Thank you for watching everyone! I hope you enjoyed this combat tutorial. We are always looking for new ideas about what to stream, so if you have an idea, leave it in the comments below!
How about rolling a higher level character later and talking about new options like taking a level 1 feat at level 6
tell your son NONAT hi!
Creating a new monster.
Creating a new class.
Creating a new spell.
Obstacles and hazards during travel.
As someone coming over from 5e, I'd love to just have a video detailing the major differences and common rule mistakes made by DMs (and players) used to 5e. Something I can put in front of my players as a crash course because I know there's no way I'm gonna get them to read through the core rules.
I totally understand not wanting to make direct comparisons, so maybe a video covering some major things that players new to the system often miss, underutilize, or mess up?
One of the harder aspects of the system I found , is the runes …. Would love to hear your thoughts on runes / how magical items work
I want an entire NPC background and stat block for Granny Appleknees immediately.
This system is a gamemaster's dream. Encounter building is so accurate, easy, and runs so smoothly. Combat is engaging, and there are so many dials you can play with to make things easier or more challenging. I also thoroughly enjoy combat as a player. Never a dull moment. The streamlining is so effective and lends itself well to fluff and role-playing.
Thank you! Making a smoother combat experience was one of our big goals with the system!
Pf2e is the most fun I've had as a GM
I'm barely beginning to learn about Pathfinder 2e (as you can imagine, I was drawn here by the famous battle of ORC VS wizards) and I gotta say - not only are the videos thoroughly informative, but you gentlemen are both very charismatic and entertaining, which turns a fairly "technical" video into an absolute pleasure to watch.
And yeah, the more I read about p2e, the more in love I am with its design, and how well it works. Stellar job, mr. Bulmahn.
Well, we do try. To be honest.. Dan is the charming one. I am just a rules goober.
@@JasonBulmahn You've got a very engaging style of presenting the information. Very easy to listen to and follow along.
Yes. Definitely. I appreciate all the RUclipsr efforts to make videos for the newcomers and the curious, but your videos are very easy to digest and fun to watch. I actually sit all the way through your long videos. Lol
3 action economy and overall horizontal character make Pathfinder 2E so flexible to play yet easy to understand.
My bf and I are 5E refugees, new to PF2 and we get excited for each new video in this series Jason!. One suggestion for new players, GMs: during the combat, it would be helpful if you walked us through the math of the bonuses & penalties. I think you and Dan were shortcutting it from time to time, like with the Cinder Rat, and it got a little confusing. Thanks!
Jason, love your videos, the atmosphere is relaxing and friendly, the fact that you go over all of the pathfinder things alongside your friend, says a lot about you. I appreciate your work man, PF2 has become my dream tabletop game. So glad so many people get to experience it too.
That is awesome to hear! Glad you have found a game you love in Pathfinder!
Now need a more battle-hardened Dan seek vengeance upon the cider rat. Culminating in a epic sewer chase scene.
New GM here. LOVE to see that Exploration Mode video.
It is on the list!
Great! Looking forward to it.
Love THIS video, BTW.
I'm introducing PF2E to my longtime group this Friday. We were just going to build characters...but thanks to this timely release, I'm going to go over combat basics as well. Thanks Jason!
Silo's Big Adventure!
Enjoying your videos! I like you and Dan working together. Great fun!
I really enjoyed this video series. It really helped the rules from the Core Rulebook finally “click” for me as a new user. As a migrant of 5e, this whole system solves a lot of odd edge cases in gaming and just makes a heck of a lot more sense as a DM.
Also, fwiw, I love the back and forth between you and Dan. Great stuff! 😊
Fantastic video! Keep them coming. The more I read the core rule book, the more I appreciate the amount of detail and care your company put into the system. And for that, I thank you.
You guys were so much fun to watch!
But an important strategy Silo missed was, it would have been better to use the table as cover instead of doing a normal attack twice.
Pathfinder 2E is an amazing game, thanks for these videos!
Correction, Cinder Rat vs Silo, Second attack on Silo: Cinder Rat rolls a 17 to hit vs Silo's 18 AC and misses. EXCEPT, Silo is Sickened and not only does Sickened reduce all d20 rolls by 1, but it also lowers all DC's and AC is a DC. Thus the Cinder Rats 17 actually should hit because Silo was Sickened!
I was wondering if anyone would catch that. I caught it in the moment, but decided not to go back and correct myself. 1 Hero Point to you!
Great video. More Mrs. Apple knees and her adventures of saving PC's please.
