Love the use of the Kestrel from FTL for the transport ship. Always felt that if just scaled up a bit size wise, FTL ships would fit surprisingly well with Rimworld's style.
Hotdog.. the man with no desire to kill, fends off hordes of invaders while watching all of his close friends succumb to raiding parties and Insectoids one by one.. the man who dresses in black, is a lone wanderer, finding someone in need of protection. The issue I ran into when initially playing this game is that this version of vanilla Rimworld without any mods or expansions, there was no field medic tending option. I also didn’t know at the time that you basically had to set up a special zone where a medical sleeping spot is created so the medic actually sets them there and tends to them. It was very janky back then AND I was not good at this game when I originally recorded this hehe
It’s crazy the game writing the story so perfectly especially after the bug infestation with everything crazy and people dying you could really feel that hoff was angry at hotdog for not being able to fight and letting his friends die
Ah, the classic infestation. I lost my biggest colony to one a while back. Actually it was the guy using an incendiary grenade launcher to clear the infestation that did it…
Ah yes, the series that I’ve been wanting to go back into and finish for over 2 years now. I will get back to it sometime soon though! I have had big plans for the next video and I think it is finally at the point where I can work on it (animated scenes have been a big blocker for me since I want to do this in a very particular way but haven’t been able to up to this point)
I really like the narrative style of the video! Narrating the game like a story is really entertaining. I just want to give a few tips real quick: 1. Fertile soil is darker then normal soil, while stony soil appears to be gravely. Fertile soil grows crops 30% faster, while stony soil grows 30% slower, unless you're growing potatoes, in which both ends are less effective. Check the bottom left of the screen for more info about a tile. 2. You can have multiple researchers. It'll effectively double your research speed, which is very important for getting gear for combat if you're playing on a high difficulty. 3. Walls are the best cover, then sandbags, then barricades. You should try to always have your people behind walls, although this does take a lot of building and planning. 4. You don't need to recruit every single colonist. Try to recruit only those that have the skills that you need or will need soon. For example, if a farmer died, try to recruit those with a high plants skill. 5. If someone misses a shot, there's a chance that shot will hit another person within a 1x1 grid where they were aiming. So spreading out colonists is useful to avoid misses, and to avoid friendly fire. Friendly fire cannot happen with your own colonists within four tiles. 6. Sterile tiles (steel tiles, silver tiles, and sterile tiles unlockable with research) increase research speed when placed inside research labs, decrease infection chance inside hospitals and reduce the chance of pawns cooking meals that give food poisoning when placed inside kitchens. 7. As you're entering melee combat often with ranged units, you should know that ranged units can shoot while in melee, but not at enemies directly next to them. So, if pawns shoot raiders next to them instead of gun bashing those next to them, it'll clean up raids faster. Now for some more cheesy tips. These aren't fun for everyone but you may as well know you have the option: 1. Colony wealth. So raids are based on how much total wealth you have, thus meaning being too rich means you get attacked too much. This means destroying expensive goods makes sense. However, to some people this is very much not fun, and can be mostly ignored unless you're on a 500% threat scale game. Keep it in mind if you're being attacked too much. 2. Pawns cannot stand on sandbags, barricades, chunks and other objects like those. Basically, you can make your funnel more expensive by putting sandbags on the edge of walls so they can't use it as cover. This is getting into killbox territory (areas which exploit pathfinding and other Rimworld mechanics used to kill raiders very easily), which some players hate, and others love. Do whatever you find fun of course, but if you find minmaxing defenses fun, give it a try. 3. Nutrient paste exists. I honestly hate it a lot, but some people swear by it, and for good reason. It is however much more efficient then cooking, and pawns eating it cannot get food poisoning. Useful if you don't have a good cook, don't have a lot of food, or don't care enough to cook meals. 4. Setting work priorities in the work tab is very useful. Setting everyone's bed rest to a priority of "1" means that they'll always rest while they would be working to recover from injuries, or gain immunity from diseases faster. Lowering some priorities means less people will do less work of a specific type, but also that will mean a few people will do specifically more of one type of work, thus gaining more experience. For example, having only a few crafters will make the few more highly skilled, and thus produce higher quality items. I hope these help! Enjoy learning too much about a silly little game! Rimworld is one great game that has a very barebones tutorial. I'd recommend watching some other RUclipsrs if you want to learn even more. Knowing niche mechanics does come in handy. Have fun!
