When I selected a project car for my channel, I selected the 2014 Chevy Caprice PPV (kind of like the 14-17 SS Sedan in the interior and suspension). Thanks for showing some of the benefits of owning a Caprice PPV!
For Australian police cars, the iconic one is the "Pursuit Special V8 Interceptor" made famous in the Mad Max films. The first car shown in the 1979 Mad Max film with the title of Pursuit Special is a 1972 HQ Holden Monaro V8 coupe stolen by Nightrider (played by Vince Gil), an escaped cop killer, who dies in an accident that destroys the vehicle. The more famous Pursuit Special is a heavily modified Ford Falcon XB GT, that started out as a standard white 351 cu in (5.8 L) Australian built 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT Hardtop when in 1976, filmmakers Byron Kennedy and George Miller began preproduction on Mad Max. The main modifications are the black paint scheme, roof and boot spoilers, wheel arch flares, and front nose cone and air-dam designed by Arcadipane (marketed as the "Concorde" style). Also, eight individual exhaust side pipes were added (only two of them being functional, others appeared to be working because of the vibrations the first two created). The most famous feature of the car is a Weiand 6-71 supercharger protruding through the bonnet. The impressive looking supercharger, in reality, was nonfunctional; functional superchargers are typically driven constantly by the engine and cannot be switched on and off, as portrayed in the first two Mad Max films. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pursuit_Special
@@theicksta Id argue that because we only got Small block Windsor and Clevo to 351, the big block stuff like the FE engines in Galaxies and F series trucks we just didnt get. We just had less to work with so the 351 got a lot of development for racing and endurance. For me the 1979 XD Falcon Interceptor (351 Cleveland, Twin rail Toploader 4 speed aka Borg Warner 0506, 9 inch and 4 wheel disc brakes) was probably the most affordable fun back in the day and I had 2 and a handful of the 6 cyl versions as well but I also had some earlier versions from 1971/1972 which were fun but I went back to Chrysler. Making the 351 breathe was the key and some head variations with way bigger valves helped that but unlike today importing US Speed parts from say Summit Racing wasnt widely done (I did though :-) What you guys dont realise is that you have a massive range of speed parts WAY way cheaper than we did at the time and do today. Probably why I buy from Rockauto/Summit/FCP/Pelican and have for decades.
@@ianrawlings2546 umm yes it is bud the body was made here in Australia and originally named the monaro the vt monaro and vx monaro for that body shape
I followed this build on Alex's channel, loved it , but if it was mine I'd get rid of the cop stuff on it and go 1 solid color and flow with the grandpa's grocery getter theme.Honestly that might make it better than a corvette.
The underhood dimples are for heat transfer. Keeps from needing to have an insulating material sheet on the hood, helps dissapate heat from engine bay with more surface area.
Holden caprice - damn nice car. Such a shame GM in their infinite (lack) of wisdom shut down Australian manufacturing :( I have a VS Calais (1995) which we have owned since almost new. Just a few minor issues to fix (power steering rack has a minor leak) a part from that it is a solid car. Have to lock it away now so the hoons don't try to steal it. Talking about an empty engine bay, I should post a picture of the V6 Calais engine bay, there is enough room to have a party in there. (car is almost air cooled there is that much room). (the car came in V6 and V8 options and the bay is of course the same size for both)
Having checked out the Caprice PPV a couple of times I find 2 things everybody talks about. One is the power of the LS under the hood which like you found out is a perfect match with the handling of the car. And Two is the sky high cost of parts when something breaks on it since like you said EVERYTHING comes from Australia. You can't just run to your local parts store and ask for parts for an LS since it is in fact an Aussie built L77. On another note my own cop car is why Im watching your channel. Im still trying to learn everything I can about the 3.6l LFX which you where working on saving in the Camaro.
Man I did an Internship for a company that interacts heaps with (or used to..) with GM/Holden here in Melbourne, Australia. I got to visit their test track and there was so much wasted potential there after manufacturing shut down here 5 or so years ago. Now It's owned by Vietnam's Vinfast. Not a bad thing, just a shame to see the end of an era.
I've got a black and white retired Wichita Crown Vic and I want to race now. The police ppv is definitely a bucket list car and you're absolutely correct when you say they are a bit more expensive than the Crown Vic. That being said, the Crown Vics isn't that much of a slouch and it's still pretty much Bulletproof.
