Thank you so much folks for stopping by to watch this tutorial. If you are interested in more Pathfinder 2E tutorials here, let me know in the comments!
Thanks for the video Jason, I bought the CRB in 2019 but shifted to 5E. Had I known this game was amazing as it is, I would have never gone to 5E. So I am currently watching your knights of the everflame campaign and I love how it ties Kassen into the PF1e adventure module crypt of the everflame. I genuinely loved that the mayor had changed due to all the problems 10 years ago and all the little drama. I'm loving the videos. And when will we see a knights of the everflame PDF? Would love to let my players experience everything. Cheers
I would definitely like a detailed explanation on feat gain, particularly ancestry feats and what happens if you don't meet the prereqs for them (ex: there's only one lvl 5 goblin ancestry feat and as it stands, I don't think this character qualifies for it).
Hadn't seen any videos from you in awhile, was worried you were gone. Glad to see you're still around, and hoping to see more live games with you GMing! (If you ever need a player for a game...)
So a reaction is basically sort of like a broad attack of opportunity category: attack of opportunity is one category of it and other classes etc might have different types of ‘reactions’ filling that slot?
@@JasonBulmahn No one said that Lord Von Leggysworth of Hopsvale, Second of His Name wasn’t magical. Ok. Maybe not magical. Just bioluminescent. Able to create as much light as a candle and change the color of the light at will. At higher levels they can create light as much as a lantern, a blinding burst of light once per day for every 5 levels with a radius of 5’ and eventually light as bright as daylight with a 30’ radius. Checking this out when coming from a 5e perspective, I love the sheer number of choices that are laid out, and done so in a way that is beneficial for understanding and lacking in pitfall choices. Being able to actually take feats, a lot of them, without sacrificing ability scores adds a lot of fun customization. The idea of adding character level to rolls as long as you're at least trained also helps stave off those moments where the dice just completely shut down the narrative due to a lower roll.
As a 40+ year D&D player and paid DM of 3 years, I'm so excited for Pathfinder, both for the system and the great people behind it who have proven to be true to this amazing community!
Well, I'm a D&D convert (since this whole WOTC is the worst debacle) and I have to say I like Dan already, my kind of people honestly. Great guide btw thank you very much. Got my core rules book and I'm looking forward to playing the first campaign with my 5 kids.....easily my favorite group. I told them we were quitting 5E and they got a bit upset. I showed them a bit of pathfinder and now they are super excited.
Great job! Families playing together sounds so awesome, I hope I could play with my kids when they get a bit older. WotC failed to realize how much they will lose by pissing off all the DMs of the world. No wonder the new online service looks to usurp DMs with an AI bot.
The great thing about the proficiency system is that there's really no 'wasted choice'. If you have a 10 Str and become trained in Athletics, you're just as good at someone with 16 Str without training. Soon, you'll be much better. It's one of my favourite aspects of 2e; training really makes a difference.
I tend to get overwhelmed by the breadth of choices, so 5e was nice for me in that regard. I'm glad I have this video to make character creation more digestible.
I’m too isolated to play anymore, but I may collect 2e APs because Paizo has always been the best at designing such adventures. I don’t have EVERY 1e AP, but most, and I love just reading through them to fuel my imagination.

Thanks for making this awesome video! I feel like I've been trying to make characters in the most difficult way possible(particularly since I like to use the Alternate Stat rolling option. Yeah, I'm old school). This made so much sense watching the video, I had to keep rewinding due to all the face-palming(Apparently my Int is 8). To you and everyone at Paizo, keep up the fantastic work!
2 big things among the noodly math stand out to me: Starting characters' health is higher, and Proficiency is added to armor, making it much less likely that starting parties will skip to level 3. Fantastic!
Another DnD5e refugee here... Picked up the Humble Bundle and am just ploughing my way through the core rule book, so this video was super helpful... Have to say, love how all the classes seem to have way more depth than you get in DnD. Have to finish my existing DnD campaign, but once that's shelved I will definitely be running a Pathfinder game.