Thanks for all of the advice! This was actually one of my first full playthroughs of the game and I learned a lot since then. I like playing where it isn’t fully min maxed with kill boxes because struggling gameplay definitely makes for a more engaging story haha
I want to see more of this. I want to know how Hotdogs Story goes on. A few of his friends got kidnapped. Imagine finding them and get reunited with at least a few of his friends. :O
Were you using any mods here? That bit in the video where you dug through the other hill and "exposed" the other side? Did that expand the map? Or was it because it was all a mountain or something? And was the map size bigger than normal too?
This is actually vanilla gameplay without any DLCs - just good ol fashioned classic Rimworld. I don’t remember what map size I picked, but you are only shown what is revealed to you. Because that other valley was completely blocked off by a mountain, it wasn’t shown since it was hidden. While I was strip mining, it opened up and revealed that area. Hope that helps!
I hope to put together the followup sometime soonish. I’m going to make a big shift in how I approach Rimworld content with animated scenes to go with it. If you see my last community post, there is a gif that gives an idea of what I’m trying to accomplish
Wow this is a masterpiece, i just started playing the game myself and i found this video entertaining and helpful! i would love to be in one of the videos
Thanks so much! So this was the original vanilla game before any of the expansions were released - I originally recorded this series years ago and decided to consolidate it into a movie and update the music and touch it up slightly. I hope that context helps!
Suggestion for a challenge, go download the alpha gene mod on the workshop (requires the biotech dlc btw) and create a germline in which there is the gene unstable mutation (catastrophic), then try to survive, good luck bc it ll activate up to 10 random genes for 1 day, can be good, can be bad, can be horrible, I have played once with the more calm version of the gene, pretty chaotic

I think I like the story aspect of the game plays. But as for switching out heater and air conditioner, you don't actually have to because if it reaches the temperature it wants, then it wont be in high operations anymore. In other words you can leave AC and heater on in the same room, throughout the year and it will kick on what it needs to, and kick off when it doesn't need to.
Wow, you randomly appeared in my feed. The narrative was compelling. The impending disasters were relentless. Can you pinpoint a moment when you thought it would all go to hell? Was it your difficulty settings?
I'm so glad you randomly stumbled upon my video :) I think I can give you an exact moment when things went from good to an unrecoverable bad lol. The infestation was the beginning of the end. I never recovered from that.
im new to rimworld, i am doing one of my first successful brutal and naked runs at the moment. Made the mistake of trying to recruit 3 people at once, with only one person. I was struggling for a minute, then right before i recruited one of them, a warg bit my big toe and another off as i ran away to my trap! god i love this game
@PixelRookieOfficial you've got this. My biggest tip is to make sure that you tend to infections and diseases immediately and keep the tend time up, if you use medical kits then you'll live most of the time. I watched the first hour and commented then, I'll finish the rest :)
A couple of tips to follow so you don't lose as many pawns, not trying to offend the author of the video! 1) If someone is in a critical condition, don't rescue them to the hospital, just draft your doctor and right-click on the patient to tend them right away without medicine. 2) Bugs can take down your average pawn 1v1 in melee, so you can't let them spread out and melee all your pawns. Instead, your base should have 1x3 "doorway" chokepoints here and there. You should have at least three melee plasteel-longsword-wielding specialists, the rest must be equipped with high-armor-penetartion weapons, such as Heavy SMG or Chain shotguns. Once an infestation emerges, put your pawns at a nearby chokepoint with three melee guys being in front and see the meatgrinder work in action (could use some grenades as well, but you need be VERY careful with them). Therefore, I'd highly suggest not leaving any overhead roof tile outside of your base as there's probably no chokepoints there and that plus the growth rate of the hive could mean game over for you. If I'm not mistaken, 3x3 pawn placement works best because they won't shoot each other accidentally in a formation like that, unlike 4x2. 3) 24:34 when making a killbox, don't let your enemies have any cover, wall off the entrance leaving a one-tile opening (in a direction they can't shoot through!) and fill the opening with sandbags so they can't hide behind a wall and shoot. Make your defensive line as far away from the entrance as you can, considering the range of the weapons used. Make sure your pawns are always behind a wall + covered with a sandbag on a side, that gives them maximum protection. 4) If your colonists are bleeding likes there's no tomorrow, make sure one cleans all the blood in the hospital, in my experience, they never get infections when I do that. It may also be a good idea to have a dedicated doctor that never fights so they can patch up the rest easily.
