That Voodoo CD was such a pain to clean but it was worth it for the bit.

Alright Animal Collective enjoyers, time to do your thing
I would love to see an Alice In Chains DDD
@@gwynlefleur they are supposed to be but the Prince one took a while
My man was so exhausted by Prince he reviewed a man with 3 albums in 28 years.
My thoughts exactly 😂😭
He and Fiona Apple must understand each other. The longer you take, the more refined the album is.
I love that artist, she's so talented just like D' Angelo
15 years?
Jason’s Lyric is a film super well-known in the black community but didnt hit in the “mainstream” for various reasons
Classic
That Jason's Lyric joint STAYED in my grandma's VCR 😂
It was in heavy rotation on UHF stations where I lived in the 90s.
My white ass loves that movie
There are all-stars in that movie.

From Prince to D’Angelo
Artistry on point (especially as one of D’Angelo’s influences is Prince)
Discography is a juxtaposition to say the least
Well after talking about more than 35 albums last time, it's a good thing this one is shorter
@@eliasmg9144yeah, I know, I hope he’s well rested after giving us such a great video that I’ve watched at least 3 times😭❤️
THE influence
he should do frank ocean next
It's like the difference between Steven Spielberg and Terrence Malick
Jason's Lyric is a very well-known movie in the black community, along with movies like Set It Off, Poetic Justice, Baby Boy, etc...
THAT PART!!!!
It's wild how so many popular and significant films and albums from the 90s exist in an almost "vacuum"? I think in many ways this was the last decade when there was Black culture that existed in this way. When there was music/art/film that didn't "crossover" and Black artists that did.
It's still funny tho as someone who grew up in the 90s to see something that was very popular like 'Jason's Lyric' be kind of unknown to non Black folks lol.
as a white girl born in the late 2000s, i can confirm. i had absolutely no idea who d’angelo was before clicking on this… maybe it’s bc i’m just kinda getting into hip hop and rnb (my parents are very much rock and roll only ppl, and the ppl at school really only listen to super new stuff). still interested to watch since i love these videos… didn’t expect to sit through a 2 hour video abt prince, an artist i only know from his top 5 most popular songs.
I think it has to do with how music was marketed at the time. Radio was much bigger and with different demographics (rnb, country, MOR, Adult Contemporary, etc.).
@@clairdeloonaORBIT SPOTTED

THIS MAN HAD ONE OF THE BEST COMEBACKS OF ALL TIME.
Black Messiah is GOATed. Stupidly good record.
Kanye reference
Is it really a comeback if he only drops one album per decade to begin with?
@@THICCTHICCTHICC.-. I'll take what I can get
Maxwell too
Hyperbolics are required for someone like D’Angelo, he’s simply one of if not the greatest musicians of all time imo. He’s truly a singular talent
Just like Pikmin.
As someone who played Red Dead Redemption 2, "Unshaken" was responsible for one of my most unforgettable experiences as a gamer. Insane song.
Also , fun fact, Chicken Grease is kinda of a Prince tribute as well, considering the term chicken grease comes from Prince and how he would call Major 9th chords "adding chicken grease" to a chord and the song is littered with major 9th chords , everyone should check out the 33 1/3 book for Voodoo especially if you're a super fan like me
But also, it evolved from a jam on Mother's Son by Curtis Mayfield
Untitled is also D trying to channel Prince's ballad chops
@@josemariareyes3448 yeah it sounds almost like Do Me Baby
Bucket of Crisco sittin' on top of tha stove
As a huge huge D'angelo fan. Thank you for simply bringing awareness to such a great and amazing artist. Really, thank you.
Maaan, same here. I came to comment but you said it all 🙌🏿
D’Angelo’s story is really so sad but it was so wonderful to see him come back in a better headspace
Questlove was DJing a lot in New York and indie bands would come to him and tell him how important voodoo was to their development. When he told Dlo that hipsters were going crazy over the album years later he genuinely couldn’t believe it. Dangelo is truly a gift from god
It’s a lot of 90’s black cinema you should dive into, Jason’s lyric just scratches the surface
It must feel good to make a 26 minute long video after the almost 2 hour marathon that was the Prince DDD.
