Quite a change from the Kumamoto area. I like the alpine feel with the big pines and evergreens; at times I could imagine I was not in Akita but somewhere in Austria.
Interesting that this VERY rural line makes announcements in English, Korean and Chinese (in addition to Japanese). The countryside looks like I imagined it, plenty of farms with small pickup trucks!
I'm Taiwanese. I used it during Chinese New Year this year. The Akita Nairiku Circulation Railway is currently a hot topic in Taiwan. I also rode on the Sanko Line, and it brought me to tears as I remembered the Sanko Line I used to ride. A friend of mine has also ridden the Sanko Line and was in tears saying the scenery was the same as that time. Many Taiwanese will use this railway this year.

Wow, I used to travel this route quite a bit back in the day. Finding quite a few of my old Aomori/Akita routes online.

Well, the southern originating station is a stop on the Akita Shinkansen line, so it must attract some foreign visitors.