Hey JR I absolutely love this. I am from Australia and have 2 v6 and v8 caprice and a statesman. The Australian Holden models are absolutely luxury. The v8 is so much fun.
Really happy to see you colaborate! Two really great guys, with good mechanical knowledge, that make excellent videos we love to watch. Will be waiting on more videos. Cheers.
Really like this upload. I have a 2019 Hellcat Redeye and a 2001 Crown Vic P-71 unmarked cop car I paid $1400 for. It has a spotlight and push bumper, no siren or emergency lights. I put more miles on the Vic than my Hellcat Redeye. It’s fun, until you get behind someone. I have passed more people in the Crown Vic than my Hellcat. People just want to drive 5mph below the speed limit in front of you, even though most Crown Vics have been retired. Tell the owner most factory radio antennas have simply been unplugged by the guys installing the police radio equipment, I was able to plug in the factory antenna at zero dollars. Same with the front speakers.
I have owned my 2011 Caprice PPV for 7 years now and still love it to this date, great sleeper LS sedan. Mine only has 52k miles with DOD delete, stage II cam, CircleD stall, Kooks headers and pipes, VRM intake, and other mods. Many people think it is like the Impala, FWD and slow.... Far from it. As for what you all said in the video, I understand not everyone is super knowledge about these, so no worry there. They were from 2011 to 2017 as 2017 is when Holden went away. All that cop stuff is not factory, the spotlight is though a factory option, not all Caprices have them. The radio is not a My Link of any sorts, it is just AM/FM/CD/MP3 and that is it, nothing else is enabled. Does not have the NAV board in it, so that cannot be enabled, but it can be programmed to add USB support, Bluetooth (phone and music playback), rear backup camera, AV in (See my channel - Caprice PPV Radio White). The overhead console does not have a mic, so that needs to be added. The rear doors are aftermarket panels, along with the plastic seat, factory has normal door panels and seats. The GPS on dash is also not factory, likely for the computer and video system that was removed. Yeah OnStar was deleted, no need for it, saved GM money. Anyway, you need to get one, but look for one that was not patrol and used as maybe Admin or State Patrol where it may of had only one officer assigned to it. Most of these city cars are beat up bad and end up costing a lot to fix them. The Crown Vic is a much stronger abuse car, but they are slow compared to the LS cars.
Seeing the window switches jammed in the door got a wtf out of me... it's the same one from the Holden VE cars, but it's normally in the center console.
The auto headlights are usually disabled in police cars. You don’t always want your lights to turn on automatically while patrolling. The 2012 Tahoe PPV I used to drive came with the automatic lights disabled.
JR the G8 is basically the same car. I have a 2009 G8 GT, Cammed, Holden HSV Wing, Steering Wheel, Gauges, Badges, and yes, people can never figure out what it is. Epic cars! Straya!
The antenna on the dash is more than likely a GPS antenna for MOVE.....that’s the program (developed by CAPS) the laptops we used for working wrecks, writing tickets and do incident/offense reports to give exact location on the reports/tickets. It could have also been for the radar unit. Looks more like the one for MOVE though.
RIP Holden. We'll help the legacy live on. Just got a '13 earlier this week! An exhaust like that will be the shiZnit. Went from a Versa to one of these puppies. WooooO! Peace.
Father briefly had a white Crown Vic LX, not even the police interceptor, that thing was so annoying to drive because of the way people around you acted when they saw you coming, slowing to 5-10mph under the limit when you're behind them.
Looking back on this video 9 months after I first saw it that I test rode the Harley Livewire and agree with you. Freaking amazing riding that and above what I expected and I heard they will change to just a Livewire and drop the price $9000 next model year. Also John Ross, you need to ride the new Pan America it is so much fun to ride, Harley did it right with this bike. I was not expecting it to handle and ride so well with a first model for Harley in this style, but they nailed it. Make sure it is the Special with the ride control, worth the extra money.
I've got an 06 Police Impala. It's fun, but it's only the V6 version. Parts are pretty fairly priced though. And it's got the column shifter. The Police Caprice on the other hand is not one I'd want to own. Because the parts come all the way from Australia, they are very expensive. Most of what it needs you can't get at a typical auto supply store aside from the basics. Bulbs, oil, brakes, ETC.