Hey friend , thanks for covering one of my biggest influences ever. just chiming in for folks who are curious, Jasons Lyric was relatively big in the black community. now that im older im realizing it was ONLY big in the black community, Idk if it got an actual movie release, but it was heavilyyyyy played on BET growing. I bet they still play that movie as much as they did then. As an older cinephile I'll admit the movie wasn't thattttt great from a writing prespective, but I think it opened the door for movies like Moonlight to explore black masculinity. but you're right Black Men United shoulda been way bigger then what it was, but I think it only tells us something about how the entertainment industry valued black men at that time. I wonder how the song and the movie would be received today... really interesting case study ... also kinda wild that his FIRST credit was writing for the biggest names in soul/r&b
That D'Angelo episode of _Atlanta_ was just... (chef's kiss!) 😘🤌
D is absolutely one of the best artists alive. 3 albums are enough, when they're THAT good!!!
PS. _Jason's Lyric_ has always been a certified hood classic 😉
He’s one of these artists that never made a bad song
Voodoo is probably my fav album from the 21st century btw
D is insanely underrated, he only had 3 albums but he did more than enough to show us he's up there with Prince and Marvin and Donny Hathaway
It’s really weird hearing someone say they didn’t know BMU or Jason’s Lyric existed….like both are iconic moments from the 90’s. But glad you found them.
I'm glad you used the horrifying Wayne Knight CGI to represent Space Jam, truly encapsulates that entire film
This video manages to fill in the neo-soul shaped hole in the 90s episode of Defined The Decade™©®.
Considering that album's impact on popular R&B for nearly a decade, I was genuinely surprised it didn't make it.
Imagine telling anyone with melanin darker than a Dunkin Donuts latte in the late 90s that Brown Sugar would be seen as less influential than Green Day's Dookie. You'd see some hands thrown.
You know it’s a good day when mic the snare drops a new video
D’Angelo is the Sade of Neo Hip Hop Soul. Takes large breaks and always comes back with that strong fire!
When it came to listening to D’Angelo I listened to his discography backwards. I started with Black Messiah first, Voodoo second, and Brown Sugar last. I don’t know why I did it like that but I did gain an appreciation for all his albums that way.
You probably take a shower then take a dump 😂
what album did you like best of the three?
This guy could have made an updated King Gizzard video from scratch and it STILL would be a breather after the Prince video.
6:07 The Bob George reference, made me subscribe immediately. My man is tapped in. Also, D’Angelo alone Eric Clapton to hear the record wasn’t really so random, considering they had been performing together in the years prior.
Best concert I have ever seen, D'Angelo in Hamburg 2015 - such a talented man. Thanks for the breakdown. His third album saved me at the time ...
I was there, not a full venue, he staged dived and was held up by about 7 of us. I also missed questloves drumstick by the skin of my teeth, declined his vest, which D threw as well. Great concert and maybe kept me here in hamburg at the time. Markthalle.
We need the Janet jackson deep dive plzzzzz
As a D'Angelo fan when I first heard Unshaken while playing RDR2 I freaked out, the song plays in a such emotional heavy stage of the game it almost made me cry
I discovered his discog earlier this year despite hearing him on other albums without realizing it, mostly on Ms. Lauryn Hill's Miseducation. He's easily jumped up my list as one of my most beloved artists for his just complete variety and layered sounds
The greatest R&B/Neo Soul Artist of All Time. 💯👍🏾
He's probably my favourite artist ever. I've listened to his album Voodoo countless times. It never gets old for me.
Frank Ocean on that D'angelo content pace
You can tell Mic took it easy after that Prince video
I love DDDs like this, cause I am NOT familiar with the world of neo soul, so a crash course like this really opens my eyes and gets me familiar with a fascinating new facet of the music world
Yes, Mic The Youngin'' (and non-watcher of BET), Jason's Lyric is very much a thing lol 😆. Especially in the black community
If I recall correctly during that D'Angelo verzus friends event he said that a new album was coming out soon, that was in 2021 and we're 8 months into 2023 lmao. I can't wait for the next album which will come out in 2028.
Did you know: Prince actually mentioned D'angelo in a song called "get yo' groove on (bring the new D'angelo)
This man means everything to me. Voodoo changed the way I think about music. Love D. D'Angelo that is...
I also didn’t get the “think of your grandma’s cooking” unless he was the meal👀
Arguably the most gifted musician in history, ironically Prince was a big influence
This video just made my whole month! We need more D'Angelo content on the internet. He's such an influential force not only in neo-soul and r&b but in music in general. We need more videos like this! Thank you for such a well made video as always.
