as a ex door installer....get yourself a couple pusher springs for the rail on top that go at back of the rail to stop the door and help it coming down, always worred and have seen people install a door and then wound springs to tight to have it fly off the top rails at the back. remember too you can take a couple winds out of your springs not jump the door open so much, adding weight will help as well. want to door to sit open about half way with no weight and not spring up...once you get an opener that will help open the rest of the way but excellent job!! love the build!!
Thank you! Super helpful. I put a couple of long bolts on the back of the track to act as a stopper but I’ll check out the push springs. I may need to unwind these a little.
Did you add the struts yet? If you still have 3 or 4 struts to add that may balance the door out, install those before taking a couple quarter turns off of the springs!
Yep. And we all know he's gonna add an opener at some point, so taking a turn out of the springs will make the doors weight more neutral for the opener.
@@LonestarHawaiianthere is no such a going as a pusher spring. In my 15 years doing doors I have only heard that from a customer that just got screwed on a second spring they didn’t need. Put the struts on the door and if it dosnt balance out either you miscounted or they sent you the wrong springs. You did a great job for someone with no previous experience lol
This comment 👌 my boss opened a customers door same size and tore his arm up. Messed his back up too, people under estimate garage doors because they’re everyday functions but improperly adjusted can hurt you pretty bad. Good job dude, keep it up
Great job! And for anyone that wants to do this, be aware that winding/unwinding these springs is EXTREMELY dangerous. Never have your head or body in the path of the winding rods. Always ensure they are bottomed out and seated well.
Awesome. It’s not the problems that define your work. It’s the innovation and problem solving, that make you are rockstar. Love the build and the new door.
You are amazing person sir… you have built this garage from the ground up… most people including myself would not attempt to do this.. and you did it all by yourself except couple extra hands… congratulations on getting this far on the garage… looks excellent… !!
Epic outro! seriously!! All the RUclipsrs outro's are... well, tbh, they are boring! Ya nailed it! THAT needs to be your new norm. Your energy is contagious and I always come back for more!
OUTSTANDING PROGRESS AND PERSISTENCE! As you said, 'real life and first time DIY' - thank you for the reality and learnings you do NOT edit out - absolutely amazing progress, quality and COST SAVINGs with the DIY! keep it up - love the channel and content.
I've been waiting about 3yrs to hit that point lol. Almost have the main bay sealed up, just need to finish the bay door and a couple small details. I'm using 4" metal insulated roofing panels to build the door, it will be a slider on the inside. Getting it to seal is the big trick. Merry Christmas.
@lonestar Hawaiian as a DIY and paranoia on miscounting winds i numbered the starting hole in the turn rod 'holes' in each winding cone: 1. That way I can always visibly tell when I got to one full spring rotation, and my count was on track. Lol. Each full rotation has me back at my starting hole. Just a tip to help me stay on count.
Thoroughly enjoy your videos and this project, you are an inspiration to others to show them what they can actually do themselves. Cant wait to see the finished project.
I've had both my hands shattered by old springs that broke when installing a garage door opener, and I did it for a living just a freak accident so doing this and not having experience all power to you good job
Great job, you are real and showing people if you want something bad enough, you can accomplish anything with time and patience. Now you can say you did this and be proud of your accomplishment! Keep being real 😊
Fantastic video! Love seeing the major mistakes like that. Saves many of us from the same and why many of us watch, to get what nuggets we can from the process. Thanks for making that entertaining! Kudos on the awesome build and price!
I was about to comment that your door frame should have been flush with your wall and then you mentioned finding that out the hard way. I would never use an impact driver to tighten the self tapping sheet metal screws that hold the hinges on either. The crew that did that on my door overtorqued at least half the screws and they worked loose after a year or so of use due to distortion of the metal containing the threads. I had to buy oversize screws and have replaced almost all of the screws after 20 years of use. I installed my own garage door on a garage I built 30 years ago and I tightened the screws by hand and never had a problem. Impact wrenches, even with clutches or torque sticks almost always substantially overtorque fasteners and distort threads due to the impact. Much better to smoothly tighten by hand.
I applaud you of your work ethic your ingenuity and your cost savings ability. I’m blown away by all that you have done building this garage. I applaud you! 👍🎉👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Here in Michigan, our company would have purchased and installed a 14x14 insulated door with windows and a jack shaft Liftmaster opener for $7000. Total parts and labor. How sad that the companies in your area just flat out take advantage of people. We would have installed the complete job in less than 7 hours. Great job installing your own door. As a door installer of 24 years, I have had a few injuries myself, and I have met numerous customers who ended up in the hospital with injuries from trying to change their own springs or door. Be safe out there.
You did good, man. Im in the garage, Doors bissnes, now for more than 12 years, and those prices you local dealers give you are insane install and everything i will done it for 5k it should only takes 4 to 5 hours off labor
The only thing I cans say is "MAGNIFICENT" What an absolute achievement. You've done a better job than any tradesman would have done at the most economical cost. Thanks for sharing. Billy J..... Queensland, Australia.
Any preventive maintenance as far as replacing springs before they break? Ive had a residential garage door snap springs while opening and the damage caused by the door slamming down was ridiculous, I would not wanna see what a door like this would do. .
Door looks great! You will never regret the larger door. It’s when you go small you have the “I wish I….” I also like that you show the mistakes. Keep doing that. Makes all of us know it’s good to make the mistakes and learn from them.
I was outside working on my truck for like over six hours, and by the time I was headed inside at around 11 p.m., I was cramping up like crazy. I did drink a lot of water, but I guess I needed electrolytes also, so this ad you did with LMNT is the universe telling me, "Hey, you NEED this," lol. Awesome content, man, as always!
i built my shop myself using block . i dry stacked it and filled the cells with cement then stuccoed it. its very solid . framed my 35 foot wide span roof 6/12 with a ridge beem frame instead of trusses
Roll Up Door ("Garage door") installation and service are easily the most marked up services in all of commercial/retail/industrial real estate. Oh and Pelco camera licensing fees!
So materials 30% labor 40%, general business overhead 15% . That leaves 15% job cost for profit and responsibility for taxes. If the tax component is 30% of the profit component that means the contractor will net 10% of the quoted job, or 30,000. The fear of the contractor is if material and labor go up 10% before all costs come in that’s 40 + 50 = 90% so correct if you do it yourself you won’t go out of business and won’t have part of your job be what the government gets (the contractor uses the profit from you to pay the government, you know taxes?). So good on you to do the work 👍
cost of materials & labor haven't skyrocketed 300+% but contractors & the real estate market don't want you to look into that. A decade ago you could get an 1800 sq. foot all brick home for $90k.... this is much simpler than that.
Thanks for the video and for pointing out where to get the doors. If I need to save some bucks, I now know how I might be able to do it. Great that you had your Dad to help and your son to provide some break time entertainment.
For some extra weight (not much), and as a bonus, light! On my residential garage door, I mounted led lights underneath and used an electric cord reel with the clicker removed to reel in/out every time the door opens and closes. There's a limit switch mounted to the top where the door opens to engage the light circuit. Mine is controlled by "lady A". Glad to give more details if you'd like
I'm building a 40x70' shop myself as well, buy yourself one of those hand held laser tape measures, TRUST ME you will not regret it when trying to measure long distances in the shop, its a life saver. Its my favorite tool for this project by far!

