters you put on will not hold up on the diesels when under full throttle, a diesel engine pulls alot more air than a gas. It takes over 500 lbs of compression on a diesel engine to make it fire the fuel, more compression more suction, get some filters made for your engines or filer the air that is coming into the engine compartment
Your engine blowers should pull air into the compartment. On my American single engined 4.2Litre Diesel powered cruiser, 2 of 3 blowers suck air in on the Port side and 1 of 3 push the air out on the Starboard side. More air in for the Diesel Turbo.
Pleased the list is getting smaller. Great that you have tested your Anchor skills out. Would be great to see some Dolphins playing around the Bow some time. Will Sarinda be as quick I wonder.
Maybe get a snubber for your anchor chain so it's not pulling on the capstan .... A quiet day at anchor but you never know when the weather might change.
Definitely need a snubber for the chain.
Was a great day out playing on the water despite there being no fished, Gemma's "Here Fishy Fishy" amazingly didn't work! Thanks for the trip and sorry I bottled out on the cleaning due to a flippin' long drive home 🙃
Glad you enjoyed it, hopefully the fish will come back soon! Next time you’re scrubbing the deck!!
@@ShipHappensAdventures it's a deal!!
Silicone hose is fine. No issues at all, just neet to pay more attention to the clamps as it can be a bit slippery.
Also, Gemma, not sure if you'd noticed but there's some sound issues with the videos. Most of this one and a couple of previous have been left chanel only which is terrible to listen to with headphones.
Would be great if you have mic issues to just make the audio mono.
Keep up the good work, cheers.
This reminds me of my time growing up near the mouth of the Strait of Belisle, thanks!
You want to connect the chain to the front of the anchor and tie a breakaway cable to the eye on the shaft then if you get the anchor cought in a rock the tie string or cable tie will break and pull the anchor out backwards
Definitely replace the engine cover gasket.....
YES - blue silicon. I worked for NAPA Auto Parts and we used to sell that to boaters all the time. There are also stainless marine hose clamps available as well.
You need a second boat hook to hook out the first one when you throw it in to show it floats and you can't reach it again 😁
Hey Simon would not be a bad idea to take the Capstan off and give it a good clean and bit of grease
You need to have the anchor rigged so it it gets stuck you can recover the anchor backwards. So fix the chain to the bottom of the anchor and use some cable ties at the top of the anchor where you got it now
She is coming along nicely keep up the good work
Always enjoy both your channels. I'm Can't wait to see what you two are up to.👍😎
Thanks 👍
You need a snubber on the anchor to make it safe at anchor also better for the boat too.
Packing tape or sticker glue removal use mineral turps
I have a trawler yacht with twin engines. The rubber hose on the stern glands was replaced 5 years ago with silicon hose fitted by an authorised Volvo Penta dealer, they no longer use rubber as silicon does not degrade like rubber to date no issues and the glands have sea water pumped in to help cool them.
Thank you for the info, very helpful Gary!
Looking good. Does the black rubber evenly support the deck lid and obsorb any movement
There is very little of dust dirt or pebbles on a boat second its a diesel usually diesel fuel isn't explosive. there no need to have flame arrestors on the motors or foam air filters paper filters work nicely. last silicone hoses are good and expensive were black hoses will out last the blue silicone hose @ half the price
Love both your channels Hampshire 🇬🇧
Need to put some patches on that canvas in the back where the snaps are for the part that you just fixed. It looks like it has some issues, and it will just get much worse if you do not address it. Time for Simon to get back to the sewing machine. 😀
These two are hilarious I love ther sites excellent
An old salt taught me to lubricate your cover snaps both male and female with Vaseline. I didn’t like the mess so I’ve used silicone spray and Qtips. Never had a problem again.
You guys are doing a great job restoring this Tiara. It is a nice boat and will be the better fishing boat in every way so you might not need the cute run-about you restored. Looking forward to your first over nighter adventure.
