Oh my gosh... I was among the thousands of participants for Burpee's contest back in the mid 60's! Thank you for triggering those memories! I was never successful at getting anything remotely close to being white, but it was still fun growing marigolds! All these years later, I still grow marigolds! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA -- 8/12/2020.
GREAT story! I remember being a very young child hoping for a surprise white marigold each summer, but alas, it never happened, hah. I’ve heard snippets about the contest winner but this was much more info. So fun! Of course now I ALWAYS grow a crop of white marigolds (as well as oranges and yellows). Thanks for the nostalgia and neat information. Keep being awesome! Love your seeds! 💚💚💚
Love this narrator’s voice and being given this content. The enthusiasm for growing things is contagious. I’m still excited after 11 years. Thank you for sharing this with us! ❣️
Some of my happiest memories of my childhood were when my parents took me to the Burpee seed store (we were local) and let me pick seeds and then we would go outside and pick plants. Now I’m a mommy and I get to pass down the love of gardening, growth and life. This was an amazing bit of history I didn’t know. I can’t wait to show my mother this video. Thank you so much
Who is the narrator? One of the best I've heard in a long time. 💜👌🏵 (Mr. Eliopoulos c. 6th grade. "If you wait on your question until I'm done..." -Ms. Johnson 😉😁 ) White Marigold for Stefanía's Garden in 2021!!
💚 Love the history about this flower. I had thought about adding marigolds to my garden next year. This is my sign to move forward!! Thank you for helping me make up my mind. 👍🏾 #favoritenarrator
I love this! I never heard of this story before. How awesome is that that she created the white marigold? I wish the town still had the sign up though. I was never a fan of marigolds when I was younger. Now that I'm older I have come to appreciate them and this is actually my first year growing them. They just started to bloom too. The reddish/orange/yellow mixed petals is what I like the best.
Great video, as a dutch person, I had never heard of a white marigold. We call them afrikaantjes in the Netherlands. Really will look into getting some seeds. Thank you.
@@ashleylaing6554 my mom just got the seeds from the flowers she got at northgate and threw them on top of the soil and now my whole garden is filled with them
Michelle is so familiar. From NPR? or maybe a narrator from audiobooks? It's driving me nuts cause I can't figure it out but I know her voice. Does anyone know?
Hi Frieda, I worked in public radio for many years at stations in Minnesota, North Carolina, Indiana and Wisconsin and occasionally filed stories with NPR. I love making these Seed Stories!
What an amazing bit of knowledge for us Marigold lovers❣️ I’d love to grow the white variety. God bless the Vonk ancestors for all her difficult yet loving work. Anyone know where we can purchase these seeds? {{{ HUGGZ }}} from Northeast Ohio where I’ve grown Marigolds my entire life. Tomorrow I’ll be 69 so that’s a lot of Marigold growing years!
That’s americas official flower??? Man they really dropped the ball on that one. Thousands of flowers let use the most basic one that stinks 😂 I grow them too but Americas flower come on

Kate, that’s so cool!
Cool ✌️
I would love to hear more about the medicinal values of the marigold!

I look forward to these little stories! Very interesting little tidbits.
OMG! I love this story! 🥰
Sounds like a pretty amazing woman, thank you for telling her story!
What a wonderful story. If Burpee did produce the flower, they sure were generous to still give Mrs. Vonk 10 Grand, and the accolades.
The video was terrific. I enjoyed the history and the story of Mrs Vonk.
If we don't plant anything else during the spring and summer, you will always find Marigolds in our flower pots! Love them.!
Great video! Loving these plant history lessons. Marigolds are one of my favorite flowers so it is nice to know more about them.
Beautiful you guys!!!! Awesome history of the marigold!!!👍✨
I Remember that contest. My mother planted them, but to no success. That was huge money back then. Great video.
Thank you! I just brought my first ever white marigold seeds today, and I can’t wait to plant them!
Looking out admiring my marigolds with added respect. Thank you.

White Marigold for Stefanía's Garden in 2021!!
Her name is Michelle, and she narrates most if our videos :)
These videos are so enjoyable! Thank you so much for your time and dedication. I’m a new gardener in my mid-50s and I enjoy these tremendously.
I'm growing these this year! So cool to know their story!
Marigolds rock!
So interesting more stories like this please

I loved this story. Thank you so much for sharing about Alice and the white marigold.
Another excellent video! I am ready for the nursery and store to open:)
I’m growing a “white” marigold from burpee this year! I’ll have to get the one from you for next year if it’s available!
Loved this!
wow Mary-gold, for mother Mary, how brilliant!

Planted white marigolds this year and they are gorgeous! Awesome story, thank you for sharing!
Can you tell me how you did it? I planted a tray of 50 and none of the seedlings thrived. They all shriveled up and died.
I always have started them outside! Thus year i started them on heat mat and that worked well? Maybe not warm enough?
Alice Vonk sounds like an amazing woman!

I am Steve Oswalt, Alice Vonks’s grandson. She had a very deep dutch ancestry, visited Holland many times and celebrated her Dutch roots.🙂
I bought white marigold seeds and got yellow. Will try again, I am really looking forward to this beautiful flower.
So can we buy them from rare seeds? I found them at Wal-Mart but they never produced.

I knew it sounded familiar! Good call :)
