    Learn how anxiety affects your brain. How does anxiety affect your brain? When your deep brain perceives a threat, it turns on the anxiety response. Anxiety turns down your ability to think, and your brain goes into a protective reactive mode called the fight/flight/freeze response. This physical reaction that your brain and body has is a huge part of anxiety, and it makes it hard to solve problems and control our behaviors. When you learn to identify the fight/flight/freeze response, you can learn techniques to calm yourself down, get thinking again, and respond differently.
    Understanding how anxiety affects your brain can help you learn how to stop reacting to emotions, stop doing stupid stuff that you regret later, and live a happier life where your actions line up with who you want to be.

    I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.

      @@tarabedford8329 you are confusing the terms "copyright" and "trademark" - I actually work in this field. Copyright is for artwork, photographs, etc. Trademark is for names, phrases, etc. The owner of this channel does in fact appear to have a newly registered Trademark for "Therapy in a Nutshell" as of January 2021, which you can see here tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4807:5ldhe9.2.1

    The weirdest thing about this fear response is how it only feels terrible when you think about it. A panic or anxiety attack feels like the end of the world, but in an actual dangerous situation, you hardly even feel it.
    Like you said...it gives tunnel vision and you don't even think. I always found it weird how I would have these intense panic attacks, and feared those feelings because of how they caused me to catastrophize and spiral into darker and darker thoughts.
    Yet, one time I accidently kicked in a wasp nest, and got chased by the entire hive. I felt like a ghost. It was the coolest and most surreal experience, terrifying yes, but in the moment there were no spiraling thoughts. Just "RUN." And I practically flew across the field, I felt like Usain Bolt.

      It So Difficult thing to explain or to control anxiety and panic attacks fear 😨. Am suffering from panic attacks sometimes i feeling the same like it's end of the world 😓😫😆😅

    I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique ruclips.net/user/postUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.

    It gave me a smile on my face realising that the fight flight freeze reaction that i so often 'suffer' from is actually a sweet loving (but often overactive and exagurated ) reaction of my brain to keep me alive: it wants me strongly to live! That makes ME to want to live, because its MY brain! I'll just need the skills and insights to relax and soothen her. Maybe some might think: duhh! But for me that was a new insight, kind of an epiphany. Thank you for your great videos; you present the information in such a nice and educative way that i totally connect with and relate to it eventhough i'm not an english speaking person by origin.     How to turn off fight flight fawn response
    1. Become aware of your triggers
    2. Learn to notice your body signs
    3. Notice that you are flooding
    4. Pause
    5. Try to calm down
    6. Ask for a break
    7. Commit to coming back to issue
    8. Time to Self sooth
    9. Come back to problem from calmer perspective

    I've suffered from generalized anxiety disorder all my life. I've learned to relax through breathing, humming, meditating, going on walks, self-soothing, etc. However, I don't always do this and then my anxiety returns. I'm a highly-sensitive person and tend to be hyper-aware of my body sensations, so it's especially important for me to calm down and try to be more of an observer. Your video is a reminder of what I need to do. Thanks for sharing. Jen

    I have complex-ptsd, major depression, anxiety and ocd. I also have social anxiety and that's not counting all my other health issues. It's a daily struggle.

    I finally blew up emotionally towards my mom today after years of repression. Felt like a huge weight lifted off my body. I’ve had gut & anxiety issues for forever, & I could feel the anxiety and gut feelings strongly when venting. Makes sense why my repressed emotions effect my gut etc. I cut her off and am going to focus on not repressing my emotions as well as being myself without fear of being judged etc, I’ve repressed that for forever too.

    I’m not sure how to use this skill for my anxiety. I wake up with such intense anxiety. I am aware of my anxiety before my eyes are even open. I lie there for sometimes over an hour to try to deal with my anxiety to no avail. I end up getting up and taking Xanax, but I feel like that’s just a cover up. I need to deal with what’s going on; I just don’t know how.

      @@amandamiles4590 Then I think what you are experiencing could be depression, not anxiety. I have suffered from depression a number of times in my life but I also suffer anxiety. Some of the feelings/symptoms are similar but they are two different things.
      People respond differently to treatment so you need to find what works for you. The best thing for me was exercise and routine, mixed with healthy living. Minimize stress.
      When it was really bad I saw a good doctor and used antidepressants but came off them gradually when I knew I could cope. Talking to people who care helps alot too. Best of luck with it. It does get better.

      Trying to deal with it...is the creation of tension .. please let your energy flow...let your River run...no dams...just open plains over which the energy can run out over... please walk...do not fight your nature

    Rip bad thoughts out like weeds. The more you do this the easier it is. Bad thoughts don’t have a home in you.

