This video is the one that perfectly explains from A to Z everything about this brand. I never hold a Olympus camera, but I looking to buy some used. And find this video that perfectly explains what I need. Thank you so much!
I have a Pen-F… It’s great despite its slightly annoying four-way switch on the back. I’ve been using it for years and now I have and OMD em1 mk3, and very new and brilliant OMS5, the Pen-F is so lightweight, small and classy looking, it’s great for casual use, and as a body to my vintage Pentax lenses, and other more outre art lenses, and ultra-wide-angle stuff. It’s an absolute beauty, and attracts a lot of comments and interest from observers and enthusiasts.
My favourite is the Pen-F. So much that I bought a second one. Unfortunetaly, price is even raising lately since there is no follow-up model. I wish there was a 25MP version. For a long time, besides my full-frame equipment, I used my Pen-F for everything, mostly adapting old manual lenses. I added a cage for better grip and get more weight (imagine me throwing it around after a trip with my full-frame equipment, it weighs almost nothing ;-)). I rarely use the color profiles, but I bought it mostly for the sensor size and vintage looks. Thanks for the video!
I have never had any of the premium pens but I had Epm2, e-pl5, e-pl6 and e-pl7 and out of these I really loved e-pl7. It was more than enough - the thing that I missed on all previous ones was the control dial, which 7 has, WiFi was a nice extra. I miss this camera a lot if you can miss inanimate objects 😂
I missed my first E-P1 loads when I first sold it, object missing is real!😅 I also had an E-PL5 for a little while, sold it for the exact reason you mention.
I very much enjoyed your video comparison of the various Pen series cameras. I have been a loyal Olympus fan since the mid 1970s, and currently own four Olympus MFT cameras. There is one thing they all share in common. I own (not acquired in that order) an E-PL1, E-PM2, E-M10, and an E-M5 MkIII. They all take the BLS-5/50 battery. Both the Pen series cameras take an external viewfinder, of which I have two. I certainly do not need, but would love to acquire, an E-P3 in silver!
Thanks, that was great to have a walkthrough of the E-P line 🙂 I had the E-P1 years ago in 2012-13. I liked it but did not love it. I remember in 2013 I wanted the E-P5 but instead I got the GX7 instead, cheaper and with a built-in swivel EVF. I once owned an E-PL5, which I enjoyed, although it was not always easy to hold. The E-P line is better for ergonomics. When the E-P7 came out, I was tempted, but I found a great deal on the GX9, so I got that, more features including a swivelling EVF and cheaper 🙂
I've had a very similar journey, I did love the E-P1 (and still do) but when it came time to upgrade the GX7 offered a more compelling package than E-P5. I've since also got a GX9. I've managed to pick up an E-P5 along the way also. Of the four, the GX7 is the one I love the most, followed by E-P1. Performance wise, the GX9 is clearly superior to all the others.
Thanks for this great video. I am an mft shooter and sometimes have problem to find reviews about the pen series cameras. This is a very nice pen history and comparison. I tempted to get an ep5 although i have the em5 mark3 as a main camera and besides that i have an epl3 and 2 panasonic cameras ( gf1, gm5). My biggest love is the ibis, i can do up to 4 seconds sharp shots on my em5 with the pana 20mm f1.7.
The Lumix 20mm (not quite sure how I have a pair of them) is an old Leica design, great glass but the focus motors have limited capability, fine and accurate but slow, it will not AFC on a Lumix and will dither about in C-AF on an Ollie. I started with the E-PL1, then Lumix G5. The E-PL7 was a big jump up, it may even have the same sensor as the E-M5ii, same TruPic VII (as is PEN-F). I appear to have too many cameras. G9 for wildlife, E-PL7 to carry but I also use the E-M5ii and PEN-F, there's more resting.
I got a new EM5 Mk iii last year just before it was discontinued. I missed getting the awesome EM1 Mk iii new. The EM5iii seems very easy to use to me. I know it's polycarbonate but atill feels very good apart from the cheap on off switch. A worthy upgrade to the gorgeous EM10 Mark ii cameras, chrome or black (both of which had magnesium bodies) and are gorgeous for stills photography, especially with the smaller lenses.
@@davebellamy4867 Glad you like it. I'm largely using a used PEN-F in place of my E-M5ii. It does have a minimum shutter speed in A-mode which I find extremely useful. I do wish it had been given a tilt screen though as it is almost purely a stills camera. In terms of what it can do with still is is still very current and can do most of what my G9 can, except maybe action and wildlife (focus speed is slower).
Thank you for this presentation of the PEN series. Very useful. It helps figuring out which camera is worth getting on the second hand market. I like the PEN-F better. Funny, I realized it is very similar to the GX9. Same generation, same sensor size, same dimensions.
