The Māori language lends so well to this type of metal music. And AW do it so well. The sounds of the language has the power to blend naturally to metal, the screams, the growls, it just fits.

They are half Māori by the way, and the band name came from the movie District 9. They were 8 and 10 when they got started, the singer and drummer are brothers (their Māori dad is their sound guy).
The song name is pronounced 'kai tongue-ata'. It basically means 'eat people', as that is what they did to their enemies to dishonour them, ancestors of the band fought in the battle they were depicting here, and they had family members acting in the video - FYI that woman was completely Māorii :D
They also sing songs in English. The brothers actually learnt Māori first though.

Hey Dude! Great reaction. Just a couple of quick corrections if you're interested. In the maori language the vowel sounds are always the same - in fact they are identical to Japanese. "A" is always "uh", "e" is always "eh", "i" is always "ee", "o" is as in "hot", "u" is as in "hoot". The word "Maori" is not pronounced "may-ory" but "muh oh ree" with the first two syllables combined like the communist party chaiman "mao". The Maori language has been in a renaissance at least since the 1970s, and I think these guys are beneficiaries of that rather than pioneers. I remember learning some basic Maori as a little kid at school in the '80 's and I think aspects of Maori culture have been more widely embraced since then. Part of the reason for that is that the Maori have always been awesome. Descendants of the intercontinental voyagers nicknamed "Vikings of the Sunrise", the only people with a stone age tech base to battle the British Empire and consistently win tactical victories - while outnumbered 10-1. In WWII they formed part of 2nd NZ Division - the unit that saw the most combat of ANY division and were called out by General Rommel as the best troops in the world. Like all English speaking countries, racism exists in New Zealand, but less so than in other countries. European colonisation was carried out with Maori consent via the Treaty Of Waitangi and in spite of conflicts and misunderstandings it is still the founding law of NZ.

Your point about Alien Weaponry and its meaning is valid, buuuut in this case it is literal aliens from space. The members of the band were only kids (12-14 years old) when they started, and they were huge fans of the movie District 9. So Alien Weaponry is a reference to the cool alien shit from the movie.

Even though I don't understand the lyrics or the Maori language, judging from this video, there are many maori tribes living in New Zealand and fighting over each others for territory. The ones that have had contact with the westerners were able to adopt the musket, and the musket became the weapon of choice for conquering other tribes.

Another band that incorporates native elements in their music is "The HU".
They're Mongolian, sing in their native language, including throat singing and use traditional instruments.
I've seen them recommended in the comments of some of your other videos.
A good song to start on would be "Yuve yuve yu" or "Wolf totem".
Those 2 are the songs that got me started on the band.
Both of these songs have official english subtitles (via youtube), should you want to understand the lyrics.
Their music is more rock than it is metal, but they played on Graspop Metal Meeting and are said to play on Wacken (once events are allowed again).

      @@OldSkuleNerd Talk about coincidence :p
I've found that all of this more ethnic/folk metal really is a slippery slope.
That is how I ended up listening to Heilung.
They have also been suggested in some comments.
Their music is anything but metal though, not even rock.
I you were to check out Heilung, I would suggest (or not) reading up on their band first.
That way you might be more prepared for what to expect.
They seem to be one of those bands people either like a lot, or not at all.

Might not know how to speak Maori but man is it a powerful song. Also side note: I did ask him what Kai Tangata meant, answer I got was it's along the lines of 'The greater above' (Someone factcheck me).

The name of the band in fact really originated from scifi movie. Brothers Henry and Lewis de Jong has seen the movie District 9 when they was 8 (younger brother) and 10 (the older). As for the actors of the video afaik they were all Maori people. That women na have non-Maori ancestor or maybe not, cause many Maori today are really pale.

I gotta have a long argument of the "learn the culture" comment....
Honestly, I agree with the message. Learn about the culture. Which means, if you're moving from Texas to central Pennsylvania, learn the culture, history, and the accent. If they speak the same language. It's a really big sign of respect for the locals.
In the same conversation, we need to learn the Native American history, culture, and language. Learn how the languages are different, and the differences between accents of Native American tribesmen & tribeswomen. Like the accents, & languages between Iroquois & Sioux language, for example. In this case, the cultures are different.
Homaging a native culture is not racist if you have true passion towards wanting to pay homage towards a tribe.
Say in sports, the Washington Redskins, if they truly do respect(ed) native American cultures. The model for that was of the Blackfoot tribe, so was the artist, and even the approval of the logo. That said, why didn't they change the name to "Washington Blackfeet" if the Blackfoot tribe heavily influenced the 1971 rebrand of the Washington NFL logo?

It sounds like Chewie was congratulating you on getting the thing about their name. Colonialism and injustices against the indigenous peoples of New Zealand are a common theme in their music. They weren't even all adults when this was filmed but had already been making metal half their lives and played in some of the most prestigious European metal festivals.
One note, (though the guns used aren't actually muskets) the reload time of muskets was such that in close combat they were used as melee weapons, either as clubs or with bayonets.

Have been waiting for you to do this for a long time. I did recommend them to you ages ago and you finally got here. Thanks. Great reaction. As far as I've been able to ascertain if you have Maori ancestry through intermarriage regardless of how long ago, you are accepted in the tribe. Hence even though the band members don't have Maori appearance they are Maori. Stay safe🤘✌

Alien weaponry's album has English tracks too. They aren't as good as the ones in the native language imo. They don't seem as heavy. I saw them live. One of those tatted up tribal guys got in the pit and started doing those war stances like in the video. It was funny everyone stayed the fuck away from him.

Well... Another name for the "list". CHTHONIC from Taiwan. They're more of a "blackened symphonic folk oriental death metal" or something like that lol But they are a good band. Not for everyone but I like them :) CHTHONIC - TAKAO - Official Video may be a good first listening of them.

