ABOUT THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Produced and directed by Robert Wise, and starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, with Richard Haydn and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical of the same name, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film's screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman, adapted from the stage musical's book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children. After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith.
The film was released on March 2, 1965 in the United States, initially as a limited roadshow theatrical release. Although critical response to the film was widely mixed, the film was a major commercial success, becoming the number one box office movie after four weeks, and the highest-grossing film of 1965. By November 1966, The Sound of Music had become the highest-grossing film of all-time-surpassing Gone with the Wind-and held that distinction for five years. The film was just as popular throughout the world, breaking previous box-office records in twenty-nine countries. Following an initial theatrical release that lasted four and a half years, and two successful re-releases, the film sold 283 million admissions worldwide and earned a total worldwide gross of $286,000,000.
The Sound of Music received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical. In 1998, the American Film Institute (AFI) listed The Sound of Music as the fifty-fifth greatest American movie of all time, and the fourth greatest movie musical. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

My mother was one of the ladies in this scene. They hired singers who could say a few lines. She was the short one with the round wire glasses. She absolutely loved doing this. They worked for six weeks total. She took a lot of ribbing about My mother, the nun. RIP Mom, I miss you so much!
I love this! Thanks for sharing, and I’m glad you get to have this immortalized scene to remember her by! ♥️
Thanks for sharing
Oh wow! What an accomplishment!
Thanks for sharing Diana - I've loved this since my mother took me to the Cinema in the mid 60s to see it in Dublin, Ireland.
I got ribbed too - haha
What a wonderful treasure to memorialize your mother forever. She still lives in your heart . Thank you .
"How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?"
Enjoy it while it's there,
remember it fondly when it's gone.
LifeLikeSage thanks for this 😅
The nuns needed to see this
Precisely. Bob Dylan referenced this beautifully in "Buckets of Rain" from Blood on the Tracks.
Aww❤
We all have our calling.
That's the moral from this singing.
She was not a 'problem' with the Captain and his children.
The first diss track in history
The fire still burns to this very day
Yeah Yeah ugh
classic diss track! LOL ur comment underrated
Hilarious 😆
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"She's always late for EVERYTHING! Except for every meal." We used to sing this every time my sister came late to breakfast or dinner. xD