Warning on using foam filters , issue with ingestion into turbo . Extreme vacuum can course ingestion, major damage. Best keep originals
that anchor can set up as a rotten bottom anchor bye drilling a hole at the bend in the front this is were you attach the chain an use some strongish cable tie at the other hole that way if the anchor gets stuck you can use the engines to break the cable tie an the anchor will come out in reverse
Bring Out All Tools. Boat
You by now have epoxied the snap holes. The perfect thing for that may be “rivnuts”. Unless the hold is so damaged they won’t work.
Lots of good DIY fixing advice for you but not so much on the fishing.
Personally I would have a landyard on each of the rods when you are motoring between marks. Hitting a big wave could easily bounce them out.
I had them on the kayak and now the little SIB. I have had a near miss with a SONIK rod on the SIB and the 4mm bungee lanyard saved it from going over .
I have a small karabiner on one end to clip it , a draw string adjuster for the length and velcro tabs to wrap round the rod above the reel stem.. no probs for a man with your new sewing skills.
In the USA we use GOOF OFF Pro Strength Remover in a yellow can It will wipe permanent markers from anything... straight away one swipe as well as label and tape adhesive maybe two or three swipes.
that foam air filter wont last too much suction
If you want to show the ray marine without any flicker, use a phone with slo-motion or super slow motion video as the recording rate will theoretically be faster.
Great tip thank you x
All looking great guys love that boat 😊🇦🇺
in regards to the air filters you might have to look into it as it might be fueled i mean set up to go with no filters and running a filter might make it run richer??
Great stuff, impressive.
Hint: WD-40 is great for removing adhesive tape residue.
We used 2040 from wurth, basically the same thing
Great to see you out enjoying the boat. Good progress on the snagging list as well. 👍
Loving your journey....thanks for bring us along too.
If you need a hard filler that can be ground down, sanded, drilled, threaded, filled, use backing soda and super glue. Amazing stuff. Try it!
Awesome guys gives me inspiration to do mine 😂 keep up the great videos
my cummins 6cta 8.3s have all silicone hoses now - much better and easier to work with
Another good video 🚤🛥⛵️👏👏👏👍👍👍😂😂😂
The boat looks gliding through the water 😊😊😊
Gemma's got a new ride!!!😉
The boat is fabulous guys it really goes well
Hi guys! It is great to see you anchoring and staying out on the water!!!
Enjoyed this episode and it was good to see Richard and Robo.
U do awsomrepair work Simon. Hats off mate.
the blue lights look awesome
Blue silicone hoses. Either add rubber edge protector gaskets to the repaired edge or replace the worn outer rubber with a newer thicker ones. Verify with boat manufacturer what is best for air filters ( noise dampening, engine tone, turbo fin protection, trapping durt and grime).
Checking items off the to do list. Maybe discovering some new ones.
Top Job 🤘
When we had our boat and went fishing in the same area I was the only one to catch a fish. I was 10 at the time, great memories! Wish I could go again.
Hi guys, I just love that boat you can be able to go out for a weekend for yourselves. Anyone else around you good honey moon boat LOL keep up the good work I really love and appreciate you both and the old mate. This with you Cliff from Logan City, Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺👨🏻🦽
Great video image from the drone!! You should make a longer version of that as a promotion video on the site👍
0:10 wow! That is one attractive boat! 😮
Only way you will have match to another screen is to run everything off a sync pulse generator. That’s why TV stations are expensive!
Great to see you getting out there.😊
It’s nice to be out, just been better weather now! Roll on summer
@@ShipHappensAdventures especially on such a comfortable boat. 30mph? Bet that sucks the petrol. I really hope the new boat gets your children involved this summer, but beware …….teenagers. 🤣🥴
I have not yet commented on this battleship. She is an absolutely perfect cruiser for the Atlantic! You could pop down to Dublin for Guiness or cut right through Scotland. You also have great accommodations for the TT on the Isle of Man. 2 or 3 hour cruise maybe. Outstanding work bringing her up to snuff. Cheers from the Pine Tree State
The list is endless they say.......at least you crossed a few off today. We have high winds tonight bit scary isnt it. Never known wind like it for January have you. Take care 😊😊
For the first time anchoring, you made it look easy enough............👍
Easier than pulling the anchor up by hand like we have to do on the little boat!
