Overheard a woman talking about barn swallows, who said she knocked down a nest and stomped the eggs bc they are nuisance birds. I was speechless.

A couple helium balloons worked for us. Shiny Mylar balloons with a face seem best.

They will get used the shiny stuff too
For 20 years been frying owls , rubber snakes , tin pie plates and foil , and eventually they always came back
Finally has to line the upper part of my porch with netting to keep the away

Yikes! I hope that doesn’t happen here. Renting scaffolding to get up there is a pain. Strangely, the swallow that showed up this year gave up on the porch after 2 days. He must have found a back up spot pretty fast. 🤞🤞

I have a 16 ft porch in central Texas with a similar problem. What about an outdoor rated crystal chandelier in your porch and keeping it on 24/7/365?

    • @AbbottsAtHome
      @AbbottsAtHome  24 дня назад +3

That could work. Just crystals with a light throwing reflections around should be a good deterrent. Once they lay eggs and have babies in the nests, they can't really move until the babies are ready to fly. So, you really have to stop them from nesting every year. Good luck!!

A shiny hubcap hanging seems to be doing the job at my house. It twirls in the wind and I think the reflection of themselves scares them off.

I’ve never, ever heard of this bird. I had to Google it.

I've always loved seeing them swoop around at dusk catching bugs. But, I didn't know the name either until they nested on my porch. 😅

Thank you. I have the same problem with bird nests. The pole is a good idea. I’ve heard that using the color blue like blue strips of paper tape or fabric keeps them away as well.

I've heard that too. The first year they showed up, I actually had the ceiling painted a medium brown. I always wonder if that attracted them.

I didn’t know that they can make nests in the row!! 😮

You can usually see them under overpasses in long lines. It’s pretty cool when it’s not on your house. 😊

Help! I’m having this exact problem now 😩😩. They won’t leave even after their babies are grown and flying around. We literally just put up those shiny twisty things and they still are trying to remedy above my door now. We are definitely getting an owl

I think it's harder to get rid of them once they have babies. They can't really move the babies so they stay no matter what. So sorry. Just be ready for next year with all of the deterrents. All of those babies are going to come to your house to build nests next year. Good luck!!

We have to wash it every day. We probably have dozens if not 30 or 40 barn, swallows, front and back of the home during the off-season after they migrate away, you can remove and clean the area where the nest was or is. That’s fine. They’ll rebuild it when they come back or they’ll ignore it and not use it and build somewhere else. They only sure far away to get rid of them or not have them is you have to take away shoulders ledges inside angles with places that can per take away their ability to nest and they will not come around.

That sounds horrible. Have you tried hanging netting to block them?

They eat mosquitoes so I’m cool with them.

I love that too! They can live anywhere else on my property, just not my porches or outside of my bedrooms (they're LOUD) :)

    Would having laser lights help?

Maybe? I haven’t tried that. But you’d think it’d be similar to mirrors or shiny objects. 😊

I like them, as long as they stay off my house. :) They eat a lot of mosquitos.

They are very good birds to have around, and their numbers have been declining.

Also keep in mind that Barn Swallows eat horse flies, black widows, mosquitoes and winged termites.

Yep, they’re great big eaters. They can live anywhere else on my property, just not my house. 👍

Ours are afraid of nothing. I squirt them with the water hose when they fly by and they come right back they mingle and sing chirp chat or right along with my wife we will be outside sitting around and they’re right there sitting beside us on their little ledge, it’s the same Generation each year coming back. the babies this year will come back and make babies next year and then they’ll go back home and probably pass and you know in the next or latest generation Comes back and the life cycle continues, but by the time the young leaves their nest and perch where they grow for their first flight they are used to us. They’ve been sitting around with us the whole time and they’ll come back next year and greet us.😊

The mbta needs to be revoked at least for home owners. Crazy how people will refuse to listen to and follow the laws set so they can be decent drivers on the road but when people violate a 100 year old out dated treaty that was only put in place for hunters people scream and cry like babies.
These birds are complete and utter nuisances. Protect actual humans over these obnoxious animals.
