I really enjoyed this one Steve. Both being a part of it and watching the finished product! It's a great honest break down of a very tough process, great work! (and Kudos to you for flying the "hard plane")
Lesson learned: I initially enrolled in one of those “10-day IFR” courses through a local flight school and was signed off to test. Busted that check-ride. I took a deep breath and slowed down; really started digging deeper into the material. I both read books and watched several RUclips videos like this. I realized how much more I was really missing in my understanding. One year later I tried again and passed as a much safer, confident, and proficient IFR pilot. Hindsight 20/20, I laud this gentleman for choosing to take his time.
Congratulations!! FlightChops! Update on my last post: After 29 years, (and I almost gave up a few Months ago) I finally bought my first little Cessna 150 (not long ago)...I finally got my biannual done -(Last week) , and now I'm flying again! ;D What a great felling!! Now on to getting my Instrument Rating done also!
Congratulations Chops! I’m a 53 year old guy that just earned my instrument ticket July 2019 after having my private for 7 years. Achieving your goals in aviation while living the rest of your normal day to day life is a huge achievement. Congrats!
Also, give us that hour and sixteen minute video of you talking to Denis. He's a class act with his knowledge, calmness.....................and voice obviously!
Haha - cool yes - maybe I will share the long version of the Dennis interview somewhere... we are working on an other thing, and a bunch of that footage will end up in that one
Now comes the hard part: flying actual IFR on a regular basis. Scary at first but quite necessary. One of the first practical lessons that an airline pilot learns is that you go on the gauges from takeoff to touchdown. That doesn't mean heads down, it means the gauges drive the operational decisions as opposed to seat of the pants flying.
Yet ANOTHER reson to move north to Canada. Considering al of the instructors I've flown with in the U.S. since the 1980's, Dennis Simo is a real treasure. Geez I wish I could pick up some instrument instruction with him.
Congratulations Steve! Love your videos. Please keep you Flight Chops sharp with your IFR! Seriously! I know you will. Come to KAPC Napa, CA. You know you want to come to wine country! Also, your mindset of keeping your Daughter safe is spot on. My PPL designated examiner said I would pass if she felt she could let her child fly with me. I passed!
Congratulations Steve!!! Well done!! Yeah you are deserve for this! In Wednesday, fly my first solo flight at Commercial pilot course and very happy for that!! Now start the navigations for commercial pilot course. I really happy for you and fly more! Don't stop Steve! Continue your flights and share your videos! Best regards from Rio de Janeiro!
Weather you are VFR or IFR rated, It has always been better to be on the ground wishing you were flying, than flying wishing you were on the ground. Well done Steve, going IFR on nice sunny days will help keep you proficient, and ever a good student.! Congratulations on your upgrade.! Whats next I wander, instructor's rating perhaps !
Hey congrats!!!! About a year ago I said I wasn’t going to watch anymore of your videos till you passed your IFR. I’m super excited to get back to watching your great content. Now it’s time to go back and watch all I’ve missed.
Okay I might have watched one or two since I said that. I was just trying to do my part to motivate you!!!!:) Congrats again. It’s a great rating. Had mine since March of 19’
Steve, you have every reason to be proud of your accomplishment. The only test that I know of that is harder than getting your instrument rating is the three phases of testing to become a Master Sommelier. Well done!
@Chairman of the Board Well my little Italian Grandmother "Noni" drank a glass of red wine every single day of her adult life and she lived to be 98. Everything in moderation my friend.....
Congratulations Steve, now just stay current and active. I did a similar thing on my IFR checkride. The examiner had me hold at the VOR, then do a VOR approach. When I put in the approach to the GPS, it automatically sequenced past the VOR but I still had to do a PT for altitude. The DPE was old-school and didn't know anything about the GPS and started ranting about "this infernal thing doesn't work" and I had to tell him that it was sequenced wrong but that I would fly it like a regular VOR approach without the magenta line. I flew it to minimums and went missed using the stopwatch instead of the GPS, but it was a challenge to remember to aviate, navigate, communicate. Let the tech go if necessary.
This is how inspiring YOU are. I'm 68, studying for my private written, taking lessons in a wonderful 150 with a wonderful instructor, but today I learned some dumb tax decisions I made at retirement-time will probably take away all my flight lesson money for 2020. It's a crushing setback, but being inspired, I'll do my best to keep healthy and even if I take a year off, I'll pass my written, keep simming and be back as soon as I can. Congrats to you my brother. High-five !
Amazing to hear the videos have been inspiring for you! And so sorry about your glitch with taxes and cash flow - I hope you can get back on track with your flying soon!
Congratulations Steve. I failed my first instrument check ride a year ago, and I'm still trying to work up the courage to do it again. Your perseverance is motivating.
