      Millions of people over the years have asked for a combined "Tower of Power," a 32X-CD in one unit. Had it been built around a unified memory architecture, they wouldn't have had the bandwidth and color limitations of the Genesis/Megadrive, and the rendering power (160,000 flat shaded polygons/sec) was almost the same as the PlayStation and could've handled almost any of the PS1 titles, but at higher resolution (320x224 as opposed to the most common 256x224).

    • @maroon9273
      @maroon9273 2 года назад

      @@MaxAbramson3 360k is the ps1 lowest flat shading polygons and it maxes at 500k. 390k to 500k flat shading polygons will be ideal for your system. Also, 648x448 resolution like the ps1 and n64.
      You'll need saturn dsp or similar but a higher clock speed, same MIPS for instructions (ie 71.5 MIPS) but easier to program (low level assembly and c programming). VDP and CPU needs to be faster like 28.6 MHz like the saturn. Including a lot of ram and caches.

  • @GetLostGames1
    @GetLostGames1 6 лет назад +24

    if the saturn was backwards compatible with megadrive,32x, and sega cd it would have been a videogame powerhouse that people would have wanted and would have definitely put pressure on sony offering a library of over already 1000 backwards compatible games at release. Think about that.

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege 6 лет назад +3

      It would have been a neat feature, but adding backwards compability would have made the Saturn even more expensive, making it even harder to compete with the cheaper PSX... With how cheaply you could get a MD2 at the time if you wanted one, I don't think it would have made it a hit at all.

    • @TheMamaluigi300
      @TheMamaluigi300 5 лет назад +4

      Ryan A' Gamers Lounge Actually i think the Saturn should have been THE Sega CD 32x. If they beefed up the 32x a little in clock speed, ram, and featured some more hardware functions, they could sell it in America/Europe for $/£200 for owners of the Genesis and CD, and all three units could work together as a new system.
      For example, the ram could be the sum of the 32x and CD’s banks of 6 megabits each, and they could function kinda like the dual channel ram feature in computers.
      They could also sell ram carts down the line to add to the available memory in games. Even better, they could also sell or bundle an equivalent to the Sega Trio adapter so you only need one power port for all three, *and* they could even sell combo units, much like the CDX and the cancelled Neptune, which will be great particularly in Japan as people can just buy the 3-in-1 variant, which would be likely under a new brand altogether, and they can simplify setup and still be able to play all the previous Mega-whatever titles without buying those units.
      Basically SoA/SoE can keep their Genesis/Mega Drive fanbase, and SoJ can start over with a new console brand.

    • @MaxAbramson3
      @MaxAbramson3 2 года назад +1

      @@todesziege Also true, but a combined 32X-CD console like the Neptune CD would've run all 1,000+ Sega CD games, 32X games, and still be competitive with the PlayStation 1 for overall 2D and 3D graphics, colors, sound, and capability. Many games designed for the 32X look and play as well as their Saturn counterparts, and a few are actually better than the Saturn release.

    • @maroon9273
      @maroon9273 Год назад

      @@MaxAbramson3 32x cd is very underpowered compared to the ps1 and n64. Small ram, cache ram and slower 32-bit clockpeed than the saturn.
      Better solution, sega should've made the neptune similar to the saturn design. Replace the vdp1 with its own vdp (unified vram with the vdp2 or indentical vdp2 background feature in Neptune vdp and adjustable framebuffer), use sh1 or Motorola 68k20 for cd/Sound, dual cpu set up or cpu (or faster cpu like NEC V820 series, PowerPC or m68k040) with a faster dsp (Same clockspeed as saturn cpu).

The cd lid is power opening/closing with LED accent lights surrounding it, enhanced audio processing with selectable effects, s-video output, MIDI output, karaoke with 2 mike inputs and effects, headphone jack. I scored one for a good deal because the power opening cd lid wasn't working and all it needed was a new belt.

I am going from my memory. But if I remember right. The Saturn was going to be 32 bit and the Jupiter would come out a few years later as a sort of premium version of the Saturn at either 64 or 128 bit.

