34:46: That's actually perfect that you feel that. The studio HATED Kate's story, demanded Joe Dante cut it out, and he fought tooth and nail to keep it, feeling that not only was it a technical mistake to set up "Kate hates Christmas" and never pay it off, he felt that the story is exactly the emotions of the movie encapsulated. Kate's story is, on it's face, ridiculous. Any intelligent human being should realize that trying to climb down the chimney like Santa Claus is only going to result in serious injury or death. But if someone actually had that happen to them, lost their Dad because they tried that crazy stunt, and was standing in front of you telling you the trauma it caused them, you'd have to try and empathize with their pain. That's the movie as a whole, you just don't know at any given moment if what you're seeing is horrifying or hilarious.
Gremlins automatically know how to fix or tear apart machines. Back in the day, if a plane or machinery broke, the failure was blamed on gremlins. Bugs Bunny cartoons have a gremlin character.
The Gremlins were animatronic, and cost over $30,000 each. Security searched people's cars every day to make sure they weren't stolen. The original idea was to use stop motion animation for the gremlins. Special effects wizard Chris Walas wanted to use puppets. Someone at Warner Brothers thought it would be a good idea to use spider monkeys dressed in gremlin costumes. They tested this in director Joe Dante's office, and it didn't go well. For some reason, the test monkey didn't like being dressed as a gremlin, and it went nuts, destroying Dante's office. After the animal trainer got the monkey back under control, Walas said, "So, puppets?" When Warner Brothers received the first cut of the movie, they sent a note to Steven Spielberg and director Joe Dante complaining there were too many gremlins. Spielberg suggested cutting them all out and renaming the movie to "People." At least one of Phoebe Cates' screams was real. In one scene, a big cockroach crawled out in front of her, and they used her reaction in the movie. Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom inspired the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. These two movies were too violent for PG, but not enough for R. The original script was very violent, but Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg wanted to make it family friendly, so they changed the more violent scenes. Contrary to popular belief, there is no secret R-rated version of this movie. Near the beginning of the movie you can see a wrecked AMC Gremlin (back then, "AMC" stood for "American Motors Corporation," not "American Movie Classics.") These cars are scarce and collectible today, and are now seen as the beginning of the end for AMC. The company renamed itself "Jeep Eagle Corporation" in 1988, and merged with Chrysler in 1990, six years after the release of this movie. The dog's reaction on seeing Gizmo for the first time was genuine. It was truly startled by the appearance of the puppet. Keye Luke was 78 years old when filming began, but he looked so good they had to rely on makeup to make him look old. The movie at 12:06 is the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1956. The same movie shows up at 13:10.
Loved it. You're so lovely. Gremlins 2 (set in New York) is so much fun as well and basically just goes all out with all the more ridiculous shenanigans from the first one, and also has a bunch of meta elements making fun of certain parts in the original. It's really kind of the pinnacle of animatronics/puppetry/stop motion, very advanced stuff since it's from 1990 and everything had progressively gotten improved during the 80s. Then CGI slowly started to take over and that was the end of it, for the most part.
@NiaMakiReacts hehe. I guess you'll have to wait and see, but they are THE NEW BATCH!! You'll definitely find fun! I'm just a huge fan of Christopher Lee and his presence in all he does. Doesn't disappoint in this either. Great reactor and take care Nia 👍🏻
Fun fact: 1 in 100,000 Mogwai end up like gizmo which is why gizmo is so nice. The one the teacher had was nice and friendly but doing the experiments made the Mogwai angry which is why he ate. And then decided to kill the teacher out of revenge.