I watched this video yesterday and went out and picked up a E-P5 with a VF-3 & 4 today for $130! I feel like it was a pretty good deal. I'm looking forward to going out and having some fun with this little camera. :)
The EP1 was my first MFT camera that I purchased back in 2015. I still have it and use occasionally. Since then I have added several omd e series to the collection. A few weeks ago I won an EPL 1 on an auction site for an insanely cheap price, even this one can take an external EVF, so I cannot understand why Olympus/OM systems didn’t continue this option with the EP7, EPL9 & EPL10
I’m thinking perhaps they want a more clear distintction; OM1 is pro/wildlife, OM5 is semi-pro/video/trips and PEN is entry level, social media etc? Although the latter would suggest it’d be focussed at vloggers too, but eithout mic input that doesn’t seem to be the case🤷♂️
@@bartjanverhoef I have in my collection the EPL8 that I have paired with the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 which I find to be a perfect match for size, handling and image quality
The Pen-F all the way, especially after the firmware upgrade of 2020. I had to add a leather grip through, as the camera is too small and slippery to use comfortably. The grip also extend slightly the camera in height giving some space for the pinky finger. Feature wise, with the exception of 4K (but Pens are not made for that), it is still the most advanced Pen camera ever made. the only weak point to me is the rear thumb grip that degrades in time, but fortunately I was able to pick four spares for chips. Unfortunately the firmware was in such a poor state when the camera was released that the reviews were harsh and killed any market or the F. Olympus blamed the camera while they had only their own idiotic marketing department to blame for rushing out the camera before the software was ready; after the new firmware was released (4 years later!!!) the camera feels like a new product, to the same degree the EM1MkII was reborn. I don't like the cheap feel of the EP7, which has worse performances then the elder sibling and a worse battery.
@@bartjanverhoef MUCH improved autofocus, which was the Achilles heel of the Pen F compared to the EM5mkll when it was launched, and improved colour wheel function: you can now have 16 different custom modes, 1 for each well setting. This effectively allows you to bake whatever film simulation you want and store it, both in B&W amd colour. There are several sites that give you "recipes" to create Kodak, Fuji, Ilford and even Ferrania simulations. There are many other small changes in the menu that mirror those introduced with the EM1 mkll firmware. Video got some improvement in 1080p too. The Pen F is still my M43 main camera (with a GX9) today, as I did not feel compelled to upgrade further: I bought an X100v in 2020 but I got rid of that after 2 years, as I didn't see the point. It has noticeably better low light performances, but no IS which is a big limitation.
I started with an ep-1 when it launched. Found the lack of evf a problem out doors. I went through a few Panasonics and EM’s to get to my current em1.2, which is a great camera. Great review, very helpful. I’ll keep an eye on eBay for a bargain EP5, articulated screen or F with its evf.
I enjoyed watching this. I've accidentally managed to collect four Pen digitals. I bought the original E-P1 back in 2010 and while it's no longer my daily carry it's still one of my favorite cameras ever. Until pretty recently the prices on early M43 gear were ridiculously low, so over the years I also picked up an E-PL1, an E-P2, and an E-P3. The EPL1's point-and-shoot feel is fun in its own way. The E-P3 is definitely more refined and responsive. But I find happy familiarity keeps taking me back to the E-P1/E-P2. The resolution and speed are both still ok. Even with a manual focus lens it balances nicely and that big vertical thumb-wheel on the back works really well for me.
Nice summary, apart from the E-P2, E-P3 and the E-P7 I own all of these too. Some of them in multiple colors (white, black E-P5, silver, black Pen F). The Pen F is in a class of its own compared to the other Pen cameras. It's noteworthy that the E-P7 is not worth owning, especially how expensive it still is - unless you REALLY want 20MP in a Pen and you cannot afford the Pen F. The E-P5 is a better camera in every aspect. It has a better shutter, that goes to 1/8000s, it can sync flash at 1/320s for the built in flash and 1/250s for external flash. It has 5.5 stops IBIS compensation, it has a faster frame rate, it has the accessory port - it's BETTER than the E-P7 in about EVERY way when you put the specs of both cameras next to each other. Nobody is going to notice the difference between 16MP and 20MP, megapixels don't matter. When the E-P5 came out, it even was better than the OMD E-M5, including the external viewfinder which was much better than the built in viewfinder in the E-M5. Of all the Pen cameras, the E-P5 is the best one to get today in terms of quality for asking price - I just bought the white E-P5 (it's ****ing GORGEOUS) for USD200 on Ebay. The Pen F is essentially selling used for what the new retail price was when corrected for inflation, it's already a collector piece. With the JIP acquisition, Olympus cameras went down the drain. They basically maintain exactly one camera, a flagship targeted at the niche market of wildlife and outdoor photography, everything else they produce is watered down reruns of older, better models - same with the OM5 which is a light version of the E-M1 III. It's just sad.
The Pen-F is basically an OM-D in a Pen-sized body, so it makes sense that it stands on its own. I am somewhat anxious as to what Olympus will produce entirely under new management. "OM System Pen" doesn't roll off the tongue as nicely, but hopefully they do something that gives us hope for the future of their camera lines.
@@RyougiVector I am very curious what OM System will do with the PEN line in the future. Tbh, it wouldn’t surprise me if they will focus mostly on the OMD line as a niche product aimed at outdoor/wildlife shooters and maybe only do an E-PL style continuation of the PEN’s rather than a more premium offering in that area. But who knows, they might announce a PEN-F mark ii next week and I’d (happily) be totally wrong :).
@@bartjanverhoef if they figure out a way to make a Pen lineup with built-in EVFs, then as long as they can provide supply then I think they'd make a killing in the market. I'm thinking this would kind of take over both the E-M10 and the E-P lineup. Not sure if they'll do that, nor am I sure if they can keep up with demand if that were to happen
@@RyougiVector I have no idea what that market looks like exactly in terms of sales potential etc. But given the popularity of the fuji’s and other retro-ish rangefinder style camera’s I could definitely see a compact, good looking premium PEN with EVF and weather sealing doing well.
The E-P1 was my very first Olympus and MFT camera and the camera that made me fall in love with the format. I recently purchased a E-P3 simply because I miss that 12mp sensor. But I am thinking of picking up an E-P5 as well. Great video thank you for this!