D’Angelo is a true artist. Voodoo was a great album. Black Messiah is special to me. It came during a tough time in my romantic life so it always touches me. God bless him.
Voodoo is the most ethereal masterpiece. ever. been listening to it since it came out and still can’t wrap my head around it
From a huge D’Angelo fan - this video is amazing. Your sense of humour is excellent also.
This was the perfect DDD comedown after the Prince epic, while also serving as a palette cleanser as well.
Now holding out hope for that Madonna / Bob Dylan DDD ;)
Excellent video Mick
Great video! And if anyone is interested in discovering more neo soul music, check out Lewis Taylor's first album released in 1996. Two little fun facts: Aaliyah declared herself a fan of his after listening "Bittersweeet", the album's main single. Also, D'Angelo contacted Lewis Taylor to work on a follow up to "Brown Sugar" in NY. Taylor said that he was left astray by him and went back home disappointed.
Good tip, I don't remember him at ALL!
This video might one of my favorite deep dives you’ve ever done… sometimes I feel D’Angelo’s brilliance is forgotten about in mainstream music media.
black messiah is my favorite album of the 10s. no skips, just an absolute experience from front to back.
Artists can take as long as they need as far as I'm concerned. They don't owe us anything.
highly recommend looking into the soulquarians era, digging the greats has great video about it. more than just voodoo, mamas gun, and like water for chocolate came out of that era, things fall apart by the roots too. their process of making those albums is amazing, their dedication to the music and process of creating songs after looking through record shops for old records and listening to them, it makes sense how so many of these albums are in another level
side note: questloves drumming style is super important to these albums too
One of the few artists with a perfect discography. Just masterful.
I had a school trip today, when i got back late at night i was expecting my parents to pick me up, but they apparently had an argument so bad they literally forgot about me. I had to walk for over an hour at 8 PM ( i live in one of the most dangerous parts of my city ) to get back home and almost got robbed because neither of them had the intention of picking me up. I was pissed as fuck and got home all sweatty and tired, but then a new DDD gets uploaded and im finally able to relax, thx man.
That sounds awful! I hope things are better now.
I've been reading books on Questlove and J Dilla this summer, this video is EXACTLY what I wanted! Great vid!!
I went to a lecture called Mathematics in Dilla Time earlier this year by Dr. Rob Rubalcaba. It was very enlightening
D'Angelo is the Tool of the R&B world is what you're saying
@MicTheSnare You forgot D’angelo’s feature vocals on the RH Factor’s cover of “Ill Stay”. The RH Factor was a band centered around trumpeter Roy Hargrove and featured some other fellow soulquarians. I’ll Stay was written by Funkadelic. Thank you Michael! You are an angel; good work!!!!
D' has been one of my favorite artists since Brown Sugar. Thus vid does him justice. thanks...
Oh my god I’m so glad you did D’Angelo!!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
When mic inevitable does an act that was in a group before going solo. (I.e. beyonce, Justin Timberlake) do y’all think he’ll touch on the groups work as well?
He did one on the Beatles and talked about their solo careers in a smaller segment, so maybe He mentions the band they were in at the start as a longer intro.
Great D'Angelo vid! Loved it! I have to see the Prince one next, seeing as I always adored him (no pun intended). To touch on what you mentioned about "Jason's Lyric," as some others previously commented, it's a classic film in the black community. It was released back in 1994, when I was 13 (I know I'm telling my age right now, but I don't care). The movie itself is about two brothers that grow up in the Third Ward of Houston, TX. They both suffer trauma in their lives, but one grows up to rise above the drama and finds love, whereas the other one succumbs to his PTSD and circumstances. I've seen it a million times, and I still revisit it to this day. Check it out whenever you have the chance.
I also remember when the song "You Will Know" was released. The song featured Tevin Campbell, Boyz II Men (who were at the height of their careers by this time), Gerald Levert, and Raphael Saadiq, just to name a few, so the track was a very big deal in the black community. It got a ton of radio airplay, and the video was constantly on BET. Not only that, I remember friends of mine taking the melody and making up their own lyrics for events, or just to mess around. However, I never realized that D'Angelo was a part of the Black Men United group (that's what the supergroup called themselves), so I still learned something new about the song! Again, this was a great vid. Outstanding work. ❤
Fun Fact: D‘Angelos plays keys on Seals Fly Like An Eagle Record
D'Angelo covered Soundgarden's Black hole sun..it's absolutely gorgeous!!