I worked at the second largest US flight school. I saw tons of check-rides and worked with the CFIIs and knew most of the students they taught. There is little correlation between "busting a check-ride" and being a good pilot. I saw a couple of the very best students in the school fail a ride for something silly. Each task in the check-ride is pass/fail. It's not a statement about your worth as a pilot unless you bust several rides. The great thing about a re-test is you just re-do the task(s) you didn't complete to standards. It's not a full re-test in the US. So a re-test could be a demonstration of 1 item and then land. Some of the better pilots/students are super-critical. Don't go down that path. You either did the item to standards or you didn't, nothing more.
CONGRATULATIONS STEVE!!!!!! Do not be down on yourself about the timeline. There is nothing that can replace experience, and your determination is inspirational!! Way to go!!!
Congrats! I didn't want to mention it til you got your IFR ticket because who wants more on that particular pile, but now that you've got it may I recommend flying some NDB approaches in any sim that will let you. Those always seemed to push my limits more than anything else.
Good job Steve on the IFR rating! Really love your channel, such good content. I've been following you from France and now from California! Love flying, love your videos! 👍 Nico
I’m in the same boat. Five years and doing my instrument rating check ride in a few weeks. Got my ppl in 2015 and been watching you since your early days.
Congrats Steve! Always remember that you earned this! Any idea what's next? Float rating? Multi-engine? Commercial? Whatever it may be, thanks for taking us along on the ride!
You inspired me a few years ago to get my night, then IFR, then commercial and now change careers to be a CFI (I’ve had my PPL for 20 years). I’ve taken a break recently but once again you inspired me and I’m logging off to get back to the books and finish my online ground school and take out the plane this weekend... CONGRATS Steve and thank you for all you’ve done to the aviation community!
Congratulations Steve, its wonderful to see you overcome these challenges and inspire us all. I'm very thankful for all the content you put out. CHEERS!!
Steve. I wanted to thank you. Watching your videos, and more specifically this video, has inspired me. This morning I started an application for FAFSA to attend Lake Superior College this coming fall in their Professional Pilot, A.A.S. program. In a couple years I will be qualified to fly multiengine commercial fixed-wing aircraft. Congratulations on getting your Instrument rating and best of luck flying in 2020.
You completely earned my respect when you admitted you had a hard time passing the written. I’m the same when it come to test taking. Cheers man and congrats!
written's are hard but can you imagine doing the flight-test with that instructor? he IS the real deal. brutally tough, as they should be.... love watching him instruct. he defines what CFI's should be like. however, can you imagine what HIS training and instructor was like?
Congrats on passing both your written test and the instrument rating check ride. Just like you, I have been through some struggles and situations that has delayed me from my PPL check ride, but that will be accomplished this year. Keep up the great work with the video contents and being an inspiration for those of us who are still working to achieving our goals. Congrats again sir.
Congratulations. You nailed it! As a flight instructor I keep on telling my students that we pilot are not judged on mistakes but on how we react and how we stay focus on fixing issues: when things go wrong just fly the plane. I fly with both european and american endorsements and getting the FAA and the EASA IR rating was one of the best moment in my 19 years of flying. 🍾🛩👏
Hi Steve! We met at OSH19 last year! Admittedly, I was one of the people who twisted the dagger a little more by asking how the instrument rating going. I wanted to reach out and commend you for finishing up. It doesn't matter how long it took, only that you passed. I remember my instrument training and the check ride to this day. It was one of my favorite ratings and ride to take. Congratulations Steve! Keep it up!!!
*This* is the kind of lesson that makes FlightChops awesome. The rabbit hole has really screwed me a few times, and it's a really good thing to specifically call attention to. I'm going to mention this to my CFI friends, they might be interested in bringing it into their lessons.
Congratulations Steve. I loved the introspection and lack of enthusiasm because it shows the right mindset for a pilot. No ego but rather, how could I’ve done better. Your longtime viewers know this about you but there will be some who come across this as their first video from you. You succeeded and stayed modest. Important lesson right there. Again congratulations, love your channel.
Congrats and great job Steve! Definitely keep proficient on that IFR. There is a big difference between currency & proficiency. I had to turn down a clearance to shoot an ILS into BFL the other night after a long two days of bringing a 182 back from COS because I’m not current and definitely not proficient. Be willing to make a tough decisions (like another unscheduled night away from home and family) when you know an action will exceed your proficiency and/or currency. I know a lot of guys that would have just shot the approach, but I like the idea of making it home alive to kiss my wife and hug my boys. I encourage you to factor your family into your IFR decision making that way. Again, great job brother! We’re all proud of you!
Congrats. Really enjoyed your channel and inspiration. Working on my test prep for IFR in February with a goal of a check ride by late summer. I will definitely rewatch this when I want to pull my hair out. Your character and work ethic will be the shot I’ll need to keep moving on.
