  • Mount Aragats lies relatively close to Yerevan. The parking/lake lies at 3200m. The highest peak is at 4090m making it the highest mountain in Armenia. On our way towards the mountain we visited the Etchmiadzin Cathedral complex. It is the centre of Armenian Christianity. Following we really started driving up the mountain. The Amberd fortress and Vahramashen Church sit at 2300m. The mountain is the site of many scientific centres. We visited the Byurakan Obervatory and the founder’s house museum. It once was one of the USSR’s main astronomy centres. A visit to the Orgov Radio-optical telescope was next. We did a separate reel on that. We continued up the mountain until we arrived at the parking/lake. It lies right next to yet another scientific centre (FAST). We hiked to the viewpoint at the other side of the lake on the afternoon we arrived. We hope to hike to the Southern peak tomorrow. Of course we want to roam around the scientific centre also.
