  • Last summer, college student and singer-songwriter Penelope Scott uploaded two snippets of her song, “Rät,” to TikTok, calling it a “breakup letter to the tech cult that is Silicon Valley.” The song was still a work in progress at the time, but it quickly took off online and became one of her biggest hits on streaming thus far. The self-produced track, which appears on her most recent album, Public Void, has racked up nearly 30 million streams on Spotify alone. On the song, Scott rejects the assumption that Big Tech has had a positive influence on our society.

As toxic as the general population of TikTok is, the way so many musicians started out on it is so insane. I remember seeing this on my feed for the first time, and then seeing it on Spotify, and now here we are. What a time to be a musician.

My 9 year old introduced me to this song yesterday, and it really hit home. I've worked in tech for 20 years, and have been pretty successful financially. But I look back at how optimistic I was when I started vs. how my company operates now, and... boy this song really struck a nerve.

Found that while looking up the word. Apparently it's also the side of fabric which is supposed to be seen? Thought that might have been an ironic name for the song somehow.
I liked the name of Penelope's album "Public Void." It already has meaning just as it is, but if looking into coding, "Public" is an access modifier meaning to be visible and usable by all, while "void" is a lack of parameters, meaning the function returns nothing. There could be a few interesting interpretations of it.

"I studied code because I wanted to do something great like you and the real tragedy was half of it was true." That line hit me hard. For me it's not quite the same since I thought it was fun so I taught myself to program when I was a kid. I wasted my teenage years in this illusion of creativity until I realized that I hadn't eaten properly for the 3rd day in a row because I was just inputting semi-meaningful characters into a vim terminal for 9 hours a day. Luckily I realized just before I got out of high school so I'm studying to be a piano technician now.

    Selmers's poem:
"There's no reception in Possum Springs
    No reception here
I wave my black phone in the air
    Like a flare
    Like a prayer
    But no reception
I read on the Internet baby face boy billionaire
Phone app sold made more money in one day than my family over 100 generations
More than my whole world ever has
World where house-buying jobs became rent-paying jobs became living with family jobs
    Boy billionaires
    Money is access
Access to politicians waiting for us to die
    Lead in our water
    Alcohol and painkillers
Replace my job with an app
Replace my dreams of a house and a yard
With a couch in the basement
    "The future is yours!"
    Forced 24-7 entrepreneurs.
I just want a paycheck and my own life
I'm on the couch in the basement
They're in the house and the yard
Some night I will catch a bus out to the west coast
And burn their silicon city to the ground
(I figure somebody must have already made this comment, but just in case!)

You bring a lot of important topics, hunger, proverty, evolution to other planets, society, economics, Silicon valley. I mean wooow. What I notice in the song is an young adult coming of age realizing how f$^%^&%$up the world is. And I see it. I understand it. Big issues that are here and not being fixed. • @cinderellasunderstudy2937
      @cinderellasunderstudy2937 3 года назад +436

@@you_gullible_fucc First Line “I come from scientists and atheists and white men who kill God” So she states that she is discoed from religion.
“Experiments and sacrilege” connects science and religion.
“We’re as flawed as any church” In our society religion gets more and more replaced by the idealization of tec gurus like Elon Musk.
“I bit the apple cause I trusted you” This not only con be connected to the apple logo. It could be a reference for de corruption of Eve, which is the religious way of saying someone chose the red pill.
These are the things that are most prominent, but there is also the use of religion connoted words like “dogma”.
I would say that another important message of the song is, that we didn’t eradicate religion, we just replaced it with an equally flawed belief system.