Brilliant Marie.
but maria was on time for the meals and late for everything else
So cute😆😆😆🌺🌸🌼
Villain origin stories 🥲🥲🥲
1:27 "How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand". So lovely sung! So perfect! Best moment!!!
The fact that they sang this at her wedding had me DEAD
Same😭😭
Cause marriage was how it was solved
But still funny haha
cool cooldude wow I didn’t think of it that way how deep
Kittykatsarecuties123 glad I could help
The fact that they called her a clown on her wedding day
This isn't her wedding day -- it's the beginning of the movie.
@@stevevasta but The song is reused for the wedding
@@stevevasta it’s in the reprise
The shade. The shade of it all
@Lara Perez Nope. That’s a poor interpretation, lacking in nuance.
"She's always late for everything, except for every meal" - my family talking about me
Legit 😂
MOOD
What they actually talk about me behind my back
That's my brother right there !
Lol!
"she's always late for everything except for every meal" oh i didn't know they were singing about me
+nasa peepo I bet you also would make them laugh.
+Em Dee damn right. i'm fucking hilarious
+nasa peepo VALDEZ!!!
+McKenna Seegmiller what
+nasa peepo nvm...only fangirls would understand...
The great soprano Marni Nixon is singing in this scene. Marni sang for Deborah Kerr in The KIng and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Her singing is among the very best in all the musicals. I think this may be the only movie musical that she was ever credited for. Marni passed at 86 last month. Thanks for all the beautiful music Marni.
Maria. From. This. Musical. This. Song. About. My. Sister. Maria. A. Song. Is. About. Her. And. Sarah. Amanda. Will. This. Song. To. Maria. And. We. Love. About. The. Song. Maria. Makes. Me. Laugh. So. Hard.
Someone is dubbing for Anna Lee and I think it could be Marilyn King of the King Sisters. Ada Beth Lee is doing her own singing and so is Portia Nelson.
I hope this little ditty is true - and if so, thank you.
@@ez8546 There is no record of someone else dubbing for Anna Lee. So Anna did her own singing in that number
Portia Nelson was a fine singer and songwriter and much else. Known for her performances in cabarets, but I grew up hearing her on the Goddard Liebersonproduced recordings of classic Broadway musicals like The Boys from Syracuse. She was also memorable in the musical The Golden Apple. They really cast the nuns from top talent!@@ez8546
Beautiful. They're not saying anything is wrong with her. Maria is just Maria. These lyrics are helping me grieve my beloved cat who died two weeks ago. "How do you keep a wave upon the sand?" "How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?" He was my moonbeam. Even more so because he was hard to reel in but when he did snuggle up it was special
Being called "not an asset" is a nice way of saying useless.. until she says "Maria makes me laugh" they absolutely were calling her useless and that she doesn't belong...
@@atherisGAYIn other words, she wasn't a good nun. But she was still a good person. Just one that would be better off somewhere else!
Have a nice day :)
*complain about Maria singing in the abbey while singing in the abbey*
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING
EXACTLY!
Since when were religious people not hypocrites?
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING TOO! OMG LOL!!
Since when is singing outside considered singing inside?
Half the song is missing. I keep wanting them to continue:
"When I'm with her, I'm confused, out of focus and bemused, and I never know where I am."
"She's as flighty as a feather."
"Unpredictable as weather."
"She's a darling."
"She's a demon."
"She's a lamb."
Yes, it's driving me crazy! I want to hear the whole song!
AJStarhiker she’d out pester any pest, drive a hornet from its nest, she could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl, she is gentle she is wild, she’s a riddle she’s a child, she’s a headache, she’s an angel, she’s a girl...
That running part is the best XD
Ikrr😭😭
@@DioneN That's how I learned what a "whirling dervish" was!
My father used to sing this song for me all the time! I must say I really was a little reckless when I was young. :p
+Maria Confort all my teachers would sing this to me
+Maria Confort me too!
+Maria Confort that's so cute :)

good thing my name isn't Maria though it makes no difference my mom says this song reminds her of me and sings it with my actual name 😂👌
This song is great, they are not saying she’s a bad person. They are just saying that don’t wanna tie her down, she’s not cut out for being a nun and that’s not a bad thing.
This is truly ONE of the greatest movies ever made. What's even more incredible is how the director managed to get the older characters to sing like choir people. You would think that; as with everything, a persons' voice wouldn't work anymore the oder they got.
Joshua Casey Peggy Wood (Mother Superior) was actually dubbed because she felt she couldn’t sustain the high notes at her age.
The world has become too jaded and cynical for the the Sound of Music to be remade or be successful in 2022. But I think that people are starved today for this type of old fashioned filmmaking or entertainment which no one seems to be providing anymore. That is why I think that the Sound of Music from 1965 is still such a beloved and cherished film today. Plus director Robert Wise knew what he was doing since he also directed West Side Story in 1961.
“How do you hold a Moon beam on your hand” is by far one of the most beautifully sung lines.
You can tell there the popular mean girls in the nun community
haha!
And not only that sister!... is there singing in the Abby as well!☺

