An Air Canada Airbus A220-300, registration C-GUPL, performing flight ACA466 from Toronto Pearson International Airport to Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport. After departure, about at 10000 feet, pilots declared PAN-PAN, reported strong fumes in the cockpit and requested return back to Toronto. During the approach the crew requested to stop on the runway 24R for inspection by emergency vehicles.
As it was reported, the strong smell was a result of de-ice fluid ingestion.

I appreciate whomever did the graphics for this video synced up the aircraft and the shadow on the ground so it touched down right on the 1000' markers.
Hey ATC, you should look into UA750 flying from CYYC - KIAH (July 11 2022, ~21:.35UTC is when the first take off is performed). The flight had TWO diversions back to back and was escorted both times to the gate by fire trucks and met with an ambulance. I work at the airport and noticed the plane landed 3 times in one day which was weird for a flight that comes once in the day.... I guess the fire trucks where pretty noticeable too
Great Video like always btw!
I always enjoy these videos and hearing the professionalism of the airline industry. Thanks for your great work!
Very professional, the pilots, the ATC and the video!
I lose track of how many "pans" I say, so I just say pan for a good 30 seconds straight to make sure I got enough.
LOL - Well, hopefully it's not a phrase you need very often...
His was a textbook "urgency" call: "Transmit a distress or urgency message consisting of as many as necessary of the following elements, preferably in the order listed:
If distress, MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAY-DAY; if urgency, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN."

Just in case you really didn't get the joke:
Panpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpanpan!
@@A.J.1656 Sometimes sarcasm doesn't translate well in text form! And...I was able to read that in well under 30 seconds! :-)

You have to say "pan" like when Ben Stiller is being interrogated for saying "bomb" in the movie Meet the Parents.
Pan-pan-pan! Pan-pan-p'pan pan-p'pan p'pan!
Lol
Very professional. Good on you Air Canada and ATC.
Always glad to know safely back on the ground. Kudos all around for great comms!! Nice presentation and graphics!! 👍✈✈👍
Amazing ATC and pilot comm
That sucks that the radio frequency (122.67) was not available to hear. However, the video was great, and thank you. Is frequency 122.67 restricted?
Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged
Thank YOU for watching, Ged!
Thanks for these great videos. I always enjoy them and I like hearing professional people doing their job, well, professionally lol.
I like hearing the ATC!
Good quick desicuon taking. Nice vid ATC
Great graphics too!! Can't wait for the next video!
Coming soon, stay tuned!😉
Great job as always!
As always simple and excellent
Love your vidros!
Departure saying “roger” after every read-back is quite possibly the most annoying (and Canadian) thing ever.
I noticed that too, and don't think I have ever heard that on previous videos like that....is that any kind of standard ATC process that most don't follow, or what is up with that?
Haha, except you cut off the first bit so it’s just “GER”
I know a song that'll get on your nerves, get on your nerves, get on your nerves.
I know a song that'll get on your nerves, get on your nerves, get on your nerves.

roger
Man Air Canada can't catch a break lately
You should look at Nolinor (OWG) mayday 7700 from YUL to cuba diverted to KJAX
It would probably be a good idea to change the video title to say "fumes," not "smoke." They never said anything about smoke, just fumes in the cockpit. If they had smelled smoke in the cockpit, it would probably not have been a PAN-PAN, but a MAYDAY and they've have been trying to land immediately. You don't mess around with potential fire on board.
Also, for those who fly (or are controllers) in Canada, is that "roger" after every readback standard procedure up there? I don't think I've ever heard that before in American or European ATC comms (or even previous Canadian ones that I've heard, for that matter.) Honestly, seems like it would get kind of annoying after a while. Personally, I think I prefer the model of "assume your readback was received and correct unless ATC corrects you or reads the instruction again," but maybe that's just because it's what I'm used to.
I saw this aircraft at yul
The smell of burning de icing fluid is norm shortly after take off. It goes away rather fast
It shouldn't be. Means a whole bunch of extra fluid went into the engine.
I thought policy was to take bleed off of whichever of the three sources is farthest from the spray, and after completion, running up the system a couple minutes before selecting source to blow out as much as possible.
Why does the controller keep transmitting "roger" it's not even properly audible
Bro why Air Canada always catching on fire lmao
What's with the brief transmissions after every readback by the aircraft, which was transcribed as "Roger"?
That is acknowledging that "message received"
@@HP.0 To acknowledge the readbacks doesn’t seem to be common practice. The second (tower) ATC didn’t do this.
It's a Canada thing.
I guess it’s the quickest, least distracting way to let them know you acknowledge (even though it isn’t as we all know single words or terms that can be used to confirm receipt of transmission that doesn’t require a lengthy response.) I guess they just opted for this, no harm. Rather they all focus on what’s important.
It seems like about a third of approach and en route controllers do it in Canada.
Could you *please* make the airplane and it's travel trajectory more easily visible? I consistently have to play "Where's Waldo" in order to locate both of those items on your videos. I often have to search for Waldo again if I look away....
What is pan pan pan?
quite often they just click the mic instead of saying Roger
Yeah, the double mic click seems a lot less annoying. Even that seems like it would get annoying after every readback, though.
*"Uh" count for this one: 4,157.*

Should not have legal weed in Canada and this wouldn’t happen, ruining flights and young men
Flight crews are not permitted to use cannabis within 28 days of operating an aircraft.
Ah, yes, I can see the Canadian rampers now:
*to tug driver, while casually leaning on terminal beside alley*: "Hey man, if you need some deicing fluid, I know where you can get the good stuff."
I work in emergency. I have done so far over 20 years. Alcohol wrecks far more lives. But it is legal and indeed celebrated.
