Thanks for an interesting and informative tour. I really enjoyed it.
I miss our little Scamp 13’, but we just needed something bigger, with a bathroom.
I might check into one of those 16’ ers.

It looks like the Safari Motor Coach Factory that I used to work in in the 90s I used to lay carpet and I was in the 3rd carpet Bay installations and they'd slide them sideway they put the wheels on dollies and they slide the whole RV sideways until I got the into the building and then it would drive out we had about an hour to do our work so we put quite a few a day

Thank you for the Tour, trying to see how a fiberglass trailer can still weigh more than what I was expecting. We do have cars with limited tow capacity and though it looks great but I may have to go in s different route.

I watch Elsa Rhae and her boyfriend Barron living in their Scamp. They minimized their trailer to be able to carry it to places that they get to camp for Free. They know of a lot of places to go to. My guyfriend lives down the road from someone who has abandoned a Scamp. I want to ask about it but he doesn't want to bother. My car isn't big enough to tow anything.
I like the places that you've been to. I've only watched a couple of vids. I've been to Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Mem. Rocky Mtn National Park, Devil's Tower, and Little Big Horn in one trip. But we flew out to Denver and rented a car and did that. My guyfriend lived in Denver a couple of times and he would fly me out to see him. We were pretty familiar with Colorado and a little of Wyoming. Enjoying your videos.

For the price that they charge I figure that they would be made a little better. I'm not a big fan of that 5/8" wooden floor that is exposed to the elements. If I had one the first thing I would do is seal everything underneath including the steel frame with Rhino coating.

Mine's up there right now. Jared in the shop is top-drawer. They're rehabbing the one I bought used, checking for safety and function. I bought it from a "do-it-yourselfer" and the crew is "undoing" some of that and re-doing it right. Well worth the 300+ mile trip up there.

It is. I've called them several times with questions and about half the time I get a guy named Kent who I think may be the plant manager. And every time I've called I get an immediate response, no annoying music or long periods of being on hold. And knowledgeable results. They sell parts over the phone as well. A small operation.
The Scamp itself is great. I've been camping in tents for years as well as having and pulling in the Rockies a pop-up and locally a Winnebago. The Scamp is the best. I can get into more remote areas (I'm referring to almost impassible roads/trails) with the pop-up because of the lower center of gravity but the Scamp does very well. Durable too.
I've had mine about 10 years and I the only thing I've had to do was have the inverter replaced (about $200 if I remember correctly). And tires and I just changed the battery. And I "buffed out" the gelcoat once.
One of the smartest things I've ever done was to buy the Scamp. Or the luckiest. A friend of mine talked me into doing it. I almost passed on it because it has an air conditioner and I knew I'd never use it. And I have not. And the price seemed high but ten years later I strongly suspect I could sell it for what I paid for it (if not more).

The biggest weak point of these fiberglass trailers is the seam between top and bottom and the plywood floor exposed the road. It's a shame they stopped making the entire shell fiberglass then installed plywood inside the shell.

  • @CombatDoc54

Scamp and Casita both need to upgrade their frames or undercoat them as the frames rust and I have seen 2 of them where people have bought used and the frames rust and break. Also, they need to weatherproof their door hinges as the screws, and yes, that's all they are is screws that hold the doors on to the hinges rust, fall out and next thing you know, you lose a door going down the highway. Don't take my word for it, look it up on RUclips, p[lenty of videos about it on both Scamp and Casita. Other than that, they are nice overpriced entry-level campers. Also, the first thing a first-time buyer should do is scrap the tires and buy some LT tires. Scamp and Casita both put the cheapest tires on they can find. They both really need to upgrade their axels and wheel bearings as well.

    * Can they build a generator into the scamp trailers?
    * It was nice to see the plant but it would be nice if they could put a video together that took you through the process step by step of how a trailer is built? Everything from the very first planning to the end in detail? How tall wide and long can they be and how light and heavy can they be? I know you did a quick walk through but it would be nice to see a step by step video? This was a cool video as well.

Some marine plywood on the floor would not increase the price too much, but would aid greatly in the longevity of the floor.

    •  4 года назад

Agreed. That low density chipboard flooring is the worst possible junk. Product is basically resin, wood chips, and sawdust that absorbs moisture, and will rot out in a few years. The fiberglass shell is equally cheap -- about as thick as your typical backyard hot tub. I laughed when they said it needed "to be reinforced" if a roof a/c unit was to be installed. And how much does that weigh? LOL

Our Scamp Life the frames should really be hot dip galvanised for rust resistance, particularly for salted roads. I agree that the floor isn’t really good spec, should be a marine grade ply. In regards to the insulation, it’s not bubble wrap, it’s actually rated stuff, they use it here in Australia as well, though most have styrofoam cores. Cute little campers though. And two layers of reflective for insulation. Should be called scam. Not scamp

@@fishyman4820 they're so small that they don't need much to keep 'em warm. Never had a problem staying warm in freezing conditions. There are much better built fiberglass trailers like the Oliver but you pay a lot for that quality and there is a significant weight gain. Scamps are light, inexpensive trailers that get weekend campers out their. If full time RVing is your thing an Oliver would be a much better fit.

@@mmcalifornia8600 even Oliver's are overpriced, and they directly lie in Thier video tour, calling two layers of reflective foil in a 1 inch air gap, r-16. R5-6 at most.
I have Nash Northwood manufacturing. It's 5-6 inches roof is r-18.
Your right scamps are good for weekend, and different applications.
      Oliver's are well built.
      Just not for me.

I love the concept of molded fg campers, specially light weight ones like what scamp is offering. But from this video, it does not appear scamp is a well run modern manufacturing facility. It seems like each worker works on one camper at a time in his or her corner of the shop. Also the tools and methods are not very specialized. Very different than what was shown in the Escape camper video.

I agree with what you say, but it seems to work and retooling would be expensive. The trailer business has its ups and downs of course. I suppose a year waiting list might justify retooling. Lots to consider. Perhaps the owner is close to retiring or selling the business and he doesn't want to change things at this point.

A lot of cheap material in these builds all in the name of profit. So much potential but $$$$. If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself...

I owned one and they are better made than the standard sheet mesa (metal ) panels with the wooden structure. The upgrade interior cabinets are quality made. The only reason I sold mine is because my family out grew it. Now that we are empty nesters I would love to have another one.
