Hamilton is a great beginner watch. It's swiss and well made. Sure lume sucks and WR is ok. Then again to get it at that price point is excellent. If you want real watch and mechanical get a CWC MELLOR 72 MECHANICAL hand wind. But hamilton is an all around good buy. The movement IS a modified ETA since it is part of Swatch. I have the bronze version and I forced patina mine (crushed boiled eggs in a ziplock bag for 50 min). Is it a one and done watch? No, for me it’s a camping/outdoor/casual watch. It’s a strap monster but I doesn’t wear well on a NATO. Looks good on a NATO but sits too high on wrist. Even for a thin watch. Wears and looks better on leather straps. I kinda want the steel version just for outdoor camping activity beater.
Hot dam Miguel those shots of that Hami at the beginning of the video, I just love your videos man!!! You have stated some of the reasons why I’m not sure if I’m getting a Hamilton khaki esp now since I bought the white dial field from Marc, Islander 129! Automatic movement with 100m and lume!!! Any thoughts to help me decide?
Jason thank you 🙏 for the support. Those are all great choices, but for everyday use I would go for the CW trident 300! I just bought the 40mm white dial version and I love it!
@@SoCalWatchReviews my pleasure 🙏 the white 40mm is actually the one I would get if I do get a 300. I don’t really wanna pay for the COSC in the C63. But I know COSC movements have upgraded parts…so there’s that.
I like the Formex and I like the Hamilton. Specs on Formed are way better BUT Hamilton has rich history and looks more like what we are use to a Field watch looking like. Honestly there is room for both in a watchbox if the Formex floats your boat. I like the Formex. I'd like it a hell of a lot more if it was much cheaper. 😂
I wanted to buy a Hamilton, but 38 mm is too small for me and 42 mm is too big. The 40 mm versions are currently no longer available as automatic watches. The lug to lug is way too big for me at Hamilton. That's why I chose the Formex. I think the watch is absolutely successful with its dimensions. Nice job on the video - excellent production standards! I have the Khaki mechanical, and don't find it bland at all. It's supposed to be easy to read, first and foremost, and - especially in the dark olive, with pure white hands and numerals- it does that superbly. For my purposes (weekend hiking and birding), it leaves nothing to be desired. I'm sure some would find my Max Bill auto (black dial, green lume numerals) even more bland, but I think it's spectacular. Different tastes are why we have thousands of different watches to choose from! Hamilton could tweak it, if they were so inclined: AR, shorter lugs, and a tad more than "splash resistance" would be my asks, but none of those are deal-breakers to owning it. Fact is, long lugs make it sit well on a Nato, the flat sapphire means that the slightest tilt overcomes reflections, and it handles getting rained on perfectly well... and at $300 on eBay, it was great value for the money.
I really like the Khaki in pictures, but on my wrist it's incredibly boring. I'm loving the.Formwx design and colours, but really wish I could try one on before purchasing. Thank you for your video.