Thank you for the walk-through! I've played Pathfinder for years but hadn't yet looked into 2e yet since my last groups were sticking with 1e or doing D&D 5e, and I'm glad it's still much more detail-creation-oriented than 5e was. Ty for posting this. I'm a 2nd time dm, first was a campaign on 5e. Thanks to the wotc debaucle I'm looking for a new system and pathfinder looks very fun. I'm excited to try a few one shots before we commit to a long campaign:)
Very helpful! More tutorials would be fantastic and one thing, in particular, that'd be great is a "What to do with your 'extra' action?" for the 3 action economy. A lot of new players seem to think "Well, I'll attack again, I guess..." but with the penalty that might not be the best thing for them to do. There's a lot of skill based actions: Feint, Grapple, Shove, Create a Diversion, Hide, Intimidate, Trip, Disarm, Demoralise, Recall Knowledge, or even the touched-upon Goblin Song! I'm sure there's a lot more and also you'll have some great tales where a player being more inventive than stride, strike, strike to spark new players imagination! 🙂
@@KalonOrdona2 Stride could well be the best use for that last action, to disengage and force the enemy to move, a lot of the time. It's going to depend on the fight but I think there's going to be a lot of different things you could do that'd have greater effect. As an example, say your party is up against an ogre and, for their level, it's a challenging fight for them. Sure, they can move in, hit, move back but the Will DC is 4 lower than it's AC and it's Reflex 7 points lower. That means that you could have a better chance to trip on you 3rd action as you did to hit it on your 2nd. Or you might decide to trip first "attack". With it being a much easier target number, maybe a crit is reasonable achievable to doing some damage with the fall. It's AC is 2 less (flat-footed) and that's for not only upcoming strike but also for any party members who can weigh in before the ogre goes again... and you may regain the attack you "lost" to using a trip with an attack of opportunity at your full bonus. So you're weighing up Stride, full bonus Strike, Trip (-5 due to MAP) then AOO full bonus Strike vs Stride, Trip (chance of 1d6 fall dam), effective -3 pen Strike, full bonus AOO). It's also a good target for demoralise. Demoralise doesn't count as an attack so, as a 3rd action, likely easier to succeed than an attack. That's a -1 to it's next round of checks (attacks and saves) and it's DCs. Maybe you have one frontline combatant is good at Intimidate and the other in Athletics so you combo it, intimidator up first making that crit fall even more likely for the one with good athletics. It's on the ground with a total -3 to it's swings, due to frightened/prone (-4 if you were lucky enough to crit demoralise), reduced saves, loosing an action to having to stand and potentially provoking, flat-footed for the rogue and overall a very unhappy ogre... Now, granted, I picked a monster with a weak will and reflex so move, hit, move may be your norm but I think a lot of new players won't know the possibilities from using skill based actions to effectively de-buff the monster rather than taking another swing or just stepping away. 🙂
Just want to say even though this might not be the right forum in which to say it but this would be a perfect time to get some more streams going such as Knights of everflame or something else with you GMing it!! Regardless love yalls stuff!
Excellent video showing how smooth and easy-to-follow the process is. And, it's also fun! Which is sorta the important part, right? Keep up the good work, NoNat's dad!
One of these days I'd love to play Pathfinder. I have the core rule book, but no group. I Love making characters, so I have spent a lot of time doing that.
I made my first character in 2e yesterday. Hes a Kobold draconic sorcerer who is a servant to a copper dragon that likes to hoard various items, texts, famous adventure's remains and things that people use or memories of adventures past. The Dragon has bestowed his gift on Mord's (His name is Mordant) bloodline to journey in seek of adventure to add to the dragons hoard. Whether that is his dead body, or treasures that he collects on his way. I have considered using as the bloodline black dragon, but I think copper should fit better with a parties alignments.
If you live in Hamilton or Middletown, Ohio. Or anywhere close. I also have players in Denver Colorado, I run games for both WoC and Piazio. But HasBro took my money. PIAZO and Lisa Stevens always says hi at GenCon.
I'm very glad Pathfinder leaned harder into feats while 5E backed off from them. Feats are the best! I think I would play a game where everything was feat-shopping!
