  • This is a list of the Top 10 Foreign TV series and TV shows, completely spoiler free. Foreign TV Series guru Lamont from The Reykjavik Review breaks down why he has chosen these 10 series as the best foreign TV series that exist. The number 1 foreign TV show may not be what you imagine, given that it is only half foreign.

    The best foreign language TV shows are worth knowing because everyone talks about American series all the time but The Reykjavik Review is the only RUclips channel dedicated entirely to reviews and discussion of foreign language series and films.
    Dark from Germany is among the best foreign language shows, but not the best one of all. Denmark kicked off the whole Nordic Noir fever which continued later with The Bridge from Sweden, Trapped from Iceland, Bordertown from Finland and Nobel from Norway which is no. 8 on this list. The 7th entry on this list is Undercover from Belgium, which is a surprise given what other series Belgium has given us; stinkers like The Break (La Trêve). The 6th on this list is Fauda from Israel which is outstandingly paced and shot. In 5th place is A Very Secret Service which is a beautiful parody of France in the 1960s, but also a very solid espionage series. Number 4 on the list is the impeccable Tabula Rasa and number 3 is this channel's namesake, Trapped from Iceland. Second on the list is the critically acclaimed and world celebrated The Bridge from Sweden and Denmark, and finally the list finishes with The Missing, which may be technically British but was set and filmed first in France and the second series in Germany and Afghanistan.
    The Reykjavik Review is run by Lamont who is Australian. He speaks (to various levels) French and Swedish (but funnily enough, not Icelandic).

    What are some of your favourite non-English language series?

    • @lamontmcleod2
      @lamontmcleod2  4 года назад

      Hahaha. I am assuming this is a joke...

    • @lamontmcleod2
      @lamontmcleod2  4 года назад

      @menckencynic Yeah but I can't always tell, because I don't always know what you're talking about.
      For example, this one here.
      I am assuming this has some link with poontang, which is something to do with Vietnamese prostitutes and their 'parts', I believe made popular by Full Metal Jacket. Maybe... I dunno. My introduction to this concept was as a kid when my favourite cricketer was named Ricky Ponting. He later went on to become one of the most celebrated Australian cricketers ever, but not when I was young, he was just a good player back then.
      But this guy I hung around called him Poon-tang, which one day he semi-explained to me, just saying that it was a euphamism.
      So I come to your joke with only some of the context that you might be referring to. The same thing happened with the apocalypse and Australian asking for a doughnut joke. Like, is it meant to be that Australians are stupid or just that we eat a lot? Both may be true but I don't "get" the joke.

      There's a French crime series "La forêt" which we liked a lot. I enjoyed the first season of Brazilian "3%" but that may be due to Lusophilia. Many people in my circle of friends enjoyed "Les revenants" but I don't dig zombies :)
      Stay away from 1983, the Polish series, where the writers seem to have tried a new recipe: let's keep ALL the ideas from the brainstorm. The dozens of story lines quickly grow apart and it takes an army of deux ex machina to bring them back together, or in most cases, not.

      Stumbled upon your channel today. Absolutely delighted.
      Personally, I haven't done a top 10 list yet and am not sure if I can frame it the way you did. Off-hand, I'm more inclined to ranking individual seasons rather than shows. If so, Trapped Season 1 has to be at the top for me, way above anything else. Again off-hand, I might give the second spot to Braquo Season 1.
      But if I look at shows in totality, I'd rate Millennium the highest (assuming we can call it a show). If not, I'd probably rank The Bridge the highest followed by Trapped and Wallander. There would also be some names that are not on your list: Hinterland and Four Seasons in Havana. I'm not sure where exactly I'd place them.
      I haven't seen Undercover as yet but you've given me a reason to. I haven't seen A Very Secret Service or Fauda either but for watching those, I guess I'll need a lot more encouragement.

    Dude you don't know how grateful I am that I found my your channel. I knew I could trust your critiques when you did one on money heist and my god you were right. Most of the tv reviewers on this platform are either having terrible taste/critiques or are straight up sell outs. You just introduced me to hours of quality entertainment and are even (mostly) available on netflix. For months I was looking for reviewers that do international tv I could trust. And behold I found your channel. You have good taste. For that, thanks.