"recently purchased a E-P3 simply because I miss that 12mp sensor." I purchased the E-PM1 for that 12 Mpix sensor, but mainly for just to get examples done that the newer and better 16 Mpix isn't required, as the 12 Mpix is more than good enough for the work. But I don't see reasons why to get the 12 Mpix for some nicer/better quality than what the 16 Mpix offers for colors, dynamic range, noise etc.
@@paristo oh no I miss it because it just reminds me a simpler time. I used to carry this camera and just had fun taking photos. It wasn't work yet. Not at the extent I do it now. I miss the sensor for the nostalgia not the better IQ. Because let's be honest. It's not better. Sure it is characteristic but that's just a nice way of saying that it's an IQ only a mother could love.
@@AlpacoFilms Okay, I thought I had missed something for the quality. I like the form of the body in E-PM2. A nice tiny pocketable body. Lens in one pocket, body in other, you don't even realize having it with you.
The colors out of the E-P1 and E-P2 are unique even among Olympus cameras. I have a hunch that it's a carry over from their DSLR days but I don't have any of their last DSLR models to check. The imatest results of imaging resource (RIP) are my only evidence so far.
The first 4/3 sensors were Kodak. I'm unsure when they switched to Panasonic. After Panasonic burnt their factory down they switched to being made by Sony, but if they're described as LMOS rather than CMOS then they're Panasonic design.
not long gone over to Olympus, have aquired EM 1 mk2, EM3 m2 (IR converted) and EP5 which i am gathering a set of small lenses for. Must admit i find the small camera the most fun to use.
I own en EP-5. Great camera! Have the 17mm 1.8 that almost never comes off. Great feature not mentioned is the touch screen, I choose focus points and shoot. Not sure if that was new with that model but it’s nice feature
The 17mm/1.8 is a great match for the smaller OMD bodies too, particularly the EM10s and EM5s. Mine is welded to my old EM10 Mk ii but can sometimes be glued to an EM5 Mk iii.😂
@@bartjanverhoefMicro 4/3 to me seems so underrated, like it's the perfect happy medium that gets overlooked. Live the content by the way. A friend shared your EPL5 sunrise walkabout. Great pictures.
Just purchased the Pen e-p7, rather than the F. These reasons : 1.All dials buttons can be used holding camera with one hand. 2.There is one dial compared to two on the f at front next to finger grip so my fingers have more space. 3. The screen is flip rather the twist type which is faster to use and more useful with street photography. 4. The body is smaller than the f. 5. I don't use a viewfinder so that is not an issue. So it comes down to ergonomics and specific individual preferences, which specs you can do without or which are essential to how you use your camera. And you can find mint SH online slightly cheaper than the f becouse the f is now becoming a collectors item. Finally the build quality is very good, all dials click and feel excellent. I won't be bashing it around, and its small size makes it less exposed than my OM-D mkiii when walking.
Well said, I’m totally with you. The E-P7 is my goto for street photography as well, for all of the reasons you mentioned. I’ve tried many cameras for this purpose including the PEN-F and various other bodies, both Olympus and other brands, but nothing quite beats such a lightweight, responsive camera with a flip screen and great I.S.
Great video and the only comparison I have seen of all PENs! I am the verge of bying a Pen 5 including EVF4 and a 17mm /2.8lens for ab 200 euros and wanted to check out some videos before I decided. Thanks for helping me with that decision. PS I have been using Nikons before but dont like the bulk so past 5 years its either been the great little Olympus XZ-1 or my phone.
I bought an EP-5 as my first step into Micro Four Thirds. It has a beautiful aesthetic look, that makes me want to pick it up all the time. And people stop me in the street all the time and ask me about my camera. No one believes it's almost 10 years old
Still a PEN-F fan. I've owned all the premium PENs, but currently hold on to just the F. My shooting style is generally aperture or shutter priority and the exposure compensation dial is a must for me to correct metering errors. I had that on my Fuji's as well, but I sold them and just have Olympus cameras now. I also have an E-M5 Mk III, E-M5 MK II, and an original E-M10 that I still like quite a bit. I prefer small bodies at this point for weight and size (I'm 68 and value lightweight carry, lol). Great video and I'm subscribing. I also own some original "Zuiko Digital" cameras: an E300 and E500. They are still very usable.
Thanks! I’m also a fan of the smaller bodies, although I do prefer my E-M1 mark iii when I use bigger lenses as it feels more balanced with it. But I very often use the the E-M5 iii or a PEN as well , it’s great having such a compact kit. I’ve always been very interested in the E-300 and other bodies from that period, do you still use them?
Thanks for your comparison. I’m an old Olympus fan going back to the late 1970’s. I wanted a used digital Pen body so I chose the E-P3 as it was the most affordable for me. I really love it, but sadly I discovered it suffers from the image stabilization failure of these cameras. It probably isn’t worth paying to have it fixed. So I’ll be in search of another body but will watch out for this.
I noticed that OMD does not sell any Pen cameras now, at least not on their websites. Maybe some day they'll come out with an OMD branded Pen, but I don't see any sign of that. They are pushing the Tough line instead. Every camera they sell now is weather sealed too. I don't think any of the pens were. Hang on to those Pens because they are now collector's items.
A PEN E-P7 and a Ricoh GRiiix is a great set up for some banging street photography sessions. I’ve noticed the PEN E-P7 seems to get a lot of hate from Americans in comments because it was never released there. You’ll have fun with it I think.
