  • Indian pond heron (Nepali: असकोटे बकुल्लो) or paddybird (Ardeola grayii) is a small heron. The plumage of this beautiful bird is white and earthy in color with a gray stripe down its back. The bird originated in the prehistoric world (formerly Africa, Europe, and Asia) where it ranges from Iran in the south to Pakistan, India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in the east. During the breeding season or from March to September, the color of its legs changes from green to yellow. Most of the time it is quiet but it also makes a croaking sound like a frog croaking. Due to its small size, it is difficult to spot this bird at a distance. Its style of stunning or confusing the enemy is excellent. This bird flies only when we approach it. It is believed that the bird is visually impaired or blind due to this behavior. This video is taken from Buddhashanti rural municipality, Jhapa, Koshi Province, Nepal.