Simon, you should always take the opportunity to coat nuts and bolts and even washers with a coating of lithium or silicon grease while you have them apart! In a marine environment I mean!
Hi , absolutely no reason you can't use silicone cooling pipes . Parker make extremely good ones for this purpose. Good viewing great job
You can make and install a one cm SS rod that mounts on the deck just forward of the chain winch so it protrudes into the chain gap on the gypsy just where the chain is supposed to exit into the hawse pipe. It will physically dislodge the chain and prevent it from wrapping around the winch causing a jam when you least need one...
People use silicone tubing on reef tank return pumps which are obviously salt water so it should be fine on a boat. It's not so good for going round corners though as it's prone to kinking.
Inboard motors come with a flame arrestors mounted to the carbs to help reduce the chance of fire or bilge explosions. If you get a backfire through the carb and light up those foam filters you won't be very happy. Like you said though less likely to happen with a diesel engine than a gasoline engine.
Keep up the great work that you guys do, A tip if I can Offer ?? Petrol is a Great Tape or Adhesive remover BUT be careful, also Brake cleaner is as Good.
You don’t need air filters on big marine diesels, they will restrict the air flow, think of the volume of air required at high revs (capacity of engine x rpm), I have twin Cummins 504 and they just have a box with heavy wide metal gauze and are more for sound reducing, and loving both channels!!!
New cold air intake just bumped up the hp for some bolt on performance! 😃👍
As previously mentioned, the rubber should be giving the floor panel support buy has gone all soft and squidgy over time. Some very thin stainless over the edge might stop future wear.
Usually boats that size don't want top end, but want to get out of the hole quickly, just see what the stock propeller is and adjust accordingly?
Just fyi, Naptha will take the tape residue off quickly and easily. It won't harm the finish either. Been using it for that purpose on furniture, as well as pretty much anything else, for 38 years.
An hgv truck air cleaner fix..?? where does the inboards breath air in from....
It's dropped down because the seals have degraded and compressed, the wear on the cover and the lip is an effect, not a cause. You need to replace the seals in the deck opening. You don't want to lift the covers out of contact with the seals or if you get blue water in the cockpit it will flow into the engine compartment.
3:50 Don't drop the windlass handle Simon!
it must be a balancing act with the three boats, but I for one am glad you have the three, Sarinda is going to be a fantastic craft but you need quality time for recreation as time ticks by, or you will bog yourselves down, the other boats need work but at least on a nice day you can go fishing or explore the coast or just anchor out in the bay with a hot bevvy.
Isn't that gasket for engine cover supposed to help hold it up? Looks worn out and compressed on screen
I still can't wait to hear the howl of two Detroit Diesel 2-stroke Silver Series motors.
Hoses on marine engines that carry sea water are normally of a type called “steam” hose. Extra heavy. For the fresh water cooling water silicone hose should be fine.
Air filters are normally not installed on marine engines because there is very little dust to be ingested. No real harm in fitting an air filter as long as it doesn’t obstruct airflow too much
Simon, Simon, Simon....... your engine covers should rest only on the rubber seals, there should be no GRP contact. The fibreglass you've repaired represents a point load.. Your floor load should be evenly distributed across the rubber seals, it will then isolate vibration, engine gases and noise. It will also level up your floors. Suggest you measure the difference needed and form up using bonded and layered hard and soft rubber mix, to improve on the original spec.
The Fishing. You should really drift along with the tide, you’ve much more chance of hitting on some fish, if you anchor and catch nothing instantly then you’re very unlikely fish will come to you. A very weak tide isn’t great for fishing and neither is a strong tide. Good luck next time!👍🏻
Could you also put some more rubber seal in the grove where it has been compressed to raise the panels up a bit