"So Far To Go" off J Dilla's The Shining album featuring Common and D'Angelo is a great track.
Jason's Lyric is a Black classic, it's always so interesting how separated our popular culture is sans a few exceptions, it's a good movie you should watch it.
9:17 "Hey, Questlove's in the house"
"Questlove you're not in the house"
It only seems logical that D'Angelo followed right after Prince. Two brilliant, cosmic, mercurial artists
I would love to see like video about Sade , her career is similar to D Angelo.
I'm amazed we're getting a DDD this soon after the last one, but I'm definitely not complaining.
Also, I'm British, we don't have D'Angelo's here, so I was very confused by the opening of this video lmao.
That Space Jam soundtrack was s o l i d . I believe I can fly. For you I will.
I don’t know if you’ll ever do it but there needs to be a DDD on Fugazi. Such a powerful and consistent band that more people need to acknowledge
D'Angelo being compared to My Bloody Valentine is the ultimate excuse for me to beg for the My bloody valentine DDD
your reaction to jason's lyric and black culture in general is insane. I be forgetting white people be white
lol and the way he pronounced one mo' gin was kind of funny
Lmaoooo😂
Did you want him to put a disclaimer in his videos that he is white?
@@JackJaileurlol that’s not necessary
@@JackJaileur i’ve been here many a times. just shocking cus what’s confusing to him is literally like back of hand knowledge to me
7:12 Keri Hilson's fans can relate. Funnily enough, they apparently share a lot of the same filler time as well; movies, guest appearances, and spiritual retreats.
And btw, this video makes me feel optimistic for her eventual album drop, in about 50 years, so I appreciate that!
As a former New England Authentic Eats employee, I appreciate the beginning skit
Mic needed to recover after Prince
Finally, a D'DDD
Ngl I’m not surprised that you weren’t aware of Jason’s Lyric. It’s a movie that did extremely well in the black community with its VHS release and reruns on BET. Primms Hood Cinema on RUclips has a vid explaining the plot of the film along with other classic black cinema.
When I first played RDR 2 and got to that part I had no idea who D’Angelo was. I didn’t know who it was until I saw the Dunkey video and him freaking out how D’Angelo was in the game. After that I looked him up and learned more about him and now I am equally as confused and amazed as to how he made a new song just for the game.
D’angelo is truly. A genius a talent which only comes around so often. We wait a long time for his music but my god it’s always worth the wait
Loved your MBV tie in with this one. As a child who was a teen in the 90s I liked them both.
You know when you mentioned the second album being compared to another everyone thought it would flop record, and that it had mos Def, Talib and Common on it, I thought it had to be the dropout.
Loved this one!! Voodoo is one of my favorite albums of all time. I would love to see a Sade deep discog dive!
This is genuis! Loved every bit of this. Thank you
I'm so here for D'ANGELO...on the top of my list of great musicians...that's it and that's all ❤
Love, love, love, love D'Angelo! Great pick for the video.
Do not try to understand D’Angelo, feel D’Angelo, we are D’Angelo. Remember that brothers and sisters
Brown Sugar is timeless. Such a classic
Love his work/artistry!
Great video. Love D'Angelo and learned more about him because of this.
Thanks for this video. Mr Dangelo is my all time fave... and I have watched alot of videos about him in my time... and this is a really great account of his life and works. You got my heartstrings and I really appreciate that.
I’d love to see one of these on Nas especially after his recent album
Jason’s Lyric is a Black cult classic film! Love D’Angelo! Thanks for the vid.
I’m so excited for this!! he’s such a great artist and this is definitely my sign to explore his discography
Really loving this series, it was an easy subscribe. I would love to see a future vid of the Talking Heads!
Thank you SO much for posting today, genuinely. I've been on vacation the past few days and while it's been great, I was missing home extra hard today. This was the serotonin boost I needed. I don't know a ton about D'Angelo but How Does It Feel is one of my new favorite songs, so this was such a nice surprise. And yes, I downloaded the playlist for my flight home. Thank you!!!
D'Angelo and Clapton are friends. Clapton played on few of his gigs.
Come back!!! Saw you at Forest Hills Stadium You were absolutely delightful ❤
I can't believe you just covered D'Angelo. I started listening to his work after nakinyko mashed up a Japanese song with One Mo'Gin
This is so cool