Even with a few of the ‘shortcomings’ of the E-P7, I am indeed enjoying it a lot! A very compact and lightweight camera far more capable than it may seem at first glance (and that a real advantage if you ask me). Also very curious about the Ricoh, I’ve never tried one so far, but there’s so much good stories about it!
@@bartjanverhoef The M.Zuiko 25mm (50mm equiv) 1.8 prime lens fits the E-P7 like a glove, it compliments the weight/size very well. Yes the GRiii is a pocket rocket, superb everyday carry in a jeans pocket.
Hi Bart-Jan, This is really useful. Thank you so much. A question: is video playback viewable in the VF4 viewfinder of the EP5? Thanks in advance for your help.
As someone who never have experience with Olympus, the ideal camera that I want amidst the premium PEN would be the E-P7. Newer processor for better auto-focus and write speed, very light, tilting LCD that is more convenient for waist shooting (my preferred style, nice for candid street photography), a teeny tiny bit better battery life, decent amount of physical controls, and of course it's drop dead gorgeous looks; sharper edges that are closer to the original analog Olympus PEN cameras (sorry E-P1 to 5 fans, the rounded shape is somewhat unappealing personally). Unfortunately the price is outrageous. I can find a used Fuji X-Pro with a larger sensor and weather seal at that price within my region. I think the E-P5 is the unanimous winner here for cost per value, but if we include the PEN Lite series I think I'd rather go with the E-P5's little brother, the E-PL6 announced in the same year. Significantly cheaper (nowadays) yet nearly the same performance, it's lighter and smaller but have a tad longer battery life, it's the last PEN Lite camera to support external EVF, once again a neat tilting LCD, and lastly it's utterly beautiful look in full black color with red copper accent. If ever get into the Micro Four Thirds ecosystem, I'll probably look for the E-P5 or the E-PL6/7/10; the full black ones kind of hide the softer edges and I like that.
Excellent video! Thank you. I have two E-PL models (1 & 2), one E-P Mini 1, and the Pen F. Needless to say the Pen F is my favorite. I would like to get the E-P7 but they didn't import them to the USA so I'll have to look overseas to find one. Not sure why I want the E-P7, I just do.😎
I'm sorry for necro-ing your comment section. My forst m43 camera was the E-PL3. I liked it a lot and it pushed me into micro four thirds as a whole. I came across this video as I have bought an E-PL7 to act as a companion camera for my E-M1 bodies (compact lens in a side pouch for times when I have the large telephoto on the E-M1 and want to snap something quickly). I thought that I would really want a Pen-F due to the built in viewfinder. I love the looks and I prefer a VF to a screen. However, watching this, I feel that the E-P5 would in fact be a better choice. It has also caused me to appreciate my Lumix GX-7 which I feel acts as an interesting alternative to the E-P5 - although the viewfinder can sometimes stick out a little too much when stored away, it's a lovely camera to use snd seems to be an interesting compromise between the E-P5 and the F.
I remember when my cousin first introduced me to M43 with his Panasonic GF2. I thought it was amazing with lens being smaller and overall systems just being cheaper. I decided to buy a brand new camera in college but ended up with a FujiFilm XA2. I regretted it because though the images were kind of cool, dreamy. I couldn't get the colours I wanted and Fuji...lens was EXPENSIVE. Years later around 2020 I decided to pick-up an EPL2 from lady with a 14-42 and a 75-100. I was lucky because the 14-42 kit was faster than the original E-PL1 and E-P1 ones. And I was finally able to create the colours I wanted. But ultimately, I moved onto a EM10 mk II, because of the Electronic View Finder. There were some E-P5 sitting here and there but they were just too expensive where I am from. The EM10 Mk II I have is a little beat up with some scratches on the body but overall it is built pretty well. I think it uses the same hardware as the EP-5 so I think I am going to stick with the EM10 for a while. (Though lately I wanna dive into older Four Thirds -> The E300, maybe I'll make a video one day haha. But I am no good photographer.)
Thank you for the video. If you're not using the compensation dial on the Pen-F, you're not using it correctly. Compensation is a prerequisite to getting correct exposure prior to taking the shot. Try it out and you'll see the difference.
Hi Jan, hoe gaat het? Really nice videos! How's the Olympus EP3? I am eyeing one in Marktplaats but the price keeps jumping. Is it really true that it has an OLED panel and the body is made majority out of metal like what I read from online reviews? Quality of Jpeg versus EP5?
It does indeed have an OLED (touch!) screens, the first in the series. It’s very close in build and appearance to the earlier e-p’s but definetely more advanced. I’m not much of a jpg shooter, I pretty much always shoot RAW. Took a look a Marktplaats and saw 2 just above €100, seems quite fair! (And one for almost 800 with 2 cheap lenses, not sure if thats gold plated or what but thats ridiculous😄).
That’s awesome! Does he like shooting with it? I gave my 8 year old daughter one of my E-P1’s and she comes out with me on a photowalk every now and then. A lot of fun to do together (and to see what they point their lens at)😊
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience in this video. Well done. Question: Do you have experience in using the Olympus four-thirds lenses with the P5 using the Olympus MMF adapter? Not ideal but if I acquire a Pen series camera it will take some time to migrate to a full set of micro lenses.