In honor of the Legit Street Cars and Watch JR Goes joint I am going to drink the cold Bartle Skeets and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
Antenna in the back is Cell, GPS, 2.4 and 5.8ghz wifi -- newer models have options for LMR (2-way) and there is MIMO on the cellular antenna setups and wifi
The weird backside of the trunk is used to mount gear or LED lights. If the PPV was configured as unmarked you could pop the trunk and have flashers up there to divert traffic after pulling someone over
i have plans on getting one of these cars since its got pretty much the G8 front look thats mennising i aready have a V8 G8 and absolutly love that 4 door camaro lol family car but got power the aussies got the mussel car rite a car thqt you and your buddies can enjoy without having to mess with 2 doors only i like the caprice as well but its not available in canada so gotta go south to get the full size beast and its getting a full on sleeper build (buying a full black one) cant wait to get my hands on it lol
Of course you have lots of fun in the PPV... it’s because here in Australia 🇦🇺 we know how to build fun cars.. all Aussie cars must be able to drop a fat skid straight from the factory
Cop cars don't spend a lot of time in high speed pursuit or jumping curbs or going into fields. They mostly just fire up and run all day, idling just as much as they drive.
A few things worth noting about the Aussie Caprice which is actually a long wheel base luxury version of the Holden Commodore, First and most importantly the Chev engine in RHD cars is modified, Oil pump, Starter and a few other bits and pieces because with the steering on the right the US engines didnt fit. Yes Flex Fuel is handy there but E85 is not widely available outside Queensland although E10 is. Yes there were performance variants of the Caprice but they were generally built by other companies, not GM-H. 2017 was when the last Caprice was available. Holdens death was due to many things despite the hundreds of millions in bail out funding from the Federal Govt but the final decision came from GM. Ford Cop cars and Ford Australia Falcons model BA/BF and the FG were not Flex fuel from factory and still made a good 50% of Police cars in Oz. They can easily be converted to run E85.
Hey JR, Love your channel and what you do with cars, been watching your channel since you popped up on Hoovies Garage one day. I had to comment on this video because I'm from Australia and I own 2 variants of these cars that you never got in the USA and I love them and wrench on them myself regularly. I have the 2012 Calais V Sportwagon which was the best looking of the entire model range and I also Have the SSV Ute, Both L77 LS engines, I've tickled the exhaust on my sportwagon a little but not crazy as being a wagon it resonates inside the cabin. As you say they drive so well and everything just works and feels just right. Holden spent 1 Billion designing that platform and it shows. Being a life long Holden & GM fan I was devastated when GM killed the Holden brand but the crap they were importing and putting Holden badges on was just garbage so to me once they stopped making these in AU the brand was dead. You definitely need to get yourself a Caprice PPV and Sticker it up as the JRGo PD or Neighbourhood Watch JRGo!!!! If you get one I will follow and comment closely as I would love to see what mods you can do to them in the USA that we cant get here. I might even do some video footage of both of my babies and you can use it in your channel if you get a Caprice. Keep up the awesome work and I will as you say Like, Share, Subscribe and do what you wanna do!!!!
I learned something today! I saw an Illinois State Police car and was confused, I was like that's not a Malibu, there's no way Illinois sprung for an SS, what other car does Chevy make that is that big? Didn't realize that they made a new generation after the giant boat of the 1990s. They didnt, Holden did 😅
Great car. Its like a present day Black Sheep Caprice. I dont really like Chevys, but I wanted one of those new Caprices. Too bad I can get 2 good CVPIs like you said for the price. Thanks for sharing the drive and walk-around. Always watch your videos (except the Copart one, I was jealous. Lol).
The V8 supercars as raced in Australia use E85 ethanol fuel, while the road going versions were able to run on it from about 2009 to 2014, when it was dropped.
rear antenna is digital radio system. roof antenna still standing is the am fm antenna, the one no longer is a analog one usually for talk around channels or other departments. data usually is the myfi cards in the mdts or a external one. those are celluar based. ive been in a few grays ones............ legally lol.
It's got a cop motor a 370 cubic inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It was a model made for flex fuel so it'll run good on ethenal gas. What do you say, is it the new bluesmobile or what?
The GPS antenna was either from the MDT (Mobile Data Terminal) or an in car camera system. EDIT> It was from the camera system. The ball mounts on the passenger headliner are camera and monitor mounts.

My first car is was a 1997 Holden VS police car. 11 months old from the Government Auctions. Boy it was fun.
They thought let’s build a cop car that can keep up with the people speeding
same with the lt1 caprice in the 90s 😉
Missed opportunity to do a blues brothers skit.