You are a BADASS ! If it was easy to do, installers wouldn't charge so much to do. Revel in overcoming all that had to be overcome to achieve your TOTAL SUCCESS. MAD PROPS!
It shot up because the spring is calculated for the weight of the door with the struts. It should be balanced with them on. It was a good idea to use the rope to control it going up. i puckered when i saw you were going to pull the track lock without the struts and i didnt see if you put backing bolts at the end of the track to stop it from shooting out of the back of the track.
Loving this series i am wanting to build a home shop and getting plenty of ideas. Just ordered the sample pack to try. I work as a mechanic and this heat is killing me. Waking up in middle of the night with cramps hopefully this will help.
Looks nice. Get those braces in ASAP, that door when open sags. My insulated door only had one, it's a big heavy door. Been installed for 20 years. A couple months ago I found a crack in the middle of one of the panels. I added 4 more braces for now. When the door gets replaced, I'll be adding a bunch more.

Looks great , I did the same one but in a 14x14 with the framed windows but my ceiling is taller so I added the high lift track to get mine closer to the ceiling and I did a side operator. Those springs sure were a workout especially those last few turns . The guy that delivered mine warned me multiple times to stay to the side of the bars because if it slips it could easily kill ya . He said his good buddy/ ex partner got hit in the head with one and is now permanently disabled . Shops looking great and congrats on almost 200k that's awesome!
It’s a journey learning on the job, but your frustrations and lessons learned are why contractors, door installers etc. charge the prices they do and most people will pay them. We do 3 kinds of work: fast, cheap, high quality- you get to pick two.
Too much tension on those springs brother. I would go about 4 turns less. Too much tensions will cause them to prematurely fail and smash down on when you are driving out. I've seen cars/trucks get totalled that way.
Outstanding job guys. Hey if you don’t mess up every once in a while it’s no fun. (At least that’s my excuse). That door looks great and the price was righteous.
My concern is using treated wood on your frames. Treated wood will eat metal that touches it. I used regular lumber, covered with 30 lb felt paper, then covering it with aluminum trim. No eating up the door, no rot on the wood.

