I swam with dolphins 🐬 many years ago on a group trip with friends. I remember being told by Handlers NOT to touch it in certain ways because they (dolphins) would believe we/I wanted a quickie. I didn’t take it seriously but refrained from getting too excited by the experience. However, this finally confirms why we were told what we did. Crazy! 😮
When I was in college, I had a weekend/summer job at Marineland of Florida (St. Augustine) as a software developer for one of the marine biology professors at the Whitney Marine Labs (University of Florida) across the street from the park. One of the graduate students was doing research on teaching bottlenose dolphins to "read". He would throw several toys into the pool, then hold up a whiteboard on which he would write symbols representing nouns and verbs describing actions the dolphins were to take. He invited me to watch during one of his training sessions. There was a female dolphin and a male dolphin in the tank. He did a few evolutions where he would write something like "Bring Ball" and then point at one of the dolphins. The animal would respond with the correct action, then swim to the edge of the pool to get a fish treat. This went on for a few minutes. Then the male dolphin got bored with the game. The trainer gave him a command. The dolphin picked up the appropriate toy, then swam to the far side of the pool, held up the toy, and started squawking at the trainer. The trainer called the dolphin to come to him. The dolphin grabbed the toy and swam at a high speed straight toward the trainer who was sitting at the edge of the pool. At the last second, the dolphin turned sharply and kicked a huge amount of water up with his tail, soaking the trainer. That was the end of the lesson for that day.
Yes, dolphins can be savage, but they also seem to be capable of empathy and understand when they have crossed a line. Unfortunately, we cannot ask them directly to describe to us what they feel or think, but there have been reports of dolphins acting shy after doing something bad; maybe they can feel shame too? Or even understand right and wrong? Maybe one day science will give us an answer.

I think a fun sort of side series you could have on the channel could a look at creatures from lore, legend, and mythology and discussing their potential physiologies along with how likely something with similar traits would be to actually show up in the real-world. And I think that sort of thing would be appropriate for the Halloween season, it's probably too late for this year but could be fun to see next year.

What is the difference between whales and dolphins? The phylogenetic tree at 1:40 it seems that either South Asian river dolphins and oceanic dolphins aren't dolphins or porpoises, beluga and beaked whales are dolphins?
With that explanation, Dufault, I guess you can say that dolphins are one of many creatures that we either underestimate or overestimate since we identify them with very noticeable aspects. As a result, we tend to forget that despite these facts, they’re still wild animals and because of that, their behavior is unpredictable. We would say the same for the orca since they’re the biggest species of dolphins and yet, we hardly, if not, never heard such cases about them attacking humans except those kept in captivity years ago.
7:37 I do like that you add that - while dolphins are an intelligent species, and sometimes engage in sketchy behavior - it's best to not put our human moral views on them. The Internet is always in danger of anthropomorphizing/projecting human morals onto dolphins as their sketchiness goes viral, which is probably harmful since they're wild animals at the end of the day and projecting human morals onto a separate species could probably mean some people end up harming them as a result (and our ecosystem in the process). It'd be like when wolves were vilified back in the day - and it lead to many wolf species being endangered and having massive changes to our ecosystems.
My friend has RUclips Premium. He downloaded this clip and said it's all in Spanish. I haven't seen his copy, but I doubt he would lie about that. Is speaking Spanish another of Danielle's many talents?
Since there are several species of dolphin it doesn’t seem right to lump them all in together. That would be like talking about all great apes, including us, as a homogeneous group.
Dolphins may have a dark side, but can we blame them? They live in the wilderness, in an ecology most vulnerable to human-made pollution, and they must fight to survive in a changing world. As much as we do to conserve species, human influence is just too destructive on environments, and the world is changing to reflect that. Until we get our act together, what right do we have to judge other animals?