Dude, you do realize what you've got there right? Ever seen the movie "The Blues Brothers?" You just drove a modern-day Blues Brothers Cruiser. 😂😂
His hotel is in Rosemont,IL not too far from Mount Prospect
Cool 😀
@@brainwells6634 Oh right. That's where the Bluesmobile is from. It's a decommissioned Mount Prospect police car. haha, how cool.
A little better than a ‘74 Monaco.
I hate Illinois Nazi's.
BD 529
My das had a Pontiac G8 that was starting to have front suspension issues (they all do) and bought a Caprice, moving from one Holden to another Holden
You can actually swap a lot of interior G8 parts into a Caprice to get it to “stock”
You are better off getting Holden statesman or Caprice interior from Australia...
Alex is such a consummate professional and JR is pretty much a professional shadetree 😅~ so excited for this collab!
"If i need to smoke that curb." Hey JR i get it we've all been there lol.
The weird backside of the trunk is used to mount gear or LED lights. If the PPV was configured as unmarked you could pop the trunk and have flashers up there to divert traffic after pulling someone over
That thing is nasty loud. I love it. Boy my neighbors would be pissed if I owned something like that.
DO IT
i have plans on getting one of these cars since its got pretty much the G8 front look thats mennising i aready have a V8 G8 and absolutly love that 4 door camaro lol family car but got power the aussies got the mussel car rite a car thqt you and your buddies can enjoy without having to mess with 2 doors only i like the caprice as well but its not available in canada so gotta go south to get the full size beast and its getting a full on sleeper build (buying a full black one) cant wait to get my hands on it lol
Fasterproms has one with a manual transmission and about 1000 hp .... wish general motors would have sold more of these and the SS of that era .....
Does it wheelie
Had a great time at your meetup tonight! So fun meeting you guys
Hi from Australia!!
Still expecting that meeting between Samcracc and JR. It's gonna be awesome!!
I learned something today! I saw an Illinois State Police car and was confused, I was like that's not a Malibu, there's no way Illinois sprung for an SS, what other car does Chevy make that is that big? Didn't realize that they made a new generation after the giant boat of the 1990s. They didnt, Holden did 😅
Same info system as my Holden Commodore Berlina
Lol).
That square puck on the dash is for the gps portion of the in-car camera system that was in it.
The V8 supercars as raced in Australia use E85 ethanol fuel, while the road going versions were able to run on it from about 2009 to 2014, when it was dropped.
its a BEAST
Hey saw you at Chicago auto pros last night!
rear antenna is digital radio system. roof antenna still standing is the am fm antenna, the one no longer is a analog one usually for talk around channels or other departments. data usually is the myfi cards in the mdts or a external one. those are celluar based. ive been in a few grays ones............ legally lol.
Good to meet you at the meet and greet in Lombard IL, wish you lots of success,
JR would love a HSV SS lighter short wheelbase monster with all the nice shit inside
It's got a cop motor a 370 cubic inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It was a model made for flex fuel so it'll run good on ethenal gas. What do you say, is it the new bluesmobile or what?
13:35 don't be a jerk and return your friend's car on empty after borrowing it. 😂
The GPS antenna was either from the MDT (Mobile Data Terminal) or an in car camera system.
EDIT> It was from the camera system. The ball mounts on the passenger headliner are camera and monitor mounts.
Id love to have a old Town car cop car. That caprice is nuts wow sounds amazing with the exhaust and the cam
What's the difference 2012 ppv 9c1 and the 9c3?
2017 was the last year for Caprices. Pontiac G8, Caprice, Chevy SS = Holden
LS2 bottom end, LS3 top end
Mount on the windshield is for the dash camera system.
Fasterproms has a cool one.
11:22 was that the real 5-0 you drive past 🤔
In Kuwait we have a 2015 caprice with 20 K miles
Is there a way to check how many engine hours(ex. how long it was idling) were run on his car?
Welp, I have another cop car to add to my collection. LOVE cop cars and plan to own every one ever built from around 2000 on.
My crown vic the antenna don't work right with something pluggedinto the extra high amp 12 v outlet
Rest In Peace Holden.
I have had the vz crewman witch is the model before the ve witch is what that is it’s a 4 door 5 seater 2wd mini ute with a ls and manual she rips
It's a Holden Commodore, the Chevy SS was the same
That cold start was amazing!!!
I use to buy police cars at state auctions and have fun with them. I use to go through tires like water. So fun spooking people coming up behind them.