I have the E-P5 with the attached OVF, and, with a Pro Grade Lens it does a good job if you just want to go out and shoot some cityscape photos. I would recommend getting an Olympus Lens to go with them over a Panasonic because you do get sharper images. If I could have, I would have purchased the PEN-F, but, the E-P5 is a Classic. The E-P7 is hard to find and the price would also be up there. I have never come across one on KEH for sale and that is where I normally want my used gear to come from. My E-P5 was purchased new. I bought a E-M5 Mark III, which arrived yesterday, and the sharpness over my E-M1 is out of this world with a Panasonic Lens.
I really enjoyed using the ep-1 and ep-3 but now own the lumix g9 . The ep-7 looks great I like the pen-f but two expensive even second hand with the g9 I use the 12 mm f2. The 17mm f1.8 and the kamlan 50mm
Hi, I bought an Olympus Pen F secondhand, it has a cracked screen and a missing thumb grip, I wonder if I can buy new parts from a supplier, kindest regards John Moore
EP-5 probably is the best balance. It has EVF port and two dials. Unfortunately EP-7 does not have these :( So I still have EPL-6 with EVF as my small travel camera. With 14-42, 40-150 and 9mm F8
I see the ep5 prices are going up. I have a pen f. I like it better than the ‘em 1 mk2. Ep 5 with the ev finder strikes a chord with me dice I’m an old film camera user. I still use my OM 1 a lot.
The Pen F has a bit more of the layout of the mirrorless SLR like OMD cameras. Gorgeous thing though. All lovely cameras along with the OMD series. For photography and cost (not video), the EM10 Mark ii is a no brainer. Tiny, beautiful, metal and lovely finish. The left hand side on / off switch on the EM10 ii comes from the original Olympus OM1 SLR in 1972. I quite like the switch on the left hand side but that's just me. It means I don't switchbit on or off accidentally with my porķy sausage fingers.
Yeah that held me back as well. No built-in viewfinder was to be expected I guess, but why there is no port for an external EVF is beyond me. I have enjoyed shooting it so far though, it’s certainly not a bad camera (even though it has it perks - I’ve shared a few in a recent video about it).
I have owned EP1 EP5 and PenF. PenF is the best and closest to EM5 class without the bumped EVF. Beautiful but somehow still something missing. I will feel sad if OM won’t have another PenF. But maybe the time for Olympus is gone soon. Now it’s Fuji’s world. Now I don’t see many young photography enthusiasts talking about Oly, mostly Sony, GR and Fuji. I’ll say Olympus’ hold too much to its legacy. The design is complicated, chaotic and messy, chasing for more and more details. Maybe OM1 line still makes sense for sports and birds.
Very curious where OM System will take the PEN series too. It would be sad to see that go, but like you said, a lot of competition and the positioning of that line-up isn’t nearly as clear as for the OM lines atm.
The E-P2 black finish is simply an overlay on top of the silver panels from the E-P1. In some countries you could also get the E-P2 in silver, just like the E-P1, but with a brown grip rather than black.
Which pen would you recommend for me if i plan on selling prints of little plants? I use vintage lenses so stabilization is nice. Evf attatchment for when its bright outside. Idc about low light quality i have a mini tripod light i can shine on my subjects. I figured pen is a perfect hiking companian. I hunt for rate flowers and mushrooms to photograph.
The latest PEN, the E-P7 would be out of scope if an EVF is a requirement (it is otherwise a very capable, lightweight camera). Depending on your budget, I’d probably go with a PEN-F or an E-P5. The PEN-F obviously has all the bells and whistles, built-in EVF and all. It is more expensive though, and from what I gather an E-P5 with an external VF-4 for example would do just fine! Anywhere where we can see your plant photography by the way? I’d love to see what you do with vintage lenses!
It's a shame you don't mention the brilliant and very capable little Olympus E-PM2. I have one of these and it is almost my perfect pocket camera. It's the exact same size as my Ricoh GRD4 (and probably the GRIII also). I wish OM-SYSTEM/Olympus would keep making these tiny cameras. I keep erring over getting an E-P7 because unlike the E-PM2, the E-P7 has an electronic shutter making it extremely quiet and unobtrusive to use. But if you don't mind the sound of a mechanical shutter, the E-PM2 has it all. Paired with my DJILeica 15mm 1.7, the E-PM2 is a Ricoh GR killer and for a fraction of the price.
Definetely interested in trying that camera. I do own an E-PM1 but to be honest I haven’t really fallen in love with it. It’s mostly the lack of manual controls for me I guess, I really do like easily controlling aperture and shutterspeed. However, that mechanical shutter sound is one of a kind, I do love that about it. Curious as to how you shoot your E-PM2; auto mode, aperture prio?
@@bartjanverhoef I shoot in manual mostly. Sometimes in aperture priority. I guess the shutter sound wouldn't bother you as much as from what I've seen of your images, they are mostly landscape or of wildlife. I was drawn to you because of your E-P7 review, but I don't think you really sold the camera by taking an E-M1 out with it at the same time. Also, I haven't found adjusting the manual controls to be that much of a problem as like with any camera, you get used to working with limited functionality after working with the camera for long enough. Reaching for exposure compensation or to change the aperture/shutter just comes now as second nature.