      @@RBBSBB21 it will take time and practice as your use to holding on to these thoughts. Try to eliminate what stresses you out. These thoughts don’t serve you if they are hurting you. I became vegan which helped heal my body. Processed foods stress out the body and put your body in a constant cycle of survival. When you eat healthy, your body will use those nutrients to heal and become a better version of yourself allowing your mind to remove the bad thoughts. I also listened to 432hz healing tones. Music is tuned to 440hz which is off and gives off negative vibrations. 432 hz heals, nature gives off the 432hz vibrations. It’s important to be in nature as it will heal you in time.

    From experience, The instant cure for anxiety is to understand the fact that there are infinite amount of possible outcomes in this universe and our brain only thinks of a handful . A bad outcome can become the means of a good outcome in the future. Just like that a good outcome can become the means of a bad outcome. For example, you lost your job (bad thing). But then you got a new job which is better ( bad thing led to a good outcome.) It's an endless cycle. So just go with the flow and don't think about it . 😄 Goodluck.

    This video is fascinating in the information it provides about common signs of anxiety and why our brain reacts in the way it does. Personally, I found that coffee is a major trigger for producing panic attacks and extreme anxiety. In the future, I'm going to try to cut down quite a bit in my coffee consumption.

      Me too, coffee kickstarts my fight response and affects my digestion and nerves. It sends me into a hypo mode where my heart & breathing rate are rapid. I’m much better on decaf or tea :)

    I feel discouraged and disconnected from the human race when every video about how to cope with anxiety recommends taking a walk. I cannot walk, I’m surrounded by snow and I can’t leave the house even if I tried to wheel outside for some fresh air. I’ll keep on looking for help, but thanks anyway. You have very interesting points to keep in mind.

      LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life . I became a better version of myself This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body . A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken . One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot . It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine , this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip : Everything is alright . The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me ( although it's not gone ) . Before all I could do was lay in bed . Now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before . "

      I had a moment on my first mushroom trip where i was lying in bed and lost total connection to my physical body . I felt as i was just a dot of energy on my pillow such a crazy feeling and made me smile , really realized that we are really nothing but energy and had an overwhelming feeling from that trip onwards .

    The amount of anxiety I have is crazy rn. I notice that my anxiety tends to be around social and relationship situations as I journal through this series. I've discovered that when you are experiencing anxiety, it is most important to deal with the anxiety FFF's first before you can work through your deeper emotional issues otherwise it feels as though I'm spinning my wheels while stuck in a rut(its okay cause I'm not going to hurt myself but the rut gets bigger due to uncertainty or wheels spinning). I think for anxious ppl trying to learn emotional skills. This video is probably the most important since I've been trying to force myself to face my emotions when I feel triggered. Not the best, I'm learning that it's not a distraction to go do something that calms your anxiety. It's important in order to access your higher functioning part of your brain which allows for rational and reasoning. Brute force with my emotions is what I've been doing and it's not the best solution. I need to take care of myself first

    I have a dilemma. I feel this occur when I'm actually in a situation where I cannot stop/pause/take a break. When I'm a presenter in a meeting, for example. I'm fine until it's my turn. Often, I'm fine until I'm engaged in my presentation and and then it happens, usually at some point where I cannot find the right word(s) to share. At that point the stupidity starts as my thinking brain is shut down. I think I have a fear of looking stupid that starts it all off. And then I proceed to prove it. And this is something that happens only when a lot of people are focused on me. Any suggestions?

    This is great however I seem to be jolted awake at night by panic attacks where my body is in FFF. I’ve no idea what is triggering it at the time it’s happening because I go from being asleep to full blown panic in seconds 😔

    I’m having health anxiety because of vitamin d deficiency. I’m on supplements and it takes a while to get better and you get new symptoms while you’re body is adjusting to the vitamin d3.

Whom can the one being threatened go to another rescuer supporter with the tools to recover physical health strengths without going to a hospital or a jail.????? How & where are the go to SOLUTIONS TO FEEL & BE PHYSICALLY SAFE from harmful outside environments of weather snow conditions???? What are quick solutions to stay ALIVE in comfort.???????     I learned a workaround though -- I bring a copy of my resume, some STAR interview responses, and a couple categories of examples from what I studied about the position description. That makes me feel prepared and not just a blank slate like my brain behaves 😂

