    Tarmac fanboy - it's clearly a great bike but this doesn't come across as being at all objevtive

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed День назад

      Unfortunately the best I can do is try and get across what the frame feels like underneath you and provide what the experience is like to ride the bike. If I wanted to be objective I would need some serious data collection that wouldn’t be viable due to changing conditions such as air temp, density, road surface, wet/ dry roads, gyro sensors for vibration and ride smoothness. As much as I would love some objective measures, they just wouldn’t be accurate. I will leave aero and stuff to Tour magazine.

    Looks ugly af tbh. The line is old and boring and the sniffer just makes it ugly af. And of course everybody who owns sl8 says it's better then sl7. They have to somehow justify they bought overpriced version of the same bike, just with ugly front

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed День назад

      Maybe they will make the sl9 more attractive. Could be part of their plan! In all fairness to the bike, as I said in my conclusion, it was better. Only marginally though and I would personally spend the money to upgrade. No denying it’s frame weight as well. I think that’s a big achievement for a bike that only measures 5w slower at 45kmh than the new aeroad on Tour magazines testing.

      That’s interesting and would make sense. What does DLC stand for? I’m not sure

  • @o.j5964
    @o.j5964 2 дня назад

    Is it worth to upgrade if I'm cycling at around 25km/h? I cycle mostly flat terrain and city like conditions. I currently have normal thin rims and I'm thinking of upgrading.

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed 2 дня назад

      I assume you would like to upgrade to a deeper wheel set rather than a fully fared disk wheel? If so, even at 25kmh it would benefit you. Not much and unlikely to be tangible however. On the other hand, a deeper wheel does look cool so aesthetically it should improve the bike.

      @@cyclingunboxed what rim depth/setup would suit me?

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed 2 дня назад

      For city riding I would personally go for something a bit lighter than can accelerate faster from lights. Something around the 30 or 40mm depth should be lighter than most 50mm deep wheels. For faster road riding I feel 50mm is the sweetspot for weight and speed

Obviously my sized channel doesn’t even register on their pecking order 😂 I am confident I can get my hands on the new aeroad in the next 2 months though. Canyon have been good to me. Pinarello on the other hand are another ball game. I have been turned down by them a lot! Try to contact them again every now and then but still get nothing. I’m going to say it. I think the more aerodynamic a bike is the harder it feels to lean over since at speed the air is basically stabilizing it. Just a very broad non scientific theory but I think the bikes that are easier to lean over are not as aero as their counterparts, if you equal out the geometry and such

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed 4 дня назад

      It’s an interesting thought. One I can’t comment on myself. I do know that your magazine has only found an about a 4 - 6 watt difference at 45kmh compared to an aeroad or madone (gen 7). I don’t feel like 5w is detectable by the human body but maybe it does for bike lean? I am still of the belief it’s down to the bike design, wheels and geometry

    Great review. I have just ordered an SL7 SW’s at a good price. In terms of the SL8 having an ‘Aethos like’ rear triangle and BB I think this might be an issue for some riders coming off the SL7 and going to the SL8. I own an Aethos and an out going Emonda SLR and I would say the Emonda accelerates more quickly up a climb compared to the Aethos. I put this down to some flex in the rear of the Aethos (btw, I ran both bikes with the same Bontrager Aeolus RSL37 climbing wheels). The Aethos has other benefits tho. Anyway, I guess I’ll find out once my SL7 is up and running and then ride my mates SL8 which he has on order as a comparison….

    it might seem like hyperbole but this review is pretty on point. i have both a Madone SLR Gen 6 and a Tarmac SL8 and i'll concur with essentially each finding, particularly the handling. I had been on the Madone for so long that i was it was almost an odd feeling to be able to adjust line on the SL8 when really attacking corners. There is a sensation difference in straight line rolling speed - the Madone "feels" faster but speed / power numbers don't indicate a shift. It's almost like how tires that are over inflated "feel" faster despite the opposite being true on most road surfaces. The SL8 is WAY less susceptible to being blown around in crosswinds, that may be a factor in the straight line feeling by not having to consciously correct the bike?

