Hot damn, Freespace! Now there is an under-rated game that deserves a modern sequel.
Check out Freespace Open. It takes the source code from the original game and upgrades it to modern capabilities. The community has about 15 years worth of created content.
I'm not so sure about that, there's no guarantee whatever company owns the rights would do it justice.
The original developers have said they won’t do another game as they are afraid whatever they make won’t be as good.
The profile of the Orion class destroyer is so memorable! There's nothing like it anywhere else. Thanks for making this video. Keep Freespace alive!
It actually looks very similar to the Halcyon and Marathon Cruisers from Halo.

Wait ;) The Original Team behind Descent / Freespace make atm Overload. If it successful they make a second part and a Space Combat Sim.
emm "Remastered" is called Freespace 2 SCP (Source code project) and it is already remastered to epic heights.

I would actually prefer a Freespace 3. You can download a mod to update the graphics on Freespace 2 and 3.

Depending on the mod you play, there is already a "Freespace 3."

More Freespace vids please, just recently found your channel and after consuming *a lot* I was happy to find at least one freespace vid. Keep up the fantastic and passionate work!
You forgot to mention how two Orions were equpied with Meson bombs and were used to blow up two jump nodes in order to halt the Shivan assault at the end of the Second Shivan Incursion and lock them down in the Capella system.
The GTD Nerid and GTD Bastion, if memory serves ;)

I remember this class right from the opening vid of Freespace 2 (played the first only later).
Back then it made a huge impression on me, and even though FS2 depicted the class as outdated, it also was made clear that this was, for good reasons, once the peak of Terran battleship design.
I thought it was kinda dumb that the lore described it as so outdated, because it was FAR more powerful in reality than the Hecate.
@@sultanofsick Right, but the Hecate was build with other goals in mind.
Not as a replacement for the Orion.
The Hecate was more a carrier; can launch fighters and bombers with anti-fighter defence.

And if you look into the Freespace 2 Open Project, the Blue Planet mod continues on after the events of FS2. The GTD Carthage, an Orion-class Destroyer dating back to the Great-War, has been refitted as a Combat Evaluation Destroyer, with multiple technologies that only the newest GTVA designs may mount. The Carthage and her battlegroup, made up of FS2-era warships, consistently feature in the top-10 performance rankings by battlegroup, within the GTVA.
So the destroyer continues to live on. And even in Blue Planet, is a stupidly tough nut to crack.
how goes blue planet because i've only played to the point of i think the carthage's capture or destruction by the earth bound forces.

I believe the campaign is still at Chapter 3 released, 4 & 5 still WIP.
Please do more Freespace vids, the Fenris and Leviathan class cruisers deserve a video, with their incredibly long commission periods, aesthetic, and versatility

Though nothing in the second game can compare to the Lovecraftian Horror Story of the original game's plot, with the Shivans slowly being revealed as this mysterious horrifyingly powerful force from the depths of space. I don't think I've ever seen a video game antagonist introduced better than they were.

I love how this game is still available on Steam for ten bucks. I still have the old mod that turned this into Beyond The Red Line for Battlestar Galactica. Newtonion physics in a space combat game?? SWEET!
This video kind of deserves a remake, in my opinion. Not only the Orion got an absolutely beautiful model remake in recent Freespace Open versions, you could also include a bunch of interesting trivia from the community that spent the better part of two decades shooting at and getting shot by these bricks. Also there's plenty of gorgeous screenshots of the Orion in action.
Freespace deserves some more videos, too, as it has a bunch of curious designs, and the mod makers made a lot of really gorgeous ones too. Also there's a couple mods in the BSG, Wing Commander and Babylon 5 universes, with a large Star Wars one in the works too!

This took me by surprise, and in a good way. I LOVE Freespace! I would've included such iconic Orions as the Galatea and Bastion, but overall I am very impressed. Please, keep up the good work and, if you're ever in need of an idea for what to cover next, please consider the Star Wars E-Wing. It's most underused.

I'm not one for models, but I've said for years I'd pay good money for a replica of the Bastion on my shelf
you'll want the redone model from freespace open.
The one shown at 01:39 is the Auriga, the (non-canon) double hangar version of the Orion developed in Sol by the Earth Alliance. This is right from the Inferno fan-made project.
You can tell it's the Auriga also by looking at the other ship, an Earth Alliance Darkness-class corvette (which is non canon as well).
Auriga? The uber ship from Morgan Technologies, that appeared in the 'Derelict' campaign.

If I could reccomend one to be covered, I would choose the Basilisk War Droid fighter. used by the Mandalorians during the Mandalorian wars. I would be psyched out of my mind to see it featured!

I do love the apparent evolution of the GTVA's military hardware. In some ways, the Orion seems to pay homage to the battleship era. With the Hecate class being pretty terrible at dealing with things its own size, and the move towards newer, smaller vessels like the Deimos and Sobek taking up the role of capital ship hunters.
Well, that brings back memories " just 40000 meters go, incoming Seraphim waves of port, and Nephilim waves already opening up on on starboard, keep GTD bastion going to end target. Meson warhead is charging to close the sub space tunnel. No reinforcement is coming, as we are being overrun in all systems linking to Capella..Hold the line!" Yeah, a good game indeed!

I fucking love Freespace. Played the original in 1998, and played 2 sometime after. Modded the fuck out of them, Blue planet is one of the best games I have played, hands down.

Wanted to piggyback here to let people know about Freespace Open:
In 1999, after making Freespace 2, the company that made it (Volition) folded but released the source code. Since then, a very dedicated team of modders has built on it to bring it up to modern standards, along with porting over 15 years of fanmade content (including the original Freespace game)
Best of all, you can get Freespace 2 from www.gog.com/ (Good Old Games) for super cheap and download the upgrades right on top of it.
The engine is so robust it's also been the base for a lot of total conversion mods, using it for things like Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Homeworld, and even completely original universes and mods.
Well worth the $6 to buy the game.
