Awesome teaser for us m4/3 lusters. The choice between this E-P5 and the OM-D isn't primarily about style for me. It's the fact that with the E-P5, you always have the option of sticking it in your jacket pocket; whereas the OM-D's non-removable v.f. lump makes it _just_ beyond jacket pockets. For me, pocketability is the difference between bringing it along most of the time, versus leaving it and missing those pic opportunities that sneak up on us in daily life.
Eeek! Not so at all! The IQ is just as good, and in fact, I much prefer the OM-D to any Fuji. Ive done MANY comparisons, updates and it's a fact. Those who say it is not has no clue. The Olympus has much better lenses available, is much faster, built better, has better controls, better LCD, more features, MUCH better video and IQ that is the equal up to ISO 6400. That is a fact, though some will never accept it.
It's interesting to compare with the EM5 since they have the same sensor and stabilization. Two features for comparison that you didn't mention are the WiFi integration and the base ISO of 100, both of which are appealing to me. If only it had an EVF in the corner like you mention, I'd sell my EM5 and buy two. I'd much rather keep the flash rather than EVF as a hotshoe accessory, and the styling and compactness without the EVF hump would be incredibly welcome.
Sure it is, I have seen images more amazing with a PEN or OM-D than any Leica or Sony or Fuji. The PEN E-P5 and OM-D are MORE than capable and I know pros who use them. It's all in the lenses and who is using them.
Pen P5 over OMD-5 a bit lighter and bigger buttons - so for bright light days carry viewfinder in pocket if needed. I think now the Panasonic GX7 will be the top choice for M43. Similar styling as Pen-P5 and nice grip and IQ said to be just as good but has built in tilt-able viewfinder in-body IS and lots lots more. I have the OMD-5 and it is super nice so not an easy call. Look forward for your review of GX7 Steve. IQ super nice in Pen-P5, no wonder it has a Sony sensor :)
Thanks for making this. It was helpful. Personally, I do think the silver version of the E-P5 looks nicer, as it reminds me of one of my first cameras, the Canon AE-1. Also, you did compare it against the OM-D E-M5 quite a bit so I wish you had one next to it to get a better side-by-side comparison.
Good review. I am now ordering the Panasonic GX7, more buttons, 9 Fn and 5 actual Fn buttons and has a viewfinder plus it tilts. I do have the OMD-5 and it is nice but heavy and hump annoying but IQ very nice if it was not for the GX7 would go for the PenP5 as new OM-1 just to large. Hard to fault the P5 other than lack of Fn buttons and C1 C2 C3 controls - P5 looks really nice in silver but Panasonic GX7 wins out - I have the GX1 and love the controls
Seems that the more shallow DOF and the Fujifilm colors (Olympus images are a bit warm for my taste) is why images from the X cameras look so good. High ISO images are extremely clean from all Fujifilm cameras. This is plain to see on the DPR RAW comparison tool. m43 has been at it longer so they have more nice primes. For zooms, the two f/2.8 Panasonic zooms are good, but f/2.8 in m43 is not great and they are expensive. The Fujifilm 18-55 f/2.8-4 is superb.
Will you be doing a Panasonic GX7 review? Would like to see review as new NEX8 on the way so big question which to get. Have NEX5n and NEX7, nice IQ but hate the menu system and button layout. Willing to sacrifice a little bit in IQ for a faster focus and all the many features the GX7 offers over NEX7. So I am hoping Sony will revamp their menu and button layout, more Fn etc.Jut have a feeling NEX8 will have the same menu but added APPS and wifi and few other things so GX7 more attractive
Aldo, thanks for recommending nikkor lens. I will have a look. But I would probably now go for something lower and budget. I am considering bower 7.5mm fish eye lens. With that wide it's easy for video manual focus isn't it.
What about the confusingly similar named Pen ELP5, doesn't that have the same sensor and cost about half the price, seems to me that is the pick of the range at the moment?
But it is not optical like the 1DX. Its huge but still electronic. Using it I prefer the Sony EVF for the RX1 and RX100II but this one is really nicely made. Just big inside and out :)
So Steve said he would buy E-P5 over E-M5. I personally think that E-P5 price is just bit too much. Also,,,, why couldn't OM-D have FocusPeak, darn it!!
Which lens would you recommend for video shooting? I am using e-p3 it doesn't have focus peaking. I have the panny 20mm lens and I find it not easy to shoot video with it in manual focus mode.
Hi Des! I had the same issue.. and I gotta tell you: Go with vintage Nikkor Lenses! You just can't beat the quality and beauty! All you need to do is buy an adaptor. You will not regret it. Actually you will not want to use the new lenses anymore. Cheers from Italy
Why the hate on Fuji ;). I own a X-E1 and would never trade it for a m43 camera. The X-Trans sensor is sooooo good and i,m sure would kill any m43 sensor. The E-P5 is a better camera but i reallllly doubt it comes anywhere near the X-Trans IQ. Though i use manual glass and having a 1.6x crop is so mutch better then 2x.
I think some people have just clung on to the 'Fuji has better IQ' rope to justify the terrible AF and other shortcomings of the X line. The amazing IBIS in itself is enough to put the EP5/EM5 over the Xpro1/X100s.
Most of the Nikon lenses are "weather resistant" with the rubber gasket at the bayonet. My 70-300mm VR has been saturated with slush while photographing a skiing competition, froze, and kept going. Right now Olympus only has 3 weather sealed lenses, the 12-50mm, the 12-40mm Pro, and the 60mm 2.8 Macro. So if you want to use any of the other lenses in the M43 lineup the weather sealing is pretty much useless. I would rather have the 1/8000s shutter speed and the bigger better EVF personally.
rant as far as style- 25mm 1.4 is the best lens to get for general use but it ruins the size and style of the pen. the 20mm 1.7 isnt as useful at the 25mm and the 17mm just seems worse than the 20mm as far as iq. The 12mm is only affordable in silver which looks strange on the black (which I would prefer)
The E-P5 doesn't have the 5 axis it doesn't have weather sealed body and not the same video capture. the E-P5 has 30fps and the E-M5 has 60fps. come on man do your research before you miss-lead 50000 people. and please go over the info again i watched your video and your wrong about the many things. or should i flag it?
Oh my god your totally correct im sorry I have been searching for cameras and all the sites like dp review don't mention it and the ones that do say 3 axis but Olympus's own website says yes. Thanks getting back to me for that

