Need to go with the 14-ft door so RVs and the like can be parked in your shop. You never know what the future holds! The three overhead doors with high performance insulation to take a look at are the Raynor TM200C, Haas 2033-20, and the Clopay 3720. The Clopay was the cheapest for me when I got my 14'h x 16'w door.
labor costs are way higher than material costs. osb + tyvek will have more labor so the total cost of the system is closer. Also with zip sheathing you get good air sealing which you don't really get with the other two systems
Thankfully I no longer live in an HOA, so I can do whatever I want. That being said my shop walls are just the sheet metal (24 gauge) with fiberglass insulation batts behind them. I used to think this made me lucky - it was fast and easy to install. However, I have since learned that anytime I want to hang anything off the external walls outside or inside the shop, I have to build out a 2x4 wall in any case. I didn't really end up saving any time (or money). Oh well - learn as we go! Love the progress on your shop, thank you for sharing it with us!
It sounds like you could have water and wind shear problems in the future. If you did a diy maybe have an engineer double check. It really might rot quickly or blow over in a big storm. people don't just use wrb and structural sheathing just to waste money. They want their building to last
Regarding your door situation. Do what I call a double frame. Frame for the large door that you may want or help sell the place in the future. Frame in the smaller more affordable door, inside that frame. When it comes to the brick work. Brick it with expansion joints at the larger door. Maybe add some decorative touches within the large door frame so it blends in and looks like it was done on purpose. Down the road, easy tear out of the door to install the large RV style door. As for windows in the garage door, my opinion absolutely a must.
Great job a sheathing the backside; right-side and part of the front of your new shop building! I cannot wait to see you finish sheathing the front of the shop building, and installing a garage door! Well done!
13’ door is high enough. They can run the door rails at an angle to follow the roof. Also go with a lift master garage door opener, they are very quiet and reliable. I just had 2 installed at the firehouse I volunteer at.
I second this. I used to run a 1 million square foot shopping mall, never replaced a lift master brand opener but replaced a lot of other brands with lift masters!! Great quality units.
Great vids. My brothers and I build our own shops on our ranch here in Texas as well, and it's way more work than people realize. We went a bit bigger, and built 3 shops totaling 32,250 Sqft, encompassing a full paint and body shop, metal fab and cnc, wood shop, car workshop, powder coating, and 6000 sqft showroom for our car collection that is already too big, even with 5 four car storage lifts. We built almost everything ourselves except for the concrete, and after putting the roof on the 110x100 paint shop we said no and had the other shops roofs done. We also had spray foam done, and had 8 full glass garage doors installed, as well as 5 storefront window sections that are 21'x8', and 3 sections that are 16'x8'. All we have left is grinding and polishing our own concrete, pouring 40,000 sqft of concrete drives outside with all the storm water drainage, and finishing off the interiors completely so we don't see any insulation at all. Keep up the great work, and good luck with the rest of the project.
Here's a probable solution to your garage door opener. I bought and had installed a direct drive opener. It attaches to the pipe that turns to open and close the garage doors. Lowe's sells them and believe me when I say it's a lot easier to install. Now, thats on a regular two car garage door, but hey maybe they make one for a longer door. It's pricey, but worth the money. It also comes with an electronic lock so no one will be opening that door when you close it. It was around $500. Last year so it might be a bit more now. Good luck with the project!
Man, I felt that last clip. After mine was done I just sat inside and stared at everything for about an hour. It's a great feeling being inside a blank slate. I will tell you this... Jack-Shaft door opener. It might be a bit more than a chain or belt drive, but the things are super quiet. additionally, it's one less thing that "pierces" into your shop. I've got one on my 12'x12' door. Also keep in mind when you're doing quotes that you may be asking for an odd size, which can cause the price to exponentially go up. Using standard dimensions will keep it slightly more reasonable. Loving the videos! Keep it up!