I've already commented on other social media and my congrats are as heartfelt here as they were on those other platforms. Dennis pretty well hit it at the 1:30 mark when he said you worked your ass off. You did. You worked hard for this rating, and you did everything you needed to do. I said 'I knew you would', and I did. But, I agree with Jason, when you figured out the GPS and decided that it wasn't going to be the primary instrument, that you forced yourself to unlock your brain from that one device and move back to a full scan, you did what was necessary for an Instrument Rated pilot to do his or her job. You can't overlook that, and I think the Examiner most likely didn't. You did good! Now, as you know, I've said it multiple times, I'm not longer current, I've never had anything above my PPL, but I can recognize a good pilot when I see one, and you are a good pilot. Again, congrats on the Instrument Rating, and that bottle that was on your desk, after touchdown and engine shutdown. :D :p
@@FlightChops Steve, you've given so much to all of us who are ground bound, just starting to stretch wings, or grizzled old bird with more hours than they'd care to admit. People appreciate you, and you always come across meek and willing to learn. A sign of a truly intelligent individual. Keep going, soon enough you'll have your Multi Instrument, and then you get to start work on your CFI, CFII, CFIM, CFIIM, etc. LOL
Man congratulations on getting your instrument rating. As someone currently working on mine I understand how challenging it is. Seeing you get yours has given me a massive motivation boost :)
Huge congratulations all the way from the Netherlands! Very excited to see where, when and how you'll take us on flights that weren't possible before you got IFR certified.
Congrats man. Great accomplishment. Getting side projects done is hard and you did not let go on the IFR rating even after several years. You are an inspiration. Keep it up.
Congrats Steve on finally obtaining your IFR ticket, and a great debrief on your awesome PDM skills. I start my MIFR rating in a couple months and your journey has been an inspiration.
Surely you need a video with a high five from Osama! Congratulations man! I look up to instrument rated pilots like I used to look at private pilots before I solo'd - Hope I can join the league someday
@@FlightChops thanks man. I signed up for your mailing list. I don't know if you have done the giveaway of the sim yet. I'd like to be considered. I'm a Pastor with 4 kids so I could use it if it could save me some money on my training.
@@mattbasford6299 Awesome thanks! We haven't sorted out how we're going to do that give away yet - will work on that next week and make some noise about it. Keep an eye on the socials and the mailing list - have a good week! Steve
@@FlightChops thanks buddy. I have about 450 hours and have flown VFR all over the US. I've been in some pretty tight spots and now it's time to get safer. Our flying club has a 172 and 182 that's about to get a avionics update with a G5 and Garmin 530.
Congrats Chops! As a old examiner who no longer flys, I have enjoyed seeing you on your IFR journey. You worked hard and should be very proud of your learning moment. Most students look at a 2 as being a bad mark, but that was the moment you passed your ride! Now get out there and use your rating.
Congratulations! I started my instrument training in 2015. I got deployed overseas in 2016 and my wife had our daughter in 2016 while I was gone. I finally got back into training in 2019 and I have my written test scheduled for the end of Jan 2020. Hopefully I can wrap up the check ride in February. Wanted to say thanks for putting your IFR journey out here. It has helped me stay motivated and encouraged to continue on my track to becoming an IFR pilot.
Hi There Steve! Great video man and many thanks for sharing the hard work. No doubt getting your IFR rating is a great achievement, that makes you a more complete aviator whatsoever. Cheers mate!
Awesome Steve! Congrats!!! Did my instrument like 18 years ago in a 1969 Arrow with a little Apollo GPS. Was a 2" screen and I really thought it was a great tool almost like cheating. And it was a great tool back then! Had no Foreflight or Wing X , all paper charts and plates to fumble through. With you on the written. I remember taking it and thinking dont care how many I miss long as I pass! As you mentioned the newer technology will make it a lot nicer so you have a lot to look forward to! Thanks for sharing. Again, big congrats!!!
Awesome job... I'm working on my instrument Rating and it's kicking my butt... I've thought about giving up several times along this journey, seeing how you pushed on and your honesty about the whole process made me realize that its so worth it to keep at it. Thank you for all the content that you've giving us all, You are definitely an inspiration. Congratulations.
It is so awesome to hear this Anthony! Sharing the struggle has been hard, but feedback like this makes it worth it, and I appreciate you letting me know.
Sweet, man. Huge congrats on an enormous accomplishment. Love your humility and honesty about the long slog of this journey, but you earned it 1000 percent.
Congratulations Steve! I really love your videos and they inspire me to share mistakes I make during my flying lessons to learn from them. From the moment I saw your first video and how openly you shared your experiences I was inspired to do the same. The best learning experiences I have nowadays are when I share my own experiences at flight school. This debrief shows exactly what contribution your community has in the aviation industry.
