Organiser Ty MacDowell, 20, said the protest in Portland, Maine, was aimed at showing the double standards in the state of Maine.
Men are allowed to walk down the street shirtless but, although not illegal, women are too afraid to go topless.

Perhaps they (well, I'm an American too) feel that they'd lose something. A friend of mine once said he'd be afraid for nudity to lose that "special" quality to it. But in reality it doesn't work like that. It's just that the "HOLY CRAP, NUDITY!" factor goes away, and we get to just be ... natural. We make so many problems for ourselves just because we're afraid. In countries where topfreedom is law, creepiness goes way down, sex crimes go way down, and people do not all turn gay, LOL.

In a way, I can agree with this. I still think there's a double standard *in the law*, but I don't think looking at a person of the opposite sex topless is such a horrible thing. Being rude about staring, etcetera, is a problem, whether a woman is wearing a shirt or not. Keto made a good point that *if we were used to it*, it wouldn't be such a spectacle anymore. However, we would still be attracted to some things more than others.
I already addressed those points with my other posts. I'm sorry you forgot about that. ;)
I believe that choosing to keep women as sexual objects, and men as mindless idiots, is disrespectful. However, if you choose to remain in your mindset, then go for it, it's your right and that's okay. I have found out that it doesn't *HAVE* to be that way, depending on the culture and mindset of other individuals, and so when I get the chance I choose to live in a different way. And that's okay too. :)

There is one more thing I could mention. I could mention a tribe of people, even in the "backwards" Amazon, rainforests of Brazil, where beliefs of eclipse spirits and superstitions of sorcery and painful rituals persist to this day. However, what I think is noteworthy is that these people are basically naked, all together, and the women have the same level of respect as men, have positions of leadership, and can divorce. This is hardly the sexism you present in the face of simple nudity.
I also need to address the pedophile and pervert thing. If you understood the mechanisms by which people get that f*cked in the first place, you'd know that there are actually far less of those kinds of things in areas where nudity itself isn't seen as a big deal. These things are fueled by repression, not simply having one's "shlong" out, and seriously, man, pedophiles are going to be sick no matter what.

Well, she doesn't seem to understand that things are going to draw attention until they change for the better. It would be nice to be in a society where men didn't feel the need to gawk, but the natural female form is not publicly acceptable, and these men aren't going to miss the rare sight. I imagine a group of Saudi women wearing American clothing might draw a crowd there. It doesn't here because we're used to being able to see faces and legs.

A :because it's against human nature not to, and it is against human nature to be naked, remember what Adam and Eve did when they became aware of their nakedness ?
@dab0331 "These people" are not always arguing that humans are just animals. That assumption is baseless. Personally, I believe that humans are *scientifically* animals by design, but that there are also huge differences. Naturist Christians do exist.
Yes, if a woman walks topless, she has to deal with certain consequences. The point is that those consequences are unfortunate, and only present because we're so unused to seeing breasts in a normal setting.

Reply 2: If you've ever been in a naturist environment (I had to do so myself to believe it), you'll notice that bodies come in all shapes, some sexually attractive, some not. That doesn't go away; it's not like you don't think a hot girl is hot anymore. But a lot does change. There's no dwelling on "I wonder what's under there", no feeling like something is hidden. The unhealthy extra part of the allure, which is created by our repression, is what goes away.

There are certain cultures where they do this without a problem. A penis isn't dangerous, an individual is.
For those who said it's ok about this I ask them to let their mothers, sisters and/or daughters to walk naked every day at home, streets, schools, restaurants and every places where a lot of men available. Can you do this?

What you seem to fail to realize that If people have that kind of problem, than it is first and foremost, THEIR problem. There is nothing sillier to demand other people to follow one's own religious standards.
You can't expect men not to be turned on by something that has become a sexual thing. That doesn't mean this is not a noble cause, because it is. Women should have the same rights that men do, but its going to take some time to reverse social conditioning. Also, its a paradox to say "we want to draw attention" and then get upset when they get that attention. No press is bad press on an issue like this.

The thing is, you and I have very different views on things. When my girl and I are in a clothing-optional environment, we DO NOT feel like Adam and Eve. That's what is hard to get until you try it. Sure, we could make ourselves feel that way if we took it as a way to get all sexual, but naturally we just relax! And ya know what? Some other guy is going to see my girl, and some thought might enter his head ... and so what? Is it dangerous to simply have a stray thought? It's about respect, man.