This was my first full playthrough of the game, not that I am much better now lol. I am glad you enjoyed the video though! Sucking makes the story more dramatic anyways lol
I have developed a habit of doing a blood drive every so often so I could have some hemogen on hand to transfuse the badly injured. It has saved many lives.
Hey thanks so much! FrAvatar was definitely one of the MVPs. I always like how he held the line with the infestation and was probably the reason that the rest of the colonists didn’t get swarmed

I loved it. Kept me very captivated with your story. Please do this again.
Thanks so much! I’m hoping to get back into more RW storytelling soon :)
One of the best story Rimworld vids I don't need lots of editing to find it entertaining
Dude, this video is literally ART! 👍👍👍
Thanks so much! I feel like Rimworld can make for some great (albeit, tragic lol) stories when it’s not full blown min/maxed. I’m glad you were able to enjoy it!
I want a fravatars daughter origin story. What caused her to turn down such a dark path? What kind of father was he? Could things have been different if he was a better father? Was he redeemed by sacrificing himself to the bugs?
Love the use of the Kestrel from FTL for the transport ship. Always felt that if just scaled up a bit size wise, FTL ships would fit surprisingly well with Rimworld's style.
They really do fit nicely together and I’m glad you enjoyed its brief appearance haha
Hotdog.. the man with no desire to kill, fends off hordes of invaders while watching all of his close friends succumb to raiding parties and Insectoids one by one.. the man who dresses in black, is a lone wanderer, finding someone in need of protection. He comes in the time of need and becomes the Man in Black
Oh my, I like the sounds of this arc ;)
@@PixelRookieOfficial that was my first thought of what you were going for at the end mini scene there :)
@joshchristenson26 you just might be on to something 😏
I love that cinematic with the FTL ship... very nice reference
Thanks man! I feel like FTL’s ship aesthetic works nicely with Rimworld :)
really nice series
interested in how hotdog's story will turn out
wondering if we get to know how the last 2 will be featured again or not
asking if I could possibly be in the series
I’m excited to share hotdogs story, but it will take place years after the events of this series. I also need to go in and finish my other WIP series called The Last Hope 😅
The quality of this video is much better than ones i've seen from youtubers 100x your sub count. A definite sub from me, cant wait for more.
Oh why thank you! I have another series I’ve been working on called The Last Hope, but I had to put it on hold while I worked some issues out with animation plans I have for adding to it. I think I just might be close to where I can continue working on it though!
Loved the video! If you have room aboard, I'd love to be a colonist next time!
16:56 17:24 he buried his father next to the bandits they killed lol! I got to admit this was fun to watch, a great story narration added makes this video more engaging.
im very excited for part 2 of this! nice video
Just the thumbnail hypes me up, the video, is even better!
Awwww yeah 😎 I’m happy you enjoyed it!
Quite depressing end tho, But great job!
