  • This one's VERY interesting! One of the games that kicked off Microsoft's introduction to next generation gaming has finally arrived - and it's not just available for Xbox Series consoles, it's also out now on PlayStation 5 and... Nintendo Switch? How do the three 'current-gen' console versions compare? What about the ray tracing and 120Hz support? And if this is a game designed for the new wave of consoles, how on earth has the developer delivered a port for Nintendo Switch? John Linneman has the answers.

    The Switch version seems surprisingly solid. Looks like they did a fine job balancing image quality, visuals, and performance as much as they reasonably could considering the hardware. Very good port.

    • @cbgg1585
      @cbgg1585 2 года назад +8

      'Considering' the hardware? Instead of unplaying the Switch and its 'weak hardware', how about we just acknowledge just how flexible the X1 still is. First, we had games like Doom 2016/Eternal, Warframe, The Witcher 3 and now Bright Memory on the Switch. Imo, people severely underestimated the Tegra X1 and how much it could do despite being 2 years of age when the Switch initially launched.
      It truly is amazing how much this chipset has done. No doubt devs are more experienced in developing for the Switch than they have back in the first couple years of the Switch's inception.

    And I don't think the fault is in the developers or tools: It's scope and focus. The ONLY reason Bright Memory ever got finished in the first place is because that one guy knew exactly what he wanted to do and did it. He did change the scope a bit, but he had his focus constant. No management to change up the focus just because a market analysis showed that you need to have dialogue options and RPG elements to keep up player retention so now you gotta scrap like half of the game to make this shit work.

    I don't like that you wrote "120hz" it should be "120 Hz". Call it a nitpick, but here is why :)
    1) There should always be a space between amount and unit ("120" and "Hertz")
    2) Hertz is abbreviated to "Hz" not "hz" or "HZ". It's even an SI unit.
    (Nearly same goes for "64gb" at 3:08)
    Also interesting spelling mistake in the game "VSYNCH" with the extra *H* at 6:44

      I know that Plague Tales was one of the first games to install as a dedicated cloud gaming app, so people are looking at ways to exceed the limits of the hardware.
      On the other hand, Android is still utter trash so there aren't enough higher-quality games on mobile devices in the West. Even with a late model Snapdragon 800 series, tons of games still seem far crappier than similar Switch titles. I'm hoping the Deck energizes the market and pushes some really crazy hardware in the near future. Anything with less efficiency than say a SD 8+ Gen 1, Bionic or the latest Dimensity.....they're not going to shake up the handheld market. I doubt Apple's got the personality for it, but they could make a gaming handheld and push the MacOS gaming ecosystem. GPD Win, Neo, especially the Deck have reopened handheld gaming; let's hold the door open and see what else comes through it.

    Thank you for the slow-mo of the tearing problems without Vsync. I always find tearing really annoying in longer play sessions (60min plus), though because it comes and goes so fast, I usually cannot tell from a shorter video if it will annoy me or not. This really helped!

    In handheld mode, the Switch version isn't bad. The load times are longer than on systems but not unbearably (I would recommend transferring the game to internal memory instead of memory card to make it a little bit faster), short campaign and lack of multiplayer lowers the value of the current $20 USD price. At the very least include episode 1 (for those who don't know, it was a paid demo that's separate from Infinite) into the package for the console versions. It's a good game if you want something to play for short periods and doesn't take a lot of space (Switch version is less than 2gb)