Hey Miguel, good review. I don't think that the perfect watch exists and there are elements of almost any watch that we will dislike. Take the SPB bracelet for example. The bracelet could be better. That doesn't make it watch not worth owning. It is just another variable in the mix of a purchasing decision. It will matter to you or it won't. History is pretty far down the list for me in modern watches. The Hamilton of today has essentially nothing to do with the Hamilton of old other than the name. That's fine. This isn't Patek we are talking about. One point of clarification/criticism - a screw down crown contributes about 0 to water resistance. It simply makes the crown harder to engage when in use. I say harder because I have known divers who have unscrewed crowns with the back of their gloves when working. The crown gaskets, crystal gasket, case back gasket, and case back thickness all play a role. You can have a watch with a non screw down crown with 200 meters of water resistance. You should check out some of the videos fromBeyond the Press. They have a wet pressure chamber that can take watches down to 3000 meters. Most of the watches stop because the case back deforms and presses the hands into the crystal and they stop. When they release the pressure they start again. Then they usually crank up the pressure until the watches pancake. It is awesome to watch! All the best.
2 field watches better than the Hamilton: Long Island Watch Company ISL-41 and the Momentum Atlas Automatic. Both have these things tothe Hamilton does not: AR coating, 100M WR. Screw down crown, a movement that can be easily regulated by any watchmaker.
I have to give props to Formex being original in their design and vision of a field watch. But it misses the mark for me, their sports offering the Essence looks banging! But I'd take the Hamilton or even the Timex Expedition North over this one and have some spare change, even looking at a microbrand i'd take the RZE Resolute.
Saludos.
The boringness is what makes the mechanical field Hammy special. It’s a tool watch with significant military history, so if you’re looking for flashy, you’ve picked the wrong watch. I’d take a Hamilton over any other brand every day of the week in the field watch category
This is what I am talking about a watch with its own identity it breaks the mold for sure. Hamilton is a bargain basement price for a entry level work. With that said Formex designs and make their own dial and Case. I own a khaki field king and it’s a great watch. But when you put it next to a Formex makes you not even want to wear your Hammy. Heritage I mean everyone has to start somewhere. And seeing you don’t get half the functionality out of a hammy vs a Formex ….
@@WINDINGCROWNS that obvious:) For the record, I never said I "hate" the Formex; I just wasn't impressed w/SoCal video; love his other stuff, not this one. The Formex is simply not worth the $1000 price tag. It does look cheap to me. I'm sure there are many who love it and I can appreciate that.
@@amgolfer3591 I was just kidding. This brand has been around awhile now. I am 51 and remember them in my Watch magazines and watch books when I was in my 20s. They just have new ownership and started making waves again. I really like this watch but not at that price. Now if I can get it for 400 to 450. I would ve a player. I like the boxy look. Reminds me of a Boldr Odyssey but with way better movement and in Titanium. Also Formex has more history than Boldr obviously. So in comparison to that brand this one wins. In comparison to Hamilton. Hamilton takes the win.
Spec wise the FormeX is the winner but the Hamilton Khaki mechanical is an icon. History matters… did I hear correctly that the formex is $295 more then the Hamilton?
Oh you heard right. In some cases, depending on how great of deal one can get w/the Hamilton KF, it would be even more of a spread. .HISTORY matters to most and that is a fact--simply NO comparison IMO.
SoCal, just being perfectly honest here my friend with what I am about to say and for the recored I thumbed this video down (not proud of that BTW)....The "whole" boring comment about the Hamilton Khaki Field was simply crazy IMHO--it's a classic indeed. The Formex just looked cheap and for nearly $300 and it some cases even $400-500 more, this is simply ludicrous.....compare it to another watch that's only been around for 20 or so years and then maybe you have a decent comparison. HISTORY matters to all the watch enthusiasts I watch; it's everything as a matter of fact and there is simply NO comparison between the iconic field watch (IHamilton) and this other brand you compared it too. Again, I may be way off w/my assessment, but I don't think I am. I will give you another chance because I like your humility and I have enjoyed some of your past videos, but this is utter nonsense. I sincerely believe MOST will agree w/me and I know I am being direct w/you, but it had to be said. I can get the iconic Hamilton for even a better price point than you were mentioning and this puts it in a league of it's own. It's a TRUE field watch (looks like a field watch) and beautiful for the price point--I haven't even dived into the significant HISTORY of Hamilton.....Hey, I'm sure you are not going to need your Khaki Field--you want to make me a deal and I will take it off your hands? I wouldn't mind a back up at a great price point; Hamilton, IMHO, is that significant. It may be boring and the lume may be lacking in comparison, but it's definitely not a boring watch. So SoCal, make me a decent offer? You can then keep sporting your new love, the Formex......:) BTW, were you gifted a Formex for the video? I didn't catch that if it was mentioned......I sure hope this wasn't what the video was about because then you lose all credibility....yes? Nevertheless, thanks for the video, but I just couldn't let this one slide. Hamilton wins all day long, hand down.
Thank you for being sharing your feelings. No, Formex in no way shape or form gifted me the watch nor paid me a single penny to produce this video. They did let me borrow the watches and they paid for shipping. I stand by what I said, the dial on the Hami doesn’t get me excited, but that doesn’t mean I’m bashing the watch nor do I want to sell it. Please rewatch the video, I praised the Hami and simply called out the things I don’t like. Have a blessed weekend and I look forward to watching your video reviews in the near future.
@@SoCalWatchReviews SoCal, didn't you call the Hamilton boring? I don't know about you, but I am not reaching to wear a boring watch. So which is it? You praise it, yes, but then call it boring? Confused.....For nearly a $1000 price tag, I highly doubt most will take this video seriously or make the jump. While I do respect your opinion, I just thought the title "Don't Buy a Hamilton Khaki Filed" was ridiculous. Nevertheless, you have a right to say whatever you want and I really do respect that; I just flat out disagree w/your assessment and I will NOT being watching the video again as I don't need to. Thank you for the clarification that it wasn't gifted to you b/c I would have said my goodbyes. I have always given you mad props due to your humble approach; much appreciated my friend and I sincerely mean that. Also, and I sincerely hope you weren't throwing a "dig" w/your last comment about watching my future video reviews? This is your job, NOT mine. Just saying....have a great Memorial Day weekend, SoCal.
@@amgolfer3591 This is not my job is my hobby. I keep the Hami in the collection because is great for creating content, and esthetically it does look boring, but that doesn’t mean I don’t respect it. Hamilton has a very rich history and the watch is great for the price. Also when you’re in this content creating space you need video titles that will make people click the video. However in the video not once did I say not to buy the watch.
@@SoCalWatchReviews I never said you didn't respect the Hamilton. I know you never said to "not" buy the Hamilton, but then again you didn't have tow:) I merely mentioned that HISTORY is important--there is simply NO comparison and I stand by that. Esthetically, I wholeheartedly disagree. w/your assessment and I also stand by that. It's a "true" field watch and I believe most know that it's NOT a diver or a chronograph--it's a field watch and I believe Hamilton nailed it from all directions. I quote you, SoCal, "Also when you’re in this content creating space you need video titles that will make people click the video." Sounds like someone wants to make a residual income as well? I don't fault you one bit my friend and I'm a capitalist through and through......I love what you're doing and hope you can build your channel to something great....I really mean that. IMHO, I think you could have done a better comparison but then again, I'm sure it's not that easy and this is why I don't do what you do. Last but not least, I'm sure it's your hobby, but don't you think it's also your job to give the best review possible? I think so. Remember, you chose to do this and I feel you are obligated to a certain degree to help others make an informed decision and educate them.....others do it for a hobby as well, but at the end of the day, people listen to them and take their recommendations seriously. Just a thought and if I'm way off, I'm sorry. Thanks for the dialogue BTW.
@@amgolfer3591 Making videos is very time consuming, this particular one took 20 hrs. Yes I’m trying to grow the channel to one day have the opportunity to be compensated for my time. At the end of the video I told people to not be influenced by other reviewers including me. You’re 100% right I have the responsibility to always be honest, upfront, etc to my audience. However that sometimes means I have to say things that some people (like you) may not agree with, but that’s what’s so cool about having your own channel, you make the rules. As long as I’m not hurting anyone or spreading miss information I think I’m ok. By the way not everyone cares about history and heritage, don’t believe me? Then why are homage watches and microbrands so popular? Because some people just want cool looking watches and can care less about heritage. You see, it’s hard to have an opinion or takes sides. Being in my position is extremely difficult, no matter what comment I make even if it’s factual, people always come out and throw shots, instead of thanking all of us content creators for the FREE content. Thank you again for your time sir.
Thank you for watching and honestly I don’t like how the Hamilton looks on that bracelet. Long story short I ended up selling the Hamilton and bought an Explorer 1 instead 😊
I found it odd that you talked so much about Hamilton during a review of a Formex watch. Knocking a popular watch while talking up a “friends” watch just seems like an odd approach and made you look biased.
I say don't buy one at all. I've never understood why these are so popular. Ridiculously long lugs, with crappy AR coating and horrible lume. Not to mention the most boring dial and an ugly dull finishing on the case. 🤢🤮
I feel ya. I find the Khaki Field brilliant looking, however I also found it lacking - for me it was the WR and size. The only field watches I had experienced prior to the Khaki Field were at a more traditional size (Not A-11 traditional, I experienced those later) of 36mm. So the Khaki Field just seemed oversized. But I'm weird about sizing hehe. Excellent video, I REALLY enjoyed it!

