- During summer we sowed out a few French marigold seeds we got from a local community garden.. A few of the plants have done exceptionally well & we have been very surprised with the number of seeds that they produce..
It is also great to see the plants pop up randomly throughout the patch after the girls spread them around..

Have a great one everyone...
I am a beginner gardener. This is the best how-to video ever!!! Straight to the point and easy to see and understand! I didn't know I could keep the seeds in their little pouches. COOL!!! Thanks for the tips, Rob Bob!
Glad the clip could help you out :)
Hope the veggie patch is coming along well.
Rob.
I agree ...the other videos I watched scared my beginner side a bit . Am gonna sow my seeds this weekend ,fingers crossed
Very nice! I love French marigolds. We saved enough last year to cover the entire garden.
Hi there...
You can sow them direct or into pots first then plant them out into the garden.. Spring & autumn are the best time to sow the seed but we have sown it all year round in the sub tropics with good results..
Hope that helps some & have a great one,
Rob.
Not big on flowers but I do like these Dale... Probably as they have a few different uses..
Have a great one Sir..
Amazing! I planted two different kinds of marigolds in late Spring. I had no idea that I'd have such a beautiful, resilient flowering plant! They were everywhere by mid Summer and absolutely gorgeous! I had such abundant growth that I had to tranplant them into rows a little later in summer ...and they are still fabulous! I will never buy seeds again! Appreciate your tips. Happy gardening;) Thank you.
+2tooreal4most They are one of my favourite plants to grow in the patch now too. Love the flowers & seeing what beneficial bugs they've lured into the patch.
Cheers & all the best.
I just scatter them on the surface of the ground Frank as we have so many.. If you were to sow them properly I would think they just need a light covering with soil..
Hope that helps Sir..
Besides all the wonderful benefits, they are very cheerful looking in the garden!
They do make the patch look a lot brighter :)
Koo has been around nearly every bed & barrel with seeds she has collected :D Think we will be overrun with them by the end of summer :/
Thanks GrannyBird Birdsong & have a great one :)
Rob..
Doesn't take many flower heads does it.. I have a pint jar full of them at the moment..
Cheers & have a great one Sir..
The saw that our chooks love the flowers.. I tossed a few in there the other day when I mulched up the plants in the barrel so I think they will be getting more from now on... Hope the bees don't mind sharing..
Cheers :)
@@rrmcbride555 Really mate, you're that superficial. 🤔🤔🤣 Get a life.
@@rrmcbride555 You do realise that this video is over 8 years old. 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe I could have a shot at you for your poor typing skills. Absents of capitals & spaces can be quite alarming to some learned folks.
Good thing I don't give 2 tosses on how others live their life & take folks as they come. Maybe you should give that a try.
✌🖖
I usaully let the self sow in the garden and pull up unwanted plants. I ahve even had them pop up in my lawn beside some of my raised beds. I think they are one of the easiest plants to save. Thanks for sharing Rob :)
There would be a few dozen individual seeds in a flower head, each will give you another plant.. All our plants came from one.. Once you have one that flowers you will have thousands of seeds if the bush grows large enough :)
I haven't grown these in years, must remember to get some seed for next year.
I grew a border of marigolds around some tomatoes years ago for nematode protection and found the flowers are a good aphid trap crop! Picked the infested flowers off and fed them to the chooks ;-)
My neighbours now have a little hedge of them on their side of the fence John :D Goes well with their yellow current tomato that popped up from nowhere :/
The first time we Have grown the French here, tried the African before but wasn't very pleased with them..
The girls & I have been playing Johnny apple seed with them all through the front & back yard so we will have them popping up everywhere methinks..
Save seeds that is but you got that...
Nice one..
These are growing like weeds here at the moment.. Was it the French you had ??
We tried the Africans here a few times... Couldn't even get any viable seed from them..
If you were closer you could come around & grab some of these..
Great tips on how to.
Thanks!🙂
Glad it was helpful Rebecca.
Happy growing. 👍
And to think I bought a packet of seeds from a local big box store for about $0.50 that had about one flower worth of seeds.
I have a bush downstairs with a carton worth of seed on it I think mate. 😉
Cheers & happy growing.
how do you plant them..............
Don't get squirrels here sorry but have seen a few people online trap & relocate them to get them out of the garden.. Not sure how well that woks though.. The only other suggestion I have is to cage the plants or garden bed..
Sorry I'm not much help..
It reminds me of a quiver that is full of arrows.
amazing.. thank you Rob. i wish i can get that seed... :)
+islam my faith
Am glad you enjoyed the clip.
Tagetes patula seeds should be readily available in most countries.
Cheers & all the best,
Rob.
Awesome!! Thank you so much!
No problem... Hope it helps some :)
Rob..
Thankyou 👍
You’re welcome 😊
so did you spread the seeds over the ground without soil over them? What about watering? Every day? and best time to do it would be in Spring time?
This isn't a how-to grow, just how we save the seeds.
I spread it over then pat them in. You could sprinkle some soil lightly over the top if you want & keep it moist.
Nice one.. You going to say seeds ??
Cheers sir..
Thanks Rob. My plants are producing really well now, and it won't be long before they are tilled under. I'm going to save a bunch of seeds and was wondering how it's done :) Do the flowers have to be totally dry before pulling them off?
Gardeninggirl1107 I don't think they have to be total dried out Robin. I just give the seeds a bit of a tug to see if they are ready to come out as I walk by the plants now. Any that come out get sprinkled around as I walk through the patch.
Hope that helps some.
Thanks Rob, and yes it helped a lot. I have been picking off spent flowers and saving them. When they are totally dried,
I'll be harvesting the seeds. Hopefully I can then share with others like you did for me :)
Hi Rob,
Do you know what variety of french marigolds these are? They are beautiful.
I was told they were French Marigolds & that was it. No idea of the exact variety sorry. They do jive off a beautiful display though 👍
Sorry about that.
Rob
No worries at all! :-) I found a few online that look quite nice. Thanks for replying.
Don't forget snails and slugs "love" them!
+David Hastings
Hi David.
We haven't had any issues with slugs or snail until this season for some reason. Am now finding them everywhere but the damage they cause doesn't look that bad for the time being. Am yet to see any on the marigolds but haven't been looking either. Will check on them when I go down to walk the patch later today.
Cheers & have a great one,
Rob.
If you let the seeds fall off naturally couldn't they grow back next year
We do & they pop up everywhere given the chance. I also collect a lot of seeds to give away to folks at time as well ;)
nice one
Cheers Linda :)
Have a good one,
Rob.
and you
I want this seeds
I have none to offer you sorry.
The botanical name is Tagetes patula if that helps.
I want some seeds.plz...
They should be readily available on all continents (except Antarctica 😉) I think mate.
Cheers.
😍😍😘😘
can i take the seeds from the flowerheads and put them directly in earth to grow more marigolds??? or are there some special procedures like drying or somthin
Hi there...
You can just spread them like that fore sure.. We walk around the patch doing that a fair bit so we have a few popping up everywhere...
Cheers & have fun spreading the seed :-)
Rob..
Plz reply sir
I just did. 😉
Thanks for the vid. (Your eyebrows need a trim)
Yes they do but it won't be happening any time soon. They annoy my kids too much. 😉🤣