I have a theory about Granny Appleknees....she's a powerful but benevolent Hag that put the rats in her basement to help train up young Silo.
I'd buy things from your affiliate link.
IF YOU HAD ONE!!!
Yeah.. I am just bad at this...
Fine.. I added them to the description!
Thank you for letting me give you money!
excited every time you post a video like this
Just got my beginner box in the mail! Thanks so much for these videos
GREAT video!
As a new PF gamemaster, I was wondering about Medicine and resting. PF 2E seemed ridiculously generous compared to the OSR. I figured the BB was being very nice to the players. I can see now that it all depends on the scenario, as stated in the end of the video.
BTW, I have to say the PF community has been outstandingly patient and kind in their welcoming in of us newbies, THANK YOU. Thanks to WotC for helping in that decision.
I'm SO sorry I didn't give this system a chance earlier. Thing is, I played 3-3.5 until the wheels fell off. LOVED that system. Paizo was always a huge creative force back then. I just wish PF 2E had been D&D 3. Tried 5E, it just needed a LOT of help from me to make it at all challenging. The OSR will always have my heart, but, it's not 1983 and my players have full time jobs. I THINK my players are all in on 2nd edition. Please don't go making a new edition until I catch up! ;).
Loving it! Please more!
How about doing some magic combat with Dan's sorcerer?
Your GM style is a delight to watch. You can tell how much you love playing / running games ! Cheers 🍻!
Even though I know the rules already, I love hearing you explain them. Which you do very well. Thank you for helping to design an awesome game
Would love to see that tutorial for the other modes as well!
The initiative system is one of my favorites about the systen.
The frog/lizard could be part gecko which have super suckers on their feet like an octopus. so he is just adhered to the hat.
Why aren't more RPG Designers like this ? :D
Amazing video! It helped me understand a lot of rules. I am looking forward to see how you handle Recall Knowledge in combat! Question: what happens with the persistent damage once you fall to 0 hp?
Persistent damage would continue after falling unconscious, but instead of dealing damage, it would just increase your dying value by 1. Very bad stuff...
Dan is rolling like me. Last game I had seven attacks in a row that rolled less than 7.
New ideas: How about a new adventure stream? Or how about a sequel of my favorite: Band of Bravos. I loved that. *Mek*.
Feed the algorithm.
Not gonna lie, I kinda miss just having an Initiative bonus. This just seems like added complexity for very little payoff.
Perception was already part of the game, and letting you use other skills lets us have setups and abilities that trigger off what you are doing while exploring. The key there is exploration mode and allowing it to affect the start of a fight.
Im running a game, and im really struggling with how exploration mode works. I have a marching order and default exploration activity, but im just not exactly sure how to run it correctly.
I'd like to see maul comeback.
Although there are 4 degrees of success, I believe that Striking ignores the Critical Failure does it not? Really enjoying all of this.
There are some class features that take advantage of critical misses. Off the top of my head I remember swashbucklers can use their reaction to strike an opponent who critically misses. There may be other examples.
I haven’t quite finished yet, but I have the question I started watching with.
This is one player at lvl1? And a giant rat that’s c-1, which would be around - moderate encounter for this?
I’m trying out a quick one shot with two lvl1 pcs and I’m just finding it difficult to find any help or monsters that would be good to try out that won’t wipe, being level 1 there isn’t a lot of leeway in the below levels for creatures.
Should I run some weak versions of monsters as basically minions?
Roughly a moderate encounter. He probably could have taken on 2 of them, but much more than that would have been a challenge.
What happened to dan doing nefarious things when his camera turns on?!
He's not doing anything illegal, if people don't like it no one is forcing them to watch!!!
I'm gonna be honest here... I kinda ran outta gags for that bit. I'm not happy about it, but I'm always open to suggestions! lmao!
1:08:07
When are these cinnamon oatmeal raisin cookies of delicious healing making an appearance in official material?
If the cinder rat attacked him again while he was unconscious, what would happen?
He would automatically go to the next tier of dying I think.
Dan you going to do Pathfinder Fridays again.
*sigh* dare to dream. I loved Pathfinder Fridays!!
I sometimes let a character who opens the fight with an attack use their attack roll for their initiative. Though if they end up first I sometime consider to give them less actions on that round 'cause they already "spent" some
Question, In the first round of combat Dan was stealthed so wouldnt he get a bonus to hit because the rat would of been flatfooted? So if the rats AC was 15 he would of hit with the arrow if he had a +2 bonus.
I think that was nullified with the rat getting full cover, I'd have to watch it again to confirm.