@@bartjanverhoef I should've added, that the E-PM1 is not an E-PM2! They are quite different. I'll probably look for an E-PL10 next. I think that'll be a perfect replacement for a Ricoh GR (and my E-PM2), the former which is becoming increasingly overpriced. I mainly do street photography, and I've been using an EM-1 mk2 for that, but that's my main camera and I don't want to get it nicked, and the E-PM2 is too loud!! 😂
I love the PM2 too, a red one. It's a gem to fall in love with. And my god, I use it mostly with the 8-25 mm pro lens. I know it sounds crazy, but I can't stop living the combo. I wish OM System will release a PM3, preferably called PEN-M3 or just PEN-M. I want it to have new smart phone like touch screen interface and proper dials in a smart combo. And I want it to be the smallest MFT camera ever. Not too few, and not to many functions, but EVF connector back, and live composition. And good AF. Could our Olympus God please forgive us for our wrong doings and give us this one together with the return of the PEN-F and PEN-L series?
I have the EM5II and a brand new pen F on the way. The reason im not buying the newer ones is because of the plastic construction. I shot photos not videos.
@@bartjanverhoef I really wonder if OM Systems is dedicated to building this kind of quality. I think all of these cameras will all be collectors items soon. Surely, I won’t be parting with any of mine!
The PEN-F is just crying out for the tilt screen, the flip screen is for video and it is really not a video camera. Tilt screen is great for waist level, I do use the compensation dial, a lot. Then Olympus shot themselves in the foot (they have a habit of doing this) by deleting the AP2 port. The E-PL7 and its facelift E-PL8 were the last to have the AP2, which is not just for the EVF. After which they cheapened and dumbed down the Pen-Lite range and the E-P7 has followed suit. Certainly from the E-PL7 onwards (I don't know the E-P5) the image quality can be every bit as good as the latest mft models. The latest 20Mp have slightly better noise and DR but you would have to pixel-peep. The PEN-F 20Mp sensor is unique to it, backlit, and still as good as the latest offerings, E-M1iii, OM-1 and Lumix G9. The E-PL7 was sibling to the E-M10ii and both borrowed from the E-M5ii which was sibling to the PEN-F. The PEN-F is probably more complicated than an E-M1 but does have the cool feature of minimum shutter speed, and is probably the only Olympus that can reproduce the violet colour of a bluebell out of the box.
I actually like that fully articulating screen for photography, I like how it completely folds back with the screen protected when you don’t use it, but also being able to use it tilted in portrait mode, which I use quite a bit for low to the ground detail/macro close ups for example. Really depends on the use I guess.
Bart, I need some help. I’ve finally found a VF-4 for my E-P5, but it was used. I didn’t get the cover that I see you replacing on yours, after removing it from the camera. Can you tell me if this cover is available anywhere, or if something else fits it? Thank You!
Not sure if you can buy those. I bought mine 2nd hand as well, but it came with it. What I do with another EVF is put it in one of those small flash pouches that come with some Olympus cameras.
All of these are soooo close. Like, a pen f, but with a tilt instead of a swivel screen? A ep7, but with an attachment for a viewfinder? The ep5, but with electronic shutter? It's always something with this pen series. It's like rock, paper, scissors. You can have electronic shutter, viewfinder and tiltscreen, but only ever 2/3. Never all 3/3.
Hi Sir! Please, could you tell me if the Olympus PEN EP7 is compatible with the Olympus Mini Flash LM3?! Thank you indeed! PS : I do think this new camera is a best have for a beginner!! It's absolutely sweet!!! D.
Bart, do you know if these cameras have capacitors or internal batteries to hold the settings? I have to reset the date/time every time I change the battery on some of the older Pen cameras. If it’s internal battery, do we have to worry about leakage? Any idea?
@@bartjanverhoef Hi Bart, most people seem to think they are lithium batteries (not Li-ion), but they are not prone to leakage. I have been looking for a Parts Camera, that I can tear down to learn more about it. Surprisingly, there is little interest in repairing or restoring the older Olympus cameras, despite their high cost on the used market. I think we are among the fortunate ones, to have saved some of the finer examples. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks!
I had a EP-7 for a while before i got my Pen F. I really liked the controls and the ergonomics, and the color profiles first introduced in the Pen F were just amazing. But i was really bummed about the build quality. Its a plastic construction and built okay but a big step down from the E-P5 and no where near the F
It does feel more plasticy/cheap than it should. Which is a shame, because it is a really good camera. I also like the controls and color profile, and just the overall quality and performance. These days its mostly my street photography camera and it is really superb for that. If an E-P8 ever comes out, the only thing I’d ask for is that the exterior *feels* a bit more premium, like its predecessors. Well that and a mic input.
I have no inside info, but I think OM System did say they would continue the PEN line so I think we might see more coming in the future. No idea if that’s more in the E-PL line or more premium (Pen-F II?).
Nice comparison of the E-P series. I love my E-P5 but the control wheels have become irratic - the settings keep jumping at random. And IBIS failure on E-P3 so I use it with IBIS off. Otherwise the E-P series are great compact shooters. Just wished the quality control was better.
I wonder why the VF-4 name was OK but not E-P4 - strange that the viewfinder names more or less matched until then (VF-1 with E-P1, VF-2 with E-P2, VF-3 with E-P3).
I have the Olympus PEN E-PM2 smallest PEN camera also it does not have IBIS but it does have software Image stabilization but it's not as good as IBIS. I also use a few of the Lite Pens 1,2 and 5.
I used the E-P7 for about 5 months, but I had to send it back due to a defective IBIS system. The headline feature of the E-P7 is that it is the lightest DSLM camera capable of 4k video with IBIS and full-sensor readout unlike anything from Panasonic (GX800/850/880). Had they put a mic jack, it would have financed their future for many years IMO. In the end, Olympus couldn't replace my E-P7 and they sent me a E-M5 iii instead. I still miss the E-P7 though... I never really use EVFs anyway and the flip-out screen takes too much time.
