Totally agree with you, so expensive with basic equipment. I bought the same bike, upgraded the saddle and handlebar, saving up for better wheelset. Canyon Ultimate @£4800 comes fully loaded with all the bells and whistles, shame they are never in stock.
Just bought this bike and I think your review is pretty spot on! At it's original price, this bike would be an absolute no from a value standpoint, the marked down price though, albeit still expensive, made it a lot more reasonable for me (especially since local bike shop gave me a decent trade in valuation for my current bike). I'm not racing so power meter doesn't break my heart, but even at the discounted price I think it could have easily come with the carbon full integrated rapide bar. I'll probably upgrade to it in the future, but seriously, when a bike costs $6000+, has a top range groupset and even some aero wheels (albeit entry level aero wheels), what is it doing with a round alloy bar??? It would really not cost specialized much to include that on their expert level bikes, and might even encourage more people to buy them over the comp level. Like you said in the video, there's nothing wrong with there being incentive to go for a higher range bike in their lineup, but I also feel like the "expert" is a bike many of cycling enthuiasts would consider a top range bike as I'm not and many of us are not racing but riding out of enjoyment and passion. For that reason the price either has to come down (and has on the 2023 lineup so that's good I guess), or they need to include a few more higher end basic parts to make it feel like a no corners cut high end bike.
The round spokes are quite popular now as they're quite light. Pillar psr spokes on those roval wheels i heard. Lots of serious riders ride without power Meters because they're heavy and unless you're racing not really necessary.
Wait till you see the new SL8 prices. The prices have gone up again. People will pay whatever they say and still not enough stock. I just bought an SL7 30% off as in a sale and happy with how it rides 😜. Already swapped out to 380mm aero bars and Vision 40TR wheelset from a previous bike. I agree the round bars and wheelset were not up to scratch for the original price
Not sure how I feel about this review, there are some good points however. I paid less than 4,000 british pound equivalent, new retail price with a very small discount, I have a power meter. Maybe get SRAM group? I find the stopping power is terrible, and it is heavy. My only negatives.
Just bought totally happy. I come from a Bianchi xr4 more expensive and a say this is better . Just changed the wheels with ultegra c60 . Maybe canyon is better for the price but don’t get back your old bike in change… and tomorrow or in 2/3 years i sale the bike for sure keep a better price than Canyon … I went to the Specialized shop on Saturday and Monday I had the bike… as a was talking if I want to change the bike they take back the sl7 for at least 3000/2800 euros and with 1500 I can buy a new one..
Playing devils advocate, solely re handlebar width. For those blessed with an abundance of mountains and steeper grade climbs (perhaps meshing with the shallow section wheels), wider width bars could legitimately make sense, where the leverage vs e.g. 38cm wouldn’t contribute a comparable benefit.
4:46 actually, person who assembled the bike did a pretty awful job with integrating the cables. This could have been done *much* neater with cables (see photos over the internet). 44cm habdlebars is a joke, lucky for me the shop swapped it to 42 without any extra cost. And for last 12 months or so I'm a happy user of exactly same SL7 (model and size)
@@cyclingunboxed Indeed. When buying online, with a hefty discount most likely you don't have any customisation options available in a bike shop. Having said that - I still hate cable work in the bike you've presented 🤣
The weight you save on the little rotor is very negligible. Just 20 grams. Equivalent to about 1 gulp of water. For that 20 grams less you lost some significant breaking power. I'd say go for 160mm for both if you like descending at high-speeds.
True, the weight saving is very marginal. however, I have never had any problems locking up my rear with a 140 rotor. For me personally (may not be for others) at 80kg it is more than enough stopping power for the back.
@cyclingunboxed o ok..no doubt..im 6 foot 2 with a 61cm frame/100mm stem/42 handlebars/seat post 0mm offset ..the SL8 looks tempting but I'll wait till next year when more colors drop..im extremely happy with my 2022 S-works SL7 tarmac..this is my 3rd SL7 frame..plus the SL8 looks way too similar to the SL7...especially if I add the new 2023 roval handlebars that the SL8 comes with...peace.
hey brother! I have very same situation. I am 192 cm tall and riding 58 size now but thinking should I switch to 61. when I did a bike fit the guy sad there are no problems with my arms and they fit perfectly. I ride 110 stem. but he said my saddle is on a critical height and he might lift it up a little bit. I ride sl6 sport. do you have any saddle height issues? I also have long legs and not really long body and arms.@@cyclingunboxed
Whilst I do agree with a lot of your comments - fast service if problems go wrong - the bike is brilliant - good re sale value I do disagree with the cost for the components on an “expert” level bike And yes, someone could buy something else. This is a video pointing out the floors of this bike for the cost and it may help someone’s purchasing decision.

That is true! You almost have to buy the canyons on the day they are released!
It's been a long time since Specialized has been a good value-for-the-money bike.
Great critique, the spokes, the handle bar width... all the things you mentioned. My frustrations too!!! Like you read my mind.
It’s just not good enough for the price is it.

Agree. Knowing your power output is great, but not a deal breaker unless you are a pro athlete.
Yes. I prefer not having a power meter. I'm not racing, just having a good ride.

On 54 it is 42cm wide handlebars. Iam not the Andre Greipel type although Iam German.
powermeters are quite expensive and remember that bladed spokes dont make a huge diffrence but overall your review is spot on
Thank you! Yea I do believe bladed spokes are only about 1 watt but it’s such a simple and cheap upgrade for them
@@cyclingunboxed bladed spokes are cheap but the installation can be tricky for mass production.

Same issue with my Cervelo and the mahoosive 44cm cheap bars
Have you got some new bars to replace them?
@@cyclingunboxed yes sir I got the vision metrons but gotta get a 3d printed cone spacer so gotta wait a few weeks for that
Love it, it’s going to look amazing!

It is good when buying from a shop because most of them will change that for you. I think it could be an option when buying more bikes.
@@cyclingunboxed Indeed. When buying online, with a hefty discount most likely you don't have any customisation options available in a bike shop. Having said that - I still hate cable work in the bike you've presented 🤣
This is why I always build from frame.
As mechanic that works at a shop that sales Specialized, I realy can’t understand the wide handlebars. Crazy.
Really bugs me too!
I was told by a specialized mechanic the other day that the margins are low on the sl8 . 😅

hello this is the tarmac sl7 expert 2024 ??
This is the 2023 model. There won’t be a 2024 as it will now be the sl8
Your not wrong, but like you said, they're probably trying to get rid of old stock. Doesn't make it right though
thank god decathlon came out with the van rysel fcr and rcr to expose this scam
I would actually love to try one one day!
You're 6 foot 4 on a size 58??? I'm 6 foot 2 on a 61...
Might be due to my leg length. I have very long legs for my heigh so don’t need any more reach and just put the saddle up.

192 cm tall or 6ft 4

I still find it hard to stomach a bicycle priced in motorcycle territory
I fully agree
Ne les achetez pas…
It is a luxury and not a utility vehicle like a motorcycle would. That is why they can charge premiums.
Specialized have forever been rip off dealers, huge money for basic kit, go with cube ;)
about £4000
Taiwan sells 160,000 Taiwan dollars
Every single one of those rants is stupid. Especially the bladed spoke and handlebar width.
I assume you think this bike is well equipped for £7200?
