Every guy who grew up in the 80’s knows EXACTLY who Phoebe Cates is...
I was in my early 20's. When I saw this in the theater.
She was everywhere and all I think of ever since, is red bikinis, and The Cars "Moving In Stereo".
Or is it, everytime I hear that song, I think of........ Hmm?

The most rewound moment in the history of VHS.
My teenaged testosterone levels were off the charts whenever I saw her in that bikini back in the early 80s.
Phoebe Cates climbed out of the pool....and puberty kicked in!
These movies always hold a special place in my heart because my dad pulled me out of class when I was 8 by saying I had a doctor's appointment to take me to the second one and then took me out to lunch. I couldn't believe he did that for me, especially since he was a very busy lawyer.
Mother did the exact same thing for me, but for dawn of the dead
Yeah the mom is 100% the MVP of the movie; she sees gremlins for the first time ever and doesn't scream or freak out, but calmly grabbed a weapon, and proceeded to murder the fuck out of 3 of them by herself using nothing but a small knife and various kitchen utensils, the only reason she nearly lost is because one ambushed her, and even after nearly dying she was still calm and collected.
Also you should watch the sequel, it basically abandons all horror elements (which normally I would say is a terrible idea) and instead is more of a comedy-adventure film, and it works because the gremlins have a lot of character and it has some pretty decent jokes throughout
In the sequel's defense, the director intentionally and purposefully made it a giant parody of itself. Iirc he actually refused to do it until producers surrendered all creative control to him, as well as a massive budget.

They were aliens not demons.
The mom being abnormally more of a badass than anyone else was a last minute rewrite. Originally there was a scene where Billy [finds her disfigured] and Spielberg (who produced it) was like "You can't kill the mom, guys..."
Supposedly she was going to be beheaded by them. Book version has the Fuddermans dying via gremlin driven snow plow.
@@SilentZombie I chose to censor that for everyone's benefit lol. Yeah, the first script was pretty brutal. All of Spielberg's suggestions were to change the focus from Billy to Gizmo and make him more cute. Billy saves the day in the original cut, but they gave all the glory to Gizmo in the edit.

The mom is a G but in defense of her son the ones she went up against were unarmed while Stripe was the leader and used a crossbow chainsaw and a gun in their fight the mom is still awesome tho

I don't know what was sadder/sweeter, when Gizmo said "Bye Billy" or just afterwards when you can actually hear him say "Bye-bye woof-woof"
He makes the cutest faces to, the happy face at the beginning, the 'ow-ow-ow-ow-ow' face when he fell into the rubbish, the 'I know I know I'm cute' when the kid met him, the 'no!' face when Stripes jumped in the pool, the 'huh' face when Kate was telling her story, the 'wow-wow' face after the explosion, and in a deleted scene in the bank where they find that the gremlins dropped a clock on the bosses head and the jerk junior vice president guy who's always rubbing his success in Billy's face and keeps asking Kate out because he can't accept that she doesn't like him locked himself in the vault and became paranoid 'why do you want me to come out? I'm the senior vice-president now, you have to make an appointment to see me' Gizmo had a great 'Is this guy serious?' face.

Despite having the vocabulary of a 1.5 to 2 year old baby....Gizmo/The Gremlins were very intelligent.

The music, the actors, the dystopia, the incredible scene. Clarence Boddicker is still the original villain that made the kid me realize true monsters are humans.

The best Christmas movie. Horror, dark humour, heart, tragic tales about dead fathers in chimneys, what more could you want?
Your journey isn't over yet. You still need to watch "Gremlins 2". Seriously, they take the whole thing to another level.
The reason he doesn't like foreign TV's is because he fought in the Air Force in WW2, and a lot of Japanese electronic companies were the same companies that made the Japanese planes that tried to kill him in the war. My grandfather refused to buy anything made by Mitsubishi for this very reason.
The original script for the movie was a lot darker, with more people dying like the mom and the neighbor kid. But I am glad this was the direction they went.
To me this version makes it look like the gremlins were the victims. The first gremlin attacked the guy because he hurt it with the syringe. The rest of them only started attacking after they watched the mom go on a brutal massacring rampage and were trying to defend themselves. In the end its not confirmed that the gremlins themselves killed anyone.
The book is a little darker too and it has background on where they come from

Known fact, this movie along with Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom is the reason we have the PG-13 rating for movies.
Moral of the movie is to not abuse nature’s gifts. Has nothing to do with hating America, racism, or anything that you mentioned. Just enjoy a movie for what it is.
The "after midnight" rule is so annoying: midnight is the *start* of the day...literally every moment of the day is after midnight.

I love this movie so much. I watched it when I was a little kid, and it's still just as good as it's always been. The gremlins still look so gross and amazing. It's such a good silly little horror movie.

