I met Michael Stipe at the 40 Watt Club maybe a week after Automatic For The People came out. I was drunk and sort of rudely bumped into him too hard, but he was very nice about it and allowed me to make up for it by buying him Rolling Rocks all night as we both stood there and watched Vic Chesnutt perform. If he's reading this he might remember the night because they presented him with the original painting that graces the cover of Talking Heads Little Creatures album in an onstage ceremony between sets. The secret REM show at the 40 watt was the following weekend. Good times! It was like the exact moment in time when he was the biggest rock star in the world.
We don't need more hypocrite liberals who turn a blind eye to corruption, fascism, tyranny and doing away with basic human rights.. if it's democrats doing it!
7:11 feel like I've been waiting my entire life to hear Michael state this exact connection to Achtung and Zooropa. Those albums, that entire tour, and then Monster (and tour) and New Adventures knocked me senseless as a teenager in the 90s
Having grown up in Atlanta and Athens, I’m naturally a huge R.E.M. fan. I ran into Michael a couple of times at Blue Sky Coffee in Athens, and he was so kind. Watching this was such a treat and I’m sure it was for you as well. Thanks for sharing.
Saudades imensa desse cara no R.e.m! Grande cantor , artista de ponta . Michael ,olha cara, ouvi suas músicas me trazem lembranças lindíssimas e as vezes me fazem chorar .vc marcou a minha adolescência!
Right before New Adventures in Hi-Fi. My favorite REM release. A huge fan from the beginning New Adventures... blew me away after Monster. It fit my life like a glove at the time. Every song. Patti Smith. A slow motion record of intensity and insight.
HAH vindication. I wrote that before listening to the interview. Excellent interview. I had no idea Michael felt so strongly about New Adventures.... as I do. Him and Patti Smith also nail it on Cinderella Boy off, I feel, an extremely underrated album Collapse Into Now. Wait, that song is titled Blue.
Patti Smith used to live in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, as Michael says, on the outskirts of Detroit, not far from where I used to live. Never met her but always kept my eyes open for a chance meeting in those suburbs, which was not conducive to meeting anyone easily. Lol Anyhow, did you say “Driver Ace?” Gosh, I hope not.
No bigger R.E.M. fan than me...but I hope they stick to their word (as they've always done) and do not get back together...they have nothing more to prove...
I would make my famous wasabi beef vegetarian tacos - a must - for Mike & Michael if they would play my Super Bowl BBQ this February. Let me know guys.
Dont care when the kids knock their idea of the "Arena Rock" REM-they werent around in the 80's when this band was the epitome of cool. All those early albums are burned into my psyche.
I almost didn’t recognize Stipe and Mills. They’re getting old and so am I. It’s a good thing I rarely look in the mirror. I could be in for a shock. 😳Yikes! Time is a Cruel Thief! It literally takes everything away from you and there’s nothing you can do. 👎🏻
@@raisa_cherry35 Is that why I shattered the Mirror?🪞 I took one look and it cracked! 🤣😂 At least I still have my sense of humor. I’m a Troglodyte but I still can laugh about it. 😂😆
Famous people often were friends with 'losers' when they were young. It'd be madness for rich (creatively and materially) people to want to do that their whole life.
Thank you for watching! If you liked it, PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! I’m posting three new interviews every week!

Popular culture is worse off for the absence of these genial and creative gentlemen’s integrity and their take on the world. Damn I miss REM
Mills has been quite active post R.E.M. Stipe? Not as much.

These are great, wise legends. They wrote the soundtrack to my life since age 14. I’m glad they are still out there doing interviews.

@@mariaeugeniagalarzamolinas5459Athens, Georgia, USA. Where they're from.
R.E.M was a huge part of my youth AND my mid-life crises..we have been through a lot together LOL Thanks for everything wonderful memories.
I love hearing Stipe talk,he's too cute 💜😍
-this is exactly the kind of room I see Michael Stipe living in
Great to see the ol' Mike's together again lol. A must.
You get the best guests..
REM best rock band in the world xx
Michael Stipes still looks great. Its insane how fast he speaks but how slow and good he sings. lol

Very enjoyable thumbs up!
Muy bueno. Sigo escuchando los temas muy lindos
I think it sounds like more than an REM album; simply one of the best 90s rock albums by any band, if that makes sense.
"relatable and translatable".....for sure, michael....and great to hear there's more coming :)
Awesome interview.
@15:00 Talking about being in a hash bar with Richard Linklater in 1995: that was right about the time that his Before Sunrise movie came out :)

I heard that Richard once said something about withdrawal in disgust not being the same as apathy, or something.
All the best.
I love the monk reference from Mike.
I WISH WE COULD GET SOME NEW REM STUFF TODAY BECAUSE IN MY OPION WE NEED IT SOME VITAGE STUFF. I THING THEY COULD BE MORE RELIVENT THAN EVER,
New adventures is my favourite too

REM - what can I say, they are known in every corner of the world. Come back and do one more tour.

@@MT-kx2uc Haven't they given enough? They did their thing, and did it well...and now they're done...amen...

Estaría genial, si lo tradujeran al español 🎉😅

Alarm Clocks and Ren & Stimpy!
Two Mikes 😂💜💜💜💜
One Mike, one Michael.
REM is the best
Bye from Holland

They became huge in the 90s for a reason; the older stuff isn't as good, but there are some gems there for sure.
What does he think about lacuna coil's cover you think?
Agree.
What's ur frequency of heaven, shining rock that blow's off the 🧦 a dock of the bay to say hey. 💟

Miss this guy and the band. They just don’t make bands and music like this anymore
I love REM just as much as any other fan, but nobody loves REM more then REM loves REM.

are famous people ever friends with losers or just other famous people ??