Congratulations Steve, Another opportunity to fly as a safe pilot. I never got that far, but just enjoyed my flying time!( mostly in my Stearman)! I still remember the good times and wish I wasn't too old as I am. Good luck. Bob
Congratulations! I've been following you on Instagram and got so happy seeing you passed. We've been rooting for you and knew you'd do well. You are your own worst critic.
Congratulations I will enjoy watching this! Hello from a fellow pilot from the UK. Currently training for my PPL and also filming my flying. You're a big inspiration to me!
Congratulations FlightChops! It's been incredible watching your journey on RUclips, thanks for sharing and contributing so much to GA. Think I speak for a lot of people, but we've loved coming along for the ride with you
I am really enjoying watching this. The way you handled the GPS issue was perfect, and there will be issues like that on every flight. It gets even more interesting when you work as a crew member. Well done!
I really enjoyed this one Steve. Both being a part of it and watching the finished product! It's a great honest break down of a very tough process, great work! (and Kudos to you for flying the "hard plane")

Just passed my Commercial checkride with the help of Finer Points description of some of the maneuvers. Thx Jason and Congrats Steve.
Hi Jason, Agreed, he showed grit and determination to do something like that.
"I didn't fail". The inimitable FlightChops and his modesty. Congratulations mate. Hard work and a well deserved success. Happy flying!

Thanks Gary! I’ve always appreciated your encouragement
LOL
Congratulations! You’re keeping me going brother.
Well done! I'm very happy that you passed and I'm looking forward watching your future flights!!
Thanks Michael!
Congratulations, I think that rating is one of the most rewarding to obtain.
Agreed :)
Congratulations with you instrument. Its not the time but the confidence you feel. Now the real IFR flying starts. Good luck
Well done, Steve. Congratulations and welcome to the club!
This is huge! This is a perfect example of perseverance, drive, and dealing with life. Great close to a great chapter of this story.
Man congratulations on getting your instrument rating. As someone currently working on mine I understand how challenging it is. Seeing you get yours has given me a massive motivation boost :)
You can do it!
@@FlightChops Thanks I appreciate it :)
Congratulations! That's definitely the most difficult checkride. Excited to see you in the multi again.
My instrument check ride is Monday. Studied with you along the way. Nice job, Steve.
Congratulations Steve! What a great achievement! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Well deserved Steve, keep them Flight Chops Sharp! Cheers.
Congrats Steve! You've got so much going on, don't get overwhelmed!
Congrats, you really earned it - and thanks so much for taking us along the way - gives us an idea what you get into if you decide to go that route.
Surely you need a video with a high five from Osama! Congratulations man! I look up to instrument rated pilots like I used to look at private pilots before I solo'd - Hope I can join the league someday
Thanks! And Yes - I’ll be flying some pretty awesome missions with Osama soon!
Massive congrats Steve. Truly inspirational. Proud of you mate!
Congratulations Steve! You deserve this rating and I thank you for being an important ambassador in the aviation community!
Accomplishment of the decade! Big congrats and hope to see you at OSH again this year
Just made an appointment with a CFII to start my instrument training next week. Wish me luck. Congratulations man!
Awesome! Try to remember to enjoy the training, despite how hard it is :)
You did it! Congratulations!!!
Well done Steve. Great to see you finally get your IR.
Congrats Chops! As a old examiner who no longer flys, I have enjoyed seeing you on your IFR journey. You worked hard and should be very proud of your learning moment. Most students look at a 2 as being a bad mark, but that was the moment you passed your ride! Now get out there and use your rating.
Congratulations Steve! Well done, and well deserved.
Congrats! That’s a huge accomplishment! Thanks also for the humility and honesty you bring to this channel. Clear skies and following winds my friend!
Thanks Michael - it’s been very rewarding to share the vulnerability of the learning moments with this community
I plan to wrap up my instrument rating in the next month. Congratulations to you, your a real pilot now
:)
Congratulations Steve!!! Way to hang strong and stay committed!!
FINALLY. Awesome job and we are all proud of you
Awesome dude! Hard work, and dedication never fail.
CONGRATS, Steve! Love FlightChops. Keep gaining altitude!
Best of luck and thanks for your service Dan!
Well done Steve, all the hard work and perseverance has paid off and thanks for sharing all you do. Cheers, Mike , Johannesburg
Congratulations on getting your instrument rating Steve! I love your channel...
You worked your arse off and certainly deserve to get it -- all the time helping others to understand the process through your videos. Great Job!!
You clearly haven't seen my worst critics :P But thanks! :)
Think I speak for a lot of people, but we've loved coming along for the ride with you
CONGRATS! Hard work an perseverance wins yet again!
I am really enjoying watching this. The way you handled the GPS issue was perfect, and there will be issues like that on every flight. It gets even more interesting when you work as a crew member. Well done!
Thanks!