Hey you mentioned the red hair of the Maori woman in Kai tangata, it's actually a fact that the red hair is in the population and dates back thousands of years believed in the culture and handed down that it came from the gods... Egyptian kings and queens had red hair the supposed giants or Nephilim had red hair, it is not from mixing with European cultures ...crazy fact there's a documentary out there saying they have DNA sampled the red haired tribes and it is a pure line of red hair

I was thinking you would enjoy this. I liked your commentary about cultures. Most culture has value, like anything else develop the good and improve the bad. We as a people need to always do better, and be better. Always seek to improve. We will never be perfect, but we can always be better.

There are a bunch of other NZ bands I can recommend, like Devilskin, Blindspott/Blacklistt, Shihad, The D4, The Datsuns. Supergroove get an honorable mention, though they are a funk rock band.

    1. Maori is pronounced with a rolled 'r' sound and the whole word sounds similar to "mouldy" as in mouldy cheese, just put an 'r' where the 'd' is.
    2. Tonga is pronounced 'Tong -A', there is no harsh 'g' sound, the same goes for other Polynesian Countries, the 'g' is kind of silent. (The word 'tong' doesn't have a harsh 'g' either.)
    3. Kai Tangata is pronounced Kai -(you got that right) & Tangata -(Tongue-a-ta.)
Good on you for trying out music from other countries especially one as diverse as New Zealand. Our Maori Language almost did die-out completely but in the past 25 years so much has been done to re-ignite the language & Kiwi's are more proud to be able to speak it, Maori is an officially recognised language of New Zealand. The young show more interest as each generation comes along, they want to find out their roots just as much as any other culture. Back when my mother was young the Maori language was banned from being spoken, people were punished if they spoke it, you could loose your job or get sent home from school for it. Unfortunately it was the only language my mother spoke along with her 11 siblings & her Mother & Father. It was unfair racist discrimination.
I went to school in the 1980's & the Maori language was only just getting reintroduced back into our schools, the language is still frowned upon by some european kiwi's though, not everyone's a team player I spose.
TY for your reaction dude. Thanks from NZ!

I get where you where going with the name of this band, but no ... Alien Weaponry is a reference to the movie District9. The brothers who started this band at the ages of 10 and 8, are maybe 16 and 18 at the time this was filmed. I personally think that Ru Ana Te Whenua is the better song, but I would probably loose that battle to the RUclips crowd. These guys are one of those bands that you think is not going to sound as good live ... but it's actually better.
Kaitangata means "man eater" or "cannibal"
Here are the lyrics for you, and I'll add a couple of things, simply having the english translation isn't enough to understand because there are cultural and mythology references:
He taua, He taua! - (A war party, a war party!)
Waewae tapu takahi te ara taua - (Footsteps pound the sacred warpath)
Ka hopungia e maha nga upoko - (Many heads are sought)
Ka hopungia e maha taurekareka - (Many slaves are sought)
E mahi nga mahi a Tūmatauenga - (This is the work of Tūmatauenga)
    - Tumatauenga is a War god, Tu the angry face, also the name of the album
    Anei rā - (Behold)

Te uhi o Mataora - (The chisel of Mataora)
    - This is a reference to tatooing, or being tatooed. In the mythology Mataora is attributed with the knowledge of tattooing.
Pai tuarā - (The strong back)
Te kokongapere - (The base of the spine)
Nga rape - (The buttock spirals)
    Te kitemaimairu - (The thigh)
Tatua taua - (The war belt)
Nga tā moko puhoro - (The tattooed bodies of warriors)
Anei nga tohu a Tūmatauenga - (These are the omens of war)
He pakanga nunui mo te whakautu - (A mighty battle to avenge us)
Tae mai nga tūpuna mo te whakaāwhina - (Our ancestors gather to assist us)
Kia mau nga Tohunga mo te whakakarakia - (Our priests prepare the incantations)
E mahi nga mahi a Tūmatauenga - (This is the work of Tūmatauenga)
    Anei rā - (Behold)
Te uhi o Mataora - (The chisel of Mataora)
Pai tuarā - (The strong back)
Te kokongapere - (The base of the spine)
Nga rape - (The buttock spirals)
    Te kitemaimairu - (The thigh)
Tatua taua - (The war belt)
Nga tā moko puhoro - (The tattooed bodies of warriors)
Anei nga tohu a Tūmatauenga - (These are the omens of war)
    A Tūmatauenga x4 - (Of Tūmatauenga)
Mahi nga mahi a Tūmatauenga x4 - (This is the work of Tūmatauenga)
Whakatangi o nga pū, whakapatu nga taiaha - (The cry of guns, the blows of the taiaha)
Tiaha are the wooden staves used.
Te kikokiko rekareka ō aku hoariri - (The sweet flesh of our enemies)
    - Here is where the cannibalism comes in
Nga umu whakakīa tātau kōpū ki te utu - (The ovens fill our bellies with revenge)
E mahi nga mahi a Tūmatauenga - (This is the work of Tūmatauenga)
    Anei rā - (Behold)
Te uhi o Mataora - (The chisel of Mataora)
Pai tuarā - (The strong back)
Te kokongapere - (The base of the spine)
Nga rape - (The buttock spirals)
    Te kitemaimairu - (The thigh)
Tatua taua - (The war belt)
Nga tā moko puhoro - (The tattooed bodies of warriors)
Anei nga tohu a Tūmatauenga - (These are the omens of war)

I saw something from an anthropologist once. He said that in the future Human descendants will look a lot like the Maori do now, if we manage to get over the racist crap, that is. I'd be fine with that. Hell, they could be blue like in Indian legend, as long as humanity continues.

Not saying, you should forgett youre roots and traditions.