I almost cried when saw this, makes me remember when I studied with the "Sisters" in school (Inmaculado Corazón in Lima, Perú). All of them where like real mothers to us...some of my best childhood moments with them. Whenm I saw the movie , thougth that they where the same nuns as in my school (I was 7 years old then). Tahnks for sharing this wonderful footage of that "historical" movie "The Sound Of Music".BRAVOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God bless the nun that stood in Maria's defense. Love her
I think she was one of nuns - along with Sister Berthe, the most outspoken one - who removed the Nazis' car batteries so the Von Trapps could flee to safety.
Marni Nixon as Sister Sophia is one of the best sopranos in here. She was the ghost singer of My Fair Lady, West Side Story and The King and I. She was threatened, underpaid and not credited. The musicals she sang wouldn't have won Academy Awards. She deserves an Oscar. R.I.P. She will be missed.
She definitely deserved a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy that's for sure.
😂😂😂
She also did several fine albums, classical (largely modern) and non-. Her disc of songs by American composer Charles Ives is a standout. She appeared to acclaim off-Broadway in Taking My Turn (1983), and I remember seeing her in a contemporary opera at Lincoln Center, The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.
They all have such beautiful voices!
Love this film so much. I grew along with this movie. Rogers and Hammerstein are forever genius. Thanks for sharing. God bless you.
I'm 13 but big fan of this film
nopa rak I sing along with all the songs when I watch it
The original was way better than the new live one.
your welcome lucy
The live one sucked! More like The Sound Of New World Order. Saw a good version on Great Performances though.
I love Sound of Music. It's one of my favorite movies. I love all their songs and the whole movie!!
What is the name of the movie please?
The movie of this song? It’s called the Sound of Music…
You can't solve a problem like Maria.
All you can do is love her.
I feel like this is actually light hearted humor and they actually love her, because she is unique, and actually is authentic in every action. Theres a slight tinge of jealousy but mostly a motherly and sisterly feeling. 😅❤
Hammerstein at his lyrical inventive best- a genius. Any other lyricist would have ran out of ideas, but he keeps it up with inventive thoughts that perfectly express the sisters sentiments of Maria's character--and foreshadowing her leaving her old life for a new one.
One of the more amusing songs I listened to when I watched The Sound of Music for the first time in 1977. This and "The hills are are alive..." and "Loud is the voice of the Lonely Goat Herd." On catchy music value alone, The Sound of Music and all the actors, with us or not, have a perpetual, evergreen general appeal. Love it.
RIP Christopher Plummer (Captain Von Trapp) Friday Feb 5th 2021, 91 years old.
One of the best movies EVER
*“She’s always late for everything except for every meal”*
I’m honoured to be sang about but this calls me out too much
Daniela Aguilar Ha, ha, ha...
This film was such an uplifting experience for humanity! Perfectly divine! ❤️
This song touches my heart...I can definitely relate to Maria.
Hello Alisa, how are you doing?
So, how's the ADHD going? (Because SAME)
She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee, her dress has got a tear
She waltzes on her way to Mass and whistles on the stair
And underneath her wimple she has curlers in her hair
I even heard her singing in the abbey
She's always late for chapel, but her penitence is real
She's always late for everything, except for every meal
I hate to have to say it, but I very firmly feel
Maria's not an asset to the abbey
I'd like to say a word in her behalf (It say it, sister Margarita)
Maria makes me laugh
How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find the word that means Maria?
A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!
Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay and listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand?
Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?
Awesome u repeated it

Sergi Sabaté Ruano Thanks yaar
Princess Kassandra, if you're not kidding, it means being sincerely sorry and wanting to make up for what you did. I think what they mean the way they say it is that she has the well-intentioned spirit of a nun, just not the behavior of one.
I hope that one day, somewhere in the world, a flash mob will gather up and sing this most memorable tune. Has it been done?
0:06 that nun is Marni Nixon who provided the singing voice of Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Deborah Kerr in The King and I. The producers were nervous about how Julie Andrews would react to Nixon’s presence due to the then-unknown Andrews being passed over for My Fair Lady in favor of well-known star Audrey Hepburn, despite her originating the role of Eliza Doolittle on stage. When Andrews first met Nixon on set of The Sound of Music, she said to her, “Marni, I’m a fan of you!” and the producers were relieved.
If Julie Andrews had been given the film role as Eliza in "My Fair Lady", then they would have not needed Marni Nixon to dub for Audrey Hepburn, who was so disappointed when her singing voice was not used. But Julie got her revenge when she won "Best Actress" Oscar award for her performance & singing in her first film "Mary Poppins" and her former Broadway co-star, Rex Harrison, won "Best Actor" for "My Fair Lady".
Oh that explains why she was my favorite noun's voice 😂
Like I was ignorant about her identity, but at least I recognized quality
And now the award for the most elegant and classy diss track in history goes to these lovely ladies
"I've even heard her singing in the abbey"
As opposed to you, you mean. Hypocrite.
They aren't in the Abbey they are in the courtyard.
+milesandemilyrock SHUTDOWN

