This is awesome! We did this piece my junior year in high school, and we had plastic things filled with bead stuff or something for the wave sounds, and we used our marching drums for the most parts spread around the auditorium. It was so cool! I love Robert W. Smith! His music is so much fun to play and listen to!!!
the video and audio are off because the file was so large and recorded off a tv presentation since they did not allow recording at the event itself. When it was compressed for RUclips the different speeds showed. But it is the music that is to be appreciated. My son was a Junior and a percussionist, but the piano played did not show up, so he is playing the piano during the performance of this song.
The video and audio are off because we were not allowed to record during the live concert so this was recorded off the TV presentation and then I had to convert it to use on this website. I thought as a director statis that I could go longer than 10 min and larger than 100 MB but it does not seem to work. Anyhow..I tried.
I am a percussionist playing this song in my concert band. I feel in love with this song because of all the ad lib. The ad lib in this song for the cymbals, however, was so even. It wasn't free. It was rhythmical. The ad lib i'm doing isn't at all in rhythm. I hear a random tempo in my head, and play at my free will, regardless of everything except dynamics. But different people have different feelings about it so i'm fine with that. I liked the bass and snare though. Good job guys!
Man i loved playing this song in my HS wind ensemble. We have the best sound quality PAC in the greater northwest ranked up there with bena royal (spelling?) by people who reguarly play there. We played this piece at Disneys music in the parks festival in disney land and i got handed a 1st place overall (jazz /WE) trophy by mickey mouse as fireworks went off partialy because of this AMAZING PIECE. One of the best times of my life so far :D
Robert's conducting is extremely wierd. And like HeatherCrhistineCnet said the timpani is far to weak. But the rest is great! Robert W. Smith is a great composer and conductor.
1. I absolutely hate watching flutists take a breathe in a song. 2. We are currently doing this peice, I love it, I play F Horn. 3. Our "helicopters" were Timpani heads covered by towels. It souded amazing. 4. Personally I like the way this is played, absolutely beautiful, but I wish that he horn would be more spoken. The long note before the Harp/Flute than Alto Sax part is lovely.
Whenever my wind ensemble played this my sophomore year, I'd say that my favorite part was probably the battle of random drum hits starting around 7:17... I got to participate... sort or. Me and the second trombones took pencils and hit the stand randomly! =P
He looks like a robot composing.. Lol. But I love this song~ I played it in my school's Wind Symphony. We played it for a contest... and surprisingly, we won. :3
uhm...my band owned this song. The clarinets in this are TOO LOUD, as is most of the band, and your Timpani player is wimpy. Sorry, hate to rain on your parade but...yuck. It doesn't help that he isn't a very passionate conductor either, though his composing skills are top notch.
i dont wanna sound like a jerk. but my band did it better. i think the machine gun was too much. like he did it too often. the ocean drums were too loud in this. and the cymbal guy didnt have enough. our flute player used an alto flute so it sounded oriental. i played cymbals. and had 15 of them so it was like damn....
Is it just me, or is the middle ensemble solo with the flute and English Horn extremely out of tune? There were alot of beats on the those long notes... And i was cringing.
my High School Band played this 3 times better, not a County Band, a high school with no professionals. this ensemble lacks a strong woodwind section, and thirds. it was a god job, but coming from one of the best highschools in america, it doesnt compete. its a rediculously hard piece to play. well done though!
It's definitely fun to play the flute in this piece! Have this song engrained in my memory even 4 years later

amazing piece, and the helicopter effect is AMAZING
great piece.
Every composer recycles ideas. It's not even a bad thing. He's good.

good luck! my band did it too and it came out awesome
Gah! I was in that band. French Horn. With Mr. Mesa right?
I also prefer the orchestra version, but that might be because I'm a string player and have played it before (2 separate years).

You have to love how the cheesy heart transition makes absolutely no sense with the music at 8:02
I love Robert Smith.
I played this at attsb all state. It was fun
i love this song when we played it last year i loved and jen did a great job on the solo and so did staci(not in this band i don't think)
the english horn and flute solo should be played by alto sax and flute- sounds fantastic
i was there.
the timing is off on this, btw
other than that.....
yay?
yay ocean drums!!!!!
awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Ironman200X hey man, its a long song, the chops get tired
psh instead of oboe we got a sax playing that!!! it sounds better with the sax no offense
uhm...my band owned this song. The clarinets in this are TOO LOUD, as is most of the band, and your Timpani player is wimpy.

FINALLY! THANKS! But Inchon rocks :P Robert W Smith is waaay to American..
horrifically out of tune... dear god. beautiful in principle for execution, but i agree with ironman, it's painfully flat.
haha i was looking for a post like this when i first heard it. ya its bad
Me too. :)
Nonsense. It was perfect.
