Those were detuned from a regular rm250 from what I remember every year they were in production. I remember you could use a rm250 head gasket from earlier years cause the rmx one was extra thick to lower compression

  • @clutchitsystems100

You you mentioned the power valve adjustment might be wrong. You really have to make sure that the power valves are not hanging down into the exhaust Port so that they make contact with a piston and rings. There will be an adjustment specification and the brake manual. And you need to follow what they say in that procedure. Otherwise if the piston and rings hit a power valve it's going to be ugly. More than that performance of the engine will suffer if the power valve is not adjusted properly.

The stock rings had way too much gap afterwards so I had to find oversized ones. it ran the best it ever had for a solid 2k more miles (I beat the shit out of it daily) and it cost me sod all to fix really. word of advise on those old suzuki motors. Suzuki spec'd the wrong ( short i think) bolt for the primary gear. it has a bad habit of walking itself out and chewing up the case. when the gear wobbles off, it also will tear up the splines on the crank. Its a good idea to pop the side case, and check the condition of that bolt and the cup washer. sometimes they were installed upside down.
the gear should have holes, so its a pretty simple mod to drill a safety wire hole to secure the bolt for good.

This bike has nothing in common with a 96 RM250. The engine is a detuned version of the old case reed RM engine from the early 90's. They had lower compression (thicker head gasket), stock pipes were restricted, smaller carbs, and even had a throttle stop to prevent the slide from opening all the way. They had much softer suspension, a generator stator(for lights) iirc a few other small differences. Suzuki basically ignored this bike from right after it's introduction seldom updating it. And when they did it was never to the extent the RM was. They did accept many RM parts and woke up considerably when those changes were made. At one point Suzuki offered a kit with the bike.

I bet he did not hone, I bet he home bored it, a quick hone breaks the glazing to created cross hatch, honing for an hour to try to remove scratches is uneven boring. I am unsure if Suzuki used chrome cylinders in 96, he may have took the chrome off, this cylinder may have to be sleeved, I don't believe a chromed cylinder can be bored, the metal under may be too soft, but I don't know that for sure. Yeah thats def. a worn jug. Time for a new one. I'm sure you could do a sleeve but my choice would be to find a new jug. A stock jug is plated and shouldn't be honed or bored because you will lose the plating. A piston moving inside an aluminum hole is going to wear out very quickly. So OEM jug, NEW OEM piston and rings, wristpin, small end bearing and all gaskets. Fix the power valve too!lol

  • @Mr.Bearded.Mechanic

Why do you use a caliper like that on the piston? That is not an accurate measurement. Anyway, as you say in the video, the piston and rings are way too small for that cylinder.

  • @takedeadaim8671

You really need some instruments to accurately measure pistons and honed bores. But the ring gap and thee way that piston flopped around I would say someone was in there without proper tools and then tried a stock piston in a honed out bore.

Always use a micrometer for pistons and a bore gauge in conjunction with a micrometer for your cylinders. Verniers are not as accurate as they flex minutely, verses a very stiff micrometer

Not saying on this engine, but my 2 stroke knowledge knows, to blow up in 5 hours it could have been:
    1) Running too lean
    2) Air leak in the carb boot (If it sucks in hair, the bike runs lean)
    3) Too hot of a spark plug (My CR85 calls for a BR-10, I run a BR9 but the bike came with a BR8 which is dangerous. WAYY too hot of a spark)