It’s looking awesome! Don’t skimp on the door. Wait for have to. Insulated without tracks would be the way I would go. As someone I know says buy it nice or buy it twice.
Could consider a aircraft hanger style insulated door. Also see them on farmers buildings. Can build frame yourself out of square tubing and insulate with foam board. You could build that 100 percent yourself
I built a 24x30 metal building (not red iron though) and used sectional garage door. My opening is 18ft wide so it took a little longer to get the order, but it was a fraction of the cost of a roll up door rated for our wind requirements 120mph in the Mojave desert. My door is only 8ft tall, but my peak is 15ft with a 12ft ceiling height at the trusses. I had them use high lift tracks so the door snugs up to the ceiling very nicely. Unless you need the extra height for an RV then limit the size of the door because even the most expensive sectional doors don't insulate as well as the walls. I have 2in of closed cell spray foam on the walls of 24gauge PBR panel and 3/4 ACX plywood, but I can really feel the heat from the door compared to the walls when the sun is lower in the afternoon blasting my garage door. Nearly any local home garage door installer can get and install sectional doors that will work very well for much less than the cost of a commercial roll up door.
Put in a flat slat non insulated door and then insulate yourself. There are plenty of videos on how to do it and it’s cheaper and better insulated. Also, if your roof is high enough, run the garage door straight up, not up and over. That way you aren’t blocking ceilings and lights in the building when the door is open.
I think I’ve been following you for around a year now and your channel has quickly became one of my favorites and I look forward to seeing your content
I think you should do a 10 foot high door high lift at 3 to 4 feet whatever you can that will fit your wall hight. The door will sit in the high lift so it won't be 10 feet back into your shop giving you more room for car lift clearance. If you do a 14 foot door it will be 14 plus into the shop plus if you use a trolly opener that will be another 2 to three feet. I'd use a jack shaft opener lift master makes a 98032 that is made for bog heavy doors or the 98022 would work great on a 10 or 12 foot door. Just my advice.
You should talk to the house garage door sub to see if he can add on 1-2 extra door sections. 8’0” too short for your front fascade. 10’ or 12’ would look mo bettah. You might have to use a 3/4hp motor for add’t weight….. You should also check how much more to hang door higher. With an 8’ door head height, hang door 10 or 12’. Will provide way more headroom for normal activities, and more latitude on car lifts in the future. IMHO. Good luck. From a bruddah in Nuuanu.
Looking great! I was on the same path with doors, and the same thought. I wanted flat panel, insulated and roll up, with a good weather seal. But you have a point. It's a waste of structural sheathing when all it's doing is..... ? The framing will hold up siding, the spray foam will make it airtight. So the sheathing is a waste.

Since you plan on a black ceiling. You should consider painting or powder coating all your garage door track and hardware black before installing them. Also when shopping for a garage door make sure that the windows are insulated glass. In Michigan we have a 14x14 insulated garage door. But the windows are only single pane glass.
Been seeing your channel since before you started building your dream garage and I gotta say every video you make just seeing the transformation of your garage from nothing but grass in the backyard to almost being done is amazing bro!! Keep it up you’re almost there! Can’t wait to see the final product!
You should build a awning off the front. The shade would do wonders. When I was in the Middle East we built awnings or canvas covers over everything to keep the sun off the buildings.
Always check in for the updates. I fully understand the struggle with work. I work about 75 hours a week and have so many projects I want to complete. Keep up the great content.
Molokai building is looking nice, with all that sheeting to put in that makes a big difference, when wind blows from the West you will need to have that garage close at all times. Great job....
Encouraging to see the zip hold up so well. We are just about finished with our custom home here in Tx and I paid up to do 7/16 zip for walls and 5/8 zip for roof decking. A lot of builders on YT seem to recommend zip which is what sold me on it.
In sweden we use stone wool and weather proof fabric. Only place we add weather protectice boards are if a house is situated right by the ocean. Think that would be a much cheaper alternative.
