One thing that I like about Phantom is in most of their shows, they don't have all of those props and junk on the field. It's most music and motion!! I like that!
@@notvideosofothercorps6652 I mean to be fair, the props this past season were basically just platforms, they didn't do a whole lot with them. Only thing they did was move one of them forward at the very end. Now 2018 on the other hand is another story...
I just wish more people knew about DCI, it is in my opinion one of the greatest expressions of art, music, and precision all rolled into one. Love DCI!!!!!!!!
I agree! It would be so cool if drum corps international was actually international, and we had a “country” corps from each participating country and we designate a city just like the Olympics.
I honestly didn't pay THAT kind of attention to the symmetry of the drill. When i am watching a drum corp performance, I pay attention more to the music than i do to the drill.
ApolyonTheSoulRender Watching it a second time, i notice the symmetry is more in the second half of that closer. what i noticed was the brass and guard were ALWAYS symmetrical. The drumline didn't become symmetrical until the last quarter of the closer.
Natheniel Becken Well, notice that he does not have a mic. It's much harder to stay in tune playing with that volume, since he has to carry the entire stadium by himself.
Steve Bayt I know they've won before (2008, 1996), but I'm referencing the fact that the are nearly always in 2nd place or just a little bit under, except the past few years of placing low. Just saying they deserve more credit than what they get
Into The Light = quintessential Phantom Regiment. So tasteful. Gives me goosebumps every time. I don't care where the show placed. It was one of the best closers of all times
Ben Murray I wish they would use the phantom kick (the kneeling down version) more often, no one else does it. Unless they are waiting for a closer worthy of its use.
the 1989 show will go down in DCI history as the best show not to win the title...after 27 yrs i still getting chills from it,both SC and PR had awesome brasslines that yr.
I still fall for Into the Light. Was the first DCI show I've ever seen. Also the moment where I fell for Phantom. And the moment where I wanted to march Phantom. Sadly I will turn 21 this summer. Never made it.
Lisa, lovingly take your experience with you in life. Yes, of course, you will, it's a gift, share it. So fortunate to cross this time/transition to help kids and yourself going forward by giving them the DCI option vs. the "streets".
I’m 73 and was in a Corp when I was 17. Always regretted not auditioning for the Regiment . My enjoyment now is watching them on RUclips. Still raises the hair on the back of my neck listening to them. Go! Phantom Regiment!
I marched 89 and was on staff in 96. I can tell a lot of the people leaving comments are young. You guys seriously need to hunt around on youtube and watch the closers from 78, 83, 82... some of the older stuff. It was simply amazing. Not better or worse than the more recent shows, but certainly different. WAY more powerful hornlines with the G horns, but you can't really get any sense of that from watching video. You just had to be there to understand.
yes, I agree, I get the feeling that drum corps didn't even exist until the late 1990's. I was in PR in (19)75. Our show was pretty good even without dancing and theatrics.
Mark Bertram i understand you man i'm young but i'd like to understand the foundation that DCI was built on that way i can love the old and the new shows and understand the emotion thats put on the field no matter the time the show existed because for all these years they strive toward the same level of perfection and exellence.
1989 New World Symphony was and is my favorite of all from the Phantom Regiment. As an '89 Scout alumni, when we toured with them I couldn't help be mesmerized by this closer. The move at the end ... the classic triangle formation, drum break, and legs kick out ... pure awesome! There's a reason that move was duplicated so many times in subsequent years!
Yup. They have some serious power behind their chords. Although Spartacus, and A Defiant Heart both were their recent wins, tell you what Juliet and Into the light isn't far behind. I can still feel the air reverberating......
I love the ending of the video where it has close ups of some of the members. I marched corps in the 70's. In every era you put in all your effort, and leave it all on that field! Nothing better than getting that standing ovation for that effort!
I did not march my Freshmen year of high school. That year, one of my friends showed me the video of Phantom's 03 show Harmonic Journey. My life was never the same. There was a passion that erupted and music LITERALLY changed my life around. Marching band added discipline and i developed a love for the art more than ever before.
I'm from an earlier time. Marched 1975 and 1976 with Guardsmen, a corps also from Illinois like Phantom. I wasn't sure I would like drum corps when I joined (really hard work!) But competing against Phantom got me hooked! The power of those horns, drums and great color guard even then, was fantastic. Guardsmen was a fine corps that made finals 3 or 4 times. Sadly, they are gone. I love all corps, but there is a special place in my heart for Phantom. I still have a phantom t shirt from 1991 that says "Phantom - the best reason to march drum corps.
The shot at 12:53 gives me goosebumps. Not sure what it is about it. But Phantom Regiment coming toward the home side blasting 1812 overture in one long line with a classic 1990s camera catching the shine of instruments and clean uniforms is just awesome! I would have loved to have seen that show live!
wow!!! This is by far the best damn drum corps period. I was lucky enough to have been a part of this long ago when we first made DCI finals as well. So much respect to those member who followed shortly after. What talent from these young adults. SUTA The best thing I have ever done in my life was to join.
I saw the PR for the first time in hs in 1987. I got hooked on drum corps because of their show. they made a tunnel and went in one end with dark pants and came out the other end with white pants. Wish I knew the year and could see it again.