      I would say it's part of an attractive bike. As I said on the video, the Gen 7 Madone and Aeroad turn heads because well, they look good. I also believe that most people like seeing their bike as they ride past in the shop window (this is what I called it this category) . In my eyes, this bike is less attractive to look at than those others because of its overall shape. I would 100% argue that part of deciding which bike to buy is; is it attractive to you? does it make you feel good when you ride it? do you like to look at it when you pass it in your house? That's what the shop window category is about. does that clarify a bit more as to why its in my review?

    your mentioning the bb being "stiff" but I have heard that it is NOT stiff when putting down the power and has quite some flex. Us taller guys always have more flexy bikes than the manlets riding 54s and smaller due to the size of the triangles so if a reviewer is on a small saying its stiff that will not automatically translate to an adults size bike lol. Obviously I havent ridden one yet so cant comment but thats the thing im the most picky about, were riding road bikes here not full suspension mtb, there gonna buzz and vibrate a bit but the last thing I wanna do is ride a flexy bb/rearstays regardless how compliant it is.

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed 5 дней назад

      The fork for sure is definitely stiffer. It’s the only bike I have been on so far where I don’t get brake rub from fork flex out the saddle. The BB area feels like it works with you. If you go to my shark analogy on the climbing section it just seems to work with you. The rear does flex but in a positive timing and forward translation way. It’s very hard to describe but easier to feel.

      These ones come individually, but you can usually find them cheaper on bike inn

    Looks crap… weak organisation… and not sure you get that many punctures unless a lot of people had old soft tyres or someone had deliberately put tacks or glass down. Maybe try some Northern sportives .. hills, great feeds, great scenery, very well organised and very good value.

    I have found they are more likely to puncture, but use them for the space savings for spares.

      Definitely solid spares. 3 of these for the same space and weight as one butyl

    I just got the Supersix Evo 105 version. It's a great bike, but the tires are junk at best.

      Feels like most bikes need a tyre upgrade you buy them doesn’t it

      @cyclingunboxed I still had an almost new set of Conti 4000s in the basement, huge upgrade.

    I like these but the Silca ones are ugly and fragile and don’t come straight often and break when straightening. I got one from wheels manufacturing instead and it was half the cost. This is not a fault of your frame but Silca’s shitty QC which is odd as most of their products are top notch. Numerous people have had crooked hangers from Silca and also equally crooked replacements.

      No, it’s not. It’s the flash evaporation process that you want to remove the film from the white spirit. This video is out of date now. I have a new 2024 video with better options for stripping the chain that most people wanting to wax their chain

    Were pedals included? Not sure if i should buy clipless straight away with the bike or just buy it at some later point.

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed 10 дней назад

      Just like most bikes, no pedals included. You will have to buy them separately. That one I will leave up to you but it only takes a few rides to get used to them.

    Can I ask how the brakes were setup, was it Euro style left lever does front etc. or Moto standard for UK with left lever activating rear and right for front?

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed 10 дней назад

      If it is being shipped to the uk, it comes set up uk sides, so as you said, right for front, left for rear. If it’s shipped to anywhere else in Europe, they flip it

      @@cyclingunboxed thanks for your reply. I’m in Ireland and our default set up is Moto style same as the UK, I contacted Canyon Support today and they told me all shipments to Ireland will come set up Euro style which is a bit of a pain. They said it’s for logistical reasons I guess it could be some sort of Brexit/Europe thing where stock is managed separately?

    • @cyclingunboxed
      @cyclingunboxed 10 дней назад

      Ah, yes I can see how that complicates it. Would be a pain to take it to a bike shop just to swap the hoses. Would be good if on the order you email them and they set it up the other way round

      @@cyclingunboxedyes it would; I asked the support person that very squestion and they said they won’t be offering the service, I was close to pulling the trigger but this puts me off, do you know anyone in Canyon that might help a potential new customer 🤔

      Let me try for you. I can speak to the uk branch but I suspect this is part of the German side of things. It’s not too hard for you mr bike shop to swap them but it’s just an extra step on top