    You can get a power supply with three jacks for the Sega trifector now. Sega should not have discontinued the 32x. It was apparently very intuitive to develop for and quite powerful for 2d and 3d (comparatively).
    Of course the 32x is better than the SNES. It has 2 23Mhz cpus as well as the Mega Drive hardware to layer above or below. The SNES has a measly 3.5Mhz cpu. The snes really is the basket case system of the 16bit era with it fuzzy stretched out games with loads of slow down and super fuzzy sound. The 32x had 8bit 44Khz sound whearas the snes used 4bit upsampled samples at a maximum of 32Khz and only 64k as I'm sure your aware.
    If the 32x was kept on the market it wouldn't have affected the Saturn's sales I don't think. Like you said, the Master System was for poor people like me but I never stopped thinking it was brilliant even after I upgraded. The 32x could have served the same purpose for the following generation and with the dual SH2's and new 15bit colour VDP, it could have delivered arcade perfect ports (from the previous gen at least) and some very interesting games, given at least 4 years on the market. If the cartridges and unit came down in price, I can see it being profitable alongside the Saturn.

    So was the schtick with Sega back then was to name Thier consoles after planets?

    • @todesziege
      @todesziege 6 лет назад

      It wasn't much of a stick since, with the exception of the Saturn, they were only internal working names. They were never meant to be the public names of the systems.

    I always wondered why you swing around random stuff in your intro, and hit the ground with tree branches...
    Is there any reason to that? A backstory perhaps ?

    Uranus is pronounced "Yoo-rain-us", not "Your anus". By the way, hey, THGM? Are you familiar with the JVC X'Eye? Like the Sega CDX/Sega Mega CDX, the JVC X'Eye is a standalone 2-in-1 Sega CD/Sega Mega CD/Genesis/Mega Drive hybrid. You should make a video about the JVC X'Eye.

    • @TopHatGamingManChannel

      It is only pronounced that way in new world colonies.

      I nearly procured a JVC X Eye in a used game store in Oklahoma once, however it was new stock and the sales assistant hadnt priced it up yet, so I wasnt allowed it.

      I have heard it pronounced "YIR-uh-niss" or "YIR-ih-niss", probably to avoid the other pronunciation.

    I didn't love the Sega Saturn. I bought one after saving money for months from my paper route. I had it for years and only ran into a few games I thoroughly enjoyed. A Doom collection (doesn't count, it was just Doom and Doom II), Street Fighter Alpha 2, and Ghen War. Ghen War was fucking awesome and so was SFA II. I had tons of other games and they sucked my ass. I don't care what anyone says, Virtua Cop was a shit game. Zero replay value and not that fun the first time around. Virtua Fighter 1 and 2 were only fun for a little bit, until the novelty wore off after a very brief period. It, to me, was more of a Stewart from MadTV kind of system; "Look what I can do!" After that, the games didn't really have any fun factor. Pretty face and no personality kinda thing. I loved Sega with a passion, and Saturn ruined that.

    SATURN = SATaN = SAURoN = Kronos = Time = Money = Adversary . SAURoN has one ring to rule them all, and so does SATURN.

    the saturn was segas wiiu and the master system was so poorly marketed in america that i myself had not heard of it until 2003.So what you said about sega in the past could have done what nintendo did in th 80s huh if you dont know you will not buy.

      Suggest it to the IAU as a name for a suitably numbered asteroid, see if they go for it. This is your chance to correct the disparity.

    > considers Neptune a "terrestrial entity" even though it's made of gas and ices (not sure Pluto counts either as, yknow, it's not actually The Earth)
    > first two minutes of the actual post-intro video is dedicated to shitting all over the Gamegear from a very one-sided Gameboy fan perspective, calling it a "nightmare".
    > Video title is about cancelled consoles allegedly, and the Jupiter, but by the point where I've paused it in disgust the latter hasn't even been namedropped let alone shown or discussed and you've talked almost exclusively about machines that actually made it to market and did reasonably well.
    Sorry, I'm out, this alone has cured me of any remaining curiosity about the other Sega systems. Please take some time to think about your life.
    Also if your GG overheats, you've got a bad one, ours never did that, and indeed it's the first time in all the 27 years since we got it that I ever heard of such a problem.

      There's all kinds of things that make loads of money when they really shouldn't. Getting big ad revenues doesn't mean your information isn't bunk. Just look at shit like Ancient Astronauts for a prime example.