I started watching you a couple of years ago when I decided to restomod my 2009 Chevy Silverado rather than spending over $100K on a new truck. I have been disconnected for the past year for a myriad of reasons. I saw the early planning stage of your dream shop which as a retired general contractor also interested me. My question is, what is code in Texas? You have windstorms and no snow. HMMMM?
It's amazing how much you can save with untrained, uninsured, free work from friends and family. When it all goes bad, you save on 7 less seats at the xmas table and birthday cards.
Door looks amazing and I am sure dry wall is not far off from going up. You are opening doors to some people asking you to help with shops at their house.
Nice. I only noticed one glaring mistake in your plan. HOA contracts suck. I made that mistake and had to move to somewhere that valued the junk around my shop. Ten trucks and four tractors in the yard. Never a complaint from any neighbors even though I am the first place after the church. I do my best to keep the front yard looking good. And one side. Unfortunately the church is behind my shop. After a few years someone planted some pine trees on our shared property line. Anyway good luck with the man shed. Pretty nice. Most folks don’t know how much work that was. When they chase you out you might want to go to rural farm country where we get r done with our toys.

Where's the home depot link for the door??
Why would you build anything in an HoA? Just move somewhere without one.
Why not just put weights on the side of the door so it lifts an closes 1 finger 🤞
do you have blueprints i can steal?
looking into building one myself

A weekend with good family/friends and some good old fashioned lets find out! Great to watch...very nice door!
What a dream Garage being build with your own hands that is so cool bro keep up the great videos
How we learn is what we take from our mistakes. Door locks amazing.
If I can’t fix it, it ain’t broke😀👍. You’re one of the few people left who provide for yourself. Great job!
Mad props bro I build everything myself as well but I have been in construction my entire life!!! Good job
You are a BADASS ! If it was easy to do, installers wouldn't charge so much to do. Revel in overcoming all that had to be overcome to achieve your TOTAL SUCCESS. MAD PROPS!
winding could be done with 1/2 inch 24 inch extensions bars for automotive tools and be used for other things after instead of those one use items

Absolutely amazing what you've been able to accomplish!!!
I can't believe you didn't rent a scissor lift for this step. It is looking amazing. Great job!!
doing a great job on the Hawaiian Build workshop.
Welcome back
Happy anniversary! appreciate your videos.
I watched like 20 videos of a guy building a garage. Love it!
This was my first. Seems like a great show! He captures the sense of adventure, discovery, and (yes) danger doing a big DIY project represents. Subscribed. 👍
Two steps forward something something... Nice work on getting that door hung bro! Shop is coming together! Getting hyped for ya!
For the interior, have you determined what you plan to use for the walls? My space I am using a PVC product so I can wash vehicles inside without worry of drywall or other surfaces. A couple of great products out there, both appear identical in specs but one was significantly cheaper in my review/purchase. Trusscore and Duramax pvc panels.
Happy Anniversary to you guys. And great job on the garage door
Freaking Awesomeness dude!!!
I start my drive to Alaska next Friday..
LOVE it up there!
make sure you add that trim on the outside of the garage door, That Should be a one by three that close up your door nice and tight.
You’re doing a heck of a job man! Keep it up!
Hell ya, brother! Looking great!
I can only imagine the sense of pride, building a shop like this has given you! 🤘👊🤙🇺🇸
Wow, what An Absolutely epic and Exceptionally awesome, Garage-Door installation!
Well done to you and your father (a.k.a. OG)!
Much appreciated! The OG always coming in clutch 👌🏽
Glad you got some much deserved time off. Looking forward to when you and Sarge are working on cars together in there...
Too much tension on those springs brother. I would go about 4 turns less. Too much tensions will cause them to prematurely fail and smash down on when you are driving out. I've seen cars/trucks get totalled that way.
Agreeed you are correct
Daz how braddah Chad! Cheehoooo!!! Throwing shakas from da 801!!!
I think it looks fantastic a dream build to be proud off
Slowly but surely!
Outstanding job guys. Hey if you don’t mess up every once in a while it’s no fun. (At least that’s my excuse). That door looks great and the price was righteous.
Congratulations on 200K. Almost.
Looking good. You should have put whole House Fans in the Roof to pump out the Hot air. Unless you're getting AC put in.
My concern is using treated wood on your frames. Treated wood will eat metal that touches it. I used regular lumber, covered with 30 lb felt paper, then covering it with aluminum trim. No eating up the door, no rot on the wood.
Always look forward to these killer videos!

Great vid...ballsy move. My hat off to you.
Looks great. I'm curious why you didn't install the window panel one course lower so you can see out of them.

All I can say is Wow.
Good idea going bigger with the door than needed but RVs often need at least 14’ doors because I’d a/c’s on top.
It's amazing how much you can save with untrained, uninsured, free work from friends and family.
When it all goes bad, you save on 7 less seats at the xmas table and birthday cards.
Once again you did an awesome job my guy, looking good!
Sick! I hope to build one one day too! Also going to Alaska in two weeks 🤙
I love these price comparisons videos, because your time is worth nothing!
Good job on that door!
Easy to pull a dent with automotive Prd type repair. Did it to same kind of door I had, which I got for a steel because of some hail storm dents.
You're doing a great job.
Just found your channel love it. Keep the videos coming!!!
You need to try LMNT sparkling water.....so yummy. Only 4 flavors (at this point) though.
Fantastic job
Really enjoying this series. Are you going to do some insulation, it would help with Texas heat and winter.
Now for the garage door opener.
