  • I've rounded up another 101 nostalgic DOS games I could find, but this time I haven't played these myself. From DONKEY.BAS to Liero. These are 101 more MS DOS games.
Based on the last video, there's no background music this time, so you can enjoy the sounds of the games themselves to add to the nostalgia. Try not to cry!

I play Red Dead Redemption 2, and looking back, I'm amazed that I was SO entertained by those early games. I had an IBM XT with a 4.77 MHz 8088 processor, 512k RAM, and two 5.25 inch floppy drives. No hard drive, 4 color CGA graphics at 320x200 resolution (one step up from monochrome). And yet, I thought those early games were just the most fantastic thing technology had ever given mankind. I still look back on those days fondly, although I certainly appreciate the upgraded graphics the decades have given us.

    So many memories!
Makes me think of the days when my dad was sitting at his Computer and we gathered around him, watching, helping solving puzzles in the games... Alone In The Dark scared me as a child but I loved watching it. Later my sister and I had our own computer and we played games like Commander Keen, Shadow Of The Comet, Monkey Island and so many more. Sweet sweet memories! I miss those days when PC games were something special that brought the family together. 😫

And i will never forget the times when i brought tapes from my friends and load error messages on C=64 and later several floppies from the school times where last of them had bad sectors on my PC :-D

It depends on the game and what you liked. I'd say a lot of games from this MS-DOS era have aged really well and play great to this day. Platformers might feel the most aged because of how much the genre has matured since the early 90s (with a possible exception to Prince of Persia and its sequel cause those games were amazing), but strategy games, flight sims, FPS, graphic adventures, and RPGs I would argue hold up really well.
IMHO the games that have aged the worst are that first-generation of games using real-time 3D graphic accelerators. The change from 2D to 3D was a rough one and developers were still trying to figure things out.

I love Loom. That game was years ahead of its time. It even came with an audio cassette to describe the events that lead to the games' intro. Bobbin Threadbare was the main protagonist and you had to use Elder Atropose's distaff in order to solve unique puzzles by means of musical notes placed along it. Thanks for the upload. I'm a sucker for this sorta thing :)

Yay, Extreme Assault! By the way, I always preferred running it without Glide - the effects won't differ much as it supports dithering and blending via MMX anyway (the only drawback are the unfiltered models), but the terrain looks sharp and neat this way, and the postprocessing becomes much nicer (like, neat static in the cutscenes).

There’s something about these old games and the way they were made that made them far more enjoyable to play than today’s games. Something that could contribute to that is the fact that once you bought a game you could play the full game with no limitations, not competing with other players except by the high score you got with everyone being on even ground, not having any “additional costs” and DLC. Developers these days create games so easy thanks to the technology the older generation created and then have the hide to keep asking for more money even after someone has done them the favour of buying their game. Such greed today.

There are games that can be played over and over again currently. And also, saying that competitive games are something bad...
Dude, I was born in 84 and even if I can say that old games have their own value that makes them special. I can enjoy current games a lot more because of how online gaming allowed everyone to play with other players from other places.

It almost feels like you only played very small, highly hyped selection of modern games. Have you heard about Indie games? Most of them don't have "additional costs", microtransactions and other bullsh*t. And occasional DLC may really be huge in those games. All you have to do is to ignore big overhyped ones made by big companies like EA. Or free multiplayer games - oc course those will be loaded with microtransactions.
Immediate suggestions (visually somewhat similar to old games + with great gameplay): Hollow Knight, Rain World, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Terraria, Project Zomboid, Epic Battle Fantasy 5, Celeste, Stardew Valley

I am a fairly typical angry Gen-X kid. I dont have nostalgia for much but I really did enjoy PC gaming from the 80's thru the 90's. Around the time KOTOR 2 came out I started getting worn and tired. (KOTOR 2 was pushed out early and had missing content and lots of bugs. It soured me on games after that.)
The joy from transitioning to Win95 and Win98 with 3D acceleration was pure bliss. But if I'm honest the era of massive progress didnt really last too long.

You should add Battlecruiser 3000AD. The whole controversy was caused by publisher who released a game half made and the developer had to absorb all the flames while he struggled to develop patches. It was too complicated, buggu and gameplay was light but it remains unmatched as it was the first serious attempt to simulate a capital ship.