Totally agree with your mic jack remark. I really don’t get why that wasn’t included in the E-P7. Als for the E-M5 mark iii screen, I actually like it. I use my E-M5 mark iii for these youtube video. Should I use the E-P7 and put it on a tripod, the flip down screen becomes unusable. Flipping it to the site (or top, there’s not gonna be a mic or evf on there anyway…😊) seems to have been more practical. Well, at least for how I’d use it.
my favorite pen is e-m10iv(pun intended) i have used pen f digital and if pen is king of weight. m10iv check those marks and pixel counts and screen. i feel like m10 or m5 is more fun to "carry around" than gx9 or pen f. yet this video pop up because i was looking at pl9 and pl10 today.
I remember when WHITE body Olympus or Sony cameras seem to sell big in the Middle East and Japan. Not an American or Canadian color choice. The Pen F has the same electronic “guts” of an OM-D dslr camera which sold for about $300 less.
There is no E-P6; Olympus went from the E-P5 to the E-P7 (because of a connotation issue with how E-P6 is pronounced in some places, or so I read somewhere).
They removed the EVF because it would make it an OM-D. They even removed the USB Port for external EVF because technically you would again come too close to an OM-D. If you get an ep7 with 20MP Sensor and can add a viewfinder to it, why would you buy the OMD for much higher Price? Many people would Save the Money is what Olympus thought. The light pen Series ups to EPL8 has the USB Port too. EPL 9 and 10? Never Seen that Option again. They never ever again let an EP or EPL getting too close to their OMD line up. They sold the external EVFs and realized OMG we are selling cheap PENs which our customers turn into OMDs
I think we can all agree that the Olympus PEN15 is the best one
Its definitely the most... compact 😢
Ahah
No, because it only has one knob.
Aha 1337 joke. P3N12
No 😂
Hi Bart.
My first camera was a Pen F half frame with a 40mm f1.4 lens in 1975. It was a great intro to photography.
Enjoy the rest of your day.
This video is the one that perfectly explains from A to Z everything about this brand. I never hold a Olympus camera, but I looking to buy some used. And find this video that perfectly explains what I need. Thank you so much!
Thank Stela! Hope you find a good one and enjoy it!
@@bartjanverhoef Found the ep3. Looking to buy it now.
Love my E-P5, but if a Pen-F popped up at anything close to a bargain, I'd have to have it.
My thoughts exactly.either of these two are the best option in my opinion.
Thanks for the video!
same here. i even used it for bird photography and probed very capable.
Great rundown of the series. Would love to see what you think of the EP-7 after you've had more experience with it!
E-P5! Because of accessories port, tiltscreen, on-button on right and lever for dual dial use! And also for its looks ....
For the used prices .. omd 1
It's a tool, who cares about looks it's not jewelry ffs
@@unbroken1010this comment must’ve really struck a nerve that you felt the need to come back 2 months later
I just ordered E-P2 with Lumix 14mm f2.5. There is some magic with the colors of this body, very film like with the proper adjustments.
This is one awesome video! Really enjoyed watching - thanks!
@@davebellamy4867none of the E-M10 cameras have magnesium bodies. They are a plastic chassis with thin "metallic sheath" coverings.
Wow that sounds like a really good deal indeed! You’d easily pay that for just one of those two vf. Well done:). Hope you enjoy it!
I believe i could never be tired of the PEN-F. But actually, I use the PEN-PM2 mostly. And my OM-1.
The PEN-F is to precious to destroy.
What were the prominent improvements in the 2020 software update?
I just bought an EP-5 :) Can't wait to get it in my hands
The E-P1 was my very first Olympus and MFT camera and the camera that made me fall in love with the format. I recently purchased a E-P3 simply because I miss that 12mp sensor. But I am thinking of picking up an E-P5 as well. Great video thank you for this!
What are the real world differences with a 16mp Olympus sensor?
"recently purchased a E-P3 simply because I miss that 12mp sensor."
I purchased the E-PM1 for that 12 Mpix sensor, but mainly for just to get examples done that the newer and better 16 Mpix isn't required, as the 12 Mpix is more than good enough for the work.
How can you destinguish which model houses which sensor - apart from the yp1 and p2 you described?
not long gone over to Olympus, have aquired EM 1 mk2, EM3 m2 (IR converted) and EP5 which i am gathering a set of small lenses for. Must admit i find the small camera the most fun to use.
Great comparison of all the Olympus digital Pen cameras. I hope they keep making them. Thanks for sharing.
I really like the PEN F, it has everything the photographers wish list. It is still expensive for a used one today. Can’t find anything below $700.😊
Thank you for this video! It's tremendously helpful.
Great video man! I might just have to pick one of these up and have a little fun with it.
Bought a used E-PL1, where is that in the lineup? Nice little camera. Thanks.
Just what I was looking for, great video comparisons! Thank you
Very welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
I own en EP-5. Great camera! Have the 17mm 1.8 that almost never comes off. Great feature not mentioned is the touch screen, I choose focus points and shoot. Not sure if that was new with that model but it’s nice feature
The E-P3 was the first with a touch screen in the series. I do love using that to set focus points as well on these cameras.
That was a wonderful video presentation. Thank you so much. 😊
I really wish the E-P5 had an exposure compensation dial on top.