Pure opinion. 5th place in percussion doesn't get you 1st place. Tons of people think Carolina crown should have won in 2015 and they basically would have if they didn't get 6th in percussion.
ThePhantasticFule you do realize the entire judging system of any music activity is purely an objective opinion made by “educated judges” it doesn’t matter who won first or second in 89’ people will still have their opinions,(phantom should have won but that’s my opinion)
So cool you got to see that live! If I only had one segment that shows the power and excitement of drum corps, this would be it! I'm biased because I'm a big Phantom Phan. I marched with Guardsmen in 75 and 76. (A corps also from Illinois) SUTA!
Been following phantom since highschool in the late 90s. I love that they are the only Corp to do classical music every year. Sad to see their all black unis go.
I love New World Symphony, but Harmonic Journey's closer is tough to beat. I marched Magic of Orlando that year and I always looked forward to watching their show when I could. They are known as the darkest brass in DCI for a reason and the clumination of their closer was truly amazing.
I can humbly say that was indeed a SHOW! The mere expression on the dudes face in the Spartacus finale when he closed his eyes, drinched in sweat-he knew that his corps' fate was sealed!!
2008 is their most successful show, 2003 is outstanding too, obviously all of this is great stuff... But as a pure "closer" I just don't know how Elsa's can be topped. It really stands out.
08 & 03 were both very difficult years.. there were so many good programs.. Though I'd say that 03 was severely underrated for them. I still go to PR when ever I want a 'pure' closer.. :D
Elsa's was a signature piece that just begged to be a closer, and I think they did an awesome job with it. Phantom simply epitomized what an awesome closer is/was -- too many instances where I can point out "baby throwing" moments!
That hit in New World at 18:46 is just shear power. You feel that in your bones. Love this Corp to the moon and back!!!! But Spartacus certainly is deserving of Number one. Typical Phantom power, intensity and all out showmanship.
Just a couple of side notes... 1989- I will swear to this day they were the best corps that night and I think that was the most powerful, incredible, moving brass section ever. No, I wasn't in it, but I was there.
I read somewhere on RUclips that whenever Phantom does a kick halt the volume cranks exponentially. And in Juliet they do like 3 in the closer. I so wish I could have seen this one live.
Gotta be 03 or 08 for me. I love it when audiences get into the performance, and I definitely felt that. Never saw them live but just the videos alone bring me to tears
2011’s closer will always be my favorite. Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral will always have a special place in my heart cause it was the last song I ever played as a member of my high school’s band program, 4 years I’ll never forget
I love at 14:00 when those color guard in the back are DASHING to the front with those heavy big blue drapes to cover the horns. I marched corps, and yes, it IS an athletic activity!
Well, first off, I messed up and meant to say 2007! Basically, at the end of their '07 show, they pull into a block. Then, they play pretty much fortissisim (forte fortissimo) then they sprint across the field doing their normal Phantom Hell Sprints, while still playing loud as hell.
I saw 03 show live dead center as a roadie for spirit that year,, that horn line was in my opinion the only other brass line that was on par with cavaliers that year.. Harmonic journey was the crowd favorite that night..
This is so great! I am certainly not trying to "Correct" because we all have our opinions, but for me, 2003 tops any list! I wont ever forget the feeling listening that entire ending, especially those last chords. WOW! For me, 2010 is #2. AMAZING SHOW!!!
juliet and new world order are my personal favorites. something about the musical shaping and descending lines/features really stand out to me. and A+ for juliet’s story and how it still ties perfectly together with the impactful music
Every now and then I watch this video. I am always amazed that Into The light was not recognized as one of the best shows PR performed. It certainly should have placed higher than 4th. JD Shaw's book was beautifully written and Paul and Sandi Rennick writing was truly inspired for one of the most talented battery and front ensembles they have ever had. But the visual design of Myron Rosander IMO was probably prophetic. It's as if he was sensing he was near the end of his life and it is shown through Into The Light. The ending seems to be his final goodbye. When one thinks about the score it is as if he sensed the opportunity fo express his life through the music of drum corps.
All good choices, but I'd put 1985 in there. Those triplets at the end of Symphonie Fantastique are my ring tone. My favorite, though, is 2003. Saw it live, wept.
I like your choices! Pretty fair and balanced, in my opinion. I kinda frowned when I saw the '92 closer as part of the list, but after I watched it, I remembered how good it actually was -- '92 was just a stinker year for them. I probably would have added 1993 and 2005 to the list to rebound off a top 10 choice list. Props to ya!
In my personal opinion Juliet is number 1. Just the way the music, story, visuals, and emotions are all captured into one closer is simply spectacular. Gets me emotional every time I watch it. Not discrediting any of the other ones at all. They're all great!
phantom closer starter pack: kick-halts, someone dying, Bb Eb or F chord (pick one), standing ovation, zoom in on trumpet player crying
Someone dying lol
May be so, but they ALWAYS deliver and they ALWAYS excel.
I see no problem with any lol
Oh hell yah
⁰0
the crowd response on Spartacus should send chills down any ones back
The response to when they won that year is beyond crazy!
I lost my voice that night.
First time I saw it live I was transported❤❤❤
I thought On Air was a much better show.
Always