But I'd take the Hamilton or even the Timex Expedition North over this one and have some spare change, even looking at a microbrand i'd take the RZE Resolute.
Thank you 🙏 for your continued support my brother!

Great video bro The work Formex is doing is great!
Thank you 🙏 for your support P ❤️
Great video, really enjoyed it. I like divers, but a good capable field watch is a close second for me.
Thank you 🙏 for your support!
The boringness is what makes the mechanical field Hammy special. It’s a tool watch with significant military history, so if you’re looking for flashy, you’ve picked the wrong watch. I’d take a Hamilton over any other brand every day of the week in the field watch category
👍🏼
This is what I am talking about a watch with its own identity it breaks the mold for sure. Hamilton is a bargain basement price for a entry level work. With that said Formex designs and make their own dial and Case. I own a khaki field king and it’s a great watch. But when you put it next to a Formex makes you not even want to wear your Hammy. Heritage I mean everyone has to start somewhere. And seeing you don’t get half the functionality out of a hammy vs a Formex ….
Thank you 🙏 for your support and comment 👍🏼
Just don't like the look of the Formex. It's not giving me the traditional field watch vibe.
Thank you 🙏 for watching and commenting!
Couldn't agree more, Nicholas.....looks cheap IMHO.
@@amgolfer3591 man you really hate the formex! 😂
Thank you 🙏 for watching and yes it’s more expensive than the Hamilton.
Oh you heard right. In some cases, depending on how great of deal one can get w/the Hamilton KF, it would be even more of a spread. .HISTORY matters to most and that is a fact--simply NO comparison IMO.
@@amgolfer3591 100%
@@SoCalWatchReviews in that case its not even close the Hamilton wins by a landslide
just cant get into that case shape around the lugs
The cool thing is that we can all love watches, but not the same ones 😊
Thank you 🙏 for watching!
If the cost is important I don't think you'd be cross shopping these two.
👍🏼
I just had my Hamilton khaki on and got a wrist shot mid way through having to tackle a homeless person to save a woman’s life
I saw your video man, you’re a bad ass 👏
@@SoCalWatchReviews thank you brother!! Was a crazy situation but I love this kinda stuff

Thank you for the support!
Umm.... No...... Sorry, it doesn't look better at all. Get the Hamilton auto 38 on a bracelet.
Thank you for the support and your opinion 👍🏼
That formex watch is twice the price of the Hamilton. Unless I'm search deprived
Thank you for watching!
I say don't buy one at all. I've never understood why these are so popular. Ridiculously long lugs, with crappy AR coating and horrible lume. Not to mention the most boring dial and an ugly dull finishing on the case. 🤢🤮
Thank you for watching and sharing your opinion.

💯