Looking fantastic bud, love the mural on the back wall. I'm hoping to get my ceiling installed on Friday, I've been running water and air lines throughout the whole shop and luckily I don't have any leaks! Take care and don't work too hard out there!
Building near Daingerfield this year, bought my Zip panels back in January for $30/sheet. By April, they were $47/sheet, dropped back to $33 and, just checked, back to $47.04 at Lowe’s.
i bought the same force field for for walls and roof and used the yellow tape on everything also the liquid flashing is great for along the bottom and nail holes but had to order it off amazon couldnt find it anywhere else ....also got my boards at the cheap price before it jumped. mines a 40x40x13 2x6 walls. our code wouldnt allow a metal frame. loving the progress and keep it up my guy.

In Texas metal buildings are actually better in long haul unless you do all the termite proofing around your slab etc, and metal roofs for water collection. With your asphalt shingle roof, you will have to check regularly for missing shingles after wind storms.
I know you're saving a ton of money doing it yourself but I also know it's still expensive. I watch all the ads for ya bro. It's what I hope folks do when my channel eventually gets monetized.
That thermoply is the reason why I walked away from many builders. Finally got a house built with OSB. That cardboard has holes everywhere after installation that the builder doesn’t cover. Ridiculous. FYI those are ring nailed (grooved). I used a similar battery powered gun with similar results. Some nails just don’t go all the way and had to go back with a Hammer. That was after one gun broke on me. Seems air guns are the way to go. Nice build.
Suggestion and or question.. depending on Texas building codes. Why not just build your own door similar to the actual building and have it split in the middle and swing open like barn doors or an airplane hanger? Could even add hydraulics and make it automatic or just a manual open/ close door.
I used this stuff, and it's good, but PENCIL LINES ARE A PAAIIN on the silver and black. My Menards sells the yellow forcefield tape, and when I was buying it, zip was hardly more expensive. I've used both, Zip is slightly better on chip out and stiffer overall. The black paint on the edges of the forcefield seems to end up on your hands.
Had to give this a thumbs up for showcasing the journey. Really appreciate the channel, you gave me a few upgrade ideas I was able to implement on my 2020 RST. Keep up the great work!!!
Dude i love that your channel keeps growing been a fan since your home in Hawaii with the 07 as the only truck. Really cool that you have the same sponsors as the big channels. Keep the content coming. Bring back your camera man too!! Tell the camera man the strike is over. Lol
Did you try ordering the windows from lowes/homedepot online for delivery? That sometimes will find old stock at other stores without you having to track it down.
100% agree. There's nothing stronger than a 3/4" thick plywood sheathed house. Well... Maybe concrete. But nothing wood related that you can buy. I've seen so many stress tests of OSB vs plywood and plywood is sooooo much stronger.
Been a pleasure watching! Your marketing career is clearly audible in the pitch explanations; ❤️ it! From a fellow CMO, can’t wait to see more progress!
I plan on doing Zip System. It's not too bad here in Wisconsin from my supplier. It is more money, but I do think it's better. I have watched other compare the 2 and liked the Zip better. Love your videos. I will be recording my barndo build soon too. :)
The drainage membrane at the bottom of the wall is typically referred to in the construction industry as "Through-wall membrane flashing". Make sure you use a cavity protection system such as mortar net at the bottom of the air cavity behind the brick and use the cellular type cavity vents in the brick head joints. The old rope method is not reliable.
As long as you do not plan on ever getting an RV or boat. My friend’s shallow sport that we took out yesterday looks new and his neighbors that is kept outside looks really oxidized. Gel coating on boats takes a beating in Texas. Both boats are 5 years old.
The more time passes the more I like cdx. Sure Advantec 5/8 square edge was my go to pre-zip, but now ? Half inch cdx then R'wool or foam, and then another layer of half inch cdx, or 3/4 strapping is the minimum standard. K. D. Tongue and Groove is not a bad choice if you integrate a bracing scheme into the framing.