I've watched a thousand vids on EPs. your menu guide was spot on. the penny has just dropped. thank you

I really like the shutter sound, and the WIFI !!! great overview. Really like the video. Thank you.

The Ricoh GR makes micro four thirds an after thought-at least it did for me anyway after seriously considering the GH3 or EP5
The OM-D has a smaller viewfinder with only 1.4mp. The new VF-4 finder is way bigger, bigger than the 1DX in fact.
It features currently the best image stabilization on the market which comes from the om-d & is slightly improved.
Thanks for making this. It was helpful. Personally, I do think the silver version of the E-P5 looks nicer, as it reminds me of one of my first cameras, the Canon AE-1.

Thanks and LOVE everything except the lack of IBIS during video and 60p, or at least 24p AVCHD.
Would like to see head to head with GX7
Steve I love your new video intro design. It is sorta futuristic-fantastic. Reminds me of Mega Man on Nintendo.
Good review. I am now ordering the Panasonic GX7, more buttons, 9 Fn and 5 actual Fn buttons and has a viewfinder plus it tilts. Yay, i just got it!

Nice save Steve ;-) ! Keep the Oly reviews coming.

great review, many thanks. can you use canon EF glass with this camera using an adapter or will the aperture not work? ;-)
In Sweden sells E-P5 with 17mm 1.8 & 40-150 along with VF-4 for 10990 skr.
What about the confusingly similar named Pen ELP5, doesn't that have the same sensor and cost about half the price, seems to me that is the pick of the range at the moment?
You forgot to mention the touch enabled super control panel
Lenses, focusing speed, size, build, IBS?
Steve Huff Olympus EM5ii or EP5?Plz help me out!I do both stills and vids
In 10:26 , what are you holding when you are taking shots?
Its a microphone and audio recorder, also known as a digital audio recorder.
Pepingco thank you
Is there any possibility to use High Speed Sync flashes with this E-P5?
The 1/8000th shutter just asks for it :D
But it is not optical like the 1DX. Its huge but still electronic. Using it I prefer the Sony EVF for the RX1 and RX100II but this one is really nicely made. Just big inside and out :)
OM-D E-M5 has some great sound quality when recording videos. It it as good on the E-P5?
can you tilt the flash? does it have time lapse? does the stabilization works in video mode?
So Steve said he would buy E-P5 over E-M5.
I personally think that E-P5 price is just bit too much.
Also,,,, why couldn't OM-D have FocusPeak, darn it!!
should i get this or OMD EM 10? which is better in terms of image quality?
Which lens would you recommend for video shooting? I am using e-p3 it doesn't have focus peaking. I have the panny 20mm lens and I find it not easy to shoot video with it in manual focus mode.

how do you turn off the focus beep for silent shooting?
Does it have a hot shoe thing like on a dslr?
Yes
1:50 - does anyone keep the EVF on the camera in their bag?
Why the hate on Fuji ;). I own a X-E1 and would never trade it for a m43 camera. The X-Trans sensor is sooooo good and i,m sure would kill any m43 sensor. not camera related but is Mio any good? thinking of buying a couple for when im on the road and dont wanna drink water.
Made in Japan or?
I think some people have just clung on to the 'Fuji has better IQ' rope to justify the terrible AF and other shortcomings of the X line. The amazing IBIS in itself is enough to put the EP5/EM5 over the Xpro1/X100s.
@i get smart, I'm in same dilemma now,
OMD = weather sealed. Pretty no-brainer.
same with Canon, Nikon, and Sony ... but they DO exist.
pinkeye00 Not same, all Canon L zoom lenses are weather sealed, and more than half the L primes are too.
Most of the Nikon lenses are "weather resistant" with the rubber gasket at the bayonet. My 70-300mm VR has been saturated with slush while photographing a skiing competition, froze, and kept going. why would one buy this when we can get a Sony nex system for much lesser price point?
Oops add, I ditched dslr equip, and am torn between the oly and the gx7? Help
the iq really seems so much worse than the fujis. this is just a much more fun camera to use
rant as far as style- 25mm 1.4 is the best lens to get for general use but it ruins the size and style of the pen. the 20mm 1.7 isnt as useful at the 25mm and the 17mm just seems worse than the 20mm as far as iq. 1k dot lcd? (4:54) well thats not much :P
Best in Pen grade is not good enough!

it has 5 axis stabilization according to the manufacturer , duh , did you design it?&You are the one stating fake facts
