Making an oak and steel dining table

- For this project I used 8cm thick oak planks. I started by marking the cuts on each plank not paying much attention to cracks and knots as I planned to fill them up with epoxy later on. After cutting on a band saw, each oak plank was planed to a flat surface on 3 sides and to a right angle in between each side. Planks are then planed down to thickness of 66mm and fingerjointed. For glueup, I used d3 acetate glue with open time of approx. 20 minutes at room temperature so we had to work fast. The glue was left to set over night. After removing clamps, board was left to rest for a few days before trimming and planing on a kuka kr150 cnc robotic arm. on the under side of the table top, I milled a groove where table base will be positioned later on. For filling up the cracks and knots, I used clear epoxy resin with black pigment mixed in. After the resin was set, excess was sanded off and a layer of clear resin was applied to whole surface to fill the pores. Excess was once again sanded off and 3 coats of clear matte water based varnish was applied. First two coats with a brush and the final one with a spray gun. In between the second and a third coat, the surface was fine sanded by hand with 400 grit sandpaper.
Legs for this table are made from 40x120x4 mm square tubing. All the pieces are cut to measure and then welded together into a zigzag shape as seen in the video. Small plastic adjustable legs are added to protect the floor surface from scratching. all welds were sanded down using an angle grinder and holes are drilled for the screws that will attach the base to the table board. Base is then painted in two coats of color. First is the base coat and the second one is two component polyurethane finish. After drying, table base and table top are joined together.

This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Zivot odvede u cudnim pravcima..
When I see a notification for another Lignum video my mood changes instantly for the better. Just one click away from more amazing magic. This is the perfect complement to the Spiral Table build. They should be kept together as a set. You nailed it again.
:D Thank you so much Michael! I'm glad you enjoy my videos and my designs!
this format of the table support was fantastic. beautiful designer. congratulations.
Thank you Gerson!

The crossing point where the legs come together is perfect.
Beautiful design - Great and beautiful craftsmanship
I always enjoy your style of videos. Too much chit chat nowadays. Fantastic work. Well done. I especially like the inset for the base in the bottom of the table top. Great idea.

Great job Sir! Keep posting.
Fascinating video to watch...learn something from you every time, my friend. I love watching your use of the tools that you have...some day when I think of a project that is beyond the scope and scale of what I'm capable of...I'm going to send it your way!
Thank you very much Stan! Send and I'l see what I can do.. :D
Nice!
Loving the attention this piece gets. Also like the way you shape & glue the wood pieces together.
Thank you Peter!
Using chainsaw to trim down the table edge then ask the bot to finish everything. I like your way, the most simple and the highest tech, nothing in between :). Thank you for sharing. Take care and Stay safe during this crisis time. :)
Thank you Nguyen, I'm glad you like it. Simplest ways are usualy the best.. I hope this crisis will end soon, stay safe also my friend..
Another incredible build. Makes me want to build one on a smaller scale. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much! :D

Thank you Burton!
Un vídeo muy interesante y sobretodo didáctico, carpintería, construcciónes metálicas, con soldadura MIG pintura, barnizado,el resultado final es excelente,un saludo y por supuesto un gran like desde Narón, Galicia ( España)
Beautiful table
Love that you chose to go with black resin to fill the cracks. Great contrast with the light color of the oak, and ties in well with the legs. Of course... you already know that since you designed it that way, lol. I also really dig the modern, almost 80's style vibe the shape of the legs give off. That ultra-contemporary look mixed with the natural warmth of the wood.
I do have to admit.... I kinda miss the classical music. 😋
Thank you Bruxxus, I'm glad you like the design! I must admit, I miss it too but It's getting really difficult to find some good classical recordings without copyright lately.. And unfortunately, RUclips refreshes their library with new classical pieces really rarely.. I'l have to start using classical pieces I already used..
@@lignumchannel That's such a bummer! Even though the music is public domain, I suppose that doesn't count for the actual performances. :(
Even without the classical music, your videos are still some of the very best out there! :D
You guys are next level!
wonderful job
This has to be one of my favorite project from you. Beautiful, Wee done !!
Modern and beautiful!!
First time I’ve seen epoxy used as a base coat. What a great idea! I’m guessing you get a super smooth durable finish that does not look or feel like plastic.
BEAUTIFUL JOB, BEAUTIFUL TABLE‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸

😆😆😆 I thought so too.
Yeah... I see what you're saying. But in most shops there would always be that one guy to be always glad to give you a crash course on any of the machines and their workings. I know this because I am one of those guys. And this is world wide! It's like a brotherhood for us. We welcome people that have any inclination towards technical stuff. You just have to ask and if you truly like the trade, show interest. Easy! I still don't understand it all but I went along with it. And it paid! Big bucks ands big xp+. But at the end of the day, it's all hard work and you'll feel that on your joints and also on your bank balance. You just have to have the balls to be a man at the end of the day. Either good or bad. Some are good some are not. I have almost 20 years in the trades and so far I can honestly say that its worth it. At least for me. Your experience may differ. You do you.
lindo trabalho, parabens. aqui no brasil nao tem uma oficina tao aparamentada.puro luxo.
Super nice 😊👍
I love this project, the end result is simply incredible. What I love more than anything about your channel and work though, is that for all the crazy talent and amazing design elements that you go through and need really fantastic tools for, you still use the angle finder from Lidl, along with other tools. I love how you have such professional machinery mixed in with what some would consider "junk" or "trash". Keep up the amazing videos!
Craaaaazy tableleg design! Thanks for sharing this 10/10🥰

Love it
Awesome table!!! What is that joint called used to connect the individual planks of wood together to form the table top? How could you get that effect with at home tools?
