I luckily purchased the base model 14" on Oct 31, and ~5 weeks later, this computer is brilliant. Change the display to "Scaled, More Space" in System Preferences, adjust the tracking etc and boom the laptop has a big enough screen, accessible, and easily transportable 👌🏼 For me this one's a keeper ❤️

Another great review Lisa. The rational side of my brain says that the M1 MacBook Air that I own is all the laptop that I really need. After going to the Apple store my irrational side is lusting for a 14" or 16" just for the display.
Yeah im getting one too. Coming from a 2015 15 one im never getting a 13-14 screen again. Its a hell of price though and it seem to be overpowered. At the same time my 2015 spins the fans like crazy just opening a few tabs. Might need that power in 6 years…
it is actually 1mm thinner than the 13" MBP, which makes it the thinnest MBP to date. but the tapered edges give the illusion of a thinner design on last year's model

Thanks for the review. My 14" Mackbook Pro came in and like it so far. Opted for the 1TB version since storage space pays for itself when running Windows in Parallels (i use the vm for work- not gaming). It may be pricey but you cannot beat the CPU/memory efficiency, the fantastic Mini LED Retina display (up to 1600 nits), fast NVE SSD drives and hat not heard the fan come on yet
@@supaxkawaii So far I've had it last a full workday with 30% charge left (60% screen brightness) so pretty good. I have not beat it up yet with video editing but it only got slightly warm once (with very little fan um). So it's cool for the most part
Your presentation style is excellent. I appreciated both the 14" and 16" reviews. That said, I'm not comparing the 13 and 14. I'm comparing the 14 Max and 16 Max. The ONLY thing keeping me from going 14 Max is the heat/fan issue. I plan on using 3 external monitors with the 14 Max in clamshell mode. I will be editing R5 8k video (which should be a standard test for reviewers as it is a beast to work with). With three external monitors and R5 footage, I'm concerned that the fans on a 14 Max will be loud whenever I'm working.
At 3.5 lb / 1.6kg it certainly isn't the lightest, but it's still very portable. Similar thickness to the 13" MacBook Pro (just doesn't look it without the taper).
@@mobiletechreview Hi, I think without the taper the actual *volume* of the new MBPs are bigger than the old ones, which would mean they don't just look bigger, they ARE bigger, even if their "maximum" dimensions are similar to the older models

I took my old MBP to the Apple Store to compare vs the new ones and the first impression was that the new machines were definitely *bigger* in a way not really captured by comparing the given dimensions between the different generations (thanks to the tapering!)
The SSD is not part of the SoC. The RAM is unified with the GPU and CPU and the SoC. Otherwise love your videos, just wanted to point that out. Thanks for the review.
Quick question about the display specs in this video: the maximum sustained brightness level listed here is around 500 nits, but Apple lists it as 1000 nits (neither of these figures refer to the peak HDR value of 1600). So is this a typo? Or is Apple misleading with their claim of 1000 nits maximum sustained brightness?
@@thomastuorto9929 like the 2016 onwards macs, you'll likely have to replace entire logic board in case of any serious issues. Problems are really rare though.
Given that WFH is going to be the way fore from now on, even post Covid, I can't imagine the need to have that big a screen anymore. Even if I do go to an office, most likely I'll be plugged in, and the times I carry the laptop will be for meetings, and not for coding sessions.
I still remember when i was first looking into a new laptop back in 2017 and i stumbled on this channel. Never looked back. Also thinking a lot about purchasing the 14 inch base model purely for the ports and the lack of touch bar :D
That's right. Face ID is obviously coming to the MacBook. Even though it's not in this version, Apple will probably save a lot of money sticking with this same exact screen design for the next several generations.
GPUs are extremely important for a certain group of non-graphical programmers, i.e. people in machine learning (deep learning and AI). Would be great if you have any update regarding that. Have been thinking if I should get the max out one for this purpose. But i heard that Nvdia GPU still preferable?