I collect the the first of every series. But i also have the E-P5 and its a beautiful piece of camera
Great video. Because of this I purchased the ep3 also because it was cheap
I always wanted a second hand EP5, but heard that the control wheels don’t last long.
I don’t like the screen quality on e-pl10. Does the e-p7 has a better screen quality?
I don’t have an E-PL10 myself so can’t compare (not sure how the specs compare). No issues with the E-P7 screen though, it’s quite good imo.
have you compared epl series too?
Thank you for the video. If you're not using the compensation dial on the Pen-F, you're not using it correctly. Compensation is a prerequisite to getting correct exposure prior to taking the shot. Try it out and you'll see the difference.
I only have the ep5, but I love it. Quality camera and I def recommend it.
The E-P3 body is made mostly out of plastic, with very thin sheets of metal over top, just like the E-P1 and E-P2.
Love my F's, Ep's, & EpL's.
I got a good deal on an E-P3 for my 8 year old son, and as a backup to my OMD. It's a great camera
What about the E-P6?
Thank you Bart. Does the EP5 take a viewfinder on the hot shoe and what is it called thanks.
It does, the vf that came out alongside it is the Olympus VF-4 (but others will work as well).
I wanted a Pen-F because of the view finder, but then I found a great E-P5 for €200, and I am happy with that.
Opinion on E-PM models?
Hi, I bought an Olympus Pen F secondhand, it has a cracked screen and a missing thumb grip, I wonder if I can buy new parts from a supplier, kindest regards John Moore
EP-5 probably is the best balance. It has EVF port and two dials. Unfortunately EP-7 does not have these :(
So I still have EPL-6 with EVF as my small travel camera.
That ep-7 has tempted me many times. But no viewfinder
Yeah that held me back as well. No built-in viewfinder was to be expected I guess, but why there is no port for an external EVF is beyond me. I have enjoyed shooting it so far though, it’s certainly not a bad camera (even though it has it perks - I’ve shared a few in a recent video about it).
Very good work. Thanks a lot.
Correction - The nifty shiny black finish you have on the E-P2 is unique to that model. The black version of the E-P3 is a flat black.
Yes you’re right. The E-P2 has a very unique type of black. I wonder why that finish was only used for the E-P2, it’s beautiful!
From what I understand, it scratched up too easily.
Nice little comparison.. considering the price omd 1 mark 1 is a sleeper.
The E-P5 Viewfinder is the VF-4?
It’s not limited to the VF-4, but that was the one that came out alongside it (and the best external viewfinder in that range).
@@bartjanverhoef I really wonder if OM Systems is dedicated to building this kind of quality. I think all of these cameras will all be collectors items soon. Surely, I won’t be parting with any of mine!
I use an EP-5 with a VF-2 evf. Works perfectly fine.
Thinking to buy a EP 5 but in RUclips couldn't find good reviews . Hope you will do it ;)
I’ve been taking out my e-p5 a lot lately, will do an individual review of it soon!:)
Never all 3/3.
sweet video!! keep em coming
I only have E PL7 from the digital pens, enjoyable to shoot, but I prefer the Lumix ones. I also have a several film half pens, which I also shoot.
Any idea?
Hi Joe, I think they have capacitors but I’m not totally sure. I’ve had that same issue with a PEN I had. Did you try a Google search on this?
@@bartjanverhoef Hi Bart, most people seem to think they are lithium batteries (not Li-ion), but they are not prone to leakage. I have been looking for a Parts Camera, that I can tear down to learn more about it. Surprisingly, there is little interest in repairing or restoring the older Olympus cameras, despite their high cost on the used market. I think we are among the fortunate ones, to have saved some of the finer examples. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks!
@@joeprete7424is correct, it's a lithium battery that won't leak, not a capacitor.
Bargain on the purchase of the p7. Do you know if OM will release a new pen ?
I have no inside info, but I think OM System did say they would continue the PEN line so I think we might see more coming in the future. No idea if that’s more in the E-PL line or more premium (Pen-F II?).
Great overview!
Nice comparison of the E-P series. I love my E-P5 but the control wheels have become irratic - the settings keep jumping at random. And IBIS failure on E-P3 so I use it with IBIS off. Otherwise the E-P series are great compact shooters. Just wished the quality control was better.
Ouch! Both had a lot of use? Or just bad luck?
I wonder why the VF-4 name was OK but not E-P4 - strange that the viewfinder names more or less matched until then (VF-1 with E-P1, VF-2 with E-P2, VF-3 with E-P3).
Good question. I have no idea. Perhaps less of an issue for a accessory than a camera? I’d be interested to know too.
I have the Olympus PEN E-PM2 smallest PEN camera also it does not have IBIS but it does have software Image stabilization but it's not as good as IBIS.
I also use a few of the Lite Pens 1,2 and 5.
The E-PM2 does have IBIS. All of the Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras do, except for the Air A01.
Is this correct ?
@@bartjanverhoef You can always attach the tripod to the E-P7's hotshoe instead. Filp the video in post.
@@imagenatura I might try that, thanks for the tip!
What was wrong with the IBIS?

excellent video.
Ouch, …Press the release, before attempting to remove the VF-4!
Mooi overzicht!
I remember when WHITE body Olympus or Sony cameras seem to sell big in the Middle East and Japan.
Not an American or Canadian color choice.
The Pen F has the same electronic “guts” of an OM-D dslr camera which sold for about $300 less.
The ep 6? No opinion?
E-P5 heeft het kloekste sluitergeluid en is een echte fotografen-camera.