I always thought the Reverend Mother's shaking her head in the next shot was a silent way of saying, "Wait, that's what you're doing right now." At least until that's what she starts doing a few moments later.

exquisite melody/key changes too.
Love all the metaphors in the lyric: moonbeam, wave and sand, pinning down a clown, weather, hornet's nest. Great songwriting.
One of my favorite movies! The nun who opens the song with “She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee” was singer Portia Nelson who was a distant relative of my grandmother’s. She had a beautiful voice when she was younger and used to sing in nightclubs. Obviously I never knew her but knew the relationship. I’m from a family of musicians and this was one of my favorite musicals.
What a great play, and a great tune that keeps you smiling from beginning to end; wow, what a treat it is these days. Thanks for the treat.
It is a truly beautiful song that captures Maria.
This song describes me like no other. My blessing: I AM María.
Condolences :-)
“How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand.”
Maria you’re one of a kind
When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, mom insisted on watching this when it came on TV once and year. I hated it back then!
Watching it now brings happy memories and makes me smile!!!
they are giving out about maria singing in the abbey, but they are singing in the abbey so that is unfair...
1.This is a courtyard
2.Maria is a postulant,so she must follow different rules.

I'd like to say a word, on its behalf... this song. Makes. Me. LAUGH!!!😎😎😎
those high notes give me CHILLS
I love The Sound Of Music because I remember my parents’ country Austria 🇦🇹
This song was rendered in a Wedding March on the wedding of Maria and Col. von Trapp later in the movie and was even more stunningly beautiful
‘Maria makes me laugh’ ultimately
"A flibbertigibbet, a will o-the wisp,"
"a clown."
Me too, Maria. Me too.
There’s always a Maria in each of us, subject of ridicule and often treated as a laughing stock. What they don’t understand behind that every smile is a pain that seems to lasts forever. So for me, just carry on with life. Love and respect is crucial for everyday survival.
Y'all have no idea how many times I have had this song sung to me in my lifetime 🙄😂
my God! I never get tired watching this classic!
Beautiful, makes me cry everytime. Also feel like it describes me in some way
"A clown!!"

Such a great movie. You can watch it with your kids as easily as your grandparents
These are classics beyond compare, but these abridged versions on RUclips a killing me! Full length please!
I've always loved this scene when i was little. I sang along with this movie, and i used to call it , The kids, whem i was little
I wish life was all about singing, i wouldn't mind being fired by a song
Was there ever a work of art with it's heart in the right place more than the sound of music
“She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee”
That sounds like me, I have a thousand scrapes on my knees from climbing trees.
Smiling, right now she's getting ready for something laughter
I remember hearing this song in class before seeing the movie. Didn't understand what it was about. Then I saw the film and understood it.
"she waltzes on her way to mass and whistles on the stair" -- Sister Sophia -- is Marni Dixon, the great vocal dubber for Deborah Kerr (The King and I), Audrey Hepburn (My Fair Lady), and Natalie Wood (West Side Story)
:26 That Nun is my favorite XD
She's my kind of nun. Seems truly godly. She feels more connected to the Lord sitting in a valley of his creation than in a cold chapel
I can't say why, but these are some of my favorite lyrics in a song. I can't stop listening to it! ^^
