  • At the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia, Director Jim Supica shows John Popp one of the least known six-guns of the West, the 44 caliber Merwin Hulbert revolver. It's the finest machined firearm of the era. Jim demonstrates its unique operating system. This first model is an open top scoop flute single action. He calls it the best made revolver of the 1870s and 1880s. Originally aired on 8/31/17.

These guns were actually manufactured by Hopkins & Allen.

Yeah, MH were mostly importers. But the Hulburts were part owners of Hopkins & Allen.
Some of the speculation of the only moderate commercial success of the Merwin Hulbert Revolver was that they were being made under the Hopkins Allen name, which wasn't synonymous with high quality like Colt and S&W were at the time.

I have noticed Jim has a hard time pronouncing HULBERT! HUL-BERT.

That is not the least of things that Jim struggles with. I'm told I can't pronounce curator correctly. I blame being a Kansan. -- Jim
