Wow, it's hard to pick out a specific outstanding section when everyone was so good! The brass were perfect, the woodwinds were flawless and the percussion was just... perfect!
This is by far the best performance I've seen of this piece! Kudos to the woodwinds on those ostinatos! And more kudos to the soloists! I feel sorry for that gong (tam-tam) player who had to hold that thing the whole time, lol And 7:14 - no one's playing the chimes (random a la church bells)? But this is added to my favorites! 5 stars!
A lot of people referred to the trumpet "blowing it." However, that section is subject to interpretation. I would have preferred it more distinctive, but he did a really nice job playing it based on "his" interpretation.
great piece. my second favorite composer and my second favoite piece. first would have to be Vesuvius by my favorite composer Frank Ticheli. third would have to be currents also by Robert W. Smith himself. gk on the oboe solo in this piece as well. i play 1st flute in my band.
Thank you very much for your comments! This is a presentation video that we use to submit our application to the 36 Certamen Internacional Bandes Musica Vila D'Altea, in Valencia, Spain. About the strange percussion instrument, it is called Ocean Drum. We also have different types of saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor e baritone), they did't appear very much on this movement, but in the next movement (Purgatório), that will be available soon, the saxophones appear a lot. Best regards, ARMAB
It's an ocean drum :) Basically, its a big drum filled 1/4 with little metal beads. It opens up Fantasy On A Japanese Folk Son by Samuel Hazo, which is also a pretty great chart.
I have to agree with the loud part, but not the fast, I think the instrumentalists are capable of that though, I think has more to do with the man up front not asking it of them. The Laboured section was played to fast imo, and the bombastic was a little on the slow side as well. As a Tuba player, I appreciated the pedal Bb at Impending Doom, but when I played this just a few days ago I made almost all the long-tone low Bb's in the piece pedal Bb's instead, which sound better in this piece imo.
I love this piece, but I personally would have preferred it if they had played slower in some parts. you don't get the same experience if you play sections too fast, but that's obvious. Anyway, great oboe solo at the beginning! I play the clarinet, but I can't get over Robert Smith's oboe solos. I loove them. =D
Camera shots are weird, they change too quickly, especially from 6:00-6:30. The bass line of the middle section sounds oddly like "Spring Rounds" from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring...
playing this in my high school wind ensemble - this song is freaking awesomeee. my only complaint is that they should have gotten some real chains for measure 115 on! but it was fantastic overall =D
OK, that is some awesome playing, but..the video editing, though good and interesting, is VERY distracting. Awesome trumpet and oboe solos, and pretty much awesome overall. We're actually playing this song and arrangement in my high school band currently, but at the slow part in the middle, we use actual chains, instead of the strange drum thing that sounded like it had sand in it. Sorry, I'm not a percussionist. Also, there were no saxes, which made me sad. Overall, very very good.
great performance, though I didnt like how it was filmed and put together. The angles where ghetto and the frantic switching between shots at parts like 3:59 and 6:20 seems really corny.

OUr HS marchiing band did the Divine comedy this season and we had a lot of fun with it. (I got to play the timpani solo in this movement!)

I love being a French Horn Player. ^-^
i always think its funny how much this peice is so similar to "into the storm" lol

yes, he does. fortunately and unfortunately. =) they are always well-placed though. I'd be ecstatic if he wrote a solo for clarinet. @_@
That oboe lady with da glasses likes to move alot O.o she in to dat music xD
fkn cymbals at the beginning.
Not necessarily a scream, lol; the score calls for a "mournful wail"
It's called Alpine Fanfare, from the composer Franco Cesarini
what wuz that playin at the begining
He doesn't hold it the whole time. He plays a few other auxillary instruments.
At 4:31 our band used acctual chains.

holy french horns!!!
What the name of the song at the beginning?!
what school do you go to and shouldnt there be a scream too?

this movement is meant to be played obnoxiously loud and fast! All you haters need to play your instruments more violently!
KNOCK 'EM DEAD, TIMPS!!!! =D
The Trumpet solo was waaaaaaaaay too fast.
Trumpet u blew it!!! TOO FAST!!
but overall, great performance
man the trumpet soloist played that way too fast!
