  • "Spartacus" by Phantom Regiment, Reaction/Analysis by Musician/Producer
    Original Video: • Phantom Regiment 2008 ...
    Message from GWFrog (Reaction/Analysis Requester)
"Starting in 73 BC, the Thracian slave Spartacus became one of about 70 gladiator slaves who escaped and rebelled against the Roman Republic. Eventually, about 70,000 slaves entered the rebellion. A former Roman soldier, Spartacus was an effective military leader, but the rebellion was against Rome, essentially a losing proposition in those days. Only about 6,000 slaves survived to become prisioners and were then crucified.
In 1956, Aram Khachaturian wrote a ballet that follows the exploits of Spartacus, although the storyline takes liberties with the historical record. Spartacus is still one of Khachaturian's best known and most popular works.
In 1960, Kirk Douglass produced and Stanley Kubrick directed the Oscar-winning (4) film "Spartacus" with Americans as slaves and Brits as Romans. Dalton Trumbo (who was blacklisted during the days of the House Unamerican Activities Committee) wrote a script that was highly entertaining, but was Hollywood fiction.
First thing about Phantom Regiment-- up until the last couple of years it was two and sometimes three organizations. The drums and horns are the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle corps. The all-female colorguard is the Phantomettes Color Guard. In those years when some colorguard guys were added, they were the Rangers Color Guard (with Rangers being the corps' originally planned name---another story). "Spartacus" has all three units in its 2008 production. The Phantom Regiment is the Romans, and the Phantomettes and Rangers are the slaves. Phantom tells pretty much their own fictionalized tale with several rather spectacular killings. The music is:
    * Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian
    * Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss
    * Battlefield (from Cirque Du Soleil's KA) by Rene Dupere
    * Dance of Ecstasy (from Danses Fantastiques) by Loris Tjeknavorian
    * Toccata (from Piano Concerto No. 1) by Alberto Ginastera
The program was wildly popular with drum corps fans throughout the season, and it has been said that the crowd reaction helped hype the corps sufficiently to literally pull them to the championship. In Quarterfinals, Phantom Regiment scored 96.575 in third place behind the Blue Devils and Cavaliers. In Semifinals, they scored 97.675 and passed the Cavaliers to move into second place. In Finals, they scored 98.125 to top Blue Devils' 98.100 and win their second Drum Corps International Championship. The crowd's ovation began quite some time before the performance ended and continued for a while. "Spartacus" is generally considered to be the most popular DCI show ever.
Side note 1--This was the last DCI Championship held outdoors, and it was supposed to have been held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, but construction was behind schedule, and the champioships were moved to Indiana University in Bloomington.
Side note 2--When the young woman is killed and thrown to the ground, you can see her head bounce off the turf, and she actually suffered a minor concussion (not that any concussion is actually minor)."

I had 50 yardline seats, half way up. My vacation was recalled when 2 staff members left. Needless to say, I left that company next. As a Regiment Phan, I still will never forgive them. Karma is a b**ch tho. Found out the company went bankrupt 5 yrs later. 😂😂

Kudos to GWFrog for the great performance choice! What great memories this brings back for me... I am originally from Rockford, and have seen/heard the Regiment perform many times, always leaving me impressed and smiling. This was one of my favorites, as well.

I was in drum & bugle corps in the 70's and practiced sun up to sun down in summer and competed in DCI. it was great! I played trumpet from 4th grade through a semester in college. Now in 2 weeks from now my grandchildren (twins) are both entering high school where nowadays they drill just like D&B Corps. Thanks for the reaction this was great! I get goose bumps everytime.

I'm continually impressed by the different kinds of music and performances that you showcase on your channel, Jeff. And it doesn't escape me that many of these are put forth by your followers. It makes your reaction channel stand out from the hundreds (thousands?) that are out there. And I'm sure that for those who take the time to watch all of your reactions, that their musical knowledge has been widened. Mine has. As for this particular video - years ago I got the chance to go to a DCI performance. I think there were 4 or more units performing. Having played in my high school band, and having watched a number of university bands from my area, I certainly was acquainted with the difficulty of marching and playing at the same time, and doing both well. But the DCI performance I watched totally blew me away. I could not imagine the utter dedication these people needed to do what they did. And the precision I just saw in this video is way beyond amazing. May your reaction channel live long and prosper. (And BTW, have a great vacation!)

Jeff…..my drum corps roots go back to 1966, when I first marched, and became a fan to this day. In 1985, I had the opportunity to promote a DCI show, and it continues as an important stop on the tour. I was fortunate to see this show live when they were scheduled in my show, and it was incredible! To experience these corps live is a completely unique experience, the impact of the sound against your body is something not found in an electronically amplified performance. You really owe it to yourself to experience this in person, and to that extent, there will always be tickets to my show at your request. Thank you for continuing to expand the musical horizons of your viewers.

Had an opportunity to tryout for Regiment in the mid 90s. Decided against it when I heard the tour fees and expenses. One of the biggest regrets of my life. Chased the almighty dollar instead of the experience. If you’re reading this now, and you or someone has an opportunity to tryout, DO IT!!! The money will always be there. Making memories, not so much.

Weekend camps between January-April then 12 hour days, 7 days a week for up to a month before the season starts, then during the season 12 hour rehearsal days on non show days and 6-8 hour rehearsals on show days. They average around 20 shows a season including championships. Every
once in a while they get a day off for laundry and to relax a little, but those days are few and far between.
They are traveling the country by bus from June-August, World Championships are 2nd week of August, afterwards most of the members are back with their high school or college bands starting a brand new school year. November/December drum corps auditions then back at weekend camps come January/Feburary to start learning the next season’s show if they have not aged out and chose to march another season. During all of this a lot of these members are participating in winter groups as a part of WGI from February-April completely separate from their drum corps activity. The amount of time and dedication these kids put into their music education/experience is unbelievable.

Well Jeff I can't believe I'm seeing drum corps or what people nowadays are calling drum corps!!! I was very seriously involved with drum corps as was my family back in the late 50's through the mid to later 1960's back in NJ. My last years in drum corps were playing snare drum with the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights of Newark, NJ from late 1963 till late 1965. This was when the American Legion and the VFW were the controlling force behind drum corps and it was a very different activity. Sadly, DCI going into the 70's decided that they knew better and drum corps unfortunately turned into a glorified marching band with instruments and other totally out of place nonsense like what you're watching here Jeff. When drum corps was truly drum corps any young person with sometimes little musical experience could join a local feeder corps, learn how to play either a bugle or a drum, learn all about marching and military bearing and one day if they got really hooked like many did find themselves marching with the National Championship level drum corps like the Golden Knights. Yes, these folks who are in today's drum corps are very highly talented and many have music degrees. It's very expensive to be in this activity now and it bears no resemblance whatsoever to what the real and very exciting drum corps of the past used to be. I don't mean to sound so negative Jeff but I have very deep and fond memories of not only being a playing rudiments based drummer (I'm a member of the National Association of Rudimental Drummers) but being an instructor as well as a rock and pop drummer on the kit. Back in the early 60's I and Steve Gadd took some drumming guidance from the legendary drum instructor Mr. Bobby Thompson something Steve and I have talked about!! You're still the best one here Jeff so no hard feelings my friend!!!!!! Bob Love