    My wife and I got about 2 episodes into “Trapped’ and decided the pace was too slow. We did enjoy “The Valhalla Murders” though. We throughly enjoyed all 4 seasons of “The Bridge” after first seeing “The Tunnel” Fr/En version. “Bordertown” was too dark for her and missing the police partner dynamic that she prefers but I just finished Season 3 and very much enjoyed it. “Deadwind” was fun too.
    We live in Los Angeles so we’re largely limited to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video for our foreign tv offerings. We’ve decided that we much prefer to watch in the original languages with English subtitles to get all the emotional nuances from the original actors. Neither of us has lived in Europe (some vacations though) so part of the appeal is learning more about the countries. For example in “Deadwind” we thought she was doing a lot of unlawful entry until I checked Google and found Finnish police don’t need search warrants.
    Thanks for all the suggestions!

Some of the shows on you list I have watched already and they totally immersed me in the story, the characters, the mood, the winter, cold and dark of northern Europe (which, living in Brazil at the moment, was a blessing). Based you your good taste, I will watch the others I haven't seen. You asked to not do it, but Finnland's "Bordertown" should make the list include 11 shows... :) In case you haven't seen it yet, you may like the danish "The Chesnut Man" (I am saying it based on your taste). The American version really annoyed me. It completely changed the character of the male detective. The fact I cared about him but for a long time was not sure if I trusted him was a major reason I loved the original, so I only watched two episodes of the US version. I'd love to know if they even included the event which really depended for its impact on the viewer liking him. No spoilers, though, in case you get to see the original.

      Thank you very much for this comment! Comments like this really help.
      I actually saw Parasite at the cinema (I'm Australian though, not British)... but the reason I didn't review it was that I felt like I didn't quite... GET it? Like, I understood it. I understood some of the ideas being expressed, but I felt that I lacked the knowledge of Asian and Korean cinema to actually make a good review. Like, I watched Chris Stuckmann's review a while after I saw it and was like "It probably IS as good as he says... but I don't feel like I saw it for what it was."
      So I didn't want to review it when I didn't feel like I'd properly understood it. But I might watch it again and then do a review.

      Yeah, to be honest, Bordertown never entered the picture for me. I just found it way too dry, although the music was good. I was hoping it would pick up in the second season but I don't feel that it did. Deadwind was pretty similar I found.

      @@lamontmcleod2 Yup, second season of Bordertown was a let down ( that home invasion plot was kinda trite and annoying ) and, I must admit, I had forgotten about how in Black Spot, every single major character did at least one incredibly stupid thing almost every episode. So for me that’s refreshing because it’s the first time for zombie genre and the setting is from ancient times. And I am glad that it didn’t focus on love story. I’m not a hater of love stories but if I have seen series that has been ruined because they focused too hard on love angle only. Second would be Vagabond and while others didn’t enjoy it exactly, I loved it because I’m into action. The sound of your heart, it’s the only Korean comedy that really made me laugh. As in you don’t want to take a look for at least 15 minutes of the first time episode of Kingdom? Most of the Korean series for TV are made with consideration of minors. Since watching TV is a family thing at night so I can’t think much of seriously heavy stuff, most of what I have seen are light drama with of course love story. Light comedies with love story, with the exception of The Good Manager. Or maybe because there’s not much selection on Netflix in my region. So I haven’t seen something similar to Vagabond. But then you can try their movies on that area they have a lot of good stuff like Old Boy.

    I have yet to see seasons 2 & 3 without Nikolaj Lie Kaas, but season 1 of Follow The Money is definitely up there with The Bridge and Trapped in that there really aren't any weaknesses, and it's packaged together so well. It's similar to Trapped in that you really get the family aspect with most the characters, adding depth and realism.
    Personally I'd put The Killing in a tie with The Missing for #1. I agree Season 1 is weaker, but not by much (although maybe that was somewhat Soren Malling's doing in helping to hold it up). One thing that show was so incredibly good at doing was having multiple planes of politics, investigative work, military, business etc that start out fairly separate; and they get compressed together as deftly as a James Clavell novel.
    I definitely agree on having The Missing at #1. It has a real je ne sais quoi to it that sets it apart, and good luck on anyone who tries to replicate it. I doubt it can be done.
