'Let's patch': Dub Techno from scratch / Ableton 10 [LP#01]

  • I've been asked: "How do you start a new project, program sounds for movement?"
Starting from scratch, blank project, no presets, only Ableton devices/Analog - hopefully gives you an idea. This is an explorative approach, nothing particular in mind. Goal: discovering something sonicly interesting that moves over time. A foundation for a potential new track.
What I'd like YOU to do:
The video contains a lot of uncommented tweaking. If there's a part you find interesting, have any questions about or would like to hear more thoughts: let me know in the comments! I'll answer them in the next video. And: there are NO stupid questions.
Here's the project file (contains a version from before and after the break):
    files.abraum.d...

Thank you very much Ronny for doing this video. It is a fantastic presentation of the process and things have finally clicked for me, I knew that the approach to the synth sound should be simpler than I thought, considering the technology available at the time of making rhythm & sound records. Thank you for letting me in on the process.
In my opinion this video contains by far the best meditations on dub techno sound.

      Thank you very much!
Did you watch my session in which I said I want to deliver the final video about compression? Well, that escalated 'a bit'. So did 'building a little studio'....
I'm aware that I seemed to just vanish. And hope that the almost 24 hours of content I produced here (check the 'live' tab) keeps you engaged in exploring new ideas.
In the end, I'd like to provide educational content in a sustainable and scalable manner for everybody alike. Whilst avoiding the treadmill of YT's algorithm.
For which I'm developing my own curriculum. Not exactly the simplest project :) I'm curious to find out if that approach is ambitious or rubbish.
If anything, I wish I was able to convey the value of persevering against half-assing one's decision making in music production so far. And that I'm eating my own dog-food here.
      In the meantime:
stay sane and safe - and don't stop creating!
      Cheers
      Ronny/rktic

@@theVAULT909 Take aways for me: 1. Spend more time with the source of the sound and don't just slap a bunch of effects on, it's lazy and boring. 2. The EQ3 thing. It's really nice and subtle. 3 Use even more noise. 4. Add way more small movement to everything. 5. Your workflow.
Thing is, a lot of what I learned is something I kind of already knew but seeing you utilize the stuff is very helpful. It kind of opens the doors that you already knew were there but didn't really know how to navigate to in a way that sounds good.
What more? Just in general you doing your thing, really. I wouldn't necessarily worry about being super functional in these videos, just do stuff and talk about it in long form. I liked your examples to like the Maurizio stuff. I like the science of how and why things work so feel free to geek out as much as possible. More how and why - less self criticism :D
My biggest problem is getting stuck in making loops and not tracks, so that's something I'd be very interested to see how you do it. Also low end theory.

Please be assured: I forget things, too sometimes. Especially when I'm too focused on getting a result too fast. There's so much happening at the same time while making music.
And to me, a bit of self criticism is part of finding out and reminding myself about the things I forget. Hope it's not cringe-worthy though ;)
Thinking about how to tackle the loop to track issue.

Absolutely fantastic content. I have followed every step from the beginning (and almost) to the end, and it really helps me try out someone else's workflow when making music. (I have never even considered touching session view before, now I love it!) I have one million questions to ask, but here is my first: To my understanding glue compressor is a musical compressor that adds warmth, and that separates it from the native Ableton Live compressor. Why did you use the glue compressor on certain tracks, and the native compressor on others? I am just learning about compression and it's really fascinating to me!

    • @theVAULT909
      @theVAULT909  4 года назад

      Hey Rhewn,
      thank you very much!
About the compressor choice here: tbh, I didn't give it that much thought.
In general, I prefer Glue comp on everything that's a complex signal. Like busses, or individual tracks with spatial effects like delays and reverbs on it.
Imho, the stock comp isn't suited for that. Too digital and hyperactive behaviour with complex signals. On the other hand, when it comes to individual drum hits, that kind of sound can be beneficial.
Keep in mind though, I tried to restrict myself to Ableton devices only. If that wasn't the case, you wouldn't see me using the Stock comp at all ;)

    • @rhewn1572
      @rhewn1572 4 года назад

@@theVAULT909 ah okay I understand now! So glue compressor works a bit better with complex signals. If you were using any compressor you wanted for a complex signal in this track, what would you use?

@@rhewn1572 Depends on material and the type of flavor I'm after. Currently using Novatron a lot for almost everything. Bit of Fairchild on the two-buss sometimes. 1176 occasionally for bass. NI Solid Buss, Mjuc, Battlecomp Vintage here and there as well. It's often a gut choice.

But i struggle with the drums in these style tracks, and trying to make them fit after i have worked on the chords and musical composition. its not the programming of the drum patterns, but more the eq, transients, space, and character of the sounds. and then making them fit with the music, any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks again Ronny

Ronny Pries also ich find es sehr gut dass es uncut creative process ist , man kann richtig gut einsteigen was du denkst und vor hast - auf der suche nach details justiert sich das Gehör ... war überrascht als auf einmal der groove da war OHNE drums ...
      echt super video , danke
bin allerdings kein riesen Fan von Ableton only , also gerne noch mal ein Video mit magnetic und allem drum und dran

I didn't set this up on OSX yet, so unfortunately, can only guess. I'm sure there's a good tutorial about this on YT.

    Hello.
Nice Dub . Which Musical program
do you use? And what hardware is Minimum? I am addicted of Dub , so, like amy addicted, I will try to fabricate my own Dub drug though....Thank You for being
    Inspiring.

      Hi Mark,
this DAW is Ableton Live. Bitwig is also very suited.
Any halfway recent computer/laptop will work. Don't worry about that.
      You're welcome!

Is there a reason you have a VU meter open? Also is it on your master?

Traurig

Hey man, really love your tutorials! Really learned alot, very thankful for you to take time out of your day to do these highly informative tutorials. was wondering if you could do a video where you can recreate the synth from Chords & Memories by BDTom. The sound first happens at 0:26. Any help you can give that would be great!