    As a child, I was punished for making bad decisions. I grew in to an intelligent, caring, talented, well spoken adult. However, it's only now (and I am in my 50s) that I have realised that I have spent my entire adult life with a fear of making bad decisions. My brain makes up thoughts and beliefs to prevent me from getting in to situations where I have to make a 'big' decision.
    A few years ago, I had been dating a girl for four years when I inherited some money. I had been saving to buy my first home for years and I was in a great financial position. But I needed to choose a location and a house. I was fairly sure that my job would be moving from 25 miles away to nearer to my girlfriend's home, where I was living at the time, but a voice in my head told me to keep saving until I knew for certain if my job would be moving. I obeyed it, and just looked online at houses for sale in both locations, each time wondering 'what if it turns out to be in the 'wrong' location?'
    I ended up priced out of the market and my girlfriend dumped me, making me homeless. It's only since then that I have realised I have had a problem for my whole adult life. I dated a lady in my 30s, who I really should have married. It was only after we finished that I realised what a mistake I had made by not asking her to marry me.
    I can look back rationally at when I received my inheritance now, and cannot believe or understand what must have been going through my head. I'm sure this isn't the first time in my life when I have looked back and wondered 'what was I thinking', but Emma sums it up perfectly in this video when she says that 'your thinking brain shuts down when you're highly emotional'. At the thought of having to make a 'big' decision, I subconsciously get emotional, thinking that I will be punished if I get it wrong, so don't make a decision at all.
    I was incredibly indecisive with both my long-term partners. I wonder how they put up with me. I went to test drive cars, liked them, but then still had to 'go away to think about it' before I would buy one. I seem to wait until I have no choice before I make a decision.
    There are numerous times in my life when I realise that I want something that I could have had, but can't any more. I should have married either of my long-term girlfriends, I could have easily bought a house when I inherited, when interest rates were low, but didn't. Now I'm homeless, so having to try to buy one. House prices are 50% higher, mortgage rates have quadrupled. I'm priced out of the market where I would like to buy (and if I had been able to think rationally when I inherited, I would have realised where I should have bought).
    I've never considered myself to have anxiety. I've researched it, so that I could help others manage theirs, but never thought that what I was reading applied to me. All of what I read and watched implied that people think 'this is an anxiety inducing situation, I think I'll run away'. Sure, I get a bit anxious if I have to speak in a meeting, but I don't 'run away'. My triggers are more subtle. When I knew my job may be moving, I knew that 'my job' wouldn't exist any more and that I would be given a different one. My counterpart's job at the company taking us over became available, on higher pay than I was on, but I still didn't apply for it, as I was anxious about the change of location (even though in my head, I knew I would have to move anyway). I liked the culture of my old workplace, feared the change, saw the takeover as a threat instead of an opportunity and resisted the move, even though I had no power to.
    I've always been indecisive and and overthinker. I bite and pick my fingernails and the skin of my fingers and thumbs. I fidget a lot, but I wouldn't have described myself as being 'anxious'. I'm one of those people who others probably think that I'm good at everything. I'm intelligent, talented, logical, well spoken, good at sport etc. But I know that if I won't be good at something, I don't even try, for fear of embarrassing myself. I wouldn't dance at a party, try to draw a picture, get involved in a conversation about something I know nothing about etc.
    I so wish that I had realised that I had a problem years ago. Every day, I break down as I think how my life could have been if I had known about my anxiety even 5 years ago. I've ruined my ex-girlfriend's dreams of having children, after she invested so much in to our relationship. I've cost myself a fortune financially, because of the 'cognitive distortions' my anxiety caused. I find it really hard to understand how I've gone from being able to buy a lovely home for my girlfriend and me to live in so that we could marry and start a family, to being homeless and priced out of them market within 5 years.

    This is wonderful that you’re providing help for those of us with anxiety. Mine is mostly under control with medication as it was truly debilitating with agoraphobia, but I still get anxiety with lightheadedness when driving on a fwy, especially if I’m unfamiliar with the route. I did a course decades ago which still helps as I was instructed to put thumb and index finger together that relates to when I listened to calming dialogue. I think I need CBT and should pursue that. One time when on the fwy, I got so lightheaded that I thought I was going to pass out but then it peaked and quickly went away. Scary!

My fight or flight comes with extreme fear and doom, mainly from panic attacks starting at 12yrs old. Being 40 now they are not any less scary. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep inhalation-exhalation needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath.     Mindfull thinking teach you what exercises to do..but u only talk I think u should teach us how to do it. So I am not getting anything from your lessons..anyway.thank you..I will go to mindfully thinking..

    for the past month i’ve been waking up everyday with extreme nausea, a racing heart, i hyperventilate and then i puke. my heart is constantly racing and i shake, sweat, lose my thinking, lose my appetite, and have a tight feeling in my gut. it has been constant hell because i wake up like this everyday and it persists throughout the day. i’m starting compass today and i hope it helps :(

    I guess my thinking is more why would I want to just get rid of these difficult emotions using exercise or body when the real issue would be not facing the pain? Like I want to resolve these issues not just do yoga or do diet to resolve them. Also I am pretty healthy and sleep well.

    I hate panic attacks,they have ruined my life,they sent me down a rabbit hole with regards to meds. Which made things worse.