@@zolgathor Your right I forgot about the full cover. 🙂
I didn't think Dex added to damage. That was mentioned in the other character creation video. It only added to attack. Did that change?
The Rogue's "Thief" subclass features allow you to use your Dex modifier for damage instead of Str when attacking with a Finesse weapon. I believe it's the only way in the game to get a Dex damage modifier.
Jeremy has the right of it here. The Rogue lets you add Dex to damage on some weapons (which is why he does not get it on the spear).
Just curious why Jason is not using Nexus? or Foundry!!!! 😛
Mainly just because I learned Roll20 forever ago and am able to pull together content really fast there. No dig on the other platforms. They are both great, but one is in Alpha and the other I am not quite as familiar with.
Hey Jason. Is there a way to pick up two objects with one action?
I mean, I have been known to allow it if the items were put down next to each other.
@@JasonBulmahn So, in this video the rogue wanted to pick up both his weapons, but doing so costs an action for each. Is there a feat that allows quickly picking up multiple larger objects such as weapons? If there is a feat that allows drawing two weapons at a time, could it be reasonable to assume they could pick up two weapons at a time? Along the same line of thought, is there a feat to pick up and use an improvised weapon and attack with it in the same action?
I'm new to looking at what is possible in Pathfinder 2e, and am possibly getting that amazing humble bundle deal.
@@Ptollemios there are feats like Quick Draw which allow you to draw a weapon as a Free Action when you roll initiative. Classes like the Gunslinger can get class features which make it even more potent, like the Way of the Drifter being able to draw a one handed melee weapon, a one handed firearm or crossbow AND Stride towards the nearest visible enemy (Drawing for free when you roll initiative, then being allowed to use that Stride as a free action if it’s your first action)
The thing that I’ve been enjoying most about DM’ing PF2E (I’m running Strength of Thousands) is that power through leveling more often comes from improvements in action economy via Activities, Hasting, Free Actions etc; as opposed to direct power scaling.
Love the content, any plans on making shorter more edited videos in the future?
Maybe. I do enjoy the longer, conversational aspect of these, but I get that for some folks, a quicker, flashier video would be useful.
@@JasonBulmahn Thanks for the reply! Yeah I'm just trying to share out to my players as best I can as we make the switch and your videos have been a key in my own education. If not I'll keep watching and summarizing.
He should've Sneaked with his first action to stay hidden, not simply Stride. Right?
So, I’ve been in disagreement with my DM on Critical Failures in Combat. In the video, you mention that it IS possible to have a Critical Failure in combat, but don’t actually go into any detail as to what that entail (from watching the segment on Crits).
I can’t find anything on the AoNPRD website that includes anything regarding Critical Failure consequences for Attack Rolls and other sources on Reddit state that since it’s not included under the Strike rules, a Critical Miss is treated as a Normal Miss (unless the target of the missed attack has an ability that can punish misses/critical misses).
Any help would be greatly appreciated as we’ve only had 2 sessions so far and he had our L1 party against a level 4 boss and if my Fighter even thought about attempting a 2nd attack with the -5 Multi-Attack Penalty would have meant an almost-certain critical failure (which this DM always liked to punish further in PF1e with ‘confirming nat 1 failures’ eg: drop your weapon/get it stuck in a tree etc).
Thanks in advance!
a critical failure is no different than a normal failure on a Strike
@@EasilyBoredGamer I think I finally convinced him not to punish Crit Fails with anything not listed in the descriptions. Otherwise, this party would have died by now for sure!
I finally got him to see that Swashbucklers get an ability at L3 and Fighters gain an option at L8 or so, but punishing Crit Fails (either PC, NPC or Monster) is VERY rare at our current L3 party.
If I'm in a tree can I roll acrobatics for initiative
Maybe.. if you start the combat by jumping out the tree to surprise your foes!
@@JasonBulmahn ha en garde you foul beast
The cinder rat had 4 actions, 1 to move, 1 to smoke, 2 attacks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Haha not really, the smoke is a spherical aura that just exist near it perpetually up to 5ft, any creature that enters it's space must make a 22 fortitude save to abstain from its effects.
Smoke is an aura , not an action :)
Not big on the 3 action thing so far. Better than dnd5e for sure but the 2 action (move plus standard or full round) from dnd3e is by far the most intuitive and improves combat speed imo. Combat in modern ttrpgs is obnoxiously slow.
the combat system doesn't seem to be any better or worse than the previous edition. i utterly LOATHE what they did to spellcasting and channeling energy for clerics though. and turning the game into a MMORPG without a computer is NOT a step forward.