Wow looks so good and I’m sure you are super excited and tired!😂 Don’t worry about the upload frequency. We realize the daily grind. Every upload is a treat. Keep up the great work!😎

Cut the window openings on the back wall to allow the wind a way out. Until you get all your walls sheared and your doors on you risk having wind blow off your roof and sidewalls.

Dude i love that your channel keeps growing been a fan since your home in Hawaii with the 07 as the only truck. Really cool that you have the same sponsors as the big channels. Keep the content coming. Bring back your camera man too!! Tell the camera man the strike is over. Lol
🤙🏽 THANKS FOR WATCHING ALL THIS TIME!
The amount of pride and thought you put into what you do is top notch. 👌🏽
Great idea to have the mural on the back of the shop
you get shit done buddy!! it's coming together nicely!! 👍👍
Did you try ordering the windows from lowes/homedepot online for delivery? That sometimes will find old stock at other stores without you having to track it down.
Plywood beats osb all day
You have one the best eclipse time lapse of all the channels I follow great job on it and wonderful job on the shop❤
its amazing the cardboard stuff is allowed to be used. imaging using it on a vinyl sided house you could just run threw the wall
Your Art skills are just as impressive as everything else on your channel. 👍🏼🇺🇸🧂
Thanks for doing these videos. I'd assert moisture is the biggest test for siding--especially for those of us in wet environs.
A regular traditional garage door you gotta have one foot of clearance above it for the tracks and everything for a roll
Some crazy rain there hopefully some day will have property in WI, KS, & OK
You should get a high lift garage door
I plan on doing Zip System. It's not too bad here in Wisconsin from my supplier. It is more money, but I do think it's better. I have watched other compare the 2 and liked the Zip better. Love your videos. I will be recording my barndo build soon too. :)
MACHINE!!!!! But I am watching the full video.
Sarge is a definite trooper. Nothing like Ohana when you need help. 🤙🏼😈🤙🏼
Building is coming together nice and I am sure you will make it look good at the end.
Green Hinge Garage door system to help seal door.
Awesome progress! I have been enjoying watching your shop project, thank you for sharing your journey
I wonder if you could just add extra garage door panels to get a larger opening
Insane amount of work you've put in
Been here since 20k subs. Super cool to see where this channel has gone
🤙🏽🤙🏽
As long as you do not plan on ever getting an RV or boat. My friend’s shallow sport that we took out yesterday looks new and his neighbors that is kept outside looks really oxidized. Gel coating on boats takes a beating in Texas. Both boats are 5 years old.
I bought 5/8 osb back in early March for $14.23 a sheet because I knew the prices would jump up later. It's already at $20.35 right now and climbing.
I used the GP sheathing. Got from Menards about 2 years ago for about $10 a sheet.
It was on sale. Wish I would have bought more
The shop is looking great. Awesome job
Go with aluminum flashing at the base. That plastic will go away in a year
Wow looks so good and I’m sure you are super excited and tired!😂 Don’t worry about the upload frequency. We realize the daily grind. Every upload is a treat. Keep up the great work!😎
Looking good man can’t wait for the finish project
You should have captured the hundreds of cresent moons that the eclipse cast upon your dreams shop! That would have been very cool!
Wading through the pond is one way to clean your tracks off
The eclipse is cool, I’d like to go to Hawaii and witness Lahaina Noon
I spy a black E36 in the background. Man, love your channel. I have modeled my garage after yours and I also have an E36. Unfortunately, don’t have the space for a dream shop so will continue to live vicariously through your channel, haha.
I commend you for your work ethic and your ingenuity!
Frame in a flat loft for storage and door tracks, also use wall mount lift
Cut the window openings on the back wall to allow the wind a way out. Until you get all your walls sheared and your doors on you risk having wind blow off your roof and sidewalls.
on the gargae doors go for practical/logical and 'like'