The Real MVP is THE MOM
Spielberg didn't direct this, Joe Dante directed it and Spielberg produced it. In the early 80s Spielberg produced a lot of films under his banner that were directed by other filmmakers, like Poltergeist(Tobe Hooper), Gremlins(Joe Dante), The Goonies(Richard Donner), and Back To The Future(Robert Zemeckis).
But Spielberg tended to be heavy-handed and insinuate himself into the direction. He was not a hands-off producer. According to Hollywood rumor , well-known , he basically acted as uncredited second director on "Poltergeist"
@@adgato75 Yes, but you forget that Spielberg wrote Poltergeist. It was based on an original script that Spielberg had written called Night Skies, which was intended as a sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, about a family in a farmhouse being terrorized by aliens. The studio didn't want to make the movie, so Night Skies got reworked into E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Poltergeist, but Spielberg's contract with the studio prevented him from directing both movies, so Tobe Hooper was hired to direct Poltergeist. But it was still Spielberg's film.
@@44excalibur Right. I don't think he was involved to that extent on "Gremlins" , and didn't mean to insinuate that , if that is how it seemed. But he still had some input. Such as vetoing the mother dying. Instead the scene was rewritten to have her be a badass.
@@adgato75 Well, I think the problem with Gremlins was that it was originally intended to be a horror movie. Yes, originally Billy's mom was supposed to die, and he was supposed to return home to see her decapitated head rolling down the stairs. Gizmo was also supposed to become a gremlin and be the lead villain. I think the studio felt that it would be way too dark for a summer blockbuster and asked for the script to be lightened up.
I'm guessing that the only input Spielberg might've had was the creation of Stripe. In the original Night Skies script, the leader of the aliens was named Scar(for a scar on his face), and he was probably the inspiration for Stripe. There was also supposed to be a friendly alien who befriends the youngest son of the family in the farmhouse, and that friendly alien was the inspiration for E.T. and Gizmo.

I remember when i saw the film with my friends in the cinema, we were all around 10-12 yrs old. At the scene with the 7 dwarfs we all started to sing along with the Gremlins "Hi Ho Hi Ho.....". We all loved the film soooo much and watched the film later on vhs dozens of times again together.
The tractor guy isn't racist, he just doesn't like imported goods, he is American made guy.

Always loved the music from this film, it perfectly captures the odd combination of a Christmas tale with a horror movie.
That "Do you see what I see" Christmas song still freaks me out because I associate it with this movie (I watched it at a young age). Last Christmas I ran into the grocery store for milk and I almost ran right the hell out when that song played 😂🥺😜 🎄🎶

I never understood what if I travel from one time zone to the next does the rule change? what if I move to japan does that midnight apply now? What about day light savings?
The guy who wrote this movie went on to direct the first 2 Home Alone movies and the Harry Potter movies.
In the original script the gremlins had killed the Dog and beheaded the Mom.

I feel like they managed to make the Gremlins remind us of giant spiders, snakes, and rats, the three house invaders that give people the hibbie jibbies.
I think Abbi was spot on when she mentioned it was about television. So often the residents and the mogwai are shown watching tv. The first batch of gremlins seem to personify the worst behaviors in human children (throwing tantrums, lying, bullying, eating too much sugar at night). Then at the bar they exhibit the worst of human adult behaviors (smoking, gambling, murdering, flashing), things they could only have picked up from the tele. It also seems to particularly piss off the Chinese store owner: "You let him watch television!!" Kate also criticizes those who think Christmas is the way they show it in the movies, when in reality is a tragic holiday.
Then, again, Gizmo did save the day by driving like the fools he watched on tv. And most of the G's died at a movie theater. Considering what happens in the sequel, I have to think there's something to it.

Its so crazy to me that there are still people out there who've never seen Gremlins. Its been on the telly box every other Christmas for the last 25 years, lol, and its a bona fide classic 80's movie.
Made my friend watch this for the first time a week or so back. SUCH a good time.

Fun "easter egg"...Mr. and Mrs. Futterman, AKA Dick Miller and Jackie Joseph, were reunited in this film from when they co-starred in the original film version of "Little Shop of Horrors" in 1960. Also, Dick Miller was featured in every one of "Gremlins" director Joe Dante's films up until Miller's death in 2019.

Oh yeah, there’s plenty gremlins in my house. A small army of them on my bookshelf. I mean they’re all plastic and 7” tall while the smaller mogwai’s are about 4” tall. The NECA figures, all of them.
Speaking of NECA, One of their little mogwai figures, an offspring of Gizmo, was given a name, Haskins. He supposedly turned into the gremlin that Billy’s mom threw in the microwave.
That part at the end, when Stripe dies, I hate how they deleted Billy’s scene when he pulled the second cord given more light to finish off Stripe. If you look closely, you’ll see him start to turn around to run and pull the second cord. That’s why he magically warped from standing in the middle of the room to standing by the wall from one scene to the next. They could have at least given us that scene in the “deleted scenes” on the dvd or blu-ray but no, they didn’t 😠. The reason they did it is because they loved gizmo so much and they wanted him to be the big hero that they decided to make it look like he and only he killed Stripe.

Glynn Turman (once married to Aretha Franklin) is the black “scientist” in the movie. He played in the movie Cooley High and was later on the Cosby Show spin-off A Different World.

the theme song was made by stepping on a bunch of cats, no, but they did sample a cat noise and put that into a keyboard that can take any sound and put it on all the keys, there was one of those in the movie, Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Mogwai is a Chinese word meaning "Demon" btw. And the Futtermans survived and appear in the sequel!
While the movies never explain, the novelizations explain that the Mogwai were made by alien scientists to be the perfect pet. However, the side effects were that they were sensitive to light, multiplied with water and only Gizmo(so far)was benevolent, while the rest were troublemakers and the project was abandoned.
I knew “Mike” from Breaking Bad best from Beverly Hills Cop when I was a kid.