@Jason Bulmahn thanks for your answer. I won't give up hope 😆. Thank you for your awesome work, loving pathfinder and knights of everflame was my entrance:)
Just started looking at PF. Noticed the numbers get very large very quickly. To the point it seems you can soon build a fighter that can only be hit with crits by low but die monsters, and all before the fighter gets to third level
Great start, Now if you could, teach me to make a starfinder character and ship cause maybe some of us Paizo recruits need a break from the pathfinder era. but still look forward to exploring it, maybe after checking out the first five levels of the future. =)
Would be great to have a more direct explanation from you w/o Dan or guest. I'm recruiting players old school AD&D/ Traveller players. They don't have patience for the joking around, but your explanations are awesome. 🎲🎲🎲
For context this is related to the Dungeon Dudes video. Let’s take back our game. Personally, for now I will take my d&d game on pathfinder with Paizo. I trust that right now they have my game at heart. You might not take your d&d at the same place you might even keep your d&d with the original game but we should push the tag #mydnd and say where we are taking our game. Wotc might have the right to the name but the game, the friends, the fun is not theirs
I've played a few modules between Starfinder and Pathfinder, as well as the Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous PC games, and in my experience there very much are right and wrong answers when building characters. I'm also quite good at finding the wrong answers, mostly, it seems, because I build characters that specialize in non-combat things, and non-combat things don't really help.
One of the great things about P2 is that we put all of your choices in specific "buckets" which helps to ensure you have an effective character. You dont have to choose between being good at skills or good at combat! You get to be good at both by picking Class feats and Skill feats!
@@JasonBulmahn That's kinda what gets me about the design. I feel like I should enjoy the character building more, except it feels so at odds with the way the published adventures play to me. The adventure paths I've experienced featured combat so demanding that it sent me doomscrolling through build guides that would tell me things like "Paladins should always use reach weapons, not sword and board." While any time it looked like we'd have to do research or investigation, there was an NPC to give us the answer for free and point us to the next thing to kill.
I was wondering if there was a standard array for stats? I'm able to build other game character in my head because I have a base line to work from and was looking but could not find any mention, then again I don't yet have the core book to flip thru, yet.
There is not, specifically, but you can assume that your total bonuses on ability scores will add up to +9 (usually this looks like a +4, +3, +1 +1 or +4, +2, +2, +1 or +4, +3, +2, +1, -1)
Yeah people joke often that Jason Bulmahn is his dad or a relative. But Jason has a bunch of gamemastering tips and tutorials which are system agnostic. Id recommend them to any GM from any game system. They are amazing.
So one of my current groups is wanting to switch systems as well from playing 5th edition. But I am honestly at a crossroad. The fact that it takes me an hour to create a character to play the game makes me not want to play. 15 min and i have a 5th edition character and im playing. I get why people enjoy the super customizable creating a character but its just too much for me. I just want to play.
But only only get to create your character once and then play them for x number of sessions. It’s not like most people are approached by a random GM on a street who’s like “pssst, kid! Yes, you! Wanna play some dnd? See you in 20 minutes at 25 Roleplay street, apartment 7”
@@dark_dar Guess im trying to understand your comment in regards to mine. I have nothing against anyone who plays these games because they like the over in depth character creation that goes with these games. Im both forever dm and player in a few groups. Its the fact that i like the simplfied or "dumbed down" version that 5th edition gives. For as I stated I would much rather be playing the game then worrying if my character can sneak through mud. Or has an ability that allows me to jump a little higher. Depending on the situation its an athletic or acrobatics check. Easy, simple and im playing. Thats one reason why im at a crossroad with my one group that i play in. So much time rules lawyering or pointless rp that a more in depth character driven game or different set of rules to nit pick through. Does not sound fun to me.
I can throw together a PF2 character in 5 minutes or less easily. It simply depends on how much of a concept you already have in your head beforehand and how familiar you are with the tools.
@alex burns Pathfinder 2e is more complex to get into than DnD5, that is true. The video here last 1 hour because Jason is explaining every single point, which does not need to happen with every player nor every time you create a character. I suggest you have a play with Pathbuilder or Wanderer's Guide, both are free websites with all the character options, available for free. Once you've created a couple of characters yourself you'll be able to explain it to your players much more easily. Then, have a session 0. Give each player a character sheet to fill, explain the process to every one at the same time, step by step. Have the Core rulebook in the middle for easy reference. Tell them to create their character on Pathbuilder at the same time so they don't miss a step. I found that doing it as a group encourage players collaborating and helping each other.