This honestly broke my heart
Rimworld makes for some sad stories when you aren't very good at the game hahaha. I hope you were able to enjoy it though!
@@PixelRookieOfficial I did but when will you continue hotdogs story? Did he basically become the man In black?
@@Ploant I have big plans for Hotdog in a future story but I am trying to learn legit animation to tell the story in the way I want to. I hope it will be worth the wait
At 13:35 Where the fallout hits you could just build a roof over the intire village and to the mountain and you are completely safe
Hoffs story was just stellar and heartbreaking
Yeah, most of the characters had an unfortunate end. Hoff was definitely a good one until the end
@@PixelRookieOfficialDo you think your gonna make more movie-esk play thrus also love your videos your original series made me get into rimworld
Love this narrative rimworld video. Subscribed bc of it
Thanks so much
Hotdog.. you lived though so much and lost so much he is a man of many tales .. stay safe out there hotdog.. all the ones who passed away are all ways watching over .. hopefully we all get to see you on your adventures.. stay safe stay strong…
One day hotdogs story will continue 😎
Why did I watch this whole thing without even knowing what this game was
You have a great way of story telling !
Well that is pretty high praise! Thank you very much for the kind words :) more videos will come soon
I literally love this I thought it was gonna be boring at the start but then it became super interesting
Nice to see this again. It has been so long, I forgot everything that happened
I forgot you died and Heath snagged your fiancé for himself lol
@@PixelRookieOfficial The story would be so tragic if it was real. Randy Random seems to really hate love
The amount of people who died from not being cared for by a field medic is legit painful to watch
@@PixelRookieOfficial draft em man
Well, yeah I get it now lol. Clearly I didn’t back when I recorded this though :P
It’s crazy the game writing the story so perfectly especially after the bug infestation with everything crazy and people dying you could really feel that hoff was angry at hotdog for not being able to fight and letting his friends die
10:55 Nooooo Swamplordddd
:(
I love rimworld community so much. There is no wrong with playstyle. Everyone so supportive. There is always a room for improvement ❤️
Ah, the classic infestation. I lost my biggest colony to one a while back.
Actually it was the guy using an incendiary grenade launcher to clear the infestation that did it…
Reminds me of 'The Last Hope' series. Looking forwards!
I would like to be a colonist next time I’ve been watching you for the past year and you’ve done a great job hope you make it to 1,000,000 subs
Make sure I’m a farmer one or scientist
I really like the narrative style of the video! Narrating the game like a story is really entertaining.
I just want to give a few tips real quick:
These aren't fun for everyone but you may as well know you have the option:
@@PixelRookieOfficial true, everyone does like people on youtube suffering. hope you continue to enjoy the game!
Oh I adore the game. It’s just a matter of finding time to play it for videos when I have a bunch of projects I’m working on haha
somehow this is the only video of rimworld i love
@@PixelRookieOfficial thankyou for replying
I’m just honestly surprised that Hotdog, the colonist who is incapable of violence, managed to survive for so dang long
It pays not being part of all of the violent encounters I guess haha
We need part 2!
I hope to put together the followup sometime soonish. I’m going to make a big shift in how I approach Rimworld content with animated scenes to go with it. If you see my last community post, there is a gif that gives an idea of what I’m trying to accomplish
"We don't talk about New Raleigh 1.0"
New Raleigh 1.0 was a.*liiiiiiittle bit* of a mess lol
RIP fravatar he was the goat 😭
This effort in this video is amazing
Wow, this was really good.
Wow this is a masterpiece, i just started playing the game myself and i found this video entertaining and helpful! i would love to be in one of the videos
Hey man loved your video, also are you using a previous version? If yes, why?
Thanks so much! So this was the original vanilla game before any of the expansions were released - I originally recorded this series years ago and decided to consolidate it into a movie and update the music and touch it up slightly. I hope that context helps!
