  • George Reeves will most likely be best remembered as television's Superman, but there was so much more to this man than that.

    That was a beautiful Tribute. In the early 60's I watched Superman all the time on TV. One day my sister, who is 10 years older, told me Superman wasn't real. I wouldn't believe her. I still tell her to this day she shouldn't have told me that!

      All I can add to that is that we must all grow up sometime... but not completely. I'm reminded of a line from Jimmy Olsen in "A Ghost For Scotland Yard," "... but Superman IS real." Jimmy should know!

    George Reeves was such a good actor. I wish he would have had more years. He had a car accident with a head injury a few months prior to his death. We can never underestimate the seriousness of brain injuries & the effects such as depression that can result.

    Great stuff. I was/am a big George Reeves/Superman fan. I do have a hard time with the idea that playing Superman on TV was such a terrible job, something he should have dreaded. It looks like it'd be endlessly fascinating and fun, with lots of adoring fans. Certainly if he'd lived, and we all grew up, he would've felt the true LOVE that would've come his way. And the fact, as you say, that he never denigrated the role tells me it wasn't such a bad gig. He was a good guy and a great Superman.

    • @jimnolt-TAC
      @jimnolt-TAC  6 лет назад +5

      I'm sure George was conflicted by the role. He intended to be a movie actor... he surely had the looks and talent. But then he wound up in an infant medium in a series with a small budget. Yet it did bring him fame and moderate fortune. To us, those who faithfully followed his adventures, he was awesome. He comforted us, gave us hope, and assured us that everything is under control. There was something in his manner... something in his look and demeanor that exuded warmth with a touch of humor. I do wish he could have lived a long life... long enough for us to let him know his real value to our lives. He was not just a cartoon figure on a small screen. He was George Reeves.

    Great video! Wish I was alive to see him in person at one of his many appearances. He was my first exposure to Superman that sparked the passion I have now with the character. Through reruns of the show in the 1970's , I was a 5 year old obsessed with recreating his hands on hip stance, the way he wore his cape drooped down in the back of the neck, etc.... and jumping up on my parents bed landing horizontal with just my front half off the side pretending I was flying (and in the exact hands position he took at every flight)

    The kids of the '50s were the first generaion to fear for the survival of the planet. I think the Creator, being a kind God, searched to & fro over the whole earth till He found a man with great talent and even greater heart. He took this man from the motion picture industry and dropped him into the new medium of TV. In so doing, He gave us the greatest gift of all, He gave us George, and for an hour a week, we knew we were safe and watched over. Thank you George. You are loved forever.

    I've always thought that George's vision of Clark Kent was spot on as a guy you'd want to shoot pool with on a Saturday night. For me, it was Clark's natural, quiet confidence that showed he didn't need to do the fumbling buffoon routine to hide the fact that he was Superman. Kent's being just another guy was understated just enough that most people wouldn't connect him to Superman. Thanks to George Reeves, Clark Kent was no punk.It is heartbreaking to no end that George didn't live long enough to see how genuinely beloved he really was. I miss him.

    George Reeves was murdered.His so called fiancé admitted shooting him.He broke off their engagement and being drunk she grabbed a gun he kept in a drawer and they wrestled over It. So, Mr Reeves is held in high regard -- to this day. Yes, the Ed Sullivan thing never happened. I believe the reference was in a Superman book I had. Showed George at home with guitar & white hair saying he would appear to sing -- during his hiatus from Superman. I'll try to verify bk. Thanks for id'ing Argentine Nights.

    I watched the “Adventures of Superman” all the time as a young boy in the 1950’s. He was my super hero and I remember pinning a towel to my shirt as a sort of make-shift cape and jumping off of my bed to simulate flight. My mom and dad downstairs would hear this thud as I landed on my bedroom floor and called up to me to see if I was okay. Just a child’s fantasy. I was in disbelief when I heard the tragic news that George Reeves had died. I loved the series and now after so many years have come and gone he still remains my one and only Superman.

      It seems we share many memories. One time I jumped on the bed and the wooden slats that supported the mattress gave way, and the mattress went to the floor. That evening my mother came up the stairs at superspeed... just like Superman. But George Reeves will forever be the best that ever was or will be.

    • @Brace67
      @Brace67 3 года назад

      @@jimnolt-TAC Yes, it seems we do. A small bit of trivia, the intro to "The Adventures of Superman" was, "Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings at a single bound" and then "Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman", came a voice-over intoning "Yes it's Superman, strange visitor from another planet............, etc". I know the entire intro by heart but it's the actor that did that introduction I want to mention. His name was Bill Kennedy and he had been a small time actor in a number of movies and also had voiced this Superman introduction. Where I saw him was as a kid growing up in Detroit, Bill Kennedy hosted a program which showed vintage movies, a few of which he had some parts in. He broadcast from CKLW TV in Windsor, Canada, which was just across the Detroit River from my city. I was also watching "The Adventures of Superman" at the time but had no idea until years later that he was the actor who voiced the introduction to my favorite program.

    • @jimnolt-TAC
      @jimnolt-TAC  5 лет назад

      David, as far as I've been able to determine, that never happened. Instead, it was a story Art Weissman created and used when George didn't particularly want to appear in costume. And there were instances when it was legitimately better that he didn't. If he was up on a stage, away from the crowd where he could better control the action, it was OK. But if he was close, especially to kids, he preferred to be Kent. Kids of course asked Superman to to do super things. Of course he could not. George cared, and it was tough for him to disappoint kids. He always worried too about what they'd thi k if a real emergency happened while he was there and he could do nothing to prevent it.

      Just to be clear, George Reeves didn't play the role of Jungle Jim, but he was in the Jungle Jim movie (1948) as Bruce Edwards.

    Excellent little bio. Sincere narration. Music under the voice appropriate. It's better than some bios from major networks. Lots of pics I never saw. There are 3 shots I wish you could add one day: George playing the acoustic guitar -- he was supposed to sing on the Ed Sullivan Show just before he died. One where he's appears as a Mexican bandito with a moustache looking dangerous. Pic with Burt Lancaster in From Here To Eternity. A movie he should have had a bigger role in.

    Great job Jim! Outside of George's appearance on "I Love Lucy", does any other footage exist of his guest appearances?

      On June 8, 1953 George Reeves appeared on an ABC-TV cerebral palsy telethon in Los Angeles. But I don't know if Dennis James was there too.

      None that has surfaced to day. Nor of his appearance on The Tony Bennett Show or Masquerade Party. I'd love to see those.

      I'd like to see his appearances on those tv shows..too..Mr.Nolt. According to the book:"The Great Television Heroes" by Donald F.Glut and Jim Harmon..George appeared on "Masquerade Party"..disguised as(Are You Ready For This?)A box of Kent Cigarettes(The show's sponsor).That same book also mentions that he was on"Super Circus".