@@MathAenya I'm not against any other system or groups that play them at all. I have so much money invested into my 5th edition games and in spite of all the current dnd news, I rather enjoy the 5th edition system. I did just play a 3.5 game with another group and just found the character creation to be too much. Maybe one day but im just not currently interested in switching or trying something new.
I just can't find ANY games at all on roll20 and I have never really played PF 2 but 5e for years. I would also like to know why there are no charactermancers for creating PF 2e characters in roll20
pathfinder 2e players don't usually play on roll 20 (this is a generalization) They usually use foundry VTT, which has full pathfinder 2e integration (all rules, items, monsters, feats, etc) and automation. The best part is Foundry VTT is a single cost of 50$. No subscription. No monthly fees. You get everything. Forever. And can host for your entire group with your single purchase. I think there's a demo. Check our the Rules lawyer videos on it if you're interested.
I can't help but notice that every. single. time. a game publisher puts out a "how to make a character" video, they *NEVER* make a spellcaster, regardless of how spellcaster-heavy said game may be! Why? Do you think your own spellcasters are *too complicated?* /s

It's 2G and martial, but the dueling spear is finesse and versatile.
Thank you for the Video.
Any chance for knights of the everflame season 3😁 would be so awesome 👌
I would love to do another season, but alas, we have nothing planned right now.
nice, this is awesome
Would be great to have a more direct explanation from you w/o Dan or guest. I'm recruiting players old school AD&D/ Traveller players. They don't have patience for the joking around, but your explanations are awesome. 🎲🎲🎲
My party over 10 years killed Evil 😈 HobGoblin king. BUT IT WAS Cthulhu Monster. GOBLINS ARE THE GOOD IN MY WORLD.
Man when you said you needed some one else I was half praying you had Clippy of NS fame.
Wotc might have the right to the name but the game, the friends, the fun is not theirs
i was broken hearted that I couldn't make a rogue using a katana with the two handed feature for sneak attacking
Isn't a "Frog Hat" Just a Toad Stool? 🙂
To be fair...
Happy satisfied people don't tend to go adventuring. ;)
Conclusion: if you want to create a Pathfinder_2e character you call Dan.
You used voluntary flaws to give Dan's character a wisdom boost, is that a core rule?
Nice
As it happens I'm shopping to replace my 'main' fantasy RPG...
Reminds me of 4E. Where are the skills?
Played a goblin sorc and i named him Pus-Burn...
Nonat's older brother.
hahahaha
Yeah people joke often that Jason Bulmahn is his dad or a relative.
But Jason has a bunch of gamemastering tips and tutorials which are system agnostic. Id recommend them to any GM from any game system. They are amazing.
". . . and a Dragon ate my dog".
Players start in Goblins Town!!! At 4th
Can you please provide a link to the fillable character sheet you used in this video?
Not piazo training us dnd players 4days after wotc fucked up on the pr end
I just can't find ANY games at all on roll20 and I have never really played PF 2 but 5e for years. I would also like to know why there are no charactermancers for creating PF 2e characters in roll20
pathfinder 2e players don't usually play on roll 20 (this is a generalization)
They usually use foundry VTT, which has full pathfinder 2e integration (all rules, items, monsters, feats, etc) and automation.
The best part is Foundry VTT is a single cost of 50$. No subscription. No monthly fees. You get everything. Forever. And can host for your entire group with your single purchase.
I think there's a demo. Check our the Rules lawyer videos on it if you're interested.
@@zolgathor I have Foundry but finding games on the discord kind of blows
But if you want to use 5th there website!!!
I built a happy non edgelord rogue and my dm killed my family.
Game in Hamilton,Ohio
ah yes, what a great World of Warcraft video
I can't help but notice that every. single. time. a game publisher puts out a "how to make a character" video, they *NEVER* make a spellcaster, regardless of how spellcaster-heavy said game may be!
Why? Do you think your own spellcasters are *too complicated?* /s
Coming from 4E. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