@@PixelRookieOfficialoh alright, thanks man and keep up the great videos
Suggestion for a challenge, go download the alpha gene mod on the workshop (requires the biotech dlc btw) and create a germline in which there is the gene unstable mutation (catastrophic), then try to survive, good luck bc it ll activate up to 10 random genes for 1 day, can be good, can be bad, can be horrible, I have played once with the more calm version of the gene, pretty chaotic
I love these movies truly a highlight of my days
I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!
oh man this is just too good
Leon was there so Short but was still my favorite member. He really decided to just die for some random village
He thought he could save them. Little did he know that I was behind the wheel :(
i love this video, its so well put together, it tells a story with artworks. such a cool idea!
Hey thanks so much! It was a lot of fun to make and I wish I had more time (and skill) to draw art like I did for this series. It is tough since the art took so much time to put together. I'm glad you liked it!
@@PixelRookieOfficial it must have been really tough but trust me, it paid off! i love it, i dont comment on YT videos, but i just had to comment on this one. i really enjoyed the video, it felt really thought through and it looked really well put together. hopefully i will see some of this concept more from you, in my opinion, the artwork gave the story life
I LOOOOVEEEE the way you story tell. You have me feeling connected with the colonist and sad when someone died. I also loved the drawn pictures too. I just finished the video and you convinced me to get the game XD
I’m so glad you liked it! The good news is that the next big DLC is coming out in TWO DAYS so you couldn’t have picked a better time to play. I hope you are able to enjoy your own stories while playing through the game! Remember… losing is fun :)
Lol yeah I learned this afterwards like a big goober. Glad you enjoyed the story and managed to suffer through my poor gameplay decisions hahaha
Wow, you randomly appeared in my feed. The narrative was compelling. The impending disasters were relentless. Can you pinpoint a moment when you thought it would all go to hell? Was it your difficulty settings?
I'm so glad you randomly stumbled upon my video :)
I think I can give you an exact moment when things went from good to an unrecoverable bad lol.
Naked brutality is really hard for a Rimworld pleb like me haha. May you recover from you toe injuries and find great success!
@PixelRookieOfficial you've got this. My biggest tip is to make sure that you tend to infections and diseases immediately and keep the tend time up, if you use medical kits then you'll live most of the time. I watched the first hour and commented then, I'll finish the rest :)
eyyy I remember this. Great to be back in the story again.
FrAvatar let’s gooo. I forgot how awesome your character was in this series too. Held the line with the infestation like a real pro
God damn how much Hoff had go through. Like every day he has something thats wrong with him xD
That's an amazing video! Could you please share which mods you're using???
This is pure 100% vanilla Rimworld. No mods, no expansions
@@PixelRookieOfficial thanks 🙏
How are you so bad yet so good at the same time? big fan man! keep up the good work!
This was my first full playthrough of the game, not that I am much better now lol. I am glad you enjoyed the video though! Sucking makes the story more dramatic anyways lol
1:07:28 What the-
This game, man. I can't stop laughing.
FTL ship at the beginning is just hilarious
I have developed a habit of doing a blood drive every so often so I could have some hemogen on hand to transfuse the badly injured. It has saved many lives.
Dramatic series! But you really need to place your turrets in the front! Or you can just place your tamed animals at the entrance of your base!
So, Hotdog became a Man in Black.
How fitting, after they were saved (temporarily) by another.
this is insanely good, Fravatar was my favourite character
Hey thanks so much! FrAvatar was definitely one of the MVPs. I always like how he held the line with the infestation and was probably the reason that the rest of the colonists didn’t get swarmed
anybody know the seed this is on?
The seed is called “blackjack” and it is from a vanilla playthrough without any expansions
Just started the video and i see a FTL reference! You have good taste, i have high hopes for the video 😄
Subscribed! I’m working hard to create a compelling “Rimworld Movie”. I love this style, I’ll share it soon!
This story was amazing next you should try 8 years
Thanks so much! I have learned a lot since originally recording this footage so I could probably survive that long now hahaha
