The decision between the two should be based on what you need from the hardware... handeling, Built in EVF Vs removable, weather sealing, optional battery grips, built in intervalometer, improved 5 Axis stabilisation... theres a fist-full of small differences that no two people will prioritise the same way... there is no clear "better" camera in that decision. (and both are very good cameras).
I like this new Pen, but it's like they updated the OMD but in a Pen body, now whats next for the flagship OMD ? I hope Olympus puts a flip screen on it instead of this pull out screen, and I hope they improve the ISO, and up the video to compete with the Panasonic GH3, do you have any idea when it is going to come out, i'm thinking maybe Oct
It looks great, I always felt my E-P3 buttons felt more responsive to the OMD and assumed it was due to the weather sealing, which makes them a bit mushy on the OMD. I will be keen to handle an E-P5. I do miss the screw on grip though, strange they didn't go that way.
Yes it does... but it's so quiet I didn't even hear it until I was deep in an underground tunnel, under countless tons of rock, on an island, alone. So yeah... not really an issue.
So would it be easier to forgo getting something like an Eye-Fi card in favour of this camera? It seems like it'd be more economical and easier to use.
Based on this video, literally all your criticism (aside from the inconsequential flash release) was to do with software, which hopefully means it could all be fixed with firmware updates. That's exciting news.
Eleven years later I just bought and EP5 from Japan via Ebay, also a 40-150. I have a 50 year history with Olympus - an early OM1 then later a film Pen F which I loaned to a friend and he broke it. Then a variety of other Olympus DSLRs which arrived and left over time I presently have two Nikon bridge cameras which I see are quite valuable but not nearly such nice things to own and use as my past Olympus cams. I shall sell them as I haven't used them for over a year in favour of smartfone photography (sorry). I've been dissatisfied with smartfone photography lately and been longing to get back to Olympus while trying 4:3rds, so have plunged back into the Olympus pool. Can't wait for delivery. PS, being a Japanese version I'm hoping (rebellious me) that the 30 minute EU video clip limit won't be present as I'm reluctantly living in the EU. I hope I'm not arrested.
Good review of a very nice camera. People underestimate the importance of a well crafted body made of nice materials. But I would like to know if the wifi is usable with a normal computer like a ey-fi card?
Hey Blunty, how does the e-p5 stand up to the fuji x-e1? They're around the same price, are mirrorless, and have similar aesthetics, so it'd be interesting to compare them.
Only one question - do I get silver or black? And (ok 2 questions) do I get body only or with the 17mm lens and EVF? I've got Panasonic 14 and 20mm lenses at present (only). Love to get the black 75mm too but is the Panasonic 35-100 a better choice (third question there, sorry).
Damn, this is the first I've heard of that European tax thing for devices recording more than 30 minutes. What utter crap that is. Of course, not the manufacturer's fault, but it'd be nice if they had a way to get around it for people outside of the EU. Stil, great review, as always, and I look forward to the next parts.
Luckily with the Panasonic GH2 I have, there's firmware hacks that switch the recording time limit off but it's a pain the backside indeed. Stupid tax laws.
The body looks very nice, apart from the odd logo on the front. "OLYMPUS PEN" looks like it was stamped on a cheap Chinese knockoff. The original Olympus looks far better.
its fiftyfifty an artist with the worst camera in the world wont even be admitted to the cheapest competition, like a noob with the most expensive tool (well money commands... he might enter)
I have a Lumix GF1 and this camera is finally what I was looking for as a replacement!
Assuming my GF1 ever breaks lol.
Thanks a lot Blunty for your review of Pentax Q. I buy a Q yesterday, I'm very happy!
Indeed. Fingers crossed.
Your camera review videos are the best on youtube. Looking forward to your other EP5 videos.

I would love to see this put against the E-PL5.
That *IS* the "original" dude... google image search for "Olympus PEN F" the old film camera the design of the EP-5 was inspired by.
Great review! Very complete. Lokking forward to the follow up reviews. Especially the comparisson with the EP3.
I want the styling of the ep5, the rangefinderstyle viewfinder of the gx7, the weathersealing of the em5 and the video of the gh3.
I never thought of wanting the ep3 but I want this ep5

Great review. You touched on a lot of good points. Appreciate it.
Excellent and comprehensive review! Congratulations! Just found out your channel and I'm already a subscriber.
Did you not spot the pair of 30mm sigmas on the ep-3 & ep-5 in this very video? That's a hint ;)
which do you feel is better Nate, the OMD or the EP-5? i mainly do macro shot's so would love to know which you would pick.
thanks for the review blunty!!!
Nice Evangelions :) You're gonna have to make a video featuring all your mechas sometime!
The coupling with apps is amazing!

looks like the PEN F. very nice

Awesome review!
Great review. I'm not sure if I just missed it, but what material was used for the body? Are the top and bottom parts still made in plastic?

Is this going to be about the same price as the previous model?
Hey Blunty! Does the EP5 emit a soft hum like the EM5 from the 5-axis stablization?

Dammit, I'm salivating here. Looks like a really awesome piece of tech. I sooooo wanna dump my 550D and get a smaller and more versatile camera.
this little bugger seems fairly amazing!
Any prices rumoured yet?

Nice. Just keep them coming :)
Great reply Thanks Nate :)
How does it fare against the Om-d Em-5?
@blunty so is this the mirrorless to get!
Is the shutter noise a lot quieter than the ep3?
How can the wifi be via SD card? It's built into the camera.
whats up with all the alliusing if i spelled that right...... on the close up of the sensor
Great video as always but some vs one could be greater :)

For the same price or more of the em5. Just checked. 1000.00 no lens
Direct ad-hoc
The top part is made of plastic, on a chinese forum someone visited the factory showed the photo.
EVA Unit 02. Good choice. =D
omgosh no i want this so bad
Metal body.
I'm gonna have to say goodbye to my Pentax...
I hope it doesn't hold the em5 s price. Also. Hope the wifi is not via sd card
I NEED this camera. Just sayin'
The Olympic PEN-is quite a nice camera.
Potty humor.