I use photoshop with some hi-res (500-megapixel composites) photography only 10 times a year, I have a total of 100 such photographs and I may do another 100 in my lifetime. What do you recommend 16 GB Ram or 32 GB ram? If I am spending 2500, I also care for longevity. I should be able to use this laptop for another 6-7 years without any slowdowns. I am ok with spending another 300 for an additional ram. Will the fast speed of SSD take care of my needs for the next 6-7 years?
Does it make sense to invest in extra Ram to achieve longevity? Or will 16GB be enough for the foreseeable future? As you can guess I’m not a very demanding user. Longevity is one of my priorities, owning a 2010 MBP currently.

@@Joanna_L CPU choice is between 8- or 10-cores. The 16 you're referring to is GPU, which can be upgraded to 24- or 32-cores if you need it. Unless you're dealing with seriously heavy computational and/or graphical work, the M1 Pro 10-core is plenty. I'd personally upgrade from the baseline 8-core if only to snag the upgraded power brick with fast charging. These are some seriously impressive machines. I don't think you'll need to worry too much about future proofing. If anything, upgrade the RAM to 32GB.

16 has a larger screen (notch seems smaller), bigger battery, runs cooler (less possible fan noise), better speakers… but it’s bigger and heavier and costs a bit more. I prefer the portability of the 14 over any of that myself, they are almost identical, so it’s just these minor differences
@@MissyMalaprop Echoing this. The 14" is the perfect portable powerhouse. Both battery life and sound are excellent, though both would be even better on the 16". Not worth the size tradeoff for me, but your use case may vary.
Another great review Lisa! Question: how do the 14" and 16" models compare in terms of speaker audio? Typically, larger laptops have more room for speaker drivers and therefore better audio, but since these machines seem to be breaking ALL the 'rules'...
I have the 14". The sound is nothing short of incredible (especially spatial audio, e.g. watching Blade Runner 2049 with Dolby Atmos). That said, the 16" can hit those low notes a bit more fully. Not worth the tradeoff for me, especially since the performance of the 14" is on par with the 16", and I'll be wearing IEMs for any serious listening. But your use case may vary.
@@jonathanbaird I doubt it's on the par. I had both at the same time and returned the 16". It was a huge difference, but not worth the extra bricks carrying around.
@@Cptblogh **Performance** is 100% on par. There are dozens of reviews verifying this. The 14" gets warmer and spins its fans a tad bit earlier than the 16", but in terms of computational output they're identical.

On 5:36 you try out the keyboard, it looks like it flexes a bit. Is this an illusion (the camera jumps a bit) or is the keyboard deck actually flex?
Almost no flex, one of the stiffest keyboard decks on the market.

Face ID is too thick to fit in the thin MacBook screens, but there's still no excuse for the large notch aside from just continuity between products.

If you want a quiet computer, go with the 16". It's not much more expensive (+200), but the thermal profile is way better!

That 1000 nits is for HDR only.

Yes if you connect to the external monitor via the Macbook's USB-C port since the HDMI port is only HDMI 2.0 (limited to 60hz).

The extra ram makes a negligible difference due to the fast SSD. I would put more focus on making sure you have enough storage than the memory.

The Mac will run quieter and cooler and faster for tasks like video editing. Unlike the MSI, it's not a great gamer.

@@MissyMalaprop Echoing this. The 14" is the perfect portable powerhouse. Both battery life and sound are excellent, though both would be even better on the 16". Not worth the size tradeoff for me, but your use case may vary.
In a blind test, I had my gf put both in palm of my hands….I could not tell which was the 14” or 16” (weight).
Another great review Lisa! Question: how do the 14" and 16" models compare in terms of speaker audio? Typically, larger laptops have more room for speaker drivers and therefore better audio, but since these machines seem to be breaking ALL the 'rules'...

I have the 14". The sound is nothing short of incredible (especially spatial audio, e.g. watching Blade Runner 2049 with Dolby Atmos). That said, the 16" can hit those low notes a bit more fully.
Not worth the tradeoff for me, especially since the performance of the 14" is on par with the 16", and I'll be wearing IEMs for any serious listening. But your use case may vary.
@@jonathanbaird I doubt it's on the par. I had both at the same time and returned the 16". It was a huge difference, but not worth the extra bricks carrying around.
@@Cptblogh **Performance** is 100% on par. There are dozens of reviews verifying this. The 14" gets warmer and spins its fans a tad bit earlier than the 16", but in terms of computational output they're identical.