I honestly think 2011's closer was the best. Most badass version of Elsas Procession into the Cathedral EVER!
One of my favorite things about it is the old-fashioned symmetrical drill that pays a big tribute to old drum corps especially back in the 70's.
I honestly didn't pay THAT kind of attention to the symmetry of the drill. When i am watching a drum corp performance, I pay attention more to the music than i do to the drill.

Phantom Regiment: The best Corps to never win

DizzyGEICO in my opinion Phantom always has the most beautiful show. I tend to tear up at more than a few (definitely every single one on this list.)
DizzyGEICO They have only placed in the top three in 2012 and the rest have bottom around 8-10 since 2009
It's no less than stunning to think they never won when year after year it was such perfection.
I'm sparticus?
it aint phantom without the kick-halts
Into The Light = quintessential Phantom Regiment. So tasteful. Gives me goosebumps every time. I don't care where the show placed. It was one of the best closers of all times

Was it 83 or 84 they marched like 25 snares for 1812? I should remember... I was there in 84.
Into The Light has to be the most incredibly unique closer in existence. Would have loved to be a part of that!
To the men and women of Phantom, who move us so deeply every season,
Thank you. You are all incredible. ❤️ #PhantomForever

'78 is still my favorite PR show.
I was at the 91 finals in dallas. Great phantom show! Phan forever!!

First saw them in louisville in 75 our whole band became fans of Phantom that night.
The clarity of the chord at 16:30 rivals that of even modern Carolina Crown. Jesus Chris it gives me chills every time I hear that.
2010 Phantom is such an underrated show.
Oh, BTW, NO CORPS is as passionate or stirs passion like PR!!! SCV is a fairly close 2nd in this category though! IMHO
Tom Tindall agreed 100%
Crown still wins the power category for me though
I’d take SCV 🤧🤧🤧

As a classical music lover, Phantom Regiment is really one of my most favourite drum corps. They always play all classical music program.
Proof that 1989 was the best top 5 in the history of DCI.
I don't think there has been one better in any category than 89 honestly!

The 1996 bass drums sound SO GOOD
I saw the PR for the first time in hs in 1987. I got hooked on drum corps because of their show. they made a tunnel and went in one end with dark pants and came out the other end with white pants. Wish I knew the year and could see it again.
SCV did that in 1985.
89 was the first year of ever experiencing drum corps and it was love at first sight for PR
Always inspiring. I replay the video several times because there is so much to take in at once; I never get tired of the music
Thank you for including On Air. It is perhaps the most under-rated of Phantom closers.
I was there in 89... there is NO way Phantom didn't win Finals.
89 was vanguard..... ummm

I was marching with Cap Reg that summer. Didn’t know I was watching my future wife (whom I hadn’t met yet) perform her last show as a Phantomette!!!

Watching all these videos makes me realize how much I miss the mylar heads on the snares.
I got goosebumps on all of them my new favorite video LOVED IT!!!!
5:26 you get front row seats and you dont even clap... some people
still listening to this every day, thanks for the video!
All good choices, but I'd put 1985 in there. Those triplets at the end of Symphonie Fantastique are my ring tone. My favorite, though, is 2003. Saw it live, wept.
Best musical ballads ... such 'rich' composition. :)
Loved this! Great PR Closer! I'm still amazed by their wall of sound! Loved that brass sound! 2008 Spartacus they really owned it!
In my personal opinion Juliet is number 1. Just the way the music, story, visuals, and emotions are all captured into one closer is simply spectacular. Gets me emotional every time I watch it.
Not discrediting any of the other ones at all. They're all great!