24:16 It has to be pure water because there's a part in the bar where you can see a Gremlin getting splashed with beer and nothing happens to him. Also in Gremlins 2 one of the gremlins gets covered in milk shake and doesn't multiply. So it seems it has to be straight water.
@@NiaMakiReacts another cool fact no one ever mentions regarding this movie, Sam Wing, gizmo's owner, is played by Keye Luke, the original screen Kato in the 40s green hornet serial before Bruce Lee's portrayal!
Given the way the dog attacked Mrs Deagle she had a point. I always loved the part where Stripe blows his nose on the curtains before jumping out the window. Mr Fuderman just used the term "gremlin" in a generic way that it was used in the war to mean something went wrong when there was no obvious reason. I don't think there was any racial component too it. The same way people use "bug" when their computer doesn't work properly, (that term came from a real incident where a moth shorted out a computer in a lab) From Fuderman's perspective, he risked life and limb to battle two countries who were invading other places. He certainly didn't expect that those very countries would surpass his own country and cause an economic downturn by causing local industries to shut down, him lose his job, and have their products sold back to him. Of course it also means his children and grand kids would be affected. Of course he should have been mad at corporations and govts for allowing that to happen. Japan and Germany had a lot of money poured into them by the US and Britain so their economies would be rebuilt after WW2 so they could make war reparations. I kind of wonder if soldiers knew how it would turn out would they have bothered fighting? I'd probably feel a bit salty too.
This wasn't the orig script. The orig script was much darker until Spielberg bought the script and changed it . For instance : the mother gets her head chopped off - the gremlins destroy the town & kill almost everyone - the gremlins go to a Mcdonald. And instead of eating the food , they eat the customers & workers - the old man talks about Gremlins during WW2 - in a 1940's Bug's Bunny cartoon he reads what a Gremlin is from a book. And you see the definition. The gremlin in Bug's Bunny makes another appearance in the 1940's.
Great reaction! 😊 I'm so glad that you decided to go ahead and post this reaction. And not wait until next Christmas. I love this movie so much! This is a Christmas movie that I grew up with in the 80s. And I 1000% agree! Gizmo is the cutest! 6:55 "Midnight? What timezone?" That’s that's always brought up during the reactions that I've seen for this movie. And it is a valid point. I'm guessing the timezone in where the Mogwai is. That point about the timezone is actually brought up again in the sequel. 17:54 - 18:57 Yeah. Billy's mom was a badass taking out the three Gremlins in her kitchen on her own. Gotta say, Mrs. Deagle's death is one of the best movie death scenes. She deserved it after the way she treated that family in the beginning of the movie, and especially for the way she was talking about Billy's dog Barney. The scenes when the Gremlins are in Dory's Tavern and the movie theater watching "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" have always been my favorite parts of the movie. 31:29 Gizmo saves the day! I VERY HIGHLY recommend the 1990 sequel "Gremlins 2: The New Batch". It's not a Christmas movie, so you don't have to wait until next Christmas to watch it. LOL! 😂 that’s funny that I’m not the only one that asked about the time zone. Just wasn’t sure that where dad got gizmo and where their home was were in the same time zone lol

Also, when Gizmo looks so disappointed when the new Gremlins "emerge", it was like "Oh no, not again!". Almost like all this has happened somewhere else, at some point?
Gremlin was just a term for something that messed up the works in machinery and clock works. He didn't actually think they were a real thing. Remember, he said they put them in his watch- way too small if he knew how big they were.
He also said there was a “real” gremlin driving his plow. During the war the troops would use “gremlins” as an excuse to explain anything mechanical that went wrong, just for fun. It’s a real life term, and this movie was meant to be a play on that, not suggest these creatures were actually harassing troops during the war.
when i was a small child living in Los Angeles in 1986, i was traumatized by the Christmas tree scene in this movie. i wouldn't go near them. and Christmas that year (1986), my parents and i went Christmas tree shopping. i was frantically crawling up my mom in absolute frenzied terror as we all made our way down the aisle on the outdoor market. the aisle was lined with Christmas trees on both sides 30 to 40 down. my dad couldn't understand what my problem was and was furious. my mom took the time to ask me through my whining temper tantrum. when she found out, she picked me up and held me away from the trees, slapped my father's arm, and said "I TOLD YOU WE SHOULDN'T'VE LET HIM WATCH THAT MOVIE!!!" i was 4 at the time. i couldn't help it. and yes, it bothered me soo much that i remember the event in great detail all these years later. i can still picture it in my mind. i think of this scene every time i hear any rendition of "Do You Hear What I Hear". i no longer fear Christmas trees for that reason. now, i hear they could possibly have unhatched Praying Mantis nests in them. so yeah... that's i "no" from me dawg. artificial trees for me from now on.

Gremlins is absolutely a great kids movie. I watched it when I was a kid and turned out….. just…. uh… fine? Pretty sure they all have to be taught to be nice like gizmo and seem like it happened more than once. Why else would the old man have gizmo in a cage 😊
Should have watched this in December
It looks like she did. You do know people can record and upload at a later date, right?
Yeah I watched it ahead of time and planned to drop it during December, but I was in Kenya and forgot my drive with the files
I also put a community post and poll asking if I should drop the Christmas reactions anyway and people said yes
